In the games, Kaki lives on Akala Island. That's where the Ohana Ranch resides. As well as his hometown. The fact they are going to another island tells me that we are not expect a traditional adventure given how easy it is to go from one small island to the next. School is the central hub and I don't see it leaving anytime soon.

That is true, but one could argue that since Kaki has a Lizardon as his Rider Pokémon, there is no excuse to put Ohana Ranch in Melemele island.
