So, you want to be part of the Bulbagarden staff?

In the past, there's been an unofficial policy that if you ask to be staff, you're probably not staff material. Having said that, we are always on the lookout for new staff, and there's a feeling that we may have been missing out on some potentially good staff simply because we were discouraging applications.

So... for once, we're going to lay things out for you. We're going to be conducting a staff recruitment drive over the next 2 weeks, and this post will tell you everything you need to know for that recruitment drive. Everything you see here though will continue to be relevant for quite a long time to come as well.

Firstly, before anything else, you need to decide what section of the site you want to be involved in. There's not a lot of knowledge of this outside of the staff, but Bulbagarden operates in a very decentralized manner. Each section and its staff recruitment policies are for all intents and purposes independent. Many of those who have a high rank in respect to one section may have a much lower rank in respect to things in another section (and yes, that means that someone's "boss" in one section could very well be that person's "subordinate" in another). Once you're working in one section of the site, it's easier to start working in another, but the vast majority of staff have duties that are specific to one section.

The sections we have are:

In practice, several of those are interlinked, and not every section is necessarily on the same level as another. Gallery, Oekaki & Art Department are all run by the same person, but the responsibilities of staff in each of those fields differs. Both the RPG Projects and Library & Content sections are subordinate to both BMGf and Bulbapedia,

The heads of each section are as follows:
BMGf - evkl
Bulbapedia - TTEchidna
Bulbanews - RexRacer
Archives - Maverick Nate
Gallery/Oekaki/Art Department - Kasumi
Chat - Misty & Satoshi-kun
Bulbagarden Roleplay District - AiedailEclipsed
Library & Content - ???

The section for Library & Content is due to be launched later this year, however we will be conducting hiring for this section during this period, with staff hired for Library & Contest being seconded to either BMGf or Bulbapedia as appropriate until this section is launched.

The methods of applying for each section of the site can vary dramatically, so if you're looking to make applications to multiple sections, you'll need to make separate applications for each.

BMGf : evkl
Staff for BMGf begin as Provisional Moderators, and can be promoted to Moderators based on their performance once on staff. To be considered for the position, you should be a member in good standing, with no current serious infractions. Your prior infraction record will be evaluated in context. Having been temporarily banned in the past will not necessarily prevent you from being considered. You should also be generally knowledgeable about the forum/topic you are looking to mod.

BMGf does not accept staff applications except during staff recruitment drives. Outside of recruiting drives, new staff will be hired on an invitation basis only. In all cases, but particularly with out-of-recruitment-drive hires, members who have contributed in some way to Bulbagarden (such as members who have joined and been active in our development group) will be considered over applicants who have not.

Interested applicants should forward Archaic and evkl a PM with a statement of interest about a paragraph in length (4-7 sentences), outlining why you want to work on BMGf, along with a list of the forum(s) that you'd be most interested in moderating. Applications to mod forums under the "Bulbagarden Projects" category heading will not be accepted by those not already on staff. If you're intending to apply to certain specialised areas, you may also need to forward your application to another member of staff. The special cases where this is necessary are as follows:
  • Applicants for mod roles relating for the Pokémon Anime forum should also forward their application to Dogasu.
  • Applicants for mod roles relating to creative content including fanfiction or fanart should also forward their application to Kasumi.
  • Applicants for mod roles relating to the Bulbagarden Roleplay District have additional requirements and responsibilities. Please scroll down to the RPG Projects section for further details.
  • Applicants for mod roles relating to the Real World and Soap Box forums should also forward their application to Evil Figment.

Bulbapedia : TTEchidna
Bulbapedia is accepting staff at a new Junior Administrator rank. Users at this rank have the ability to quickly 'rollback' vandal edits, edit protected pages, and see deleted pages. It can be considered a gateway to full administratorship.

Applicants must have a minimum of 500 mainspace contributions, as well as approximately 200 non-welcome talk- and usertalkspace edits. In addition to a continual high edit quality, applicants must have contributed to the overarching Bulbapedia community through leadership and development. They need good understanding of Bulbapedia style and policy, and must have been a member for the past six months with a reasonable level of activity. It is expected that Junior Administrators will be active in cleanup and expansion of Bulbapedia, as well as helping out other users.

Interested applicants should forward Archaic and TTEchidna a PM with a statement of interest about a paragraph in length (4-7 sentences), outlining why you want to work on Bulbapedia, including examples of your editing and community work.

Bulbanews : RexRacer
Bulbanews accepts staff applications all year round, regardless of if we are currently conducting a recruitment drive or not.

Bulbanews hires four distinct types of staff, though hires directly to the last of these are exceptionally uncommon, and would only happen with an area of news that we are significantly deficient in currently.

Staff Writer
Writers are the rank and file of Bulbanews staff. It is their job to follow the latest developments in their own area of the Pokémon fandom (Anime, Games, TCG, etc), and write these up as news articles for Bulbanews. Ideally to be considered for the position, you should have already submitted at least one story to Bulbanews as a regular user, that was accepted and published, however applicants who have not yet had submitted articles published may be considered on a case by case basis, depending on previous experience reporting news for other groups.

Interested applicants should PM Archaic and RexRacer a statement of interest about 2-3 paragraphs in length (4-7 sentences each), outlining why you want to work on Bulbanews, together with links to any articles you have already written for Bulbanews. If you have not submitted an article on Bulbanews, you should also include a statement about why you would make a good member of staff, and how you could contribute to Bulbanews.

Columnist
The job of Columnists is to write up a feature editorial on topics surrounding a central theme at regular intervals. Columnists, particularly those with longer intervals between columns, will also be expected to assist the writers with the updating of news in their field of interest. While the topic of your column is largely your own decision, topic themes for columns are subject to the approval of the Bulbanews Board of Editors. Two examples of columns that we are currently looking for include regular updates and analysis of the video game and TCG metagame, however you should not feel restricted to these kinds of columns. Examples of columns already being planned for publication include Pokémon name analysis, a review of the physics behind Pokémon moves, and a column on the quirks of our fellows in the Japanese Pokémon fandom. Ideally to be considered for the position, you would already be an established knowledgeable user in your area. It would be an asset if you have already made a number of posts to online forums or blogs relating to the topic.

Interested applicants should PM Archaic and RexRacer a statement of interest about 2-3 paragraphs in length (4-7 sentences each), outlining why you want to work on Bulbanews, together with an example of the kind of column you'd like to write.

Webcomic Artist (Syndicated/Staff)
Webcomic artists on Bulbanews come in two flavours. Syndicated artists, who already have an established webcomic that they'd like to see displayed on Bulbanews with a link back to their existing website; and Staff artists, who create exclusive webcomic for Bulbanews. While the plot and theme of your webcomic is largely your own decision, its continuing publication on Bulbanews will be subject to oversight from the Bulbanews Board of Editors. The artistic merit of the comic will be considered in judging the application, and the Board of Editors would prefer in most cases that an attempt at art is made (even if it's just stick figures), rather than you simply making a sprite comic.

Interested applicants should PM Archaic, RexRacer and Kasumi a short single paragraph statement of interest (4-7 sentences), outlining why your comic would be a good fit for Bulbanews, and your update timeframe.
  • If you have an existing webcomic that you'd like to see syndicated, or an existing webcomic that you'd like to move to Bulbanews from its current location, please include a link to your comic's current website. You may also wish to include links to specific strips that you think best show your work.
  • If you intend to be a staff artist, please also include a summary of your planned plot/theme, along with 3 example strips.

Section Editor
Section Editors are senior staff on Bulbanews, responsible for managing Bulbanews writers and editors in their section. While it is possible to be hired directly to this position, we would expect the majority of people to work themselves up from one of the other positions. As such, people will not be hired for this position unless they either can demonstrate significant prior experience in reporting Pokémon news for Bulbanews and other websites, if they can demonstrate prior experience in the news media, or if they already hold a position in another part of Bulbagarden.

Serious applicants may PM Archaic and RexRacer to arrange a formal interview.

Archives : Maverick Nate
The Archives is looking for people to step into administrative positions. Administrators on the Archives are tasked with establishing procedures and categorizing images, among other tasks. Candidates must have excellent organizational skills and experience with MediaWiki software. They must also be able to work both cooperatively and independently to achieve tasks as set by the Editor-in-Chief of the Archives.

Interested applicants should forward Archaic and Maverick Nate a PM with a statement of interest about a paragraph in length (4-7 sentences), outlining why you want to work on the Archives, including examples of your editing work on Bulbapedia, Bulbanews and Archives.

Gallery/Oekaki/Art Department : Kasumi
Bulbagarden's Gallery, its Oekaki, and its Art Department do not accept staff applications except during staff recruitment drives. Outside of them, new staff will be hired on an invitation basis only. In all cases, but particularly with out-of-recruitment-drive hires, members who have contributed in some way to Bulbagarden (such as members who've joined and been active in our development group) will be considered over applicants who have not.

This area hires four distinct types of staff, split into two distinct groups as follows.

Gallery & Oekaki Moderators
The primary job for Gallery moderators is to make sure artworks on our fanart gallery have been properly categorized, and that items which break the rules (such as not actually being fanart to begin with, which we get a lot of) are promptly removed. Moderators will also need to respond to cases of offensive commentary on the artworks.

Oekaki moderators are responsible for patrolling our Oekaki board, removing offensive art, and offensive commentary on the art.

Applicants for either of these positions will ideally be active within Bulbagarden's art circles (either on the Oekaki or on BMGf), and have demonstrated a high level of maturity. Applicants should have a level of artistic ability, however art skill is not a main deciding factor for these moderation positions. Experience in constructively critiquing art is also a very big plus.

Artists & Pixel Artists
Staff artists for Bulbagarden, with general artists being tasked with creating new logos, banners and skins for the entire website, while specialist pixel artists would work primarily on buttons, emoticons, smilies and sprites for the forums.

Applicants for either of these positions will ideally be active within Bulbagarden's art circles (either on the Oekaki or on BMGf), though this is not a formal requirement of the position. The primary criteria you will be judged on is artistic skill and creativity.

Applicants for either of the above positions should forward a PM to Kasumi with a statement of interest about a paragraph in length (4-7 sentences), outlining why you want to work on Bulbagarden. If applying for an artist position, you should also include samples of your previous work, and a link to your online portfolio if you have one.

Chat : Misty & Satoshi-kun
Staff for Bulbagarden's IRC Chat channels all begin as Half-Ops. To be considered for the position, you need to be a long time active member in good standing with the #bulbagarden community.

Bulbagarden does not accept staff applications for its IRC Chat channels, ever, even during staff recruitment drives. Barring cases where interest is solicited in running a new channel, new chat staff will be hired on an invitation basis only.

Bulbagarden Roleplay District : AiedailEclipsed
The Bulbagarden Roleplay Division accepts staff applications all year round, regardless of if we are currently conducting a recruitment drive or not. Staff hires in this section fall into two categories, as follows. Conditions for recruitment for these positions follow the conditions for BMGf when not specified otherwise.

Roleplaying Games Forum Staff
We are currently looking for two to three dedicated people to help out in the Roleplaying Games forum. This job entails keeping up with the forums' organization, and moderating the roleplaying game experience of the users. Overall duties include but are not limited to: moving misplaced threads, answering questions regarding RPG forum policy, helping any game master in his or her duties if he or she so requests, and resolving disputes and upholding the RPG forum rules.

Interested applicants should PM to Archaic, evkl and AiedailEclipsed a a statement of interest about a paragraph in length (4-7 sentences), outlining why you want to work in the Roleplaying Games forum and why you would be a good fit for the position, together with a list of four RP's (including links) that you have created and run, as well as links to any other pertinent materials.

Bulbagarden Roleplay District Game Managers
We are currently accepting any number of dedicated people to help manage Bulbagarden-sponsored roleplaying games, both as staff and as overall managers of these RPG's.

Interested applicants should PM to Archaic, evkl and AiedailEclipsed a statement of interest about a paragraph in length (4-7 sentences), outlining why you want to work in the Bulbagarden Roleplay District and why you would be a good fit for the position, together with a list of four RP's (including links) that you have created and run, as well as links to any other pertinent materials. If intending to create and manage a new Bulbagarden-sponsored roleplaying game (or expand a smaller game you've run in the RPG forum into a full blown Bulbagarden-sponsored game), you will need to include a brief design document for your proposed game. If you run an RPG on an external forum or blog that you wish to bring to Bulbagarden, you should link that in your PM.

  • As a note, by definition, Roleplaying Games Staff are Bulbagarden Roleplay District Game Managers, and the same could be said in reverse; however, they will not be given the position at the start, and if the occasion calls for it, a new mod for this forum would be chosen from the Bulbagarden Roleplay District Games Managers.
  • Any URPG Ranger, FB ZA, or KPU AP (and above) wishing to apply for these positions may use material from their respective RPGs.
  • The RP examples, while preferred to be on Bulbagarden, may come from other major internet forums.

Library & Content : ???
The Bulbagarden Library & Content accepts applications for staff all year round, regardless of if we are currently conducting a recruitment drive or not. In all cases, but particularly with out-of-recruitment-drive hires, members who have contributed in some way to Bulbagarden (such as members who've joined and been active in our development group) will be considered over applicants who have not.

Librarians & Content Moderators
The primary job for both the above roles is to make sure that content with their respective area (Fanfiction Library for Librarians, Non-Encyclopedical Articles for Content Moderators) of our upcoming Content Management System has been correctly categorized, and that items which break the rules are promptly removed. Each will also need to respond to cases of offensive commentary on both user-submitted content and on internally published works.

Interested applicants should forward Archaic and evkl a PM with a statement of interest about a paragraph in length (4-7 sentences), outlining why you want to work on the Library & Content section, along with any other pertinent material.

Intresting. It would be cool to be a mod on the forums. I don't think they'd let me though.

Just submit your application to the parties of the above sections. If it's a "no", then there's always a next time, or even before that if you've proven yourself.

My point is I'm pretty sure they'll say no considering that fact that I got the banhammer a couple weeks ago. And wasn't it you that gave it to me?

Well getting a ban doesn't always mean a "No" though, if you do get rejected, you should always try to be more helpful to the community and contribute more.

EDIT: Will the people who have applied:
a) Get to know that their application is being considered?
b) Get to know if they have been accepted or rejected before the 2 week deadline?

Thanks

A ban doesn't necessarily mean an automatic no.

A) All applications received are being considered.
B) There will be a formal post (probably here) to name all those selected. Probably after the deadline.

Ah, finally.
I was waiting for this opportunity since 2009.
Thanks a lot Bulbagarden team for this wonderful opportunity.
Let's hope for the best :D
*fingers crossed xD*

Good luck to everyone who applies. :3

To expand a little more, yes we've gotten your application. If you're concerned about that ask me if I've gotten your app and I'll check and tell you. We won't be talking about the status of the applications/etc. So if you ask, we just aren't going to tell you. It's nothing personal to any of you, but it really gives us a big extra burden that we don't need during a very busy time. That means no "how's my application looking?" and no "so who's the front-runner?"

As Saturn said, our decisions will be made public after the application period ends.

Do the roleplays cited for the RP District Mod have to be on this forum?

Aww, dang. I would have loved to apply for one of the RPG forum positions but I never started a own RP. Anyway, good luck to those who apply.

Everybody...

This thread is more to answer questions about the application process and such. Posting "omgzz imma apply" or "shit I only have 13 posts they probly wont give me mods" isn't especially constructive. I'm not going to infract people for it, but I'm just generally saying that it clogs up the thread and makes it ever so slightly more difficult for us to answer questions.

Thanks.

I have a question:

Is this Library section connected or the same as the Writer's Workshop?

I'm a little confused as to applying for the Art Department/Artist's Alcove.
Who exactly do I send the PM's to and what should I say in them? I know I'm supposed to send them to Archaic and evkl, but seeing as I'm applying for a Artist's Alcove job, should I send it to Kasumi as well?
