From a worldbuilding perspective I find the implication Pokémon can go hitchhiking and possibly get a ride very interesting.
Maybe it would only work for human like ones?
It's possible Delia will talk to Ash over the phone or come visit the lab rather than Pikachu going all the way to Pallet town, but I could see that happening too.
