The only thing I think of when I see the results is that people really preferred the melodramatic option. Seriously, who cares if Ash never becomes a Pokemon Master? It is not the end of the world if they just keep the show they way it is. If it bothers people that much, then they're just getting way too focus on a show aimed at children.
Fandom is a funny thing. I remember the fandoms of TMNT, Ghostbusters and Transformers, and how they get worked up on new TV shows and movies. Normally, we should be able to get over the new shows if it's not appealing to many... but then again, childhood memories tend to color our perspectives. And it's understandable.
That's why I like the new movie premise. It's appealing to a different sect of fans instead of fitting the fans of the original and fans of the new into one movie that might as well appeal to no one. How could new things emerge out of Pokémon if still cling on to past? If continuity isn't to be respected or referenced, then making brand new continuities will be the best course of action. A brand new Ash perhaps?
You know, I would like it if the only characters that remain the same are the Team Rocket trio. As in, no matter what new continuity they make for each new series, Team Rocket are the same eternal characters and observers from the original show, remembering everything since then. How or why is unknown. Maybe they are dimensional stumblers? It has it's appeal, like Bulk and Skull appearing in the first four (or five) series of Power Rangers despite everyone else leaving the show.
