How can the anime be improved?

Objectively i don't have much faith in any of us suggestions and pleas ever being heard out or taken in consideration. Because as much as depending on individuality of certain saga and who is in charge they sometime play out with viewers expectations doing unpredictable changes here and there(breaking patterns) to elevate people enthusiasm in Pokemon anime being ready to evolve and narrate decent and enthralling storytelling. When in reality those changes are minor modifications in grand scheme of things misleading fans.

In end it all returns back to square one with status quo essentially remaining unchanged and unchallenged.

But for sake of entertaining this subject, here are some of things from my part which pokemon series should change to become better:
-more lively group dynamic. Interactions where there would be present more to dialogue between characters than just politeness, positivity and sappy, cheerful support. Such as moments when Ash and others get in clash over something working on their differences. Tension, comedy, sarcasm and drama. Having gradual development of relationship and realiatic portrayal of human communicatipon where there isn't present harmony 100% of time.

-better rivals. Rivals who actually present threat and obstacle for Ash and his companions to overcome. Who challenge their ways of training and teaching putting them in corner and pushing them to improve and learn on mistakes. Unlike it was case with XYZ or BW series where big majority of rivals were punching bags always being behind main protagonists.

-beter repartition of screentime between humans and pokemon. With each of main protagonists feeling active, of purpose and having their story move forward through course of whole series. Instead of having their development and spotlight scattered with some receiving focus in one season a cost of others being neglected, just to have reverse scenario in second one. Same applies to pokemon , because while its unrealistic to expect that each member of team receive equal attention, use and development. On other hand extreme exposition of one or two particular pokemon at cost of overshadowing everyone else(like it was case with Greninja for example) is not desirable and productive for balanced and healthy story telling.

-There should be continuity existing in Alola saga, instead of having none at all or very few and scattered across random nods to past..

Actually upcoming Sun and Moon should have lot of throwbacks to past and references not forgetting about Ash past achievements. Pokemon he caught, previous friends making regular returns and getting updates, promises he made and experience which helped to shape him up in person/trainer he is today. Addiing that way some background behind Ash travels around the world and more substance,

But most importantly living up to message of this anime actually being one continuous adventure set in same timeline and universe going up in line with next yer being 20th year anniversary of pokemon anime existence. Doing something actually unexpected and memorable to mark this milestone instead of leaving only that to games with anime staff just ignoring everything as they usually do.

Because they have ton of unique interesting characters with unanswered things and open stories to take them in new fresh adventures and go on next, more complex stage of character development. Not following rookies, but mature, badass, more competent girls or males who already have formed friendship with Ash, skills and solid groundwork accomplishing more demanding challenges. Developing new interests and perception on things achieving their dreams.

With Alola as resort, vacation destination with its geography, culture and tropic like environment beng perfect place to have several surprising returns of familiar faces from past. Such as Misty, May, Brock, Iris, Tracey, Gary, Dawn etc, etc. Hell with all this talk about school and graduation Ash will be involved into, I wouldn't actually mind his past friends being dragged in classrooms learning themselves some new things of crucial importance to their own careers and goals.Forcing them to
put their knowledge from practice in theory trying to build on their skills and familiarity with pokemon they care about. With only Alola having required specialists and trials to have them learn things they couldn't otherwise through typical training and battling, putting them in their discomfort zone.
That would if anything create foundation for incredibly rich cast chemistry bursting with fire, clash, drama and passion.

And i already brought up more than once how region like Alola brimming with so much water, oceans, perfect environment to make good use of otherwise usually underused aquatic water pokemon being pervated with water themes is natural, logical and great environment to justify comeback of some like Misty. Who could learn ALOT in how to unlock full potential of her pokemon helping her to advance dreams of becoming water master and reach E4 level of strength in future. To uncomparable level than being locked at gym would.

Needless to say i dont know about others but im interested in what became of not just Misty but several other character being put to some prominent use in pokemon again. Therefore welcoming if Sun and Moon series wouldn't actually ignore and discard away past like this anime was doing not jut lately. But several years ago.

This are things pokemon series should have started implementing long time ago in order to have well planned, cohesive and natural flow of adventure. But still even if it may be too late, its still better late than never to try turning show we grew up with and liked/like toward higher quality.

How about not releasing all of Ash's best pokemon? That would improve the show. And no more having someone like Iris and Serena.

I want better battles! More suspance, more techniques! I want the exciting battles of Pokémon Diamond&Pearl! Ash VS Paul was just AMAZING. I LOVED them!

Gonna echo the sentiments about giving the female lead better goals. I can't believe they thought it was okay to repeat the contest plot three times with three different female player characters.

To be fair, there are plenty of differences between May and Dawn's Contests arc to where I don't think you could really consider them too similar. If anything, Dawn benefited a lot from being the second Coordinator since the writers knew what to do with Contests and how to make them more distinct from regular battles by DP, so it's not like they were lazy by going with two Coordinators in a row. I thought that worked out perfectly fine.

I'm not sure if I'd say that Serena had a contest plot per say. Showcases are basically glorified Contest appeals, but without all of the effort, talent and skills put into them since they're basically popularity contests. It's not similar to actual Pokemon Contests, but it is weak how this was the goal they decided to give Serena after a year or so into the series. I didn't mind Serena taking too long to find a goal in XY at the time, but looking at it in retrospect, I wonder why they made that decision in the first place. Another year probably wouldn't have made Showcases better, but Serena could have maybe struggled beyond her or her Pokemon falling on stage. I agree that the female leads need better goals, especially after how bad Showcases turned out in my opinion, but I don't think Contests were a bad idea to do twice in a row. It was the only plot for female characters that seemed to work out pretty well all things considered, especially compared to how the other female leads were handled.

My only response is give Ash's Pokemon fair treatment... Kalos was just as horrific at this as Unova was without the multiple reserve excuse. That in part may have been the nerf to Valerie and Olympia, but Pikachu and Noibat/Noviern were lost to us around the 6th gym and battles became stale as Ash only ever battled Sawyer and Alain, and Team Rocket. Where are all the COTD battlers? We need more battles in a show that is suppose to make us want to play the games

Make it more like the manga

I think rather use megaevolutions wise and not overuse them in future.

+ show large amount of longer battles with difrent pokemon, moves(with proper effects) and abilities
Diffrent strategies

+ show difrent animation and style of usement of some moves

Like the way Shadow Sneak could work, like jumping in own shadow to come and attack from oponents shadow or sending your self in your shadow and takling the oponent.

(Dragontail should switch out a pokemon)

-make Ash battle Greninja and Zygarde that are posessed by some ancient evil.

A good female co-star (again) that actually has some good goals.
More Pokemon evolution.
Better rivals, and more of them.
Having older characters re-appear, some just cameos but others being recurring characters would be nice too.
More variety in Ash`s Pokemon (hope he never gets all 3 starters ever again! Even 2 starters is too many really).
An actual romantic plot that leads somewhere for one (or more) of the main characters.
No more Team Rocket!

Just one thing: Don't make Ash Ketchum the sole focus and center of the entire universe.

In Naruto, Dragonball, One Piece, Yu-Gi-Oh, etc. These shows never ever made the protagonist being the one that must be featured in every single episode, nor have him involved in every single incidents that happens there on-screen, nor have him always be the one to take the most credit. These shows balance the screen times with many main characters and supporting characters, they also make many events and incidents happens regardless of the immediate presence of the protagonist, and it is not necessary that those events must be resolved by the protagonist. The movement of the universe within those shows are not controllable by the protagonist, the earths in these shows will still continues to rotate even if the protagonist doesn't exist.

I hope Pokemon Anime can be a bit more like that. Ash Ketchum can still be the protagonist of the show, but he doesn't need to present in there every single episodes. Let other main characters had their stories, and let other characters be the focus of some episodes, let other characters involved more in many important events, let other characters contributes to the progress of the story, let other characters contributes to the development of Ash Ketchum.

I'm not very satisfy with the current plot format of the Pokemon Anime, because it is like the story of each characters are parallel to each other with no conjunction. Ash's plot is running regardless of presence of other characters, the heroine's plot is moving regardless of presence of other characters, main characters are not helping nor interfering with other main characters' business, nor they causes any significant influence to the progression of each other's plot. Each character's plot are separate from each other.
If the characters are not interfering with each other's business, why do we need characters following Ash Ketchum around? This is not just the problem of group chemistry in the conversations and dialogues, but more of the in-depth concern of developmental influences between each other.

Please, the PokeEarth is not centered around Ash. I really don't like many of the incidents and events happens conveniently only upon the arrival of Ash. It is like if Ash is not presented, the time in those places are stopped forever. Show us some episodes where villains are working on their own stuffs and how they interacts within their gangs, show us more Pokemon Chronicle kind of episodes of what the side characters do when Ash is no more around. There are too little to none villain/side characters focusing episodes in Pokemon Anime. Increase them please. And not meaning only at the end of an arc, it needs more during the run.

This is just my current 2 cents. Will post more when I think of something.

Shaking up more conflicts.

I've always mumbled how "happy" those episodes were on screen. In my opinion, such stories provide proofs of emotionless human life. What I want is Ash and co. are able to create tension between them. Not because I support dark-scripted anime, at least give few brilliant plots reserved and good, cunning twists to prevent derivative flows.

They can also stop replacing and forgetting Ash's friends at the beginning of a new series and stop rebooting him.

Have Ash not be such a one-dimensional character. Too often, it seems like he has absolutely no personality aside from "I must become the best Pokémon trainer!" Also, I want to have more instances where Ash gets to re-use one of his older Pokémon for one reason or another.

some episodes could focus on battles of others.
Like show Ash rival having a full battle with someone, like Paul had with Cynthia.

None of this will ever happen realistically speaking, but...

- Have Ash win a Regional League
- Have Ash become a Pokemon Master
- Have Team Rocket become serious again
- Have Team Rocket realize they are good people at heart and take down Giovanni etc. from the inside
- Drop the current continuity and start anew- do what Digimon, Beyblade, Yu-Gi-Oh, etc. did and start from the ground up with a new protagonist and antagonists to follow

i would say the series was at it's best in dp so I would go in a similar direction making the show more consistently mature turning it more into a full blown family show
