Week 334a: The Sister of the Beasts, part 1
(real tale: The Little Sister of the Giants)
"Once upon a time there was a little girl who was very beautiful." Brock begins as he arrives onstage. "Her eyes were a deep green, like a pair of fine emeralds; her hair a beautiful midnight black; her smile like the dawn. As she grew older, she grew also more and more beautiful."
He thinks a moment for a suitable name for his heroine. "We'll call her Angeline." he suggests to the crowd.
Applause goes up in approval of the name. "Angeline’s mother had died when Angeline was very little, and her father had married a second time." Brock explains. "The stepmother--who does not deserve to be named--was a woman who was renowned for her great beauty. As her stepdaughter grew more and more beautiful every day, she soon became jealous of Angeline. Every night she would ask the father who was more beautiful, her or Angeline?"
He assures the audience "Now, Angeline's father was a wise man, and knew all about his wife’s jealousy. So he always responded that she was the more beautiful."
He then intones "One year, the father suddenly died from a horrible disease, and stepmother and stepdaughter were left alone in the world. They both mourned deeply the passing of their husband and father, but before long, people said that although the stepmother was beautiful, Angeline was even more so. At first, the stepmother merely tolerated this, but eventually, she couldn't stand it any longer, and locked Angeline inside a hidden room in the attic."
Murmurs go up as Brock continues "The hidden room in the attic had only one tiny window high up in the wall. The window was usually shut, but Angeline would often climb up to open it in order to get a little air. The next afternoon she grew weary of being confined in the room, so she dug a foothold in the wall where she could stand up and look out the window."
He reminds the audience "But even though Angeline was confined there in that lonely room, people still said she was the more beautiful of the two."
"Ooh"s go up as Brock continues "This was the last straw for the stepmother, so she ordered a servant to carry the girl into the jungle and kill her, telling him to bring back her heart as proof the deed had been done."
Concerned murmurs go up, but Brock quickly reminds them "If you think you know where this is going, I can assure you this is different."
He goes on "Anyway, Angeline was glad to be out of the little room, and went out for a walk with the servant with a light heart. They walked through the city streets and out into the open country. Soon they had reached the deep jungle, and after an hour or so, they were so far in the jungle that the path was entirely overgrown. No ray of light penetrated through the deep foliage, and Angeline grew very scared, begging the servant to tell her where they were going. The servant finally burst into tears and told Angeline of her stepmother's evil command. He went on to say that he couldn't hurt, much less kill, an innocent girl whose only crime was her beauty and kindness--and that was no crime that deserved death."
Murmurs go up as Brock continues "Angeline thought for a moment, then told the servant to return to his mistress with the heart of a Tauros. The stepmother believed the servant's lie, and thought that Angeline was gone for good."
He grins. "But Angeline was very much alive, and would befriend much more powerful companions than seven dwarves--I will tell you who they were and how her stepmother was defeated next week!"
"Aw"s and applause fill the air as Brock takes a bow...
