CHAPTER 56

========================

December 28th:

“Dani, Dani, Dani…”

“Kyle, Kyle, Kyle…” Daniela was on the phone to her boyfriend. She laid down on her bed reading through a tour guide book on Hawaii while flicking her dark brown bangs away from her ice blue eyes. “You’ll have fun in Hong Kong.”

“But I feel bad for being away for NYE.”

“You're away for most of the year. I'll be in Hawaii anyway,” She licked her finger before flicking a page. “I wonder if I could go and walk on volcanoes.”

“I don’t know, you in the beaches wearing a bikini….”

“Oh come on, Plonkie,” Daniela scoffed. “You think I’ll hook up with those surfer guys? I’m with family. Relax.”

“I get that but you’re hot.”

“Honey, don’t play that jealously card on me,” She yawned over the phone. “What about you?”

“What about me?”

“You’re going to Hong Kong and a lot of hot women shop there.”

“But Dani, it’s me.”

She flicked through the pages to Maui. “Exactly, you are hot. Have you looked in a mirror? Hello, even Francesca who’s a super hot supermodel thinks you’re hot. What’s not to say that you’ll hook up with some slutty Hong Kong chick.”

“It’s not going to happen.”

“Exactly, so don’t play that jealously bullshit with me,” Daniela sternly remarked over the phone. “Have I given you a reason not to trust me?”

“Umm.....”

“Shut up! Anyway I have to call Joel. Call me when you reach there,” She rolled her cell phone closer to herself on her queen sized bed. “Love you.”

“Love you too.”

“Bye!!!” She hung up and immediately dialed Joel’s cell phone whistling some Britney Spears.

-----------------------------

Somewhere in Los Angeles:

The sound of a cell phone going off made one teenager groan. “Is that your phone?” Joel rolled off a queen sized bed he was on. He looked around the room which was pretty rustic. There were wooden drawers including a big mirror on top. There were wooden tables and the bed was made out of wood. The light pink curtains blew around as he could feel the breeze tickle his face.

“No, it’s your phone.”

“Great…” He muttered to himself as he chucked on a pair of pants and a shirt. “Hello?”

“Where are you?” He could hear Daniela yell over the phone. “You’re supposed to be here. We leave for the airport in 4 hours.”

“Yeah, yeah I’ll be there. See you.” Joel hung up the phone and immediately realized “Shit.”

“What’s wrong?” A brunette woman got out of her bed. It was Katherine Russell, Joel’s ex-girlfriend’s older sister. She wore nothing but a white bra and blue satin shorts.

“Not much except I’m supposed to leave for Hawaii in 6 hours and I’ve done no packing.” Joel panicked. “And I’m here in your bedroom not long after I broke up with your sister. I slept with you and I didn’t sleep with your sister. Man, this is crazy.”

“Relax,” Katherine chuckled. “You’re cute when you’re frazzled.” She kissed him on the cheek. “Just have a shower.”

“Can’t, I’ll go home and shower. So…” Joel grabbed his car keys from her wooden bedside table which was on top of a book. He looked at the book “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. How’s the book?”

“It’s fun. Kind of keeps me sane.” Katherine held a hair clip in her mouth as she tied her silky brown hair. “Hawaii sounds fun.”

“You’ve been there?” He asked as he tried to find “Where’s my socks?” He asked looking around her bed to find them. “I had two white socks and I don’t see them anywhere and I’m going to be late and the family is going to kill me.”

“You mean these socks?” Katherine pointed at her feet. He looked down and pouted his lips. “I was cold.” She sat down on her bed and took them off. She threw them at him.

“So…” Joel struggled to put his socks on while standing and talking. “Where does this leave us?”

“Us?” She yawned. “Joel, there is no us. We can’t date.”

“Huh?”

“Cause…” She sat down watching him put on his socks with her arms around her knees. “I’m a head of a sorority and you’re in student politics. I’m a senior and you’re a freshman, and you dated Hannah, my little sister. If anyone caught wind….”

“Then we’ll be screwed.” He succeeded with the socks and then came the shoes. “But it’s not like you’re a teacher and I’m a student.”

“It’s a conflict of interest, Joel. Your party hates sororities and frats and if they see you screwing around with someone of my stature, you know you’ll be kicked out of the party and that will follow us for a long time,” She explained as she got up to brush her hair. “I’m not going to be here for much longer, so it doesn’t matter that much to me but for you…you’ll be known as the guy who got kicked out of a student party for sleeping around. You don’t want that to follow you.”

“Yeah…”

“Plus it’s fun…” She smiled through the mirror as she looked at his reflection. “Just having sex and nothing more. Better than any relationship I’ve had in a while. Is Dani going to Hawaii?”

“The whole family,” He explained. “She's a bit bummed. Her boyfriend is going overseas to Hong Kong and…” He saw the time on Katherine’s digital alarm clock on her bedside table. “11 30 and I’m off. See you later, Kat.” He was about to ran off before giving Katherine a quick kiss on the cheek.

"Enjoy!"

--------------------------

30 minutes later:

Daniela heard her phone ring. She groaned when she picked it up. The first thought coming into her mind was “It better not be Joel...” but she answered it anyway as she sat right next to a red suitcase. “Hello?”

“Dani!!! Hi, it’s me Jasmine.”

“What do you want?” She asked coldly.

“Dani, I know it’s winter but girl you’re a cold. I’m just saying hi to my friend. Don’t you remember all the fun times we had in middle school? Remember how you got that weird foreign kid’s glasses and sold them off at a pawn store? Classic or that time when we stole from the vending machines and those test answers. Oh remember those popular girls’ perfumes that we stole?”

“That was in the past, Jasmine.”

“See that’s the problem with you. You’re too soft. You said you were going to stir shit up when I saw you in Colorado two years ago but I see you now and it’s like what the hell happened to you? This isn’t the bitch I knew from middle school.”

“I grew up.”

“Don’t believe that, Dani but before you get all angry at me, I want to make a deal. You know how I recorded you saying that you’ll steal that chick’s boyfriend and sleep with him basically to fuck her over because you hated her?”

“I still can't believe you did that.”

“Well you know I’ve not been a good friend, so I’ll make you a deal. I’ll give you the tape and yes there is one because I’m nice….I’ll give you the tape if you do my course work for me. See my parents are like Jasmine you have to get good marks and shit because strict Asian parents or whatever and I haven’t because hello hot guys.”

“Get to the point…” Daniela ordered sternly as she clutched her phone with a very tight grip.

“You are so boring. Anyway do my work for me and your friends and your boyfriend won’t find out that you broke up his relationship so you could sleep with him. Does that sound like a deal because I don’t have much to lose but you have a boyfriend to lose.”

Daniela thought about it, mused over it but in the end “Fine…”

“Yay! I knew you would help me. Isn’t that what friends are for?”

“Go to hell….”

“So mean but you know I have a date, so you see you later, hoe.”

Daniela hung up the phone and tapped it against her knee. She couldn’t believe that she trusted Jasmine which such valuable information in the first place. She slapped her head before flinching.

---------------------

Two Days Later:
Madison, WI.

It was a cold evening as the snow fell and the temperature kind of also fell. William was sitting watching MTV wearing several layers since the heater broke down. “This sucks.” He exclaimed in annoyance. “This is boring.”

“Well,” Alicia sat down next to him wearing a green turtleneck jumper and grey pants and reading a book written by Hemingway. “I don’t get this. I’m not an artistic person.” She shut the book and threw it on to the small glass coffee table. “It’s not that bad.”

“It is that bad. Kyle’s going to Hong Kong. Kind of funny since my parents are going there. I should have gone with them but no I thought I was too cool to see family that don’t understand why I'm gay and here I am cold as a dead penguin.” Will complained as he picked up the television remote and muted the ads on TV. “Why couldn’t we go on a trip?”

“We still could,” Alicia perked up after getting an idea. “I have a friend that lives in Pittsburgh. How fair is Pittsburgh from Madison?”

“I guess about a 10 hour drive?” He shrugged not knowing the answer.

“Actually…” The dark haired black teen picked up her phone. “I got a better idea.”

“You mean a stupid idea?”

“I’m not Kyle,” Alicia defended herself. “Tony? Hi, what are you doing? Ah huh, ah huh…okay stopped caring but you want to go on a trip? Where? I don’t know Winnipeg? Yes Winnipeg, Canada. Because we’re bored and everyone is out of the country. Fine….” She hung up and threw her phone on to a cushion.

“What did he say?” He asked.

“We’re going to Winnipeg. So let’s surf the net and make some calls for some hotels. Wait…you have a passport with you?”

“My family goes to China a lot, so yeah we do. What about you?”

“Yes, yes I do. Can’t believe we’re going to Winnipeg, Canada. I think we’ve been around Kyle too much but a trip is a trip.” Alicia got up. “Now we have to find a travel agent.”

“Or we can call one.”

"Or that," Alicia picked up her phone and was about to dial. "My parents are you going to kill you."

"They'll kill you for something anyway," Will shrugged. "Get it over with."

"Good point!"

--------------------------

December 30th:
Location: Maui!!!

The sun was shining, the birds were singing, the trees were breezing, it was just another amazing day in Maui. Their resort overlooked the beautiful sandy beaches and the crystal blue ocean. Bette and Sean enjoyed the view but for the other members of the family? They were enjoying the beach.

The beach was sublime; the blue waves were crashing the white sandy beaches as people were either catching some waves, jet skiing, swimming or those that preferred the mainland, they were playing touch football, volleyball, building sandcastles, reading a book under an umbrella or in Daniela’s case, getting some 'tannage'. She wore a red two piece bikini as she watched the waves wearing a pair of sunglasses. She was sitting on a red blanket.

She was approached by a tanned man. “Hey.” He had a tanned chiseled chest and a six pack abs. He had short jet black hair and stood at over 6’3’

“And what do you want?” She didn’t even take a glance at him.

“What’s a nice girl like you doing at the beach alone?” He asked her.

Daniela looked around, she thought the guy was kind of a try hard but normally that wouldn't stop her from jumping all over that but something told her otherwise like a talking cricket on her shoulder with a top hat. “I’m with family and I have a boyfriend and he would say bugger off.”

“Yeah, well…” He couldn’t take the hint even if it was obvious. “Does he have muscles like me?”

“In his brain, loser.”

His friend heard him get shut down. “Oooh dude you got served.”

“Shut up, dude.” He yelled back.

“Whatever…” Daniela got up. “I don’t have time for this. You go find some stupid bimbo to be like you're so strong.” She picked up her blanket and cleaned up sand from her thighs. “Have fun. I’m going to find something better to do with my time.” She walked away from those beach bums. “I wonder if the nature walk is good?” Daniela thought to herself.

Elsewhere, Joel was on a surfboard that he rented. He was trying to paddle himself into the waves. He had a general gist of how to surf after Gisela kind of taught him. The light brown haired teen found a spot and laid down on his surfboard waiting for the waves to hit. Everything was going swimmingly until he saw this amazing surfer in a wetsuit, surfing like a god. Every break was perfect to a tee. He caught a glimpse of her face but nothing more. Joel shrugged and went with it.

However there was something familiar with the glimpse he caught and immediately without hesitation paddled back to shore. He shook his head trying to get some sand out of his hair and excess water. He saw the surfer heading back to shore. “Hey, man you were….” She turned around immediately as Joel talked to her.

“Joel?”

“Silvia?”

Silvia, the lost love. Joel remembered their break-up visibly. She dumped him to pursue a professional surfing career. She had this amazing body, dark brown hair that could be mistaken for black and beautiful green eyes that matched her olive complexion. “What are you doing here?”

“Holiday. What about you?”

“The same. Wow….” She looked at him. “You’re a lot different looking than I remembered. So….” She looked around awkwardly. “How’s things?”

“Good, good….” He felt the same way. “I heard you’ve been doing good.”

Silvia looked at her watch and then could see the crowds. “I have some time; you want to get something to eat?” If anything her Brazilian accent had gotten stronger than he remembered.

"Umm....yeah sure."

---------------------------

Hong Kong:

It was night time in the bustling metropolis. The buildings were lit up in various bright neon lights that made it look absolutely gorgeous. The bright neon signs painted the city like color and character. Kyle and Gisela were taken aback by how beautiful the city looked at night.

“This is just amazing…” Kyle said breathlessly trying to take it all in. It wasn’t only ascetically pleasing but the city had a lot of character from the British and Chinese cultures blending together. As they walked through the main part of the city, they could see buses, taxis, and cars stuck in what seemed to be perpetually long traffic jams. They walked by several street vendors, cafes, restaurants and stores that seemed to be open for hours on end. There were still several people walking around talking in Cantonese.

“Let’s go like clubbing!” Gisela said with glee. She was wearing a black top and jeans with her blonde hair tied in a bun.

“How about no,” Kyle shut that idea down. “I’m not going to a club with my sister. You know how weird that is?”

“Ewww….” A mental image came across Gisela’s mind. “Any ideas?”

“Well we can go pubbing.” He shrugged while flicking a piece of lint from his loose white t-shirt. He wore them along with chinos.

Gisela looked at him. “Pubbing?”

“Oh yeah pubbing. It’s just basically bar hopping.”

“You Australians are like so weird.” She slapped him on his back. “Great idea.”

“Really?” He rubbed his back in pain. “Was that necessary?”

"Totally, don't be like a baby,” She chuckled. “Let’s go find a pub.”

“Bloody hell that hurts…” He rubbed his back as the locals watched the pair of them interact. “Still a lot of British people…” He saw a few white people walking around. “Guess the turnover wasn’t that quick.”

“Didn’t China get back Hong Kong in like 1997?”

“Yeah.”

“Well it’s not like Uganda in the 70’s. That was total turnover.” Gisela knew her stuff, a lot more than given credit and a lot more than several people.

“Errr…what?” He stood there confused.

“Like as if you don’t know about Uganda’s history in the 60’s and 70’s with like Idi Amin.” Gisela scoffed as they crossed a road just as the traffic stopped. “Where’s like all the good bars?” She asked. “Cause like do we need a taxi or a bus?”

“Can’t say I do…” He was really impressed about his sister’s general knowledge. Kyle filled through a map in his pocket. “Man….” He scratched his head. “Lan Kwai Fong? I heard that areas has several bars and shit. Let’s just catch a taxi.”

“Alrighty!” Gisela and Kyle walked up to a taxi stand. They were behind several people in suits after working long hours, looking tired and dazed. Several cars and buses drive past drowned by the sounds of the chaos among the city. People chatting away, loud Cantonese music, sounds of traffic lights telling people to walk or not, cars and buses driving by, the sound of food being cooked, fried and people walking around. “Taxi!” She called out. "What’s the place again?”

“Lan Kwai Fong.”

Gisela got inside the taxi in the back seat. “You say it.”

Kyle looked at the driver. “Lan Kwai Fong?”

“Okay, okay.” The taxi driver smiled as he turned the knob for the volume. The radio in his car was playing local music which the two tourists couldn’t understand. He smiled at Kyle who awkwardly smiled back. Gisela thought the taxi driver knew where to go but her brother had other thoughts.

--------------------------

Los Angeles:

“These holidays suck…” Courtney sighed as she was shopping with Chris. “My boyfriend is in Fiji, my best friend is in Hong Kong with her brother, and Joel and Dani are in Hawaii. Did you ring Alicia and Tony?” They were walking side by side window shopping. There wasn’t much to do since the sales were done and it was still the same fashion season.

They walked passed a café. “So how are you and geekward doing?”

“You know I haven’t seen him since 25th and now it’s going to be year 2000. Who spends new years’ in Fiji?” Courtney exclaimed in an annoyed tone. “It’s the worst.”

“Your boyfriend? Isn’t Fiji that place where local girls walk around with their boobs out or was that Africa?” Chris looked down Courtney’s top. “Huh…”

“What?” She asked not realizing where his eyes were.

“Nothing….I’m just saying maybe we should do something,” He shrugged. “I think Thorpe and Muller are going to be in Hong Kong for New Years. Harris and Cooper are gonna be in Hawaii and I think Harrison and Howard are going to be in Canada, so I have an idea!”

“I’m not leaving LA.”

“God dammit, Courtney. Could be headed to New Orleans, New York, Saudi Arabia, Botswana, Burma, Turkmenistan, Uruguay, Kuwait, Slovakia…”

“Are you just naming countries now?” She interrupted him.

“The world is a place of things, and Gisela taught me those names. I like Norway because it’s like No….way. Get it?” Chris laughed to himself as they walked towards the food court. The food court was packed. “Slovakia sounds cool and did you know there’s a Slovenia? Crazy.”

“Shut up Chris…” Courtney sighed as she pushed some of her red hair away from her right ear. Chris in all his glory continued to stare at Courtney’s breasts. Still unaware, the woman asked “What are your plans?”

“Dunno I guess since most of the team has gone back home, I’ll probably think of something.” Then an idea clicked in his head. “There’s this hockey game in Anaheim, we could go there and then to Disneyland to celebrate New Year’s.”

“Is Disneyland even open in New Years?” She asked kind of feeling the idea. They were sitting down and while the aromas of fried chicken, potato chips, Mexican food and the strong scent of Chinese food whiffed through the air.

“I guess we could always check,” Chris shrugged. “What do you think?”

“I like it.” She smiled. “I’ll book the tickets and stuff.”

“Alright, this should be rocking. Maybe next year everyone else will be here. Y2K and we gonna celebrate it in style.”

-------------------------

Location: Maui!!!!

“It’s just weird seeing you again…” Joel couldn’t believe that his ex-girlfriend aka the one that got away, was sitting right in front of him. “So….how’s life?”

They were sitting inside a wooden dingy little hut like restaurant. Everything was practically wood even most of the kitchen. It brought a nice, quiet, old atmosphere to it. “Life is good,” Silvia nodded slightly. “How are you? What are you doing now?”

“Now? I’m at UCLA, college life. I’m here with family…that’s about it.” He shrugged while tapping away to the local music. “Life good?”

“Life is good.” She repeated.

“I’m sorry, it’s just weird seeing you after such a long time. I don’t know…” He bit his nails. “Look I’m going to jump into it. I missed you, you were like this awesome woman in my life.”

“What about now?”

“Well….” Joel thought about all the women in his life. “There was Chloe, she’s was odd but she moved to the mid-north, her dad was a principal. Then there was Maria, she was ummm…kind of like perky but she went North Carolina and there was Hannah. Now Hannah was great but she was a bit too involved in politics and go arrested in a protest and finally there was Katherine…” He explained. “But she’s Hannah’s older sister and part of a sorority which Daniela is involved in. Now the problem is that I’m part of a political party that hates sororities and frats, she’s a senior and I’m a freshmen….and if anyone caught wind, we are doomed.”

“Sounds like you’ve been through a lot. How’s Daniela? I always liked her. She was spunky. Last time I heard she and that guy were dating.”

“Well she and him broke up ages ago, she’s dating Kyle. You remember Kyle Thorpe?”

“Yeah, he was that geek.”

“Well his mother married Gisela’s father and he’s not a geek anymore. He dated Courtney, you remember her?”

“Yeah.”

“And he also had an affair with a supermodel in Italy. Really hot, I met her when he and I went to Australia for a trip.” Joel continued to bite his nails. “Yeah, things have changed.”

“Wow! It is just like a telenovela. So you and Gisela never dated or did anything?” Silvia remembered how close they were to each other.

“No, no, nothing happened between us. We're good friends,” Joel explained waiting for something to eat. It was going to be a long wait since the whole place was crowded. “But man….I mean you just being here….wow. How long are you here for?”

“A couple of days. You?” Silvia gazed into his blue eyes.

He gazed back at her green eyes. “Until the 2nd of the new year. So what does that leave us?” He asked as he took her hand.

She looked down and seemed hesitant. “What about Katherine?”

“It's very open,” He let go of her hand. “I mean it’s your choice.”

“What’s the harm? A couple of days of a whirlwind romance? It does sound fun.” She smiled at him. “Let’s do it.”

-------------------------------

Hong Kong:

Gisela and Kyle were walking through Lan Kwai Fong. The bright neon signs lit in front of their faces, signs that said ‘Cheap Alcohol’ or featuring ‘so and so’. The street was filled by partygoers, those that were heading for a great time after work, tourists, or those that had nothing better to do in their lives. The area was a cobble-stoned maze full of bars, nightclubs and restaurants that intoxicated the senses. There were people screaming, singing loudly, dancing, or being harassed by con-artists dressed as monks.

Gisela bobbled her head to the infectious beat from one of the nightclubs. “Like come on Kyle, I wanna dance.”

“C’mon Gissy, I want to drink…” Kyle felt his arm being grabbed by her.

“Don’t be a geek, Kyle….”

“Hey, I’ve seen you guys before.” An Asian woman appeared before the squabbling siblings. “Weren’t you guys at the Christmas party at Daniela’s house.”

“You know Daniela?” Kyle raised his eyebrow.

“And Joel?” The blonde teenager looked at the woman.

“Oh yeah, Daniela and I go way back. She and I were the best of friends back in the day. You guys must be her friends! I’m Jasmine Wu.” Jasmine introduced herself with a smarmy grin on her face.

“I guess. I’m Gisela and this is my brother Kyle.”

“You know Daniela?” He was skeptical. “She never told me about you.”

“Silly Dani, she’s like that you know. I’m surprised she hasn’t told you about me because we have history together. You must be the boyfriend and wow she is lucky, you are so hot and that’s not the booze talking.” She laughed. “I better go before my cousin rips up that nightclub. See ya!”

“She’s never said anything about a Jasmine?” Gisela looked at Kyle who was really in deep thought and skeptical. “You good?”

“Yeah, I know. Dani tells me everything. Why didn’t she tell me about her?” He thought out loud. “Whatever, probs not a big deal. I'm keen to get plastered.”

“PARTY!” Gisela yelled out loud. She was met with a raucous of cheers and ‘Wooos’

“Alright!”

CHAPTER 57:

===================

Year 2000:

“Oh Hawaii was really relaxing,” Daniela said while leaning against her boyfriend. He was giving her a nice shoulder massage which she loved immensely. “I really wish you were there. It was so annoying. There were these sleazy guys hitting on me.” She was wearing a brown turtleneck jumper and black pants.

“Yeah, well I’m proud of you. Not because you avoided those guys but you actually went snorkeling. That’s awesome,” Kyle said as he massaged her shoulders. “So what else did you guys do?”

“Not much. Went hiking a lot but guess who I saw?”

“Oh this should be good.” He smiled as Daniela scooted on her bed closer to her boyfriend. “Who did you see?”

“Do you remember Joel’s girlfriend?”

“Chloe? It wasn’t my fault…” He laid down on her bed looking up at the ceiling until she peered over him. “I just kissed her once.”

“You kissed Chloe?”

“Pre-Courtney....She wanted to make Joel jealous or something by enlisting me to kiss her,” Kyle yawned. “The whole thing was so stupid. Was it her?”

“Silvia, not Chloe,” She jumped off her bed and to her bookshelf. She ran her finger on several spines before picking out a book. “They hit it off so much. It’s like they never missed a beat.”

Kyle looked at the book that Daniela picked out. “Really? The high school yearbook from 1997? Why?” He looked at her with amusement. “Man, I wonder what Gavin and Janet are doing?”

“Are they still in the state?” She asked as she opened the book and flicked through the pages. “Or moved to like Harvard or some bullshit.”

“Woah...” He saw an old picture of himself. “I looked like such a geek. I mean look at me.” He pointed at his picture.

“You know you should get a tattoo or something,” She joked. “Oh come on that was 3 years ago basically and you’re so buff and strong now.”

“Not really.” He scoffed as Daniela ran her hand on his right bicep. “What are you doing?”

“Trust me, hun,” She moved her hand to his pecs. “You are completely different from that geeky kid. Hey if things didn’t happen the way they did then we wouldn’t be here and we wouldn’t be dating.”

“That’s true.”

Daniela laughed. “We’ve grown up since then. What was up with hair?” She peered deeper into the yearbook. “Light brown.”

“I like it darker. It looks better on you,” He compliment as he looked at his dark brown hair through Daniela’s mirror. “Anyway I saw some girl that knew you. Jasmine or whatever…”

“Jasmine?” Daniela slammed her yearbook shut. “Where did you meet her?”

“Hong Kong.”

“Kyle, I don’t really ask much from you but stay away from her. She’s bad news,” Daniela frowned in sadness. “Really bad news.”

“What happened?” He asked her out of concern. “What’s wrong?”

She sighed when she snuggled close to him. “It’s nothing. Just trust me. When do you leave?” She kneeled down over him.

“Hmmm….” Kyle looked at his watch. “Around 8pm. Man, I can’t believe you’re coming with me to Gavin’s dinner party. It’s like formal, so remember that.”

“So….” Daniela moved closer and closer. “What do we do to pass the time…?” She flirtatiously asked.

“Well…” He looked at his watch again. “I'm open to suggestions....”

“So am I..."

------------------------------------

15 minutes later:

Joel was at his parents’ home as he ran upstairs. He wore a college sweatshirt and pants. “Yo Dani!” He knocked on her door. “Family meeting….”

“Busy…” She responded in between her bed making squeaking noises.

“Is Thorpe there?”

“….Nope....” She answered slowly.

“Are you kidding me?” He sighed as he lent against her door. “You guys are like god damn rabbits."

Daniela walked out wearing a robe. “Oh come on, not like you’re not sleeping with someone. Sneaking off at night and stuff.”

“Hey Thorpe.” Joel waved to Kyle who walked out of the room wearing a white-t shirt and jeans.

“Hey.” He kissed Daniela on the forehead. “I’ll see you later.” He walked downstairs towards the back and exited through their backyard.

“Alright, let me get changed.”

“Look Dani, there’s nothing happening with me.” He moved his hand to the door.

Daniela rolled her eyes. “Joel, your lip quivers when you lie. Now shoo, gotta get changed.”

Daniela got changed in about 2 minutes. “So what’s the big news?” Daniela asked as she sat down at the kitchen next to her cousin on a brown high wooden kitchen stool. She was dressed in a white top and jeans, keeping it simple. Her aunt and uncle looked at her and looked at each other. “You guys aren’t expecting?”

“No,” Sean looked at her. “No?” He looked at his wife who shook her head. “No.”

“Then what?” Joel looked at his parents. “We’re selling the house?”

“Well….” Bette looked at her husband. “Your father got a job offer in New York, and we thought about it. We decided if I could get a job there as well, we would move.”

“So…?”

“I got a job there as well, so we are moving to New York and selling the house. Joel already lives away and Dani, you spend a lot of time in your sorority house.” Bette knew that it would anger Daniela.

“When do you move?” Joel asked.

“Once we get a few bids in but about 3 weeks.”

“3 weeks!” Joel and Daniela exclaimed in unison.

“Are you kidding me?” The teenage woman looked her adoptive aunt and uncle. “And you decided to tell us now? Where am I supposed to live?” She yelled with her arms flailing about. “Or did you guys not think about that?”

“Daniela! I will not be talked to like that! Now apologize, young lady.” Bette stamped her authority.

“Sorry…” The teen grumbled. “What am I supposed to do?”

“Daniela, we will pay for your rent,” Sean reassured her. “Joel and Chris have an extra room, just stay with them. You basically live there anyway.”

“It doesn’t matter. You guys never told me anything.” She raised her voice. “And you expect me to change whatever I’m doing to accommodate. It’s just unfair. Whatever…” Daniela got up and stormed out of the kitchen to her room.

“She took that well…” Joel smiled. “Anyway I’ll see you guys later. Have some politico stuff to deal with.” He tapped the kitchen table with his first twice before getting up and leaving.

Bette looked at Sean. “I’ll go talk to her.” She went upstairs as knocked on Daniela’s bedroom door. “Dani?”

“What? I’m busy.” She stared through her door.

“Daniela Cooper, you will open this door at this moment.” Bette raised her voice

“Lame…” Daniela opened the door. “What? I need to get ready.”

“Daniela, we are sorry that we didn’t tell you earlier. We didn’t want to bring false hope to both Joel and yourself. We should have told you earlier and we apologize for that,” Bette sat down on Daniela’s bed looking at all the clothes all over the place. “This is a great opportunity for your uncle and I.”

“I’m not upset at you guys, I’m just annoyed at the situation.” Daniela sighed as she went through her closet trying to find the right dress. “And I don’t know it feels like you guys are abandoning me.”

“Oh Dani….” Bette sighed. “We would never do that to you. You’re like our daughter. Why don’t you come with us? We can get you into a great school.”

“Really? In New York?” Daniela was flabbergasted. “Umm….I don’t know.”

“You can live with Joel and Chris until the year finishes then join us in New York until you find your own place. What do you think?”

“I don’t know….” She sat down on her bed wearing a lovely mid length pink asymmetric dress with ruffles at the front with her hair tied up in a bun with her bangs showing off. “I don’t think I could do that. Joel and Chris are here and with Gisela here, it gives Kyle a reason to come back. I’m settled her, I’m in a sorority. Thanks for the offer but my place is here.” She smiled as she hugged Bette. “You guys will always be my family. You let me live under your roof and I can never forget it.” She stood up. “How do I look?” She turned around.

“You look great and we are very proud of you. Remember…” Bette realized that the shoulder was a little lopsided. She got up and while fixing it up “You’re like a daughter to us. Now you go have fun with your boyfriend.”

Santa Monica:

“You did what?” Gisela with her blonde hair all over the place sat down with a cup of coffee, stared at her best friend in disbelief. She wore a pink bed robe over her nightgown. “Like seriously?” as she slouched on her couch.

“I know and I feel bad…” Courtney sighed as she slouched on her couch. “Carl wasn’t around.” The red hair teen was sitting more upright on a chair as she twiddled her thumbs.

“Court…” Gisela took a sip of her coffee and chuckled. “Like it was just a New Years kiss. Everyone does in the USA. Totally should relax.”

“But you don’t understand…” She sulked. “It felt nice like I haven’t been kissed like that since I dated your brother.”

“TMI, Court…”

“It’s nice and Carl doesn’t kiss like that.”

“Well,” Gisela took a deep breath. “Chris is a great kisser. Totally know it. So it’s like no big deal unless it is like something more.” The blonde woman looked at her best friend looking down. “You like him?”

“He’s really nice to me…”

“Court, just because like a guy is nice to you…” She coughed. “Doesn’t mean like you have to fall for him. What the hell is like wrong with you? But Chris is a great guy. You can so do a lot worse.”

“I don’t know…” Courtney beamed when she had an idea. “Does he like me?”

“Courtney…” Gisela got up and went straight to the kitchen with her empty mug. “This is something you like have to talk to him about. I was in Sydney for New Years and I met this Australian dreamboat. He was so hot!” She looked up at the ceiling like in a day dream. “He had a tanned body, ripping biceps and his accent was so dreamy and he had sandy blonde hair and blue eyes and….”

“Ella? Ella?” Courtney waved her hand in front of her best friend who was staring into space. “Hello?”

“So hot and the sex.”

“Did you sleep with him?” Courtney sighed. “Why?”

“He was hot and it was so romantic. Not like any of us haven’t done it. Chris and Alicia, Joel and that Lana girl, Dani and so many guys, Tony and a few girls, and Kyle and like that supermodel. Like chillax, Court.” Gisela smirked. “Anyway I’m going home for dinner, so you have fun talking to like Chris about your smoochy smooch.”

“Grrr…” Courtney grumbled as she picked up the phone. “Chris? Hi!” Courtney nodded slowly. “It’s Courtney. Yes, Courtney. Who’s Daisy? Whatever…what are you doing? Ah huh…okay Joel is out and Dani went to some lameo party….wanna grab a bite to eat? Gisela is going to her parents’ house. Okay? I'll see you soon. Bye!”

-------------------------------

College:

Joel was walking through campus. It was pretty empty since most people hadn’t start classes. He walked towards one of the sorority halls. “Joel Harris!”

Joel turned around and looked around towards the palm trees that occupied an area. “Tina, Tina, Tina…” Joel chuckled awkwardly as a woman with black hair ran up to him. She wore a polo top and a pencil skirt. Her name? Tina Baines. She had brown eyes, silky long black hair and was pretty thin and short. “What do you want?” He asked as he walked.

“Nothing.” She smiled standing right to next to him as they walked.

“Nothing?” He raised an eyebrow. “Last time we talked, you did a massive tabloid piece on Hannah and I to try and ruin my rep. Tell me why I should believe you.”

“Hey, not my fault you’re naive.” She laughed.

Joel sighed “Well, you can go Lois Lane elsewhere. I have some stuff to do.”

“On a weekend?” She giggled. “What’s so important, politico? Even that piece didn’t do anything. People love you, you’re like Clark Kent. It’s kind of boring.”

“Yeah well, I’m just a simple person. Now this has been fun and stuff, Tina but I have things to do.” They reached a point near all the frats and sororities.

Tina noticed that and looked around. “Around the frats? You know I know people that don’t like frats. Could do damage to your political career.”

“Yeah, see Tina. That’s just your make believe world. I’m just seeing the issues here, now I’ll see you later.” Joel took a left to a road that led to a few classrooms. He looked around to see if Tina was around. “Thank god.” He sighed before thinking that she probably had better things to do. The brunette teen knocked on a door to one of the sorority houses.

“Hey,” Katherine smiled. “Why are you looking around?”

“That Tina reporter was following me around not too long ago.” Joel looked around. “I don’t know. I feel like we’re playing with fire.”

“That’s what makes it exciting. Have you told anyone?” Katherine asked.

“Not even Dani,” He shook his head as they walked to special staircase under the stairs. “She wouldn’t care actually. She would understand but she likes you.”

“Yeah, you’re my sister’s ex boyfriend,” Katherine ripped his clothes as she put her hands on his cheeks. “It’s weird, wrong but so hot.”

“Yeah…” Joel kissed her as he started to remove her top revealing a pink bra. He lifted her left knee as she was basically sitting on his knee. “It’s so hot.”

“Gotcha.” Tina smiled as she held a camera. “Freshmen aspiring politico has affair with sorority princess. This is going to sell…unless.”

Los Angeles:

Chris waited at the mall’s food court looking and waiting for Courtney. He looked at his watch. “Where the hell is she?” He muttered to himself. The only think he could hear was Matchbox 20 being played over the loud mall radio. There were children, their parents and shoppers walking, talking, sitting and eating around. He could smell Chinese, Thai, burgers, pizzas and fried chicken.

Chris was so hypnotized by the aromas that he didn’t noticed that Courtney just arrived and sat in front of him. “Hey.”

“Huh…” It took a few seconds before Chris came back to earth. “Hey, so what’s up?” He knew Courtney well enough that there was something like a hidden agenda.

“Nothing.” She lied.

“Ah huh…” Chris nodded slowly. “What’s this about?”

“Our kiss…” Courtney blushed as she looked down at her heels. “It’s just…”

Chris chuckled “It was just a NYE kiss, Court. There was nothing.”

“I don’t think so,” She sighed. “It felt nice. I haven’t had a kiss like that since Kyle. I know we’ve been spending a lot of time together and it’s just ummm…” She tried to find the words by looking around all the stores around her peripheral vision. “Don’t lie to me and tell me that the kiss meant nothing to you.”

“Courtney,” Chris smiled. “It doesn’t matter because you’re dating that Carl dude. You’re my bro’s ex-girlfriend. Even if I had the hots for you….” One thing never failed and that was Chris’ eyes starting at Courtney’s chest. “It won’t work. I love sex and you don’t. I play sport, you hate it. It wouldn’t work.”

“But…”

“You have a boyfriend and I just came back from sleeping with a girl from one of the political parties. Total babe and so good in the sack….” He nodded slowly with a wide cheesy grin on his face. “Anyway it wouldn’t work. So what are we going to do about food?”

Courtney groaned. She realized that all time she spent with Chris including that New Years’ kiss led to one thing. She was head over heels for him. She loved his humor, his cheesy smile, his looks, how easy it was for her to be around him and everything in between. “Chris!” She grabbed him and immediately planted one on his lips.

He looked shock as he felt her lips against his. He had to give her props, she was bold and she was a great kisser. She broke the kiss with a bewildered Chris looking at her with the words “errrr…..” coming out of his mouth.

“I’ll see you later.” She smiled.

Chris smiled awkwardly. He was embarrassed realizing that several people bear witness to their kiss. “Man…” He thought to himself. “She is sweet, nice, cheerful, bubbly, great kisser, and she has nice boobs….ahh crap….am I falling for her? Dundee is gonna kill me….”

--------------------

Later that Night:

“This is going to be weird…” Kyle whispered to Daniela as they walked into Gavin’s house. “I haven’t seen the guy in over a year or even talked to him. Last time I had any contact with him…” He sighed “Courtney and I were dating.”

“It’s going to be fine…” Daniela wearing her pink asymmetric dress, tried to reassure her boyfriend. She squeezed his hand tightly to show support. She looked at his suit. “Love the suit.” He wore a black suit with a white collared shirt without any tie. “Relax…” She felt his hand squeezing hers even tighter. “Everything will be fine.”

They walked in. It was pretty fancy for a party in a house. It was like a party for grown-ups that were married and had children. There were these little hors d'oeuvres on a table spread draped over with a lovely white table cover. Jazz music echoed and there were several people mingling with each other. “I think we’re overdressed for this…” Daniela muttered as she saw all the people wearing very plain formal outfits. She held her clutch close to her chest looking very insecure.

“No kidding…” Kyle agreed as he looked around. “Can’t believe I used to hang around these people…” He saw a girl with shocking blue hair wearing a very plain dress. “I think that’s Janet. Hopefully she doesn’t see us…”

“Kyle?”

“Too late…” Daniela whispered.

“Kyle Thorpe, it’s nice to see you.” She smiled before realizing that Daniela was next to him. “And Daniela Harris, right?” If anything she gave the evil eye to the brunette teen.

“Daniela Cooper actually…” She corrected with a little awkward smile.

“So….” Janet with her lack of social skills drifted away back to people she was more familiar with.

“That was bad…” Kyle sighed as they sat down on a plush red couch.

“I think she gave me the evil eye…” Daniela turned around looking at Janet which sadly for the couple led Janet back to them. “Hi…Janet.”

“Kyle, what happened to Courtney? She was a nice girl” She froze out the brunette woman.

“Well actually…” Kyle laughed nervously. “Courtney and I broke up about a year ago. Then…”

“Kyle and I are dating.” Daniela blurted out purposely with a glare towards Janet. “Isn't he hot?” She knew back in high school Janet had a thing for him.

“Is this true? You are just like a jock. One of those jocks that care about shallow girls that only care about their appearance and not about the soul of a person,” Janet started to ramble. “This is the reason why we have so many stupid people, suicides, teen pregnancies…”

“Janet…” Kyle looked at her.

“Yes?”

“Don't care” He sighed. “Dani and I have been dating for a year.”

“Why would you date someone like her…?”

“You know I’m right here…” Daniela looked at her and waved.

“Whatever…” Janet glared at the woman. "I thought you were this kind, understanding guy but I guess popularity corrupted you. Goodbye Kyle Thorpe."

“Well….that was fun…” Kyle got up with Daniela. “God, can’t believe I was friends with her.”

“Hey,” Daniela put her arm around his. “You’re hot, she’s not. Let her be jealous.”

“It’s like a female Carl or Carl is a male Janet….”

Suddenly the pair ran into the birthday boy. “Kyle? You made it!” Gavin smiled. He had very short blonde hair and was wearing a cheap suit. “And this is your date….” He looked at Daniela, mainly staring at his cleavage. “Aren’t you…Daniela from school? Far out!”

“Ummm…yeah” Daniela smiled awkwardly. “Happy Birthday.” She gave him a gift. “It’s a Pokemon toy thingy.”

“Yeah, it’s a Dragonair.” Kyle remarked. “So how’s you’ve been?”

“Not as much as you. So you guys are dating?” He looked at the couple. “Far out! That’s cooler than LOZ MM.”

“What?” A clueless Daniela whispered to her boyfriend

“Legend of Zelda, Majora’s Mask.” He whispered back.

“How did…”

“It’s a geek thing…” He turned his attention back to Gavin. “So yeah what you’ve been doing with your life?”

“I study engineering at Loyola. How about you guys?” Gavin looked starstrucked. Daniela was this popular girl that dated the ‘hottest’ guys and Kyle was now a tall, more attractive male, a far cry from when they first met.

“Umm…” Daniela looked at Kyle. “I study architecture at UCLA and…we’ve been dating for a year?” Kyle nodded. “A year.”

“Sport scholarship at Madison, Wisconsin.”

“Far out, you traveled that far just for my birthday?” Gavin looked so happy when in fact Kyle was in the area because of Daniela. “That’s awesome!”

“Errr….yeah totally man, I wouldn’t miss it.” He was lucky that his mother didn’t throw out the invitation. “You should mingle with your other guests.” He said to Gavin.

“Oh yeah. I’ll see you guys soon.”

Kyle watched as Gavin left. “Guy hasn’t changed…” He chuckled to himself. "Good guy though."

“But you have…” Daniela smiled. “Soo….sex in the Porsche.”

Kyle chuckled and looked at her. “Tempting but you know….” He put his arm over her neck and gave her a peck on the forehead. “After dinner…” He gazed up and down.

“Oh I love a little desert.” Daniela whispered seductively as she rested her head on his shoulder.

College:

Joel walked into the campus café after his rendezvous with Katherine. “Hi Joel!” Tina smiled as she stood next to him with a smile on her dial.

“What do you want Tina?” Joel on the other hand didn’t have the time or the place for her.

“I need help fixing my camera and you’re a smart guy. Can you help me?” She asked. She knew from sources that Joel couldn’t resist helping someone in need.

“Fine…” He walked with her to a plastic table. “Let’s see…” He held the camera as he went through a photo. His eyes suddenly grew wide. “What the hell!” He looked at Tina. “That’s…”

“You and a sorority princess going at it,” Tina smirked. “Just the evidence I have to ruin you and ruin the democrats. I can’t believe you and Katherine Russell are sleeping together.”

Joel was angry. He was tricked and now both he and Kat were screwed but he had one question. “Why are you showing me this?” He figured Tina would go straight to the press.

“Because I like you Joel.” She smiled as she looked into his baby blue eyes.

"No, you don’t…”

“Yeah, you’re right,” Tina nodded. “I don’t but you are exactly someone who my mother would love. My mother says I need to bring a date to my aunt’s 50th and I don’t have a boyfriend.”

“Shock of shocks…” Joel muttered under his breath.

“I need a date, so….”

“If I’m your date then you won’t release the pictures?” Joel sighed. “How do I know that I can trust you?”

“Think about it this way, you have no choice.” She smirked. “Think about it, Harris. Call me on this number.” She threw him a business card.

“Ahhh shit…I think I need Daniela’s help…”

----------------------

Los Angeles:

Outside Gavin’s house, it was pretty quiet except for one place. “How many times have we had sex in the Porsche and the Ferrari?” Daniela beamed as she ran her fingers down his chest. She was wearing his collared shirt over her underwear.

“I lost count….” He looked up at her light blue eyes. He suddenly heard her phone ring. “Hello!” Kyle answered. “Oh hey Joel, yeah she’s here.” He tossed her the phone.

“Hey Joel….ah huh…ah huh…you did what? Oh my god. You have to go for it but what the hell is wrong with you? She’s your ex-girlfriend’s older sister, she’s my sorority sister….I’m impressed. Just have to do it, Joel. Okay bye….” Daniela was dumbfounded whilst on her phone. “And no we are not. We are at a party.” She hung up the phone.

“What’s that about?” He asked her.

Daniela threw her phone onto the driver’s seat. “Joel’s been sleeping with Kat.”

“The sorority….” Kyle looked at her with a stern gaze. “They were circling each other during Christmas. Not surprised.”

“She’s Hannah’s older sister and some newspaper chick took a picture of him and Kat having sex and she wants him to take her on a date otherwise she’ll release them.” Daniela explained.

Kyle couldn’t believe it. It sounded like something out of soap. “What a whacko.”

“Like Janet?” Daniela smiled as she rested her head on Kyle’s chest as he stroked her hair. “She really liked you.”

“Yeah,” Kyle shivered. “I’m glad you’ll never been in that situation…” He smiled feeling absolutely proud of Daniela as he stroked her hair. “You’ll never let yourself get into something like that.”

“Yeah…” She looked guiltily away from Kyle. It warmed her heart that he thought the best of her and she wanted to show him that but there was a looming shadow.

I figured there was worse things than reading this but there aren't really. This is pretty bad.

CHAPTER 58

==================

Los Angeles:

“This is not good…” Katherine was pacing around her room. “You’re saying the photos are real.”

“They are…” Joel leaned against her black computer chair. “So I've never been blackmailed. I had to ask for advice”

“Who did you ask?” Katherine looked at him. “Joel, you can’t tell anyone about us at all. Now this is going to blow up in our faces and those girls will never look me in the eye.”

"What difference does it make?” He asked. “It’s finals. You’re done after this. It’s nothing illegal.” He explained after he thought about it. "Is it?"

Kat sighed as she sat down on her bed. “It doesn’t work like that,” She laid down on her bed picking up a baseball and throwing and catching it. “The sorority will be tarnished.”

“I don’t know, Daniela said…..”

“You told Daniela about us?” Katherine glared at Joel. “Whatever, I hope she can keep a secret otherwise we are both screwed. What we were we thinking, we shouldn’t have done this?” She groaned as she continued to throw the baseball up and down. “It’s like I’m a teacher and you’re a student or I’m married and I’m having an affair….We have to do something…”

“Well she said that I have to take the bait and go with Tina to her dinner.” He sat next to a lying down Katherine.

“Just don’t sleep with her.”

“Come on, Kat,” Joel chuckled. “Like I would do thing like that to you? She’s not half as beautiful as you.”

“Flattery, flattery, flattery,” Katherine smiled. “I love it…” She smiled as she and Joel looked at each. “So when’s dinner?”

"Around 8." He shrugged.

"That's pretty late. So what can we do to pass time?" Kat coyly remarked as she patted her bed.

"Well, I do have this idea...."

---------------------------------

Daniela was walking to the library to study for finals when she heard a voice that sent chills down her spine. “Dani, Dani, Dani….” The brunette teenager turned around only to see her former friend cum enemy, Jasmine. “Thank you for your help. You are such a great tutor."

“Yeah, yeah, yeah…” Daniela pulled out a floppy disk. “Everything that you need is there.”

“Why thank you Dani. You are such a good friend,” Jasmine smiled evilly. “I’m so happy and glad that we are friends.”

“Hand over the tape.” Daniela ordered with her hands on her hips. She was wearing a white blouse with ruffled sleeves and blue jeans. “You said if I helped you.”

“Oh Dani,” Jasmine laughed. “It’s just before finals. I need you to get me the answers. It’s not that hard, I just need your help.”

“You want me to cheat for you?” Daniela glared at her. “I don’t cheat.”

“Except on guys,” She corrected her. “I know your history. Think about it this way, Dani. Either you cheat or you lose your boyfriend.”

“I’m not going to do it.” Daniela stamped her authority. “I’m not going to cheat for you especially because I’ll get thrown out and no university will accept me. My future will be ruined.”

“If we get caught, Dani,” Jasmine smiled. “What choice do you have?”

“What choice do I have?” She asked rhetorical. “I’m going to say no. I’m going to take my chances. Go, I dare you to fly all the way to tell my boyfriend what he probably already knows. So bye bye Jazzy.” Daniela smirked smugly as she walked away from Jasmine.

“You can’t do this, Dani…” Jasmine yelled after her. “You can’t. Don’t do this to me. I’ll fail.”

“Well, you should have thought about that before you bribed me, bitch.” Daniela sneered at her. “Have fun at summer school and never talk to me again.”

“You’ll pay for this Daniela Harris.”

“Daniela Cooper. Remember the name, bitch." The brunette walked towards the library.

"Oh, you'll pay Cooper."

------------------------------

Santa Monica:

Courtney was fiddling with her pencil as she sat in the living room of her house in Santa Monica. She was tapping away thinking about Chris. “I should call him, right?” She asked the blonde teenager in front of her.

“For like the last time….” Gisela slammed her book. “I don’t care. Just talk to him. I am totally sick of this drama. It’s so like Kyle all over again.”

“Fine, I’ll call him but only after my date with Carl.” She sighed as she went back to her studying. “Why is this so hard?”

“Oh like I’m sorry…” Gisela glared at her. “I didn’t realize having two guys like after you is totally a drag. Like why do you have a date with Carl like during finals?” She had several books on chemistry and biology in front of her. Her notebook was scribbled with words, diagrams and graphs. Not only that but there were several textbooks, pens, pencils and highlighters on her table, all over the place. “Study, Court. Study.”

“Easy for you to say,” She exclaimed as she shut her teaching book shut. “You’re smart and so is everybody. I get it, I’m not smart.”

“Courtney…”

“No, you’re right. I’m not smart enough for anyone except Carl. He makes me feel smart. He thinks I’m smart, intelligent and he cares for me.”

“The guy is a weirdo. What about Chris?” Gisela was now officially distracted. “He totally cares for you and treats you like a normal person. He’s nice to be around.”

“But Chris is your ex-boyfriend,” She tried to find an excuse. “And he sleeps around.”

“Like we broke up 4 years ago, that’s totally ancient history,” The blonde teenager explained. “And like he doesn’t when he’s in a relationship. He’s a sweet, caring guy. Give him a chance.”

“And what about you?” Courtney smiled changing the focus from herself to her roommate. “How come you don’t have any guy in your life?”

“Because…” Gisela smiled. “I’m too busy studying which is totally something you should be like doing.” She heard their phone ring. "Gisela speaking. Ah huh...ja ja ja....ja, sounds good." She hung up the phone and walked back to the couch.

"Who was that?" The red haired teen inquired.

“Joel, Chris and Dani are at a café. You interested?”

“Sure, I need a break from studying before my date with Carl.”

“Eugh…” Gisela rolled her eyes as she threw her pen onto her books. “Whatever…”

-------------------------------------

Wilshire, LA:

The quintet was at a small café sitting down and talking. “So I have this political dinner thing tonight,” Joel remarked as he looked down at his cup of coffee. “Man, why are doing this friends thing in a coffee place. Couldn’t we go to somewhere better?”

“Well there’s a mall,” Chris pointed out “And a diner. There aren’t many hang out places until we turn 21 or we have better fake IDs…”

“Hey, the coffee is good.” Courtney smiled as she smiled at Gisela. The blonde teen rolled her eyes as she was drinking a nice cup of green tea. “Why are you drinking tea?”

“It helps me focus on studying,” Gisela muttered. “Maybe you should try some….”

“All the green tea in the world wouldn’t help her…” Daniela remarked as she looked at her watch. “And I have to study as well. Can’t believe I have to do math. Eugh it is worse than listening to Ricky Martin.”

“I like him…” Courtney pointed out with a smile.

“Figures…” Daniela stared at her coldly. “I should have gotten a tutor…” She slammed her head softly against the wooden table. “Worst…”

“Maybe someone like a cute college guy?” Gisela smiled as she poked Daniela with a sugar sachet. “Teaching like the ways of screwing him.”

“Shut it Blondie….”

“Anyway what’s the political gala?” Courtney asked Joel who was about to walk up to get something to eat. “Is it like super fancy like in those TV shows?”

“With finals? I doubt it.” Joel explained. “It’s just a quick dinner and bingo bango I am out of there. You guys want anything?”

“I’ll pass.” Daniela remarked with her head face first on the table. Gisela and Courtney shook their heads.

“Alright, so you want a muffin?” He looked at Chris who smiled. “Of course you do…” He groaned as he walked to the counter.

“How come Joel isn’t seeing someone?” Courtney asked as she watched Joel at the counter. “He seems happy but.....”

“He’s totally seeing someone,” Gisela smiled. Everyone but Daniela looked at her with shock and amazement. “What? It’s totally obvious. Right Easy Way?”

“Daniela is having a crisis.” The brunette woman mumbled in response even letting that insult fly by. “I feel like Daria.” The Daria theme song played in her head. “The world sucks.”

“Oookayyy then….” Gisela looked away. “It’s obvious like he’s totally dating someone. Like you haven’t noticed anything?” She looked at Chris. Chris on the other hand was staring at Courtney and vice versa. “Eugh…”

Joel was waiting at the counter for a muffin and a coffee when he heard a voice calling out his name. “Joel?” He sighed after hearing his name and by reflex he turned around. He didn’t recognize the voice until…

“Chloe?”

Chloe Stewart, the Canadian teenager who happened to be his ex-girlfriend. She had short dark brown hair styled in a chignon, matching her green eyes. “Ummm yeah?” Chloe scoffed. She had a travel bag on her right shoulder as she wore a black seamless tube top.

“What are you doing here?” He asked her. He was entranced by her until he realized that there was a guy at the counter. “Oh sorry…umm just a normal coffee, two sugars and a blueberry muffin thanks.”

“That will be $7.” The guy at the counter said as he opened up the cash register.

“Ummm yeah sure…” He paid and waited for his coffee.

“Can I have an espresso please?” Chloe smiled. “Joely, Joely, Joely, it’s been a long time. You still look nice. I kind of missed you except for the sex.”

“We never slept together.” Joel looked at her confused why she would bring up sex early in a conversation.

Chloe rolled her eyes and smiled sarcastically. “I know, that’s what sucked.”

“Latte and blueberry muffin for the man and espresso for the lady.”

“So what are you doing here?” Joel asked her. “You’re still a high school senior right?”

“Officially? To see UCLA, Berkeley and Stanford but unofficially it’s a vacation,” Chloe smirked at him while holding her espresso to go. “You still hang out with your little group. That's cute.” She smiled while bobbling her head.

“Yeah they are right here. You’re gonna come?” He asked her.

“Like I have anything better to do,” Chloe was a firecracker, a strange one. “Oh wait I have to fly back home in a few hours but sure.”

Joel and Chloe walked to his table. “Guys, you remember….”

“Chloe?” Gisela looked shocked when they saw the Canadian right in front of them. “Seriously?”

“What?” Daniela looked up, turned around and looked at Chloe. “Hey Chloe..." She slammed her head back on the table making all the cups and holders bounce up. “Ow…”

“Hey you guys? Don't tell me you guys like all go the same university like those TV shows?” She asked the group. "That's pretty tacky."

“Oh Gisela, Joel and Dani go to UCLA, me and Chris go to USC. Joel, Gisela are on academic scholarships and Chris is on a sports scholarship.” Courtney explained.

Chloe looked around. She realized “Where’s the black guy, the Australian guy and the smart chick?” She remembered Alicia, Tony and Kyle. “Weren’t you in love with him?” She asked Courtney who sighed. “Okay details, people.”

Gisela sighed “Kyle and Alicia are at Madison and Tony is in Pittsburgh.”

“Madison? Like Madison, Wisconsin?” Chloe quibbled her bottom lip. “Well…” She smiled to herself. “Things just got interesting.” She said softly to herself still holding her espresso. “So they’re dating?”

“No…” Daniela put her hand up with her face still on the table. “He’s my boyfriend.”

“Wait, so you two are….huh...wouldn't see that coming,” Chloe smiled politely. “Well, I have a plane to catch to go home. I’ll see you guys sometime.”

“Wait!” Joel walked up to Chloe. “What happened to us?”

Chloe chuckled “I moved, we broke up. Oh about us now?” Chloe asked as Joel nodded. “Nothing, you’re cute but you’re Joel. Bye!” The Canadian left the café leaving a dumbfounded male in her wake.

“So in good news…” Joel sat back down. “Chloe is completely over me….like I meant nothing to her.”

“I like her but she's really weird,” Daniela got up. “I’m going to study before I get run over by math. At least half roadkill is better than I can imagine.” The brunette teen got up and left while mumbling incoherently to herself.

“Easy Way is totally right,” Gisela got up. “I have to totally hit the books.” She left as well.

"Shut it Kaiser Bitch."

“Well…I got that political party crap…” Joel looked at his watch. “See you guys.” This left Courtney and Chris alone. There was awkward silence between the pair.

“So…” until Courtney broke it. “Look, Gisela has been annoying be about this….I have a boyfriend.”

“Okay?” Chris nodded slowly. “I don’t but I might hold auditions for one.” He went back to his blueberry muffin.

“Chris…” She put her hand on top of his. “I….I don’t know…” She rubbed her hand.

“What do you want Courtney?” He was annoyed by her mixed messages. “I like you okay but we can’t do anything because we’re friends and you have a boyfriend. You dated Dundee who is really close to me and he's long moved on. So god dammit, Courtney. Stop it. Stop confusing yourself and me. I’m sick of it.” He got up and took his muffin. “I’ll see you later.” He walked out in frustration.

Courtney sulked and looked at her reflection through a tiny little teaspoon. “What do I do?”

"Pick the hot guy!" A waitress said to her.

"It's not like that."

"Oh..." The waitress awkwardly muttered. "So....you guys done with those cups?" She pointed at the couple of coffee cups and plates on their table.

"Yeah...."

Later:

“You didn’t tell me this was a wedding. You said this was a political gala,” Joel sighed looking at his tuxedo through a metal table spoon. He looked around at the big banquet hall with circular tables draped in lovely white satin sheets. Each table had several chairs and with each chair, right in front were 3 white plates, 2 forks, 2 knives and a table spoon. There were pepper and salt shakers made out of marble with a lovely rose centerpiece right in the middle of the table. Each table had a jug of water and a glass to each person.

“I told you.” Tina wearing a simple yet chic night blue gown stated. Her black hair was tied up in a bun.

“You said wear a tuxedo.” Joel replied back.

“Okay, so I lied but you wouldn't have come if I said it was a wedding.”

“That's a lie,” He glared at her as he picked up a glass of water. Tina stared at him.“What? Alright fine. This place is pretty swanky.”

“My mother wants me to have a date in a place where you were a tuxedo. Blame my mother,” The reporter rebutted. “You are so thick. You honestly didn’t think I would follow you doing your deed with the sorority princess.”

“Aren’t you a regular Lois Lane…” He muttered. “So I have to meet your mother right?”

“Sadly…” Tina sighed. “She’s on this kick about why I haven’t met a guy in college. I’m too busy for that crap. I’m a sophomore about to be a junior. As you can imagine I don’t get many guys flocking to me..”

“Imagine that….” He muttered to himself as he sculled a glass of water. “Alright let’s get this done with. Dance a little dance, meet your mother.”

“Speak of the devil…” Tina sighed as her mother wearing a green dress ran up to her.

“Tina darling!”

“Hi mother…” Tina got up. “It’s nice to see you…” She frowned.

“And you brought a date. I was beginning to think you were a lesbian. He’s so cute.” She pinched Joel’s cheeks.

“Mother!” Tina exclaimed. “I’m really sorry but she gets excited.”

“Hi, I’m Joel Harris. I can see where Tina gets her good looks.” He said charming her with his trademark smile. “It’s a killer smile.” He whispered to Tina.

“Apparently so.” Tina was surprised as she looked around.

“You two should go to get your picture taken with the bride and groom…” Her mother was a bit too excited.

“Mother, I don’t think….”

“Oh nonsense!” Her mother shushed her. “Megan! Look what Tina brought with her. It's a boy!” She dragged Tina with her.

"Sometimes I do wish I was gay. My mother would stop harassing me."

Elsewhere:

“What’s wrong?” Carl looked at Courtney as they sat at an art museum. It was a quiet museum except for the large groups of tourists from Germany and Japan. “This artist?”

“Oh no, I love the colors and stuff.” She lied. The red haired teen had no clue about art. “I’m just tired.” That was another lie. In her mind she was thinking about Chris. “Studying.”

“See that’s what I like about you,” Carl held her hand. “You’re a smart, amazing woman. You’re always are on the continued quest of knowledge unlike those friends of yours.”

“What’s wrong with my friends?” Courtney asked as she held his hand. “They are smart.”

“Not as smart as you. You need to be around more intellectual people like me.” Carl loved to toot his own horn. “What do you think about this sculpture?”

“It’s nice…” She was too preoccupied. Carl was sweet to her, made her feel that she was this amazing intelligent woman but that wasn’t her. Chris treated her like herself; he didn’t make her feel like she was a lie. “I don’t know.”

--------------------------------

Wedding Hall:

“I’m sorry about my mother. She can get a bit crazy.” Tina explained as she sat down next to Joel. They were watching the bride and the groom having their first dance. “I love how the wedding and the reception are just one thing.”

“Yeah, it was a lot shorter than I’m used to.” Joel remarked. “Look Tina, it’s okay. It’s a nice vibe around here.”

“A deal is a deal.” She sighed. “I promise that I’ll destroy the pictures. You lived up to your end of your bargain but there’s one thing I want to know.”

“Off the record?” He replied while his foot was tapping away to the rhythm.

“Yes.” She didn’t. She didn’t really have a sense of humor. “Are you and that sorority head dating?”

“No, no…” He shook his head. “We’re not. We’re just sleeping together. Why?”

“Well…I can help your campaign…” Tina moved her foot towards his. “I know politics in the paper. I scratch your back if you scratch my back.”

“That wouldn’t be honest, Tina.”

Tina chuckled. “When are politics honest? We live in a country where the NRA pays off senators and where senators get special bribes and payoffs. It’s naive to think that these things don’t happen, so you can be preachy about being honest and moral but you have to think about the end result,” She explained to him as she placed her hand on top of his. “So think about it this way. I and the paper support your party’s campaign. No payoffs and stuff just one thing.”

“What is it?” He whispered.

“I want the same deal as the sorority head, Katherine Russell. You’re not cheating on her because you’re not dating and she’s leaving after finals, so what’s the big deal?”

“The big deal is that it is seedy.”

“Joel, it’s your choice. Do you want to further your career or want to be moralistic and honest? One will get you far and the other? Well you just have to think about it.” Tina got up. “Think about it.”

Joel sat there and pondering about everything that Tina said. “Hmmm….”

----------------------------------

Later:
Location: Santa Monica:

Courtney finished from her date with Carl, plonked herself on to a couch. She wasn’t in the mood to study. Gisela was in her room studying. The red haired teen went to the fridge. She yawned as she opened the freezer. The teenager pulled out a tub of chocolate ice cream and took out two scoops which she slid right into a blue plastic bowl.

She heard a knock on the door as she sat down. “Coming.” She placed her bowl on the kitchen table as she walked to the door. The red hair teen opened the door revealing a blonde male. “Chris?”

“Courtney, I thought about what you said and we have great chemistry, we are friends and we both like each other and…” He stood outside their house wearing a tight white t-shirt that showed off his muscles and a pair of chinos.

"And…”

“And this…” He moved closer to her and kissed her. She was only happy to oblige. She felt like she was in bliss, in heaven until she realized she had to make a choice. “So…” He licked his lips. “I’ll see you later.”

“Bye?” Courtney stood there stunned and perplexed as she slowly closed to the door. “Who am I going to pick. I can’t string both along…” She realized she just caused herself a dilemma.

-------------------------------

Outside the Wedding Hall:

“Oh Joel…” Tina moaned in the back seat of Joel’s Miata. She felt his soft lips caressing her neck. “Stop for a second.” She pushed away. “Are you sure about this?”

“You said it yourself…” Joel remarked as he pushed back his hair. “It’s naïve to think that I can get far just being moral and honest. I mean I’m sleeping with my cousin’s sorority head who’s my ex-girlfriend’s older sister. I kind of let my friend making out with another woman when he was dating a friend of mine, so let’s be honest. I’m as corrupt as everyone.”

“Are you okay with this?” Tina asked him as she slowly slid off her dress.

“Yeah, yeah I am. It’s just sex. I'm all clear and you're not going to get knocked up. You better live up to your bargain.” He said as he kicked a little electronic tape recorder on.

“Of course,” Tina agreed. “Just sex and I’ll play nice.”

“You know the car is bugged.” He smirked. “I’m learning…” He whispered into her ear.

“So if you get caught…”

“You’re going down with me…” He smirked with a slight nod.

“Well played. Now for you to live up to your bargain.” She wrapped her arms around his body.

Next Morning:
Location: Wisconsin, Milwaukee

Kyle and Will were out at the campus grounds kick a football (soccer ball) around. “I’m telling you, you should tell the university to fuck off, leave and go pro. You’re good to be here.”

Kyle laughed as he picked up the ball. “Nah man. I’m not ready mentally for that stuff yet. This is just something I feel is right for me.” They were walking back from the grounds until he felt someone covering his eyes.

“Guess who?”

“Errr….” He knew it was a woman because of her feminine voice but that's where it ended. “Will? Any help?”

“Have no idea, bro.” He looked at the girl. “She’s not my type.” He chuckled.

“Kyle Thorpe.” The woman ran right in front of him.

The shock and the surprise caused Kyle’s eyes to widen. “Chloe Stewart?”

“Ya,” She smiled. The guys noticed how wide her smile was. “My actually name is Marissa.”

“Really?”

“No,” She smiled right at Kyle. “So hey” She hugged him tightly. “How have you been? I'm really touched you remember me.”

“Well, it's not hard to forget you but I’ve been great,” Kyle nodded slowly still confused and surprised. He heard Will cough. “Oh right this is William, Will, Bill or whatever. He’s my roommate.”

“Nice to meet you, Chloe.”

“It’s nice to meet you too,” She smiled. “So…” She stared at him kind of hoping that he would leave.

“I’ll leave you two alone; I’ll be at the car.” Will took the cue. He knew the situation as he walked away from the pair.

“So I heard from a bunch of random people that you study here and shock of shocks they were right.” Chloe giggled. “So what are you doing tomorrow night?”

“Holidays, finished finals.” Kyle replied as he started to walk with her through campus, pass several flowers, trees, buildings and people. “So maybe chillaxing”

“No, you’re not.” She jumped in front of him. “You’re taking me to prom.”

“Ummm….no.” Kyle chuckled. "It ain't happening."

“Oh why not? It’ll be fun like a catch up or something,” Chloe swayed like a little schoolgirl with a heavy crush. “Look…” She sighed knowing that he wouldn’t budge. “I need a date. My last one fell sick. He tried to eat as much non-toxic Playdough and he ate too much. I guess non toxic is an advertising lie or his stomach didn’t like it. I dunno but I’m popular.” The teenager stated her case. “And a college guy will make me be like Prom Queen. I know you have a girlfriend.”

“How?” Kyle looked at her with a raised eyebrow. It was like she knew he would be here and dating Daniela Cooper. “How did you know that?”

“I was in LA this morning and I bumped into Joel and he was like Kyle’s in Madison and shock of shocks that’s where I live. What a coincidence!” She tried to persuade him by fluttering her eyelashes and gazing at him. “Please?”

“No.”

“Please? I promise it’ll be G rated. We dance, we laugh, I’m Prom Queen and we go home....unless you're into more than going into home.....nope?” She explained as she fluttered her eyebrows. “Oh come on, you’ll be like a celebrity.”

“Chloe…”

“Eugh what’s the problem? I told you,” She exclaimed. “We’ll dance, show off and go home. Please like I’ll waste my time in a school prom.”

Kyle sighed. He gave up “Fine…just let me get it by Dani, I want to make sure it’s okay.”

“Okay…call her now?” She stood right in front of him.

“Now? C’mon Chloe…”

“Oh come on like you would tell her anyway. If she finds out, she’ll get angry. So just be honest.”

“Whatever…” He hated the position he was in and he showed it. He picked up his phone and speed dialed his girlfriend’s number. “Hey.”

“Hey.”

“So guess who I bumped into today?”

“Ray Allen?”

“Huh…” Kyle started to day dream about meeting Ray Allen and the Bucks. “Huh…no, oh no.” That ended when he saw Chloe staring at him. “You remember Chloe right?”

“Yeah, she’s there?”

“She lives in Madison…”

“Wow, she was just here.”

“Yeah anyway…she wants me to escort her to her prom.”

“I’ll pay her.”

“She’ll pay you…?” Kyle looked at Chloe like she was crazy. “That’s what she says.”

“Ummm okay? How much?”

“You’re selling me? Really Dani? I wouldn't sell you....for this,” He saw Chloe hold up a 5 then a 0. “50! 50?”

“You kiss her, I’ll kill you. Anything more and I’ll kill you several times and burn your body.”

“Morbid yet fair. I’ll talk to you later, hun.”

“Bye dear. Love you.”

Kyle hung up the phone. “She’s surprisingly alright with it as long as we don’t kiss lips or do anything more.”

“Deal and now I have to go home. So what car do you drive?” She asked.

“A Ferrari Testarossa.”

“I’m totally going to be Prom Queen” She squealed as wrote down her number on a piece of paper and slip it in his pocket. “You're packing!” She blew him a kiss as she walked away. "Ciao!"

“She’s still fucking weird….”

======================

Das it.

Post awards feedback:

The story is meant to be a bit like a sitcom, set in a 90's California that never was. In a way, it reminded me of the classic 90's show "The Wonder Years", with the ups and downs of a band of teens navigating relationships. friends, school, and life. This is what made it a joy to read--it almost feels like it could happen anywhere, even with the references to California removed.

As a kid of the 90's, seeing all the references to 90's culture and mores made me smile, even the making out in the back seat of a Ferrari. The author has done well capturing California of that era, but even though the setting is only a backdrop for the drama, it adds to the feeling that the plot could happen anywhere.

Charactization is where the story really shines--every character has dreams, wishes, hopes, and regrets, but equal amounts of baggage. There's the pair of queen bees, the average everygirl trying to make it in the world--not even the intelligent girl (Alicia) is safe from having baggage. The boys are just as compelling--the gamer geek (the Mario and Zelda references in an early chapter made me grin), the one that likes cars, the African American boy trying to rise above the 'hood--they too have their own baggage to deal with, and these complex characters are what drives the story.

Style wise, each episode is made up of several vignettes that usually focuses on one or two characters at a specific location. While this does help with giving the characters equal screentime, the details in each scene are hit and miss--some are very detailed, and some are very quick and snappy. Some consistency in the detail would help.

There are a few missed commas and capital letters here and there, but these are easily fixed.

Overall: 90/100

A very well written drama that also serves as a love letter to the 90's--come for the story and stay for the deep characters and the nostalgia.

And Dani's review:

From the beginning of the story, it is clear that Daniela is meant to be the everygirl, and when we first meet her, she is the new kid on the block trying to fit in. But as the story progresses, she does fit in, making friends, enemies and (possibly) a lasting relationship. She does grow and mature as the series progresses, going from a scared new kid to a mature and confident young lady, albeit with baggage.

As I stated before, Dani is meant to be the everygirl character, but her transformation to a mature young lady is what drives the story along. At first, she fears not fitting in, but as the characters graduate high school and move on to college, we find out she has joined a sorority, signaling she has become a socially confident young lady. But the star of the show is the romantic side of her character, from clumsy first relationships (that leave her with some not very nice nicknames) to a potentially serious relationship, she also grows romantically as well.

While Dani is a very complex character like the others in the story, I didn't see very much that made her stand out from the crowd of everymen and everygirls. Her complexity is what saves her from a lower score, but even her history has been done before--this just happens to be a very well done example.

Dani does have some glimmers of a sense of humor (such as speaking random German words during the Thanksgiving episode) and a very friendly personality, but her growing relationship with Kyle is where much of the entertainment comes from. While it is wonderful she has a (potentially serious relationship, I want to know her more as an individual, and see more of her personality.

This is very much Dani's story as it is everyone else's, and her transformation to a young lady appears to be the focal point of the story. However, it feels like we don't see much of her in favor of another character's storyline. The last two recommended chapters (especially the Christmas episode) do give her some time in the limelight, but if it were clearer she was the lead, she would be a perfect 10 in this department--points were only docked because there doesn't seem to be much for her to contribute alongside her larger than life co stars

CHAPTER 59:

======================

Wisconsin:

“I can’t believe I’m doing this…” The half Swiss, half Australian sighed. He was dressed in a black suit with a scarlet tie. Will watched his hair being done by Alicia while eating a pack of chips. “Why in God’s name am I doing this?”

“Which god?” Alicia smiled as she flicked his hair up with a blue comb. “Oh relax. You’re doing a nice thing for a girl who has the hots for you.”

“She doesn’t have the hots for me,” Kyle explained. “She just needed a date from a college guy to show that she’s the queen of the school.”

“Ah huh…” Alicia smiled looking at Will. “What do you think?”

“Got go with Thorpe.” Will replied as he stood at the doorway. Kyle smiled smugly. “But she also wants to get into your pants.”

“Dammit Zhao...." He groaned. "She doesn't want to get into my pants. She's a hottie. You don't know what you're talking about."

“Bite me,” Will chuckled as he left the room. “Whatever bro. I’m gonna play Spyro.”

Alicia laughed “Oh Kyle, Kyle, Kyle. I wouldn’t have pegged you as the one to cheat. It’s Daniela’s thing not yours.”

“It’s going to be innocent Prom night. I mean it’s not like she’s like err….” Kyle looked down at his black socks. “Last one I went to.”

“The one where Courtney got angry at you because you took her enemy after you guys broke up and you slept with said enemy who turned out to be your girlfriend,” She dictated. “It’s like an awful TV show. Now if you’re going to sleep with Chloe.”

“Aww man….I'm not gonna sleep with her…”

“Thorpe, your track record suggests that you will.”

“And I’m not going to sleep with her. I have a flight to LA in tomorrow before Europe to meet with my agent.” He explained. “Though I will take those condoms for Dani. I mean you aren’t gonna ever use them and Will doesn’t need to use them? How does that work?”

“Kyle?”

“Yeah Alicia?”

“Shut up.” She walked out of the room. Kyle was ready, his tuxedo was perfect, and he had a corsage in a box for his date, and found time to look at his hair through a mirror. He was impressed looking at his hair. "Take a joke. Humorless prick."

“Alright” He picked up his shoes. “I’ll see you guys later.”

“You have the keys, right?” Will yelled out from the living room. “You know if you’re going to sleep with her.”

“Shut it Will.”

“Someone is cranky!”

"He's really uptight about this," Alicia giggled. "He likes her."

---------------------------

Later:

Kyle sighed as he walked up to Chloe’s house. It was a normal stereotypical 2 story house with a beautiful mowed lawn and several rose bushes that stretched up to a white mailbox. “This sucks…” The brunette teen sighed as he knocked on the door. He looked at the lamp which attracted and zapped a few moths. “Lucky them…” He muttered to himself looking at their dead, fried bodies.

“Hi!” Chloe smiled as she hugged him. “I’m going to win and I’ll be the Queen of the school!”

“Ah huh….” He smiled forcefully until he looked at her. Her short brown hair was curled at the bottom. She wore a simple yet elegant navy high neck midi prom dress with full skirt. “You look…”

“Nice?” She smiled. “So do you and oh my god!” She saw the box that he handed her. “You bought me a corsage? That’s so lame but cute.”

“Yeah, I guess it’s a tradition.” He gave to her with not even a smile on his face. “So you ready to go.”

“Yeah….” She stopped when she saw his car. “That’s your car?” She scrunched her face. “It’s from the 80’s.”

“I’m sorry but I don’t have money to buy a new Ferrari.” Kyle walked up to the door and twisted his key to unlock the car.

“I mean it’s pretty cool….” She shrugged. “Kind of chic.” She opened the door as she walked in. “So it’s a Ferrari. How fast does it go?”

Kyle smiled. “290.”

“Ooh wow…" Chloe gasped. "What does that mean?"

-------------------------

Location: Los Angeles:

Daniela was lying on top of bed as she was packing for a trip to Singapore to visit her adoptive parents. There were clothes everywhere as she was listening to NSync’s hit song ‘Bye Bye Bye’. There were several pieces of clothing piled up on her suitcase. She thought about how Jasmine tried to bribe her.

The teenager decided to avoid any issues with Jasmine by telling her boyfriend everything. She laid down on her bed trying to imagine how it would go.

“Kyle, I love you.”

“I love you too.”

“I have something to tell you though.”

“What’s that?”

“I wasn’t completely honest with you. See, I didn’t like Courtney, actually I hated her. She was this sweet innocent lamb that everybody loved even if she’s dumb as rocks….but I really was jealous about how everybody loved her.”

“So? Who cares what other people think? You’re better than that Dani…”

“Look…” She placed her hands on his’. “I wanted to break you guys up and sleep with you only because I hated her but…”

“Wait…so Courtney was right…” He slowly withdrew his hands. He looked at her staggered and in disbelief. “Wow, just when I thought you couldn’t go low…”

“But you have to believe me by the time I went through it just before prom, I realized it was more than that. I fell for you. You were the only one that I could see myself being with. I really love you.”

“I know you love me but our relationship was built on some petty vendetta you had. Why did you decide to tell me this?”

“Because I wanted to be honest you with, and because Jasmine taped me back in Denver during Christmas when you were in St. Lucia…” Daniela sighed as tears formed in her eyes. “She bribed because she was failing and she wanted me to do her work and her finals.”

“You didn’t?”

“No, I couldn’t. It wasn’t right…” Daniela sighed. “I didn’t want to do that especially to you. I wanted you to hear it from my mouth.”

“You did the right thing.”

“So everything is back to normal?” A little smile crept on her face.

“No.” Kyle took a deep breath. “Dani, I love you but this changes everything…”

“No….” Tears started to form in her eyes. “Don’t….look I’m really sorry.”

“It’s over, I can’t see myself with someone when I’m thinking that this relationship is built on revenge…” Kyle got up from her room. “And you know what the worst part is? I could have really seen a future.”

“Don’t…”

Daniela gasped for air as she woke up from her nightmare. “It was just a dream…” She heard a knock on the door. “Come in.”

“Hey, you all packed?”

“Not yet…” Daniela sat back up. “You guys heading off to New York?”

“Yeah, yeah it should be fun.” Joel remarked. “Going to be me, Gisela, Chris and Courtney but Chris and Courtney like each other and she’s still dating Carl. It's going to be really awkward.”

Daniela muttered “And they call me out…” She shook that off and asked Joel one important question. “Joel, do you think Kyle loves me?”

“Why do you ask?” He raised his eyebrow as he sat on her bed. He looked at her quizzically.

“I don’t know. Just humor me.”

“Dani, he loves you. What’s wrong?” He knew enough about Daniela to know that there was something.

“I wasn’t really honest with about something and I don’t know if I should tell him,” She explained until she stopped when she saw her cousin’s face. “I didn’t cheat on him.”

“I believe you,” He got off her bed. “Look he loves you regardless and honesty is the best policy. Speaking of which, you remember Katherine.”

“The sorority sister that you sleeping with? Oh yeah I remember her….” She glared at him as she picked up a pair of jeans and started to fold them.

“Slept with her. That’s all done now.”

“What happened?” The brunette woman placed her jeans in her suitcase with a little exhaustion in her voice.

“She’s done with college and I may have started a torrid affair with the writer Tina whatever her name is. Some hot loser that I slept with...” Joel sighed. "I know how to pick them. Don't I?"

“And I thought Chris had the issues…” She muttered. “What happened this time?”

“Bribery. Can’t you believe it?”

“Believe me, I can…” Daniela picked up a white blouse and folded it. "Bribery is how the world works I guess."

--------------------------------------------

Elsewhere:

Chris was walking alongside Courtney at Santa Monica Pier. “Courtney, you have to decide between one of us. This is like Betty and Veronica. Oh man, see I think Thorpe would pick the red hair chick, Joel would pick the Betty and I would pick the Veronica.”

They walked past the illuminated Ferris wheel and rides. Courtney could only hear kids screaming, loud pop music being played in background. The Santa Ana winds blew across the area. Courtney sighed as she looked down at her strawberry ice cream. She wore a red floral dress under a leather jacket, a black skirt and black stockings going down to her black knee high boots. “I know. It’s tough…”

“How’s it tough, Courtney?” Chris wore a black jacket over a blue t-shirt and jeans. “What does Carl have that I don’t? Oh I get it…it’s because he’s intelligent. What about all the fun we had at USC together or before that in high school?”

“It’s not that…” Courtney sighed. “It’s because my parents love him and he’s sweet to me. He thinks I’m smart like I know art and politics.”

“But you don’t…” Chris remarked. “Why are you pretending to be someone you’re not? The guy rags on your friends.”

“My friends? Let’s talk about my friends…” Courtney glared at him. “My friends are a few sorority girls, your roommate who rarely talks to me, my best friend who’s brother I used to date before he went to Daniela, a girl who stole him from me and the rest? Are in different places around the country. What are my friends? Who are my friends? I don’t have any friends but Gisela.”

“I’m your friend.”

“Chris, you’re a guy who’s interested me and sleeps with so many girls,” Courtney launched into him. “You’re interested in me because you’re lonely.”

“Wow…” The blonde teen turned around. “Maybe you should stay with Carl. You’re stuck up like he is.” He started to walk away.

Courtney feeling guilty ran up to him. “I’m sorry. I’m just stressed and confused. I’m confused why a guy like you would be interested in me. You’ve dated so many beautiful women and you’re hot and super nice and I don’t know why you would be interested in me.”

“I like you because you’re nice, fun to be around, sweet and really cute.” He looked at her. “Plus you have nice tits.” Courtney let that roll. “Courtney, it’s your decision to make and I want to be with you. It’s your choice to make, it’s either me or him and for our sake you should decide soon.” He looked around and saw a rollercoaster. “Keen!”

“Oh no…”

“Oh yes!” He smiled looking at the unsure and scared red haired teen. “C’mon it’ll be fun.”

“I don’t know…”

“Oh don’t be a weenie!” He led her towards the rollercoaster. "It's gonna be fucking great. Rollercoastings are the best thing ever."

"No..." Courtney shook her head. "Nooooo...." She sighed followed him to the rollercoaster queue. She took a deep breath as she peered ahead of the queue. "I hate rollercoasters...."

------------------------

Later:

“What do I do, Gisela?” Courtney sat on her bed still in her outfit. “I like Chris but there’s Carl.”

“Courtney,” Gisela was still packing for their trip to New York. “Get packing and just go with your heart. I’m totally sick of this who do I choose. Just like stop it.”

“You think everything will work out if I don’t pick Chris and we go on the trip?” She pointed out.

Gisela stopped packing since it was a really good point. “You totally have to pick him. It would be like so awkward if you don’t.”

“I can’t decide by then….” Courtney then screamed into a pillow. “I’m not going.”

“Court, you have to come.” Gisela frowned as she sat on her best friend’s bed. “Everything will like work out.”

“No, it won’t….” She hugged her pillow. “If I pick Chris, it will be awkward, if I pick Carl it will be really really awkward and if I don’t pick any of them yet, it’ll be worse. I can’t go.”

“Alright, alright.” Gisela nodded. “Just trust your heart.” She patted Courtney on her thigh before getting up. “It won’t fail you.”

“Thanks Ella.”

"Oh boy...." Gisela muttered under her breath. "This is so like not gonna be like a bad thing."

--------------------------------

Location: A High School in Madison:

“So this is your school…” Kyle muttered as he observed the small high school that Chloe was part of. “Kind of small.” The hall was decorated with streamers, balloons, cellophane paper, and flowers, a lot of flowers. "Our prom was in a 5 star hotel."

“Sorry this isn’t Malibu, you snob.” Chloe laughed with her arms around his’ arms. “It’s a dump. A real dump.” She played her left earring as it dangled from her left earlobe.

“I guess…” He looked around until they walked into the school hall. There were flashing lights in different colors, a DJ and a disco ball that reflected light down onto the dance floor like a normal plain old prom. There were several women in different types of dresses and men in tuxedos. “Man, I feel out of place.”

“Oh don’t be a sour puss.” Chloe chuckled as she lightly slapped him. “You look handsome. Oh, there’s my friends.”

“Hi Chloe…” She turned around to this guy with glasses and braces and light brown hair all over the place. Kyle looked at his eyes, he could tell that he had a crush on Chloe.

“Oh hey Matt…” Chloe though being nice wasn’t interested. “How are you?”

“Good, wow you look great.”

“Thank you…” She looked at Kyle, rolling her eyes. “This is my date, Kyle Thorpe. He’s in college.”

“Oh hi, I’m Matthew Andrews.” He put his hand out for Kyle to shake.

Kyle shook his hand tight, a bit too tight. “Nice to meet you.” He turned around to see a bunch of girls that Chloe said were her friends. The music changed to Britney Spears and they were trying to find Chloe.

“I’ll vote for you!”

“Thanks Matt….” Chloe smiled awkwardly as the pair walked away from him.

Kyle whispered to her “The guy has a hard on for you.”

“I know…so awks...” She whispered back irritated by Matthew annoying them but she started to giggle. “You remember the last time we were at a dance together?”

“Ummm….no.”

“Oh come on, we tried to get Joel and Courtney jealous and it worked,” She continued to giggle. “What happened between you guys?”

“We dated and we broke up. Things just going complicated.” He explained with a little exhaustion in his voice like he told the story a lot. “Past is part.”

“Chloe? Oh my god!” One of her friends that wouldn’t look out of place in a Barbie commercial jumped up and down in giddiness. She was in a beautiful turquoise mermaid dress. “You’re going to be Prom Queen!” Her eyes looked directly at Kyle. “And I know all the hot guys in school, where have you been hiding him? He’s hot.”

Kyle couldn’t help but blush. “This is my date Kyle, he’s from the University of Wisconsin and is an athlete and did I mention that he’s Australian and…German?”

“Swiss.”

“Swiss!” Chloe bragged. “And that’s his Ferrari in the parking lot.” with a sequel. "How amazing is it? It's so fast and powerful." Kyle smiled at Chloe bragging and showing off. He found it kind of endearing.

“Oh my god!”

“Can’t wait to show you off.”

“You better win Prom Queen…” Kyle sighed. “I hate being paraded.”

“How do you think I feel? You were backup.” Chloe joked with him. “Just don’t make a scene and get ready to dance.”

"Alright boss." He saluted her.

"You're funny." She laughed as she slapped him on the back. "You're a lot bigger than I remember. You roidin'?"

"Roidin' in football would make me worse." He laughed. "A lot worse. Could play baseball though."

Chloe giggled as she grabbed his arms and led him to the dance floor. "Let's dance!" among a group of people on the dance floor dancing away.

-------------------------------------------

Later:

“Thanks for the great night.” Chloe was sitting in the car. They were in front of a house which had loud music coming out of it. It was the post prom party and it sounded like it was off the hook. “You were such a great help.”

“No problems,” Kyle smiled as he tapped away on the steering wheel. “I’m glad you won Prom Queen. It must be an awesome title. I can safely say that I danced with a Prom Queen.”

“Yeah, it is but I have to ace those finals as well,” She smiled before staring into Kyle’s eyes. “Are you sure you don’t want to come?”

Kyle chuckled under his breath “Yeah, I’m sure. I have a flight to Los Angeles tomorrow morning and then I’m headed to Europe to see my dad in London. You have a great night though.”

“Alright…” Chloe smiled as she unfastened her seat belt. She kissed Kyle lightly on the cheek “Thank you so much.”

“You’re welcome.”

"Maybe I'll see you around."

"Maybe."

Two Days Later:

Location: Los Angeles:

Courtney stared at the ceiling from her bed. She laid down thinking about which guy she would decide. So many scenarios played through her head. She left her best friend and Joel behind as they went to New York City for a trip to see Joel’s parents and to enjoy the summer break.

Chris didn’t leave because he still wanted to know the decision. Courtney thought about it “Chris is sweet but Carl is smart and my parents love him but I’m so relaxed and myself around Chris. He’s hot and everyone loves him. No one loves Carl ever since that incident.” She referred to the incident where he called Daniela a whore right in front of her boyfriend.

“I can’t decide but I have to…” She picked up the phone and dialed a number. She heard the phone ring and ring. She waited for every single ring, her heart beating quickly. Once she heard the answering machine, her heart sank. She hung up and dialed another number. She felt her heart pulsating quickly as she waited for a response. Each dial tone was an agonizing wait.

“Hello”

“Hey…so I’ve made up my mind…It’s you.”

------------------------------

Later:

Courtney walked up to an apartment. She took a long deep breath as she heard footsteps walk up to the door from the inside. She checked her red hair which was still in a high bun. She waited and waited, her nerves nearly getting the best of her. She felt like throwing up, any longer he took and she might have. The door finally opened. “Hey” She smiled looking at the guy she picked.

“Hey.” He smiled at her. “I’m surprised you picked me.”

“Why?” She looked quizzically at him.

“Well,” He gestured her to come inside. “Chris is popular, he’s a lot more good looking than me and he’s a nice guy for an athlete.”

“Yeah but when the time came…” She explained. “He wasn’t there.” He was the first call, the call that decided it all. Her choice came down to who was there at the right time, and he wasn’t. “You were here Carl and that’s what matters to me. When I needed someone, you were there to pick up the phone.” She moved up him. “And that’s when I made my choice. I choose you…” She kissed him passionately on the lips. “I picked you.”

“You most certainly did.” Carl smiled as for once, the geek won the girl at least in his mind.

---------------------------------------

“Let me get this straight…” Kyle sat opposite Daniela at a café inside LAX. “Bette and Sean offered you the chance to go to New York and you didn’t take it. Why?”

“Because,” She smiled looking at her boyfriend lovingly. “Because I have a great life here and even if I’m close to you, it’s like why?”

“Fair enough,” He looked at the time on his Tag Heuer. “I better jet. I have a long flight ahead of me.”

“Kyle, wait!” Daniela called out to him. “I need to talk to you about something. I love you and I want to be honest with you. I told Jasmine some secret stuff because I thought she was my best friend. But she tried to bribe and blackmail me. She asked me to cheat for her and I couldn't take it. So I had to tell you the truth.”

"What?"

“So you understand what I’m trying to tell you, I just wanted to be honest.” Daniela sighed. “I love you and I couldn’t help it.”

“Yeah….I understand….” Kyle looked forlorn as he stared down at the coffee table. “Ummm…just can’t believe it.”

“I’m sorry but you know I love you and just thinking about it makes me feel so bad and stupid,” Daniela started to shed a tear. “I mean I was so petty about this whole thing.”

“Look Daniela, you did the right thing but what did Jasmine have that was so incriminating?” He asked her.

Daniela took a long deep breath. “When I was in Denver for Christmas, you were still with Courtney and were in St. Lucia, I told Jasmine how much I hated Courtney. She was this stupid girl that everyone loved and could do no wrong, and it was that sweet innocent act like annoyed me. So….” The beautiful brunette looked down at her coffee. “I wanted to ruin her, so I wanted to steal her boyfriend.”

“Which was me….” Kyle took a deep breath. This was hitting him hard. “So Courtney was right…Man I feel stupid. You broke us up. This whole soul mate crap was you? Right?”

“Yes…”

“So, our relationship was born on out revenge and contempt because of her,” Kyle looked down. He couldn’t look at her. “Man, I don’t know what to say.”

“I thought I would just sleep with you and that’s it but I fell for you hard before prom. I really did,” Daniela sighed. “You told me I was better than I thought I was. You made me strive to be the person that deserves a nice guy like you. I knew I could trust you like I never trusted another guy. I really saw a future.”

“Daniela,” He rarely called her Daniela and she noticed this. “I thought I knew you. I told everyone that you were more than some vindictive loose cannon but I guess I was wrong, I guess I didn’t know you as well as I thought…” He took another deep breath. “I guess you did speed up the process, we weren’t going to last.” He said referring to him and Courtney.

“You don’t mean that, do you?” Daniela’s tears came frequently as she felt everything word crushing her heart.

“No, I don’t,” Kyle looked at her. “I love you Dani, I really do.”

Daniela felt her heart flutter like everything was going to be perfect, everything was going to turn out right by her honesty. “Joel was right; everything was going to work out.” She thought to herself as she looked at her coffee. “I’m sorry about the whole thing. I hope we can get passed this.”

“We can…” Kyle looked down as Daniela smiled. “But not together. Not for a while.”

Daniela felt her heart break. “What do you mean? I love you and I told you the truth. I was honest with you. I want a future with you. Don’t do this….” She started to let out a couple of tears. “Please don’t do this….I love you.”

Kyle couldn’t bear to see her that way. He knew he crushed her heart. “You betrayed me. I just can’t believe you would stoop that low to break me up with someone but....”

Daniela felt a little glimmer of hope that maybe he was having seconds thoughts. “Please don’t give up on us…” She was hoping yet pleading.

“It’s over, Daniela…” He got up. “And you know what the worst part about all this? I truly thought there was future there. I wanted to be with you but you just broke my trust and….I just can’t…I won’t tell anyone about any of this. I wouldn’t do that to you.”

Daniela watched him leave, her heart shattered as she was a mess inside. Kyle walked outside towards his gate. It was all over.

-----------------------------

Location: New York City:

Joel and Gisela were walking around Central Park together. They could see the several tall buildings in the Big Apple. There were several trees, birds singing and butterflies fluttering about. “I love New York in the spring.” Gisela twirled as they walked along a footpath. “It’s so pretty.”

“Yeah,” Joel nodded in agreement. “It’s a great place. It’s too bad that Courtney and Chris couldn’t come.”

“She was still decided and I guess like Chris totally didn’t want to be a part of it.” Gisela sighed. “Romance is like a killer. It’s so fun just being around people but like not worrying about stuff. What about you?”

“What do you mean?” He stopped. “Romance?”

“Yeah, like what happened after Hannah?” Gisela put her hand on his shoulder. “Were you like some total monk?”

“Not exactly, kind of don’t want to tell you…” He chuckled as he felt her arm around his. “What?” Joel put his other hand up defensively as she raised her eyebrow at him. “Alright Blondie, I’ll tell you.”

“Yay!” She cracked up laughing.

“Well after Hannah there was Katherine, now Katherine was Hannah’s older sister and the head of the sorority that Daniela was a part of. It was crazy because it could have blown up in my face.” He scratched the back of his neck.

“A powerful woman, Joel? I’m impressed.” She smiled proudly.

“Don’t be. It was going to end bad and it nearly did when that reporter Tina Baines found out and took pictures of Katherine and I in an uncompromising position. It's a mess and gets messier.”

“Oooh scandal.”

“Yeah but Tina promised me she would release them if I didn’t sleep with her. It was basically I would sleep with her and she would promote my career.”

Gisela slapped him on the arm. “Joel Harris, this is like totally not you. I can’t believe like you would stoop so low.”

“I ended it before anything happened and my career is down the tubes…” Joel sighed. “It was great while it lasted.”

“I’m proud of you.”

“Then there was Silvia and it was amazing but she and I have different lives,” Joel sighed until he looked into Gisela’s eyes. “Everything was a lot harder around those girls but with you everything is just easier, you know.”

“Joel Harris, what are you like trying to say?” They both stopped in their tracks. “Are you trying to like feed me a line like I'm Katherine or Tina?”

“It’s not like that…” He stared at her. “I really mean it. Just being around you in this city, it’s perfect. I can feel at ease around you and….” His eyes lit up when he felt her lips pressed against his. Her hands pulled him closer. He moved his hands on her lower back.

“Wow…” Gisela broke the kiss. “I’m totally sorry. It’s like….”

The pair kissed right in the middle of Central Park, several years of pent up passion and romance went into that kiss. All their troubles of their future, education, friends and family, past relationships blew away. For that one fleeting moment time stood still and everything was perfect.

CHAPTER 60

====================================

Summer Break:

Location: New York State:

“I don’t think this is a good idea.”

“Oh like come on,” Gisela smiled. The pair of them had been travelling around the United States in her BMW Roadster. They drove from Los Angeles to New York City and back. “Like don't be a drag.”

“The place is called Poughkeepsie. There’s nothing good about a place called Poughkeepsie. Why are we going to Poughkeepsie?” In the space of a month the pair had driven through San Diego, Arizona, Albuquerque, Oklahoma City, Missouri, Chicago, Indiana, Columbus, Daniela’s former state West Virginia, through Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. They spent majority of the summer in New York City with Joel’s parents.

“Courtney suggested it. I think she like loves the place but she's done at Baton Rouge.” The blonde teen replied. Her golden blonde hair was noticeably shorter from long and straight hairstyle to a medium bob. "I don't want to go. Like any ideas?"

“I don't know but maybe I dunno....” Joel got out of her BMW. He was wearing a red t-shirt and black cargo shorts. He pulled out a road map from his pocket. “We drive back to New York City and from there we drive like we did before,” The brunette male pulled out a yellow pencil that was rolled around the left side of the map. “We could drive up towards the north and visit Alicia.”

“Or not.” Gisela leaned against her silver BMW M3. “She’s like with her parents up north in like Canada.” She explained with a snobbish tone when mentioning Canada. “Like why don’t we go down south to like Memphis or ummm…like Blue Ridge Highway? That’s totally right!” She pulled out a travel book from her giant brown purse. “It’s like one of the most totally like one of the most romantic drives.”

“Yeah…” Joel lent against Gisela’s BMW. “I don’t know…” He sighed.

“What’s wrong?” She titled her head as she scooched up right next to him.

"It's really far."

"That's so not it. What's on your mind? Like you've been spooked for so long."

“Ahh it’s nothing,” He looked at her. “Well it’s just I don’t know if this is just a one time thing or not. I don’t know it feels like we’re just caught up in the whole summer fling thingy.”

“Joel…” Gisela put her hand on his as reassurance. “I don’t want this to be like a one time thing. I’ve like totally enjoyed being with you and I want to like be with you.”

“I don’t know. What will everyone think?” He sighed taking his hand away from hers. “All the gossip and all my history with Tina, Katherine, Silvia and Chloe and stuff.”

“Yeah but it’s like not like I’ve had a history,” Gisela looked up at the clouds. “I’ve dated so many guys. I’m totally not put off by like your history because I know you as a person and you’re a great guy. My brother totally hid his relationship with your cousin, so like whatever.”

“Yeah, alright we should get going. We have a long drive. Kind of want to get somewhere before we reach that highway.

“Go and find some totally romantic BnB…” The blonde woman moved closer and closer towards Joel. “Hmmm?” He couldn’t resist her seduction. He moved closer and closer to meet her lips. “Let’s go!” Gisela smiled as she backed off and jumped into the car.

"That's cruel." Joel exclaimed. He felt teased, shorthanded as he got inside the Beemer.

Location: Baton Rouge:

In a mansion, a young red haired teen walked downstairs. It was an elegant mansion, a mansion was something from a photo taken in the 1800’s around the Civil War. There was a beautiful garden outside that led to the white old mansion. The red haired teen looked at all the old paintings from the 1800’s as she walked downstairs. Her left hand caressing the wooden railing.

“Courtney?”

Courtney Watson heard the voice as she finally made it down the flight of stairs. She looked a little glass figurine of a southern Civil War fighter. “Afternoon!” Courtney smiled wearing a lovely blue dress with her red hair tied up in a bun with a pink ribbon holding it up. She looked at her boyfriend, Carl Miller.

Courtney and her parents were on vacation with Carl and his parents and their mansion in Baton Rouge. “What’s the plan for today?”

“Actually your parents wanted me to call you.” Carl shrugged not knowing the reason. “You better go see them.”

“Huh…” Courtney blinked a few times before walking to her parents. They were at the tea room talking among each other. “Hi.”

“Courtney, please sit down.” Her mother gestured for Courtney to sit opposite her.

“What happened?” Courtney sat down. “Are we leaving?”

“Courtney, we are just concerned that living with your friend might not be the best idea,” Her mother explained. “Carl told us how much of a thug.”

“Thug?” The confused teen titled her head.

“Your ex-boyfriend is and that other fellow, the one you went on a date with,” Her mother continued referring to Kyle and Chris. “We just feel it is better if you live on campus.”

“But why? They are my friends.”

“Courtney,” Carl joined in. “Your ex-boyfriend nearly broke my nose and dated a girl who you said had a loose morals. You live with his sister and then there was the other guy. How can we be sure that…”

“Carl, could we talk in private.” Courtney got up and said to the group. “Excuse us.” She and Carl walked to a separate room. “What’s wrong? Don’t you trust me?”

“Courtney,” Carl put his hands on her shoulder and stared at her intensely. “I trust you but I don’t trust your friends. Why are you still friends with him? He lied about dating a girl that you hated and his sister is going to take his side because they are family. Then there was the other guy…”

“Chris?”

“He’s close with all your friends. Tell me this Courtney, why should I trust them?” Carl shook his head and looked away. “I thought you would understand. Why don’t you understand? I thought we are together and you won’t do me this little favor? I’m not asking you to cut them out of your life.”

Courtney thought about it for a second. “Carl, I love you but I can’t stay in a dorm. I have too many clothes and stuff. The closet space is so small. I can tell you that nothing will happen between me and Chris. We are over, a long over. I’m with you, not him.” She explained. “But if you want me to move….”

“I’m not asking for much….” Carl held her hand tightly. “Please, just do it. I’ll help you move in. Please do it for me.” Carl was different from Kyle and Chris. Kyle was very independent, so he didn’t ask for a lot, Chris was super romantic he would try to accommodate Courtney but he was too accommodating. Carl was different, a lot different. There was something that she found interesting except she couldn’t quite put her finger on it.

"I don't know. It sounds like...." Courtney was a bit blind. "Oh maybe it doesn't sound like that. Where are we going today?"

-------------------------------

Location: London, UK

Loud rock music was being played in a room in London, England. A brunette male was lying down on his bed bobbing his head listening to the song. He stared at the light blub that was attached to the ceiling. He heard a knock on his door as he got off his bed. “Yeah?”

The knocking continued as Kyle Thorpe opened the door. He had been travelling with his father around the United Kingdom and France before leaving him to travel around Europe but he was back. He opened the door. “What?” He looked at the woman standing in front of him.

“Turn down the music.” His step mother stood in front of him with a cross look on her face. Her name was Helena Vaughan. She was a supermodel that got into the fashion editorial world . “It's really loud.” She looked at Kyle who stood right in front of her wearing a WilliamsF1 jacket. "What are you listening to?"

“Coffee and TV, Blur,” Kyle replied. “So where's Dad?"

Helena shook her head. “He's gone shopping at John Lewis. I think he's getting something for his own birthday or he could be buying me something. I don't know with him. So how are you?" She didn't see him much and she didn't know too much about him but she could tell that something was bothering her step-son

Kyle couldn’t help but bobbing his head up and down to the song. “I’m fine, Helena. What if I'm not good enough to play professionally? What if I fuck up and end up fucking with my life and working in some 9 to 5 office talking shit with some loser at the watercooler” He vented. "I don't have the same drive as Gisela. Then there is the other stuff."

“The break up with your girlfriend” She asked picked up a cricket ball and clutched on to it. Kyle looked really surprised that she knew. "What? You don't think I'm smart enough to pick up on cues?" She chuckled. "Your father told me."

“Figured,” He sighed before he burped. “Excuse me. She and I…”

“You can tell me.”

“She used me to be mean to my ex-girlfriend and the trust was gone.” He started to explain the story to her in detail.

Helena stopped him. “Well love is a complicated thingy. Trust is important but so is honesty. She told you the truth and she loves you, right?” She was wearing a purple dress with a black jacket on top. She had beautiful black hair and green eyes.

“She loves me and I love her…” He stared at his black Umbro boots. “You think I screwed up?”

“It's really hard to say.” Helena bluntly answered. “Maybe you did. Maybe you didn't. Only you could know that. I guess you should talk to her. I think you still want to be with her.”

“I can’t…”

“And why not?” Helena threw the cricket ball at him which he caught. "Pick up the phone and call her. I'll pay for the international charges."

“She’s somewhere in South East Asia. Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines, I don’t know where she is.” Kyle threw the ball back. "Plus she's probably shacked up with some rando."

"Well maybe you should move on," Helena shrugged as she caught and threw the Duke cricket ball back. "You could always move with us. I'm sure your mother and Julien will be fine with that."

"Huh…” He stopped. “That's a neat idea but I don't know. I still got the lease back in Madison. It's unfair to everyone else.”

“Well think about. It would be great if Eric was here. I don't want to be late for dinner” She asked as she looked at her watch. "Can you call him?"

"Where are you guys hitting up?”

“Foliage at Knightsbridge. My friends say it is a great place” She got up and threw the cricket ball back at her step-son. "Kyle I can offer you advice. I started modelling at 16. I missed out on boys and stuff like that but it was for my career. Think about your future and not some girl that might not be."

“I guess you are right” Kyle sighed. “But it's hard...”

Helena smiled as she nudged the door on her way out. “Nothing in life is. Oh by the way. I got tickets for the Lord's Test on Day 1. Are you interested?”

“Hell yeah!!!” He exclaimed in probably the most excited he was in a long time. “It will be so wicked. How did you?”

“I have friends in high places. Oh my father will come with,” She explained to him in Italian. “That was a very long conversation. Never seen him so excited." Helena shook her head. She was referring to a long conversation about the 1998/99 Ashes when the English came to the shores of Australia to try to win the Ashes. They were under Surrey's Alec Stewart. They lost 3-1 in the 5 test series. Helena's father and Kyle were talking about it. Eric, Kyle's father joined in. It was a fun conversation for all.

“That's awesome” Kyle said rolled off the bed. “I wish I could stay during Premier League time. Which team could you get tickets for?”

"Spurs. Dad loves the Spurs. He would love it if you got to play with them."

"As if."

"Oh you will." Helena smiled. "You'll listen. Now where the heck is your father..." She picked up her cell phone and dialed his number. "Honestly. The both of you are just as bad as each other."

"But my phone ringtone is crappy...."

Location: San Francisco:

Chris was driving in his Jaguar by his lonesome. He was on his from his parents’ place to San Francisco where one of his baseball teammates went for the holiday. Chris had a good season even if he didn’t see much playing time being a freshman and all. He was quite devastated that he didn’t hear from Courtney, so much so he left without warning to travel around California. He wondered to himself what it would have been like if Alicia was in Berkeley. He always had a playful relationship with her, a playful relationship that led to casual sex between the pair.

He felt bad as he drove through the highways for leaving his best friend and Gisela out to dry because of his feelings. Chris knew that she picked Carl over him but he couldn’t understand why. He was nice to her, he was romantic, and he was better looking. He remembered a story from Kyle on why she and he broke up. “Her parents…?” That drove Kyle away towards Daniela and he knew that was probably the reason that drove Courtney to Carl.

“San Francisco!” He smiled gazing at the sights. “Man, this place is kicking.” He found a parking spot just off Market Street. He jumped out of his Jaguar and immediately took out his sunglasses. “Love this place.” He clenched his fist in triumph.

The blonde teen dressed in a polo shirt and jeans, started to walk around Market Street, a street famous for San Francisco’s cable cars and buildings. “Man, this is really killer.” He looked around as he ran his hand through his mop like blonde hair. He pulled out a piece of paper from his jean pocket. “Alright directions!”

“Excuse me?” Chris immediately melted when he heard a voice behind him. It wasn’t like anything he heard. “Do you know where Filmore Street is?” The woman had a Russian accent and he found it so hot.

He prayed “Please be hot, please be hot….” To his mind as he turned around. His jaw dropped in awe when he saw her. She had long and beautiful light brown hair curled at the bottom. She had beautiful green eyes and she was tall. “Oh yeah…I know Filmore Street.” He said proudly. “Just follow me.” She wore a simple white lace blouse and white pencil skirt with a white sunhat.

Chris thought she wouldn’t buy it but “Okay, I’ll follow you.” Her Russian accent just melted him like putty.

“I mean are you sure? Are you sure you can trust a stranger?” He felt kind of bad because she seemed a bit too naïve and trusting. In his mind though he was cursing himself “Damn…I’m gonna miss my chance. Dammit Joel…”

“Yes, you look nice guy.” She replied pulling out a very small map from her black purse. “Map is too small.” She showed him. The letters were so small that they were illegible.

Chris finally noticed a giant red suitcase behind her. “You want me to carry your suitcase for you? It looks heavy.” He asked nicely as he walked up towards it.

“Thank you.” She smiled at him.

Chris picked up the suitcase and immediately realized that it wasn’t light. He couldn’t fathom how she could walk around the city holding and dragging that thing. “I’m Chris Ambrose. You are?”

“My name is Elizaveta Medvedova. Are you from here?” Elizaveta asked.

“Me?” Chris chuckled mainly because everything about Elizaveta was extremely attractive. This was his chance in his mind to get with a foreign woman. “Nope, I’m here to visit a friend. Where are you from?”

“St. Petersburg.”

“In Florida?” The clueless blonde teen wondered. “Because you sound like you’re from Russia or something.”

“Umm….St. Petersburg is in Russia.”

“Ohhh….” Chris felt smaller and smaller. “I’m from Los Angeles.”

“I stayed there for a two weeks. I did modelling work in Los Angeles.”

“Yes!!!” Chris’ mind yelled out in triumph. “Oh really? That’s awesome. Oh right…you want to go to Filmore Street. So let’s go.”

“Thank you so much.” Elizaveta smiled at him like he was her hero.

“It’s no problem.” In that second he completely forgot about Courtney. “I parked around here.” Chris took Elizaveta’s suitcase and carried it to his Jaguar. “I’ll drop you off there because I have to meet a friend but call me when you get back to LA.” He gave his number.

“I will. Thank you for your help.”

"Score!!!"

Location: Singapore City

Daniela Cooper was at a bar holding an empty bottle of beer in her hand as she listened to the ambient chill out music in the background. It was a small bar which several people coming back from work. “Whisky please…” She slurred.

“With?”

“I dunno just make it a something like a scotch…” She pulled out a cigarette from her purse. “Are you judging me?” She looked at the bartender who was a cute British guy. “What did I do?”

“Nothing, you’re just funny when you’re drunk.” He laughed at her. Daniela could see his rippling biceps.

“Well you try having your boyfriend dump you for stuff that was your fault. He was right, I was so immature and now I lost him. He’s probably dicking around in Europe with like that supermodel. Alcohol me, dammit.” Daniela exclaimed. “He was hot.”

The bartender was giggling. “I’m sure he was.”

“Don’t you judge you….British guy. He’s gonna be like this awesome soccer player and you’re gonna see it. What’s your name?”

“Tom.”

“I’m Daniela, I’m from Los Angeles. Where are you from?” She slapped the table while still holding her unlit cigarette.

“Singapore.” He laughed.

“No I mean, you know what I mean.”

“I’m from Liverpool. You need matches?” He asked referring to the cigarette that she was holding.

Daniela looked at the cigarette. “No…cause I have a lighter.” She was moving around. “Where’s my alcohol? Actually I want a shot of tequila.”

“Are you sure?” He got a shot glass from under the counter and a bottle of tequila.

“Dammit Tom, my boyfriend would be like that. He’s Australian and Swiss and I’m American and you’re British guy,” She looked at her cigarette. “He didn’t like cigarettes, so whatever.” She threw her arms in the air, flinging her cigarette somewhere on the sticky, dirty floor. “Crap…”

“Oh well.” Tom smiled as he poured her a shot. “There you go.” He gave her the shot glass.

Daniela went at it. She drank it in one gulp before shaking her head around. “You’re hot…” She slurred. “Can I have sex with you? It’s only fair cause you’re serving drinks and my ex-boyfriend is in Europe probably fucking Francesca Matteruci or whatever, you know that supermodel. Tom, stop laughing, I’m not lying.”

“I’m sure you’re telling the truth but I’ll pass on that offer.” He chuckled at how funny and outrageous the brunette woman was.

“Why not? Because I’m not hot?” She pointed at him. “I have great breasts thank you very much.”

“I’m sure you do and you are very attractive,” Tom smiled. “But you’re drunk and I can’t do that.”

“You are so lame…” The drunk teenager scoffed. “What you have a girlfriend? What a loser.”

“I think you’ve had enough. I’ll get you a taxi.” Tom smiled as Daniela sighed. She pulled out her credit card. “I’m sure you’re great company but I think you need to talk to your ex for some closure. It will help you not be super destructive.”

“Why do bartenders have great advice?” Daniela asked as she pointed her credit card at him. “It’s like Cheers cause like everyone knows your name and shit.”

"It's part of our course."

CHAPTER 61

============================

Two months later:

Location: San Francisco:

Daniela Cooper was at San Francisco Airport waiting for her flight. Her flight somehow went through San Francisco on its way to Los Angeles. A lot had changed in those two months. Her hair had gone from dark brown to black. Her hair style went from bangs to a pixie cut. She looked around at the airport to mainly try to find her gate.

She enjoyed being with her parents and travelling around. However the weirdness of being single caught up to her. She wondered what she was going to do with all her free time unattached. She walked with her bag, passed several stores before running into a luggage trolley. “Sorry.”

“It’s alright…”

Daniela immediately looked up. That voice was so familiar to her, it was soothing to her ears and she saw him after 3 months. He looked practically the same. The only difference was that he was bigger, more muscular than he was 3 months ago. “Kyle?”

“Dani?” He looked at her and immediately noticed what she did with her hair. “What are you doing here?”

Daniela stared at her ex-boyfriend. “Just waiting for my plane to Los Angeles, you?”

“Madison via St. Paul,” He still couldn’t help but stare at her hairstyle. “Like your hair. Kind of Eurochic.”

“Yeah,” Daniela smiled. “It was really humid in Singapore. Why not chop it off you know?”

Kyle moved his eyebrows up. “Guess so. So how was Singapore and the rest of the South East Asia?”

American Airlines …. to Indiana departing at 4:30. Please go to Gate 2 for boarding.

“It was nice. Great to see the family again,” She smiled meekly. Things felt very awkward between the exes. “How was Europe? You look fitter.”

“Yeah Europe was great, travelled around,” Kyle shrugged. “Did a lot of fitness stuff, got to see the cricket, spend time with my dad and step-mum, and got to drive a shitty Fiat. Didn't really do much else. So how are you?” He asked her as he gazed into her beautiful blue eyes. He felt a pit in his stomach. "She's probably moved on."

Daniela immediately knew what he meant. “Honestly, I’ve been better.” She said with a deep sigh. "It was raining a lot."

"Well that Singapore for you."

"And us. I've been a lot better. It's been hard.

Kyle nodded “Yeah I know what you mean. Look,” He took a deep breath. "You told me the truth and I may have jumped the ship and shit. So, I don't know if you wanna..."

“Kyle…” Daniela interrupted. “It was my fault. I tried to ruin your relationship with Courtney and I did a lot of thinking and I can’t blame you for your decision.”

“Uhhh?"

“Kyle, I love you and I always will but there’s just no going back for a while,” She said to him like it was the hardest thing she had ever done. “You’ll always be more than a friend and I don’t want to ruin that because of a break up. It’s naïve to think that you haven’t moved on, so…” Daniela painted a horrifying picture of him and a beautiful blonde Czech girl in a hotel room making out.

Kyle painted a similar image. Daniela in a hotel room with an attractive guy from Leeds. "I really didn't. I didn't have the time. I was kind of too busy with family and training."

This brightened up Daniela. "Really?" She was a bit iffy because there was a chance he could have been lying. She looked carefully at his green eyes. "I didn't either. There was like too much to see and explore."

"United Airlines to St. Paul departing at 4:00 is boarding at Gate 12."

“Shit. Guess it that looks like I’m off. Hey, it was great seeing you again.” Kyle smiled as Daniela moved towards him.

The pair of them shared an awkward hug. “Have a safe flight and I'll talk to you sometime.”

“Yeah, I will.” He looked at his watch. “Alright I better jet…”

“Bye….” Daniela watched as Kyle left. She immediately groaned as she sat back down. Her head was in her hands, it was like torture. “Why?” She asked herself. "This sucks"

---------------------

Location: Santa Monica:

Joel and Gisela were making out on her place in Santa Monica. “Huh?” He saw a glimpse of the digital clock on one of the tables. “Crap.”

“What’s wrong?” asked Gisela as she slid off Joel and sat down on her couch.

“Was supposed to pick up Dani and I’m kind of late.” He rushed to get his wallet, cell phone and keys and realized that something was missing. He immediately looked at his girlfriend. “Why are you wearing my shirt? I need my shirt, Gisela.”

“If you want it…” She smiled innocently. “You have to come and get it.” She wore his white collared shirt over her underwear. “

“Great, you want to make me late?”

“Totally…” She smiled as she pulled her boyfriend down on to the couch. “Relax, she’ll be fine…” She said as she kissed him on the neck.

“You’re horrible, you know that.” He put his lips to her. “Really….horrible…” he whispered.

“Like tell me something I don’t know….”

"I really, really, really need to go..."

Gisela chuckled. "Sure you do..." She whispered as she rolled him over on the couch.

--------------------

Later:

Location: Los Angeles

Daniela was waiting at the arrivals for Joel. She had been waiting for 30 minutes and there was no sign of him. She stood there with her luggage, waiting and waiting by herself. Every time she tried to get angry with Joel, her mind would cross to her encounter with her ex-boyfriend. “Where is he?” She muttered to herself. Her cell phone was dead and she had no quarter for a phone call. She mused when she saw a Starbucks.

“Dani!” Joel called out to her. He ran towards her obviously rushing. “I’m really sorry.” He apologized as he went straight to pick her bags up.

“About damn time,” She glared at him. “What the hell were you doing? You look a mess.”

“Yeah, kind of been busy,” Joel said sheepishly. “Was cleaning the house cause you and Chris are coming. I think he should be close to home. How was your trip?”

Daniela answered with a smile and “It was nice. It was great to explore so many great cultures and great to see my parents.”

“Well, you’re back home. It’s going to be kind of depressing. When I went with Thorpe to Australia, man when we got back, it was depressing.” He held her bags as they went to his Miata in the parking lot. “It’s going to hit you.”

“I know it.” Daniela yawned. “I’m feeling it. I couldn’t get any sleep on the flight.”

“I can imagine. Anyway have you talked to Thorpe recently?” He didn’t notice the visible discomfort on Daniela’s face. “I wonder how Europe went.”

“I talked to him. He’s fine…” She wasn’t good at showing the discomfort as she sat in the passenger seat.

There was an air of awkward silence between the cousins as Joel drove out of the parking lot and on to the freeway. “What happened? Ever since I mentioned Thorpe, you’ve been silent.”

“I’m just tired, Joel.” Daniela replied. She was in a grumpy mood as she watched scenery of the concrete jungle. Buildings and cars everywhere, nothing as chaotic compared to the cities in Malaysia, Philippines or Vietnam. There was so much character to those towns and cities but here in LA, she could feel all her adventurous spirit draining away.

“Dani, I’m family…”

“Joel, I’m fine!” She raised her voice practically yelling at him. “Do you want to know? You really want to know? Well, I’ll tell you…” She yelled.

“Dani…”

“Let’s see I'm living the single life. There, are you happy? Kyle broke it off 3 months ago and it still stings.”

“What?” Joel was shocked. He looked down at the speedometer before looking at his cousin who looked visibly angry. “Why would he do that?”

“I’m not going into that…” She looked back at the scenery. “I didn’t cheat on him.”

“Did he cheat on you? I’m going to kick his ass….” Joel felt annoyed at Kyle for breaking her heart. “How could he do that to you?”

“He didn’t cheat on me, Joel.” She muttered. “Things happened and I bumped into him in San Fran airport. We talked about everything and we both decided to give it a break. What happened between us is something we’ll take to the grave.”

“Wow….are you okay?”

“No, I’m not but I’m going to live my life and move on. He still loves me and I still love him but it’s the way it is.” Daniela looked up. “So how was New York?”

“Ahhh Chris and Courtney bailed.”

“They hooked up? Gross.” Her mood was still angry and grumpy. “What does he see in her? It’s typical. The girl that is the nicest and the less offensive will always get the guy like some stupid movie because we live in a world where it’s good versus evil.”

“She’s nice and sweet.”

“And I’m some damaged bitch? I know I made my mistakes, Joel. I slept around but why is that being used against me when I’m against her. You know what, I don’t care…” Daniela ranted. “I know that ex-boyfriend loved me more than her. He fell for her image but he fell for who I am and that’s more important than being some fucking fake.”

“You know I’m dating Gisela.”

“What?” Daniela glared at him. “Great even more bad news. I find out that Courtney is dating Chris who I thought I respected, and now you’re dating my ex-boyfriend’s sister….”

“What did she do to you?” Joel raised his tone. "You've been bitchin' about Gisela for a while."

The dark haired teen started to calm down by taking a couple of deep breaths. “It’s fine. I’m sorry, it's not my place. So how did you and Miss Muller hook up?”

“Well…” He started to explain as they stopped at a traffic light. “You know since Bette and Sean live in NYC, we decided to take a road trip but Courtney and Chris bailed. We still decided to continue and one thing led to another. I thought it would be a fling like Katherine but she and I wanted something more like you and Kyle did. You guys had something special.”

“Why would you even…” Daniela glared at him.

“Sorry but we both wanted a relationship. Kind of hope she won’t ditch to me another place,” He joked. “It’s a bit weird because we know each other so well.”

“I can imagine. I have nothing against Gisela but her roommate…”

“I know Dani, we all know.”

"She started it."

Joel rolled his eyes. He heard way too much from both of them bitching about the other. They were close enough to reach the apartment.

Joel and Daniela noticed the Jaguar stationary at the apartment parking lot. “Chris is back a lot earlier than I ETAd…” He took out his keys while Daniela’s bags were on the floor. He opened the door and immediately the first thing he saw when he opened the door was a woman in a light two piece bikini with her light brown hair tied up in a ponytail. “Ummm hi?”

Daniela took a peek from under Joel’s arm while holding two of her bags. “That’s not Gisela or she got a lot of work done.”

“Hi!” The woman happily greeted.

“Ummm…okay….” Joel looked carefully at her. “Excuse me for asking this but who are you and how did you get in here?” He asked as he and Daniela walked inside the apartment.

“I’m Elizaveta Medvedova, I am girlfriend of Chris Ambrose.” She said as she slowly yet seductively peeled a banana. “You must be the others.”

“Yes, we are the others.” Daniela replied as she shot a surprised yet amused look at Joel. “I’m Daniela Cooper and this is Joel Harris, we are friends and roommates. So we kind of live here.”

“That is nice.”

“Are you from Russia?” Joel asked as he went to get the last of Daniela’s bags. “Or somewhere near the country?”

“I am from St. Petersburg. It’s a pleasure to meet you.”

"Russian..." Daniela whispered.

“Hey guys, I’ve seen you met Elizaveta. Man, I met her in San Fran, totally crazy. Oh hey Dani,” Chris wearing only a pair of blue board shorts greeted the woman. “Nice hair. How’s the trip and Dundee?”

“Trip was fine,” She got up. “I’m going take a shower.” She grumbled as she stomped off to the bathroom.

“What’s up with her?” Chris asked as he watched Elizaveta walked to his room. “She seems moody. Must be the jet lag.”

“Yeah, it’s the jet lag.” Joel chuckled as he threw a bag at Chris.

“I don’t know…” Chris pondered out loud. “I think something happened like something super big….” Maybe Chris was going to hit the nail in the head. “Like food poisoning.” Or not.

“She's single. Mutual break up,” Joel explained with his own reasoning as he opened the fridge to take out a bottle of orange juice. “Don’t mention anything about it. If she wants to talk about it, let her but don’t push her.” He ordered his best friend as he started to pour himself a glass of orange juice. “So where did you meet her?”

“In San Fran, she needed some help with directions and I gave her directions…”

“In your pants?”

“No…yes....Anyway turns out she’s a model in LA. Now how cool is that?” Chris beamed like he accomplished something worthwhile.

“Ah huh....” Joel took a quick scull of his orange juice. “What happened to Courtney?”

Chris’ happy expression turned to a cross between anger and disappointment. “She didn’t call or talk to me. Whatever, I can’t believe I fell for her. Can’t believe I liked her but she’s probably with that loser or something because of her parents, so whatever. Now if you excuse me…” He said as he saw Elizaveta walking towards him, “We are hitting the beach.”

“You guys have fun and not in front of the children.”

"Jerk."

--------------------

Location: Santa Monica:

“The answer is no.”

Gisela was standing near a bookshelf in their Santa Monica house. She sighed as she saw Courtney looking very disappointed. “I’m totally not letting you move out because?”

“My Mom and Dad say it will be better for me because… “Courtney had arrived back from Louisiana after a long trip with her parents and Carl’s family. Her mother and Carl wanted her to move out because of her history with all her friends.

“I’m totally going to stop you there,” Gisela pulled out plastic green chair and sat on it. “We’ve so gone through this with your mother. Why like change?”

“Because Carl…”

Gisela interrupted her red haired friend. “Wait like a sec. You picked Carl over Chris? Why? The guy is a total loser.”

Courtney sighed as if she was relegated to the fact that she would have to explain everything. “I tried calling up Chris for help but he wasn’t around and then Carl was there for me and he helped me and I picked him. He makes me feel smart, Ella. My last boyfriend made me feel like he was too smart for me.”

“Like how?” The blonde teenager automatically asked but realized with a sigh that it was a stupid question to ask.

“Because he understands art and makes me feel like my opinions are smart and stuff. I know it’s not me. I know I’m not some art critic or music critic or someone who enjoys reading stuff from the 1800’s or Hemingway but it’s nice to feel like I can.”

“So basically you’re lying to yourself and like him?” Gisela shook her head. “Great choice…”

“You don’t have be mean about it.” Courtney pouted. “I know you hate him but can you please be happy for me? I really like him.”

Gisela gave up and with a groan accepted her best friend’s request. “Fine but I’m not going to pretend that I like him.” The blonde teen changed the conversation to “I totally have big news.”

“What?” the red hair teen asked as she got up and laid down on their couch. “Something happened?”

“I'm like seeing someone.” She coyly remarked. "He's cute, nice and sweet."

“Oh my god!!!” Courtney squealed in delight. “That's really cool but who is he?”

“It’s Joel.” Gisela was beaming and her big smile showed it.

“Joel? As in Joel Harris? How did…New York?”

“Yeah it was kind of totally like those wistful Hollywood romances. It was so totally romantic….” The blonde teen cooed.

“I knew it will happen!” Courtney squealed until she realized something “I was right about something.”

"Scary stuff."

"Yeah..." Courtney missed the snark. "Hey...that was mean."

Location: Madison, WI:

Alicia and Will were sitting it the apartment, flicking playing cards into a hat. “Shouldn’t we pick up Kyle?” asked Will as he looked at Kyle’s keys to his Ferrari. “I’m going to miss driving that car.”

“Why don’t you buy it off him?” Alicia asked. She came back from a trip to Toronto with family. “He’s rich enough to buy another car and it will kind of help him.”

“Maybe you’re right. I’ll ask him when he gets back.”

“When I get back what?” Kyle opened the door. He was holding several bags and suitcases on his shoulder and hands. “What up people?”

“Nothing except how was the trip and can I buy your Ferrari off you please?” William asked as he greeted Kyle with a handshake. "How are you, man?"

Kyle pulled down his sunglasses. “Eh….sure why not but I need the cash first. Hey…” He hugged Alicia before dropping his bags on the ground. “The trip was good. I did a lot of walking, hiking, climbing and stuff, so I’m fitter than ever before. Not much else happened.”

“How’s Francesca?” Alicia asked coyly as she knew the history between the pair.

“Didn't talk to her at all,” The brunette teen laid down on the couch. “Kind of strange...” He covered his mouth as he yawned widely.

“Because you’re with Dani, right?” Alicia asked as the pair resumed their card throwing game.

“Not exactly…” Kyle remarked. “She and I broke up 3 months ago and no she didn’t cheat on me and I didn’t cheat with her.”

“Ahhh sorry dude…” Will apologized like he was offering his condolences. “What happened?”

“Things happened. Rather not go into it at all since I'm fucking buggered. I’m going to call make a phone call.” Kyle picked up the phone and Will mouthed a ‘Wow’ to Alicia who responded with her eyes wide in shock with a slight nod of the head. The Australian Swiss dialled away and immediately reached….

Gisela speaking.”

“What up? I'm back in the US of A.”

“You’re like back home safely?”

“Just wanted to tell you. So ummm yeah what's been happening?”

Kyle, I have some like interesting gossip.” Gisela was starting to sound a little more like herself. “Courtney is dating some like weirdo, and Chris is dating some Russian model.”

“Huh….random…..I guess San Fran does that to people.” Kyle was surprised hearing about his sister dating Joel. “Would have thought Chris and Courtney would be dating.”

“It's like a super boring store. Oh and I'm like dating Joel.”

“Well….anyway I gotta buzz the parents. It was great talking to you....The fuck?”

"New York. Super long store."

"Totally?"

"Bye!"

“You too?” Kyle heard Gisela hang up the phone. “Now to call my mother and Jules.” He then walked into the same room and area where Will and Alicia were flinging playing cards into a baseball hat. “You two….really?”

“I’ll get the money tomorrow when the banks are open. I’m really psyched cause that Ferrari is boss with a capital B. People dig it except it was mainly a lot of straight guys, go figure.” Will shrugged as he watched Alicia flick a playing card into the hat. “Wanna play?”

“Nah…I’m still on Euro time. I’m gonna hit the hay.”

“Alright suit yourself!” Will exclaimed as he flicked a card that overshot the hat. “Damn card.”

“It’s nice to have you back, Kyle.” Alicia smiled. “Play some Monopoly tonight?”

“Sure. It would be nice. Jet lag is gonna be a killer. Oh and Gisela and Joel are dating."

"That's a bombshell..." Alicia looked very surprised and impressed. She accidentally flicked a card straight into Will's face. "Guess we have to make do with some take out."

"Lame..."

"At least you still get to keep the Ferrari. It's great to have everyone back."

CHAPTER 62

======================

Location: Madison,WI:

It was a new day, a new year at UOW. It was sunny, the birds were chirping, the crowd was groaning and the wind was making things pretty chilly. Kyle and Will were walking from the parking lot to the campus. “Man, another whole year of this.”

“Could be a lot worse,” Kyle remarked. “Anyway think about it this way. It’s going to be a lot harder than last year.”

“Thanks…” Will chuckled sarcastically. “So now that I have the liquid to buy the Ferrari…” They walked alongside a pathway to one of the classrooms.

“I’m not taking the money now, mate. People might think I'm a drug dealer or something,” The brunette male explained. “Just give to me before I go looking for a new car. Man, gonna miss that Ferrari. We’ve had some good memories.”

“And they are?”

“Driving, the power, oh and doing Daniela in backseat.”

“TMI, bro. TMI…” Will muttered under his breath. “Didn’t need to know that. Speaking of which at least you’re single and there are a lot of single women.”

“Yeah, yeah, yeah,” Kyle smirked as they reached one of the classrooms. “Don't stand a chance, mate.” They stopped right in front of the room away from the people exited and entering.

“It’s been nearly 4 months. You’re not in mourning, bro. For some reason girls like Chloe and Daniela like you....” Will surveyed his roommate. "I don't see it. There are a lot of cuter guys out there."

“Whatever,” Kyle rolled his eyes. “I’ll see you later.”

"NBA draft, yeah?"

"Yeah, wouldn't miss it." He slapped hands with Will just before he left to go to his class.

He walked into a building. It was a huge lecture hall with tiered seating. The brunette male moved up near the top and excused himself as he pushed through people. He found an empty seat in the middle of the 2nd last row.

“This seat taken?” Kyle looked up at the very tall man who pointed at the seat. He had black cornrows, a dark complexion and was wearing a black t-shirt and cream chino pants. Kyle could see all his bling around his neck.

“Nah man, free seat.” Kyle moved his bag from the seat.

The man sat down right next to Kyle. “Thanks bro.” He placed his bag down on the ground. “So this is econometrics? Man, I don’t even know why I picked this class.”

“Economics or stat major?”

“Stat but I'm just doing whatever, man. I'm an athlete, man I forgot to introduce myself,” The guy put his hand out. “Donald Slater.”

“Yeah, you’re the guy who plays at the 3. Love how you slash,” Kyle smiled as he complimented Donald. “I’m Kyle, Kyle Thorpe.”

“You’re that soccer player. Man, I don't get that sport but shit is like ballet on roids.” Donald explained. “Man, that would have been tight, you hearing me bro?”

Kyle chuckled. “I guess? So what about you? The next Michael Finley? He’s a baller.”

“Dude is a massive baller, man I don’t know…” Donald smirked. “I ain’t gonna be the next Vinsanity, T-Mac, Kobe or shit. Man, I would kill to be Shareef Abdur-Rahim or even someone like Jamal Mashburn.”

“Man I think you could be the next Grant Hill, you know without the injuries,” Kyle and Donald saw their lecturer turn on the protector and talk about the subject. “It’s all about balance.”

“Is it true you’re English like James Bond?” Donald asked curiously. “That’s the rumor. You sound like it, bro.”

“Nope but I get that a lot. So how about the ladies? Flocking to you cause you’re a baller.” Kyle chuckled.

Donald nodded his head. “Man, they are like flies to athletes.”

“Not in my sport,” Kyle muttered. “In a college level at least.”

“What about Becks?” Donald smirked. “I know one soccer player.”

Kyle raised his eyebrow. They weren’t paying attention to the lecture at all. To them the lecture was just background noise. “You know I'm not British, right?”

"I know now. Where you from?"

"Australia."

"No shit? You flew all the way here to study here? You mind ain't fucked right?" Donald raised his eyebrow.

"No, I went to high school in LA. The rich part of LA...." He needed clarify that. "Where you from?"

"Indianapolis."

"Cool."

--------------------

Location: Food Court:

“For the last time Nathan, I’m not interested in you.”

Alicia looked up from her table when she saw a tall male talking to a blonde woman. The blonde woman looked pretty familiar but the African American woman shrugged and went back to her law notes while drinking a coffee and eating a croissant.

“I don’t get you, babe.” Nathan had short brown hair in a buzz cut sort of way. “You said you liked me before we went to college.”

“And that was before college,” The blonde woman with bouncy soft curled hair said to the guy. “Nathan, I told you I’m not interested. You’re just some passing fling.”

“Why don’t you want to go out with me?” He asked her obviously judging by his tone, he was upset. “What did I do wrong? What’s with me? Why don’t you like me?” The woman rolled her eyes at the clingy guy.

She had to find a way to get rid of him and fast. “I have a boyfriend and he’s an athlete.” That sounded like a big lie.

“Oh….” Nathan looked around. “When can I meet him?”

“Never, he's in class.” The woman lied. “Which maybe you should do…” She scoffed.

“Oh yeah….but I'll be back for you.”

"Eugh get over yourself!"

The woman sighed when the guy left. She smiled awkwardly at Alicia who watched the whole thing. Suddenly the woman’s eyes moved towards the coffee cart. “That’s weird….” Alicia muttered to herself as she went back to her book. She was the only one who could hear that confrontation.

It was end of class and Kyle along with Donald walked into the food court. Donald’s eyes lit up when he saw Alicia sitting down and reading. “Dude, dude, dude…” He tugged on Kyle’s black t-shirt.

“What?”

“Look at that hot babe right there. Man, she is fine….” He stared at Alicia. “Man, I should go up to her…”

“Don't you have practice or something?” Kyle muttered. "She's my roommate.

Alicia saw Kyle and waved at him. Donald noticed it and looked at Kyle. “Bro, you hittin’ that?”

Kyle shot him a disgusted glance. “Mate, she’s like a sister to me. That's fucked.”

Donald lightly punched Kyle on the shoulder. “Bro, that’s your roommate? Damn.....You gotta introduce me one day. She's is fine with a capital F."

“Yeah, yeah I will.” The brunette teen slapped his hand. “I’ll see you later, man. Shoot some hoops, yeah?” Donald nodded as he left. Kyle walked towards Alicia who watched him. “Ally, Ally, Ally. What up?”

“Nothing much except catching up on some reading from a book I borrowed in the library. Have you seen Will?” Alicia shut her book as she stared at the blonde woman from the argument.

“He’s still in class. His lecture goes for another hour….” Kyle noticed that she was looking elsewhere. “What you looking at?”

“Just something hilarious.” The dark haired woman smiled. She noticed her roommate moving towards the café. “Are you getting some coffee?”

“Just some tea,” Kyle took out his wallet from his pocket. “I’ll be back. You good? You don’t need anything?” Alicia shook her head. “Alright…”

The woman waited for her order focused about Nathan until she heard a familiar voice. She turned to the side and saw someone that caught her eye. “Kyle!” She recognized from a few months ago.

Kyle turned to his right and saw the blonde woman. There was something familiar about her but he couldn’t put his finger on it until he looked into her eyes. He recognized those eyes. “Chloe? Damn…you look different.”

It was the elusive Chloe Stewart, the woman who Kyle took to her senior prom, the woman who dated Joel for a couple of months. “And you look bigger.”

“Errr...?"

"Muscular." She corrected sheepishly.

Kyle smirked as he got his tea. “I’ve been on a fitness kick. So you didn’t go to West or even East?”

“You think I’m that smart,” Chloe smiled. “There was always Canada but this was close to home. It’s cheaper.”

“I mean…you hair….3 months….” Kyle just stared at her hair. “It’s blonde and long.”

Chloe clasped some of her long dark blonde hair. “You don’t like it?” She felt a little sad when he acted all surprised. In her mind she thought he disliked it.

“No, it’s just different.” Kyle stared at it. “It’s kind of pretty cool. Looks nice.” He held his tea looking and smiling at Chloe awkwardly.

“Oh how’s Daniela? Your girlfriend?” She asked trying to make conversation.

He frowned a little when he heard his ex-girlfriend’s name. “That ended and not well."

She clasped her right hand over his mouth. “I am so sorry.” The blonde Canadian felt guilty somewhat thinking that she played a role.

“Eh life goes on,” He stared at her with a tired look that she kind of felt was hot. “So I better go and join my friend over there.”

“Oh…okay…She looks familiar,” Chloe nodded before an idea hit her. “Wait!” She held on to his arm. “I need a favor.”

“Ummm…” He looked stunned but decided to listen. “Sure, what is it?”

“Well it’s kind of stupid and silly…”

“Ah huh?"

“I had this fling with this high school jock Nathan. He was popular, I was popular, you know the drill…” Chloe started to explain. “Anyway he keeps on saying that I’m the love of his life and he wants a relationship. When I tell him that I don’t like him or whatever, he goes all like super clingy crazy. I’m scared that he’ll go suicidal or something.”

“Chloe,” Kyle looked at his watch. “I’m sorry but I really don’t have time for this.” He felt his tea getting colder.

“Oh right I’m sorry,” Chloe apologized frantically. “Anyway the only way to stop him from going crazy,” She drew circles in the air with her finger to show that the guy was crazy. “I had to tell him I had a boyfriend who’s an athlete and you’re the only guy that I know…”

“IYeah, I can’t do that Chloe,” He sighed. “I’m busy with studying and training and playing. I can’t play a boyfriend and kind of weird.”

“Please? I would so owe you.”

“Nope,” Kyle sighed. “I’m really sorry but hey you look like Alicia Silverstone with darker hair. It’s kind of righteous.”

“Ohh….” She looked around in disappointment. “It’s great seeing you and thank you.” She at least smiled at his complement.

Kyle smiled as he walked back to Alicia. “Already moving on to Blondie.” She teased him. “You move fast, Kyle.”

“That’s Chloe Stewart.”

“The Chloe Stewart? The girl who dated Joel. She's blonde?”

“The very same.” He nodded. “She’s having trouble with some guy and she wanted me to help her. I declined.”

“Why?” She looked down at her book. “That guy was really annoying her. You could really help her.”

“Because she wants me to pretend to be her boyfriend,” He sighed after he took a sip from his tea. “I’m not ready for that. It’s been like 3 months since I broke up with Dani and it still hurts.”

“Kyle, Dani didn’t die,” Alicia realized how stupid her roommate was acting. “You’re just helping the girl by getting a guy off her back. You’re being a pretend boyfriend.” She emphasized the word ‘pretend’. “After that you’ll be scot free.”

“Nope”

“She needs your help,” Alicia exclaimed as she poked at her butter croissant. “Judging by her argument with Nathan, who knows what he might do.”

“How do you know his name?”

“She said it a couple of times. I was right next to her telling him basically to give her space and leave her alone. The guy will go into harassment stalker territory if you don’t help her.” Alicia sliced her croissant with a plastic knife and fork.

“Eugh...” He gave up. "Fine...."

Location: California:

Joel Harris was walking alongside his cousin, Daniela Cooper along a path way to campus. “My back is really killing me.”

“I told you not to play football,” Daniela sighed. “But did you listen to me? No.”

“Thanks for your sympathy…” He growled as he rubbed his lower back with his hand.

Daniela sighed as she held her architecture book to her chest. “My pleasure.” The rest of her stuff was in her bag as the dark haired teen stared at the two girls walking slowly in front of her. “Can they walk any slower?” She grumbled.

“Relax, Dani…”

“You relax…”

“Hey Joel!” Tina Baines walked up to her ex-lover and Daniela. “Are you thinking about continuing your political career?”

“I thought about it and kind of not my thing. The whole dirtiness about it, I don’t know.” Joel remarked to the black haired reporter. “I’ll give it a pass.”

“What about reporting?”

“Not my thing.” Joel casually remarked as he looked at Tina. “Finance sounds a lot more interesting.”

Daniela rolled her eyes. “You’re doing business, right?” Tina asked him as she flicked her black hair. “There is a business society that might interest you. It would be a bonus for you.”

Joel mulled over the idea. “That actually sounds like a good idea.” He wasn’t doing much. His girlfriend was part of the science society, Daniela was in a sorority and he was in nothing. “Could you help me with that?”

Tina nodded without hesitation. “Sure. You’re a friend even if we did sleep together. Sorry about that.”

"I already knew," Daniela looked at the sky. "I'm outtie. It's nice meeting you." She greeted Tina before walking away.

Joel shrugged “Anyway I’m dating someone now, so it’s nice to be in a relationship where I know she won’t leave the country.” He chuckled. “So you wanna grab something to eat?”

Tina looked at her watch on his right wrist. “I got 45 minutes to spare.”

"Sure."

Elsewhere:

Chris Ambrose was swinging away trying to back into the swing of things with his baseball. He tapped his cleats with his bat trying to clean up any dirt and mud stuck to the bottom before adjusting his helmet and fixing up his gloves. He was in a weird relationship with the Russian model Elizaveta after he found out that Courtney decided to pick Carl Miller over him. The worst part was that all 3 of them went to the same school.

The first ball shot out of the pitching machine as Chris swung as got the top edge of the bat. The second one caught the bottom of the bat. Every single hit was coming off bad. Chris knew it was a lack of concentration and a lot of pent up anger. He knew why and it was made even worse when he stepped outside of the cage.

“Hi.” Courtney greeted him. He glared at the bubbly red haired teen before tossing his bat and helmet on the ground. His blonde hair was all sweaty and all over the price. There were no words as he took off his gloves and placed them on his bag. “I know you’re upset with me and you should be.”

“I have nothing to say.” He bent down to put all his stuff in his bag. Chris threw his bag on to his shoulder before walking away from Courtney.

“Chris!” She followed him. “If you can just hear me out….I can explain.”

“Explain what? I liked you and I wanted to be with you but you picked him.” He muttered to her with his back towards her.

“But it was tough.” Courtney pleaded with him. “I didn’t mean to hurt you. I tried calling you but you never picked up.”

“And you didn’t even call me on my cell phone, so whatever Courtney.” He really didn’t want to talk to her.

“I know, I know. I should have.”

“You picked him over me. I thought I was your friend and I meant something to you.”

“You are…and you do”

“Yeah well I thought I knew you. I guess I was wrong.” Chris walked away. “Have fun Courtney.”

Location: The LA Apartment:

“So I joined the college’s business society. The stuff and opportunities they have…oooft.” Joel was in the apartment along with Chris, watching television and snacking on chips. “I think I'll have a pathway to a good job.”

“That sounds great, man.” Chris said with his mouth full of chips, a few pieces spat out from his mouth. “Man, Courtney tried to talk to me, bro. It was the worst. I can’t believe she picked that freak over me.”

“Did she say why?”

“Get this because I didn’t pick up our phone when I was out in a team function,” Chris stuffed his face with more chips. “I think Dundee was right. Her parents introduced him to her, so whatever. I have Elizaveta. Isn’t that right, babe?”

“Huh?”

“Nothing, babe. Nothing important.” Chris smiled as the woman came and sat down on his knee. Chris mouthed to his best friend ‘She’s so damn hot’. He put his arm around her. “Wait till you taste Daniela’s cooking. It’s like the best thing ever. How come she’s not going to be a chef?”

“She wants to be an architect. I told her several times for her to go into culinary school and stuff but she tells me to fuck off,” He explained. “She’s at a sorority meeting at the moment. Apparently she’s a big wig there now. Hannah’s sister put in a good name for her.” Joel actually did the work since he and Katherine had a sexual relationship. “It would be pretty cool to know a head of a sorority.”

“Yeah imagine all the perks and the parties. But now we watch the Olympics.”

“Next at Sydney 2000.”

“I wonder if Thorpe has gone crazy about not being there for it.”

------------------------

Location: Madison:

"I wish I was there..." Kyle sighed as he held on the TV like a weirdo inside a car salesroom

“I don't know what's more weird you bumped into Chloe or you hugging a TV…”

Will and Kyle were at car salesroom looking for cars obviously. There were several cars, all glistening and bright, some beautiful, some chic and some just plain looking. All the sunlight from the glass windows reflected on to the cars making them glistening like they were shiny. “Yeah I saw Chloe. It’s like she was a new person.”

“Elaborate?”

“Well,” Kyle explained as he looked at an average sedan. “She has long dark blonde hair or it’s light brown. I don’t know but it’s like a model, you know. She just looks like a different person.”

“Did she have a boob job or any work done?” Will asked as he sat down on a comfy office chair with wooden arm rests.

“No work done…” He replied as he sat down next to him. “I didn’t check her boobs though. She was having trouble with this guy and she wanted my help to pretend to be her boyfriend.”

William nodded “I know. Alicia told me all about it. I can’t believe you didn’t help her. The guy sounded like a total creep. Should have helped her.”

“Why couldn’t you?” Kyle looked at him with a little smile.

“Let’s list the reasons.” Will raised three fingers on his right hand. “One!” He touched his index finger. “I’m not an athlete. Two,” He pointed at his middle finger. “I’m gay. I can’t pretend to be her boyfriend. Man, I can’t even get a boyfriend…..”

“You want me to be your wingman?”

“Gross,” William pointed at his ring finger. “And lastly I don’t even know her. Now let’s look for that car. I don’t know anything about cars…I know media stuff and sport.”

“Welcome to my world…”

“This wait is pretty bad.”

“I don’t know about that…” Kyle put his head on his left hand. “There was the time you played Bollywood music 2 days straight. I still don’t get that.”

“The movies or the songs?” Will was swinging his feet like a pendulum.

“The movies. They dance in the most random places ever,” He scrunched his face in confusion. “What’s the point of that?”

“Kyle, you don’t want to know.”

“I actually do. Not like we’re doing anything productive.” He shrugged. “So what’s the deal? Is it like their version of a make out or sex?”

Will thought about it for a second. “I don’t know. I guess so but it could be like musicals and stuff. A throwback to yesteryear of MGM musicals with Gene Kelly and Judy Garland. I also guess it would be since a lot of India is poor, a way to show them a colorful world or something. A lot of people wouldn’t be able to travel that much, so I guess it is way to escape and stuff.”

“Huh….” The brunette man thought about what his roommate said. “That actually makes sense. It really does.” He got up from his chair and started to walk away.

“Wait!” Will called out to him when he heard the doorbell. “Where are you going?”

“To take a shit,” Kyle called back. “Just stall or something.”

“How the hell am I supposed to do that?” He asked himself before “Oh hello!” He saw an attractive guy in a suit and tie who was obviously a salesman. He had black hair perfectly combed like he was from the 60’s, he had a chiseled face and looked like he was really fit. “Stalling time.”

---------------------

Later:

Kyle sighed as he received a message from his parents. Julien and Olivia were at the Olympics in Sydney, Australia. He pulled over in his new red Honda S2000 Convertible. It was night time and after being lectured by Alicia, the man dressed in a black muscular t-shirt and dark blue jeans with spiky dark brown hair jumped out his S2000 Convertible. He locked the car and spun the keys around his finger.

“I’m not interested Nathan.” Chloe dressed in a black neckline halter sighed as she was just finishing up work at an Italian restaurant. Her lovely dark blonde hair sometimes mistaken for light brown, was tied up in a ponytail and she walked out with Nathan following her. “I have a boyfriend.”

“How come I never see him?” He asked her. “I love you Chloe Stewart. I’m trying to be polite and nice to you. I think I could be a really good boyfriend.”

Chloe sighed “Look, enough of this…”

“No…” Nathan interrupted her. “Don’t say that. I’m not going to be friend zoned. Just imagine the great relationship we can have. I love you and I’ll do anything for you.”

Chloe was about to admit defeat so he could stop pestering her until…”Am I interrupting something?” Her brown eyes lit up when she saw Kyle.

“What are you doing here?” Chloe whispered.

“Just work with me here…” He whispered. “I’m winging it.”

“Ummm…” Nathan stared at Kyle. He felt 2 feet tall next to the tall, attractive and muscular male right in front of him. “Actually I’m sorry but you kind of were.”

“Nathan, this is Kyle.” Chloe introduced him.

“Hi.” Kyle shook Nathan’s hand with a very tight grip.

“And he’s….mmm….” Chloe’s eyes closed when she felt Kyle’s lips pressed against her’s. Her heart fluttered, it felt like absolute heaven even if he wasn’t that good of a kisser.

“So you’re ready to go for that movie, Chloe?” Kyle smiled as he put his arm around Chloe while staring at Nathan.

“Ummm…yeah….sure…He's my boyfriend.” She pointed nervously.

“Oh, oh…” Nathan finally took the hint. “I’m so sorry for everything. I thought she was lying about the boyfriend thing. I am so sorry.” He quickly retreated leaving the pair alone.

“That's all it took? I could have done this a lot earlier..." She sighed before facing Kyle. "Thank you so much…” Chloe smiled. “It really meant a lot to me.”

Kyle smiled. “Hey it’s okay. I didn’t know you worked here. You need a lift back home or something?”

“Oh, oh no I’m fine.”

“Alright, I’m gonna bail,” Kyle twirled his car keys in his right index finger. “I’ll see you later.”

Kyle left leaving a stunned Chloe. “Wow…” She mouthed as she felt her heart flutter. She never had a kiss that felt so good in her life.

---------------------

Later: At the Madison Apartment:

It was 2 am in the night as Kyle sat at home watching ‘Scooby Doo: Zombie Island’ on VCR while drinking some tea.

A groggy William walked into the room. “Hey…?”

“Hey.” Kyle lowered the volume. “Too loud?”

“No, no…what are you doing still awake?” Will sat down while scratching his hair. He looked at all the video cassettes on the table. “Muppet Treasure Island? The Three Caballeros? Do I want to know?” He looked at the screen. “Hey Scooby Doo. They changed.”

“Apparently they gotten older and jobs and stuff,” Kyle remarked with a shrug. “I think Daphne and Fred are dating instead of actually sneaking around and doing it.”

“My mom thought Fred was gay.” Will shrugged. “I always thought he was doing Daphne but I guess because he was void of personality, they just plastered him as gay. Love the hair style of Daphne, very Bacall and Hayworth.”

“Yeah and there’s some brunette named Lena that Fred is keen on but Daph isn’t jealous. I don’t know maybe she’s very secure that her boyfriend wouldn’t stray. She probably controls him.”

“With a body like that, I’m surprised no girl could resist Fred.” Will remarked as he put an aqua colored blanket over his legs and feet. “Yes, I know I thought he was gay but c’mon if the brunette girl likes him then you know. Probably get a love triangle.”

“Yeah, so Scooby and Shaggy were airport custom officers, Daphne and Fred made a TV show together and Velma runs a bookstore,” Kyle explained. “So I helped Chloe. Got that guy away from him.”

“Alicia can be very persuasive when she lectures you. How did it go?”

“I got him off her back. It seemed to work and that’s it.” He shrugged. “She’s fine, I’m fine and everyone wins.”

“You did your good deed of the day.”

“Yeah…” Kyle pulled out 2 cassettes. “I rented some Bollywood if you’re keen.”

Will moved his eyes side to side before replying with an enthusiastic “Hell yeah!”

"Alrighty. They have subtitles!"

"Woo!!!"

Kyle put one video in the VCR and immediately wondered looked at the running time. "3 hours?"

"Well, could be worse!" Will chimed in. "Saw the car. Nice and red."

"Ja!"

They both sat down and started to watch one of the Bollywood movies.

CHAPTER 63:

==========================

Location: Madison, WI:

“William?” Chloe rushed up to the Asian male who was walking alone towards his class. “William, right?” She ran in front of him blocking him from entering his lecture hall. She heard a lot of people grumble or chatter away as they walked into the lecture hall for their media lecture.

“Errrr…hi?” Will looked at Chloe while he was holding his laptop tucked right under his arm. “You’re Chloe right?” He looked straight at her outfit. Chloe was wearing a shiny dark blue collared shirt and a white pencil skirt.

“We’ve met before,” Chloe had this knack of talking really fast. “You know Kyle right? Well is he seeing anyone?”

Will was wary, really wary. “Ummm why?” He asked cautiously.

“Because…” Chloe looked around as her cheeks puffed up making her cuter than usual. She saw Will sigh. “What? Oh you think I’m not good enough for him.” She exclaimed. “Oh sure Chloe, that Chloe. She’s all perky and weird. So what if a hot, nice guy who took her to prom helped her. The kiss he gave me was like so amazing. So you tell me what’s wrong with Chloe?”

“Ummm….” Will stood there stunned and confused. “I actually don’t know you. I can ask him if you want. I mean it’s no trouble.”

“Please?” Chloe smiled brightly at Kyle’s friend. “I’m sorry it’s just not many guys help me like he helped me and you know it’s like woah.”

“Yeah...just let me call him.” Will dialed from his cell phone. “Won’t take long.” He waited after a few rings before finally. “Hey Kyle.”

“Hey? What’s up?”

“Quick question and purely hypothetical. Are you ready to date?”

“Ummm…why?”

“It’s purely hypothetical.”

“I don’t know?”

“Alright…I’ll see you later. Thanks, bro.”

"Dude, I'm really confused."

Will hung up the phone. “So I’m kind of going to be late for class

“What did he say?” Chloe asked like she was on pins and needles or edge of her seat. The perky Canadian wondered if he said he was ready.

“He doesn’t know. I mean you could tell him that you like him….” Will shrugged. “I really gotta go to class Chloe. Just catch him at home.” He wrote down the address on a piece of paper and tossed to her. “Have fun.”

Chloe smiled as she looked at the address. “Or I can seduce him. It’s bound to work.” She said to herself as she walked past several people to the library. "He's a guy and guys are horny as hell."

--------------------

Location: The Apartment:

Kyle was lounging around at the apartment with Donald, a new friend. It was just another casual day. “Man, what are you listening to?” Donald stared at the Australian Danish male. “This is some weird shit.”

“I have no idea...” He said as they were listening to some Gloria Estefan. “It's some trippy stuff.”

“Man, she’s sounds weird,” Donald pulled out a beer from the fridge. “What’s the song called?”

“Turn the beat around.” The brunette male replied. “Don't get it.”

“Sounds like something from the 80's,” Donald opened the bottle and pulled up a chair. “The hell is that song about?”

“I dunno” Kyle asked until he realized. “Turning the beat around?”

“The perks of being a student. Discounts on stupid things,” Alicia walked into the house holding a plastic bag full of notebooks. She noticed Donald drinking a beer. “Nice beer.”

Donald jumped in the air hiding the bottle behind his back. “I don’t drink, you know, cause it’s bad and stuff. It was Kyle’s.”

“Ah huh….well I’m Alicia Harrison and welcome to the apartment.” She smiled as she placed the plastic bag on the kitchen table. The African American woman walked up to the fridge and took out a carton of orange juice and a glass from under the stove.

“This is Donald. He plays on the basketball team. He’s the next Michael Finley,” Kyle introduced his friend. “Isn’t that right?”

“Dandy.” Alicia gave a half impressed look before taking a swig of her orange juice.

Donald cleared his throat. “I’m not the next Finley. I’m just trying to be a baller. I’m from Indiana.”

“Isn’t that right? I’m from LA and Kyle over there is from Sydney, Vienna or whatever. Whatever floats your boat,” Alicia smiled. “Anyway I’m going to study, so you two keep it down please.”

“Sure…” Kyle picked up the remote for the stereo and lowered the volume with a simple press of a button.

“You’ve been so moody,” She remarked. “It’s really getting on my nerves.” She picked up her bag and walked into her room.

“So, you’ve met Alicia.” Kyle looked at Donald. “Now you need to meet Will and you met the gang.”

“Bro, she’s fine,” Donald remarked as he plonked himself back on to the chair. “What will it take to get her on a date? She’s like Stacey Dash. Super hot.” Donald looked at his watch. “I better get going, man”

“She’s one of the smartest people I know and she’s pretty chilled, so just be yourself,” Kyle got up and opened the door for him. “Catch you later, mate.” He slapped hands with Donald.

“Yeah, bro. You got any plans tonight, give me a ring, yeah?”

“Yeah, no problems,” He walked over to Alicia. "What's your damage?"

"Kyle," She sighed. "You've been in total damage since you broke with Daniela. You need to get over her and move on. So you can stop pissing me off."

"Blah on you..." He pointed at her and walked off.

-----------------------

Location: Los Angeles:

Joel was on his laptop back at his apartment in Los Angeles. Daniela was out doing her important sorority stuff, and Chris had class. Joel was typing up an essay on his laptop. He stared at the screen as he typed away, each finger making a tappy clicky noise with every button he pressed. His laser like focus was interrupted when he saw a giant white feather right in front of the screen.

“Hi!” Gisela smiled as waved the white feather over his screen.

“C’mon Gisela….” Joel saved his document and placed his laptop on a table. “I’m trying to finish this essay. Where did you get that feather?”

“Eeesh…” The blonde woman threw her hands up. “Work, work, work. It’s always like this.”

“C’mon Gisela, you know how it’s like.” Joel sighed. “I mean you’re all about science and stuff. This is like the only time I have free before Chris’ game. I’m sorry.”

“This is like totally stupid,” Gisela pouted. “What do you expect me to like do? We barely see each other and we’ve been like dating for a couple of months. Joel, we totally need to make time or it’s done.”

“The issue here is that we are two competitive, career orientated people. We need to relax more, I guess.” Joel looked at the digital clock on the table. “But we have some time to kill.”

“Hmmm...” Gisela smiled. “What are you like thinking?” She coyly asked as she sat next to her boyfriend.

“How does sex sound in German?”

“Very hot…” Gisela smiled at him before stopping her tracks. “But seriously Joel, we actually like need to figure this out. Like we can’t do what Kyle and Daniela did.”

“Yeah, every time they argued they would have sex,” Joel recalled after so many disturbing images flashed in front of his eyes. “Then the whole Courtney and Kyle thing.”

“And look like where they are? They broke up. Did she tell you why?” The blonde woman sat back down referring to Daniela.

Joel shook his head and with a little sigh replied with “She’s pretty secretive about it.”

“I know what you mean,” Gisela pushed her golden blonde hair from her eyes. “He’s been totally the same. I wonder what happened. I don’t like buy that long distance bullshit. I know something like happened.”

“I guess it’s something we’ll never find out.”

“They are like a different story,” Gisela put her hands on Joel’s knee. “What about us? I don’t like want to end up like them.”

“I guess I can give you more attention, you know…” He shrugged. “It’s hard because you’re so busy as well. Look at you future, you’re going to be a doctor and me? I’ll be working in a big financial corporation.”

“I know, I know,” Gisela sighed as she slouched down on apartment’s couch. “I just like really want to succeed. Then like people won’t be like this Valley Girl bimbo that shops on Rodeo Drive can’t do anything.”

“But you can,” Joel looked at her with a straight face. “You are brilliant. How many people have the same drive you have? You’re going to be a successful doctor regardless of what they say. You have all of us to support you including me. I’m not going anywhere.”

Gisela beamed when she heard the words of support. “Thank you. It totally means a lot to me. I’ll try to make like some time for us. I really want this relationship to work.”

“I do too. I mean you’re the only girl I’ve felt comfortable with.” Joel smiled. “So you want to get something to eat?”

Gisela picked up her handbag and her shoes. “No doubt.”

“Alright,” Joel picked up his house keys. “You drive.”

--------------------

Back to Madison:

Alicia and William were at class, so that left the whole apartment to Kyle. He started to play ‘Californication’ by Red Hot Chili Peppers on the stereo after he walked out of the shower shirtless and wearing blue board shorts.

He heard the doorbell ring. “Fuck…” Kyle muttered to himself as he threw his towel into the bathroom as he walked up to the door. He opened the door and immediately looked confused. “Chloe? What are you doing here?”

Chloe stared at his chest. She couldn’t help staring at them. “Easy girl. Composure…” Chloe blinked a few times before looking down at a plain white box she had in her hands. “Oh hi. I’m sorry to barge in.” She smiled. “I just want to say thanks for helping me out a few nights ago. So I baked a cake. It’s chocolate.” She gave the box to the man.

Kyle opened the box and looked at the cake. “Thanks. It looks nice. I’ll just put it in the fridge. So do you want anything to eat?” He asked as he went to the kitchen.

“Oh no thank you.” Chloe waved her hands quickly.

“Have a seat.” Kyle pointed at a seat in the living room as he took out a bottle of blood red orange bitters from the fridge. “So what brings you here?”

“Actually I want to repay you for getting rid of Nathan. That guy couldn’t take a hint,” She smiled as she stared at his chest. She didn’t remember him being this muscular back when she was dating Joel. “It really means a lot to me.”

“Huh…” Kyle pulled up a chair and sat opposite the blonde Canadian. “Oh it’s fine. As a friend I’m here to help.” He took a sip of his drink. “You don’t need to repay me.”

“Okay but can I ask you a question? Just as friends, you know.” Chloe smiled as she waved her hands around. She was very expressive when she talked. “What happened between you and your girlfriend?”

Kyle took a deep breath to only muster a little smile. “Things just didn’t work out. Long distance stuff, you know. I mean it sucks because I loved her but a part of me thinks I should move on, you know?"

“Oh…” Chloe’s heart sank. “Oh well a guy like you, girls will be running to you.” She flicked her dark blonde hair from her brown eyes. “I’m still going repay you. I don’t know what I would have done if you didn’t save me. You’re a hero.”

Kyle chuckled. “I wouldn’t say that. Anyway I gotta jet. I’m heading off to the gym. You really don’t have to repay me.”

“Oh isn’t that like a massive coincidence. I’m going to the gym,” Chloe lied but she was pretty convincing or so she thought. “We could work out together.”

Kyle looked down at her outfit. She was wearing a checkered cowboy shirt and jeans. “Ummm…your clothes?”

“Oh…” She laughed after looking at her clothes. “I have my clothes in my car. So I’ll see you there?”

“Ummm…yeah…sure?” He had 2nd thoughts about going to the gym.

Chloe walked up to her car and immediately called her friend. "I'm joking, I'm joking. I'm just messing with you."

"Umm...good one?"

---------------------------

Later:

Chloe’s dorm room was nice and pretty in purple and pink. The walls were all in lavender with pretty perfume bottles on her bedside table, several clothes on the floor and several on her pink bed. She lived by herself as she clutched her little polar bear toy.

The phone started to ring on her table. “Hi Ashleigh. What happened? Nothing happened. I was so embarrassed. I just humiliated myself in front of him. It’s like he thinks of me as the girl who dated his friend or invisible. How can I get him to notice me?”

“Honey,” Her friend said over the phone. “Go to a place where you’ll run into him or invite him somewhere. Then laugh at his jokes, dress hot, dance with him, body contact is very useful like putting your hand on his arm or shoulder, and attract him using your butt.”

Chloe looked down her shirt. “I don’t have an ass!!!” She exclaimed. “I really like him.”

“Why?”

“Because he’s hot and so selfless and he's super hot. He took me to prom and he helped me get rid of that freak and he kissed me,” Chloe sighed. “And when he kissed me, it felt amazing. I know I fall for guys when they are super nice to me but I can’t help it. Can you pick out a dress for me? Oh I have to invite him first and I think I know how.”

"Remember. Just do what I do and it'll be great."

"Oh it will!"

---------------------

Later:

The group was at a party for a political fundraiser on behalf of an invitation. There were several men and women dressed in suits and lovely evening gowns as they danced to the lovely chilled piano music being played by a pianist who was joined by a small trio to make the music as atmospheric and formal as possible.

Alicia dressed in a lovely blue gown with her black haired tied up in a bun. She was waiting for Will to bring her a drink of champagne. “It’s a god send that you decided to drive.” She smiled as she took the champagne flute from Will.

Will was dressed in a white tuxedo and black pants. “Are you going to tell him that Chloe invited all of us? It’s kind of weird being in a fundraiser for her friend’s father. Some Madison bigwig.”

“I rather not but instead I’m going to get drunk,” Alicia smiled. “There aren’t any cute guys here that are single or straight.”

“What about that Donald guy, you know Kyle’s basketball friend.”

Alicia smiled sarcastically. “I don’t date athletes. It’s always a mess. Plus he seemed a little jumpy when we met. It’s kind of weird. This night is about getting drunk. I can’t believe I’m in some politico’s fundraiser. I hate these types of events. It’s all hot air and nothing ever gets done.”

“I’m guessing you’re a liberal.” Will smiled. “So am I obviously and I guess everyone else I know.”

Alicia shrugged. “I have one friend who is a Republican all because of her family. Her name is Courtney. She’s conservative. The rest of my high school group are either liberal or don’t care about politics. Kyle is the latter.”

Kyle stood by the buffet. He wore a black suit over a dark blue collared shirt, black pants and black shoes. His dark brown hair was lightly gelled after remembering the excessive amount that he wore when he was at a 90’s party and in Europe. He yawned after a long day of football training, classes and working out.

Suddenly like a bright light out of nowhere like the heavens opened up and parted the people on the dance floor to the side as a woman with beautiful bouncy dark blonde hair, lightly curled around with beautiful deep brown eyes walked across the dance floor. She was wearing a lovely backless full length red v-neckline dress with a beaded bust and a flowing mermaid skirt. She strutted in her red open toed satin heels holding her silver evening clutch. “Hello Kyle.”

“Chloe….” He couldn’t help but be captivated. She looked absolutely beautiful. “Ummm….you look...” The brunette male was speechless. He tried to make facial gesture to show that he thought she looked beautiful.

“Great?” She smiled looking at his hazel eyes.

“Yeah, umm…great. Those were the words I was looking for.” Kyle was still stunned even if he did muster a little chuckle. He knew Chloe but he never saw her this beautiful in his life. Her hair was amazing, her eyes were stunning with the light purple eye shadow, her ruby red lips and her mouth was so enticing. He continued to gaze down, he noticed she didn’t really have much of a chest compared to his previously girlfriends but it didn’t matter to him because he looked at her figure, she had an amazing figure and her legs…but he moved back to her lips.

“Well so do you. Ashleigh, who’s a friend of mine, her father is like mayor or something. I never knew.” She said but every single word went through one ear and out the other. Kyle couldn’t help but stare at her lips. He wasn’t a lips person but it was just so inviting. “Would you like to dance?” She asked with a little glance to the dance floor. She saw all the couples dancing close to each other. The man would have his hands on the woman’s hips and the woman would have her arms around the man’s neck. It was so romantic.

“Actually I’m kind of tired, you know,” Kyle rubbed his eyes. “It’s been a long day.”

“Well maybe a little dancing will keep your mind off being tired,” She smiled as she looked into his eyes. “Nothing to do with baking a cake, just you know fun.”

Kyle mulled it over for a second. “Hmm…okay.”

Chloe smiled “Okay.” She walked over to the dance floor seductively hoping that he would watch her walk. She wasn’t wrong as she spun around he still hadn’t left.

Kyle followed her with a yawn not because he was bored at all. If anything his interest piqued up by a million when he was around Chloe.

Alicia sat outside as she texted on her phone. She was joined by Will who held a glass of water in one hand and a glass of champagne in the other. “Thank you.” Alicia smiled as she received her champagne flute. “Can’t believe they cut me off. It is really unfair.”

“The fact that we are drinking when we are under aged is an accomplishment, Alicia.” Will smiled. “So what did I miss?”

“Well…” She pointed at Kyle slow dancing with Chloe, his arms on her waist and her arms over his head. “Looks like Kyle is happy for once. She invited him to kind of seduce him.”

“I know all about it. She asked me yesterday if he was ready to date,” Will chuckled. “She really fell for him after he saved her. She’s been plotting away to get him to like her.”

“She did the exact same thing to Joel back in high school,” Alicia took a sip of her champagne. “Except she wasn’t as romantic then but she really likes him. With all that’s happened between him and Courtney and then him and Daniela and then you factor in the missed deals. It’s kind of nice to see him happy.”

“You’re supporting this couple? Chloe and Kyle,” Will laughed. “She’s kind of crazy. I wonder how much is it due to him helping her?”

“A lot but considering the circumstances, I don’t think it is a problem.” Alicia took another swig of champagne. “I still can’t believe they cut me off.”

--------------------------

Later:

Will after an hour, walked back inside. “Hey, so how are you?” He asked Kyle who was getting a bottle of beer.

“I’m good,” He smiled. “How’s Alicia?”

“Drunk but she hasn’t thrown up…yet,” He laughed. “So you and Chloe. You guys are getting chummy.”

“She’s nice to be around. She’s funny, quirky, cute,” Kyle nodded. “She can dance.”

“So can I couple you two? Kyle and Chloe? We need a name for that.” He said as he poured himself two glasses of water.

“I mean she’s nice and all and any guy is lucky to have her,” Kyle explained as he took a big glug from her beer. “But she’s Chloe and I just can’t she myself with her. She’s just Chloe…”

“Dude…” Will noticed something was off.

“I mean it’s Chloe” Kyle scoffed quietly. “She’s a great person but relationship wise? I don’t see it.”

“Ohhh….”

“Shit….” Kyle realized she was behind him.

“I just wanted….” Chloe looked like someone shot an arrow through her heart. She ran off without any hesitation and accidentally dropping her watch.

Kyle picked her small silver watch. “Chloe, wait!” He called out to her but it was too late.

“You better get her...”

“Look, can you drive me and Alicia back and I’ll drive to her place,” Kyle felt so low and so disappointed in himself. After all the enjoyment of the night and all the nice things, he thrashed it without thinking. “Now I got to figure out where she lives. Her friend Ashleigh is around, I’ll get the dorm room number from her and you get Alicia. I feel like shit.”

"Man, get the fuck over your old girlfriend. That is over," Will scolded him. "She's a great girl and you thrashed her. Get over yourself."

Kyle knew he was completely right. "Yeah, well I'll see what I can do. Feel guilty."

"Damn right you should."

------------------

Later: Dorm Room:

Chloe was lying down on her bed clutching her little cute stuffed lion as she groaned She never felt this embarrassed in her whole life ever. “Oh who am I kidding?” Chloe whispered to herself. “Why would a guy like him like someone like me? I tried to invite to the party so I could get him to love me. I mean look at me….why did I even bother?”

She suddenly heard a knock on the door. “Chloe, I can explain…” He knocked on the door from the outside.

“Kyle, you made yourself clear.” She yelled from her room.

“Could you please open up and let me explain?”

Chloe rolled out of her bed and dried up her tears using a facial tissue. She walked up to her door and opened it. “Come in…” She whispered.

“Here, you dropped this at the party,” He handed her her silver watch. “Here you go.”

She took the watch and placed it on her nightstand. “Thanks.”

“Chloe…” Kyle took a deep breath. “You’re an amazing person and I had a lot of fun with you tonight. What I said was stupid and thoughtless and I felt so bad saying it.” He stood against her wall right next to a framed photo of her home in Calgary.

Chloe snorted. “What was I thinking? You helped me and I just fell for you. I have this problem because no guy had ever done something like this for me and I couldn’t help it. You took me to my prom when you had a girlfriend and on short notice and then you saved me from a weird stalker guy.” She shook her head in self-disgust. “You and me? It was never going to happen. Who am I kidding?”

“Chloe, it’s not you,” Kyle remarked. “You’re a great person, an amazingly fun to be around. You just make things cheerful and you’ll make any guy so happy but I just got out of a relationship in a bad way. I loved Daniela so much and it fell on me. Look I haven’t told anyone this, so keep it hushed.”

“Okay…” Chloe said straight-laden.

“I'm just not over my ex,” He started to explain. “You remember Daniela, Joel's cousin. So, yeah. Just how it is. It was a messy breakup.”

“She betrayed your trust and you were so angry because you were betrayed that you broke it off with her. Then when you went overseas which I guess you did because your family does that stuff but you wanted to patch things up because you really loved her but when you saw her again she decided against it.” Chloe interrupted by guessing the rest of the story.

Kyle was shocked and impressed on how accurate she was. “How did you know?” He asked as his eyes were slowly drooping. His eyelids became heavier and heavier.

“Because I feel like I know you,” Chloe sat down on her bed and held on to her stuffed lion. "Every since we went together to prom. I don't know, I just guessed that you're like me in a row. But whatever, I'll leave you alone."

“Chloe…you’re a great person.”

“But you see me as a friend….” She felt her heart being shot through again.

“Look, you’re this amazing person and it’s not because it’s you. I wished I had feelings for you because you’re special but I sadly don’t,” Kyle explained to her sincerely. “I really wish I could but you deserve someone better than me. I can’t hold a deal to go professional because I have my own issues.”

Her expression changed from sadness to one of intrigue. “Kyle, can you do me a favour?”

“Ummm…sure?” Kyle stood in front of her as the blonde woman stood up right in front of him. “What is it?”

“Kiss me.” She smiled.

A part of Kyle wanted to that throughout the night noticing her mouth. “Chloe….”

“Look I think you have feelings for me, there's something there,” She smiled. “One kiss and if you don’t feel anything after then I’ll leave you alone. Please?”

“Okay?” Kyle accepted with a tinge of giving up in his voice.

Chloe moved close to him as she closed her eyes and puckered up. Kyle did the same as their lips met. Chloe could hear bells and the angels sing as the kiss became more passionate by the second. She broke off the kiss and opened her eyes slowly. “There…” She whispered as she moved back.

Kyle stared at her like an anvil dropped on his head. There was silence between them as they stared into each other’s eyes. “Ummm….” Kyle tried to find words, any words. He spluttered out “It’s fine…I have to go now.”

“Okay….” Chloe opened the door for him. “Good night Kyle.”

“Good night Chloe.” Kyle walked back through the corridors and down several flights of stairs before reaching his S2000 Convertible. He sat in his car trying to piece everything together but he could only think about the kiss and only one thing came out of his mouth.

“Woah…”

CHAPTER 64:

============================

Location: Metz, France:

Right in front of the beautiful the Opera-Theatre de Metz Metropole, the oldest opera house in Europe. The magnificent opera house was beautifully lit by lights and the street lights along the area. There was a fountain shooting jets of water. A male with dark brown hair stood in front while the crowd was piling in. It was like a red carpet celebration as all these dignitaries in tuxedos and evening gowns. There were several limos stopping to let out their guests.

The man dressed with a black tuxedo looked at his gold Rolex. He went up to the ticket booth where a lady greeted him. “Can I help you?” She asked as she spoke in French.

“I have a reservation for a Kyle Thorpe.” Kyle slid a piece of paper under the glass.

The woman was typing on her computer. “Here you are,” She slid a ticket and a program guide to the brunette male. “Enjoy.”

“Thank you,” Kyle nodded with a smile as he walked into the theater to one of the top decks. It was magnificent inside as he looked around. There were red seats everywhere with the old architecture lit up by the bright lights around the theater. It was very classical as he looked at his program. He saw a pair of binoculars on every seat including his.

Kyle took off the pair of binoculars off his seat and looked at the ticket in the program. He walked off to another deck, the highest deck in the theatre. He sat down with his left leg over his right. A woman wearing red v-neckline flowing mermaid skirt sat down in the red seat next to him. She had lovely light brown hair. She cleared her throat “What do you think about romance?”

“Only lovers from Paris know.”

“Chloe Stewart, artist from Paris.” She smiled at him in her thick French accent.

“Kyle Thorpe.” He replied. “So what do you do?”

“The classics. What are you doing tonight?” She asked him as she placed her hand on his leg.

Kyle looked at her captivated by her mouth. “I have no idea maybe you should tell what the French do.”

“Is that all you want?” She whispered as she moved her lips closer and closer to his. “I want to make love to you, Kyle…”

“Kyle? Kyle?” Kyle gasped for air as he fell off his bed. “Oh you’re awake?”

Kyle looked up to see Alicia right in front of him. “Dammit Alicia…” He saw Will walk behind Alicia. “Hey, can I talk to you?” He called out to his Chinese roommate.

“Later dude, I have class soon and I’m going to be late if I don’t leave now.” Will dressed in a sweatshirt and jeans replied as he held a blueberry muffin in his hand. “But talk to me later. “

“God dammit…” Kyle sighed as he laid down on the couch. He placed a cushion right on his face. “I’m not here.”

“Okay, I’m not Will but I’ve known you longer,” Alicia sat down on the edge of the couch. “What’s wrong?” She asked as she pulled the cushion from his face. “I’m a girl, I think I’m far better about girl things than a guy who’s interested in guys.”

“How do you know?” Kyle got up as he put his arms around his knee. “Soo…”

“Is this about Chloe?” She asked coyly.

“Yeah…” Kyle sighed while scratching his head. “See the thing is that I kind of kissed her or she kissed me or something. There was a kiss and now I can’t stop dreaming about her, you know. Except she wasn't naked in this dream.”

“You have a crush on Chloe? That’s so cute.” She cooed.

“No, no, no, no….” Kyle tried to correct her. “Not cute, not cute at all.”

“Oh Kyle, it is cute and she’s nice, a bit weird but she’s nice,” She smiled at her roommate. “She really likes you.”

“I know she does but I don’t know if I like her or not,” He sighed. “It’s Chloe. I mean it’s Chloe. She dated Joel.”

“And Daniela dated Tony, I didn’t hear you making any complaints,” She remarked. “Look, you and Daniela broke up nearly 5 months ago. Move on because I’m sure she has or she would want you to.”

“I know but it’s Chloe”

“Okay, so she is weird but she’s nice and it’s good for you to be happy.” Alicia remarked. “Anyway come with me after training to the mall?”

He shrugged as he rolled off the couch. “Alright then. She does have a hot bod in my dreams."

---------------------

Later:

Location: Madison, WI.

Kyle dressed in a white t-shirt under a black jacket and blue jeans while wearing a pair of black sneakers, waited around at the mall. He was standing right next to a fountain waiting for Alicia. He twiddled his thumbs until he saw her from the corner. “Hey,” He hugged her. “You took your time.”

Alicia wearing a red top and jeans looked at her roommate. “Well, I kind of ran into someone.” She smiled nervously. “And they wanted to say hello.”

“Don’t tell me, it’s….”

“Hi Alicia!” Chloe smiled as she walked to up to the African American woman. She stood still like a deer caught in the headlights when she noticed that Kyle was right next to her. “Oh hi Kyle. How are you?”

“Hi Chloe…” Kyle smiled awkwardly. “I’m good, you?”

“I’m great.” She nodded. Chloe was wearing a white top under a black cardigan and jeans.

“Won’t you look at the time? I have a class,” Alicia looked at her phone. “I’m sorry guys.” She apologized insincerely as she walked away leaving the pair alone.

Chloe looked puzzled as she saw woman leave her with Kyle. “I have nothing to do with this. I’m so sorry.” It had been a week since she last talked to Kyle.

“I kind of figured,” He smirked with a slight nod. “So…I’m going to go shopping or something. It’s great to see you.”

Kyle started to walk away until Chloe blurted out “I’m sorry I kissed you.” She covered her mouth straight away. She made a muffled sound realizing her mistake.

“Huh…” Kyle turned around just as embarrassed as she was. “Umm…it is okay.”

“No, it’s not…” She sighed. “You haven’t talked to me and it’s like you’re ignoring me.” She heard her phone ringing. “Excuse me, please.”

“It’s okay. I can wait.” He said as he stood next to the blonde woman.

“Hi Dad!” Chloe greeted cheerfully on the phone. “You can’t come? I understand…I love you too…bye.” She hung up the phone and looked solemn.

“Is everything okay?” Kyle asked concerned at her change of emotion.

“Not,” She grumbled. “My Dad was supposed to do something with me but he had to bail.” She suddenly looked up at Kyle and smiled like she had an idea in her head. “What are you doing tomorrow?”

“Don't think that's a good idea.”

“Please just listen,” Chloe showed off her cute, puppy dog look.

Kyle sighed “Sure…” He had a feeling that he would regret it.

“Thank you!” She smiled as she hugged him. “Oh right sorry…” She smiled meekly realizing her mistake. “So I’m from Calgary and my hockey team, Calgary Flames are supposed to play in Minnesota tomorrow. I never to get see them because I’m living in Wisconsin and my dad doesn’t want me to go to Chicago. Something about crime and deep dish pizza…” She started to go off a tangent. “Oh right, so could you take me?”

“Don’t you have other friends?”

“None that like sport,” Chloe sighed. “And I can’t go alone and I really want to go because I never get to see them. I promise no date, no scheming, you know just be friends. It’ll be a day trip.”

“I don’t know, Chloe,” Kyle felt uneasy with the whole situation. He didn’t know how he felt about Chloe which made things a lot worse.

“Please? I promise you don’t have to pay for a thing. It’s not a date.” Chloe emphasized the last statement. “Totally not a date.”

Kyle sighed as he felt guilty. “Okay.” He gave up. “What time do we leave tomorrow?”

“Noon!” She hugged him. “Oh thank you, thank you, thank you. This means a lot me.” She squealed in delight. “I owe you so much.”

“It’s no problem.” He remarked. “You don’t owe me anything.”

“Oh yes I do,” Chloe smiled as she hugged him tightly.

“Ummm Chloe…”

“Oh sorry,” She giggled as she broke off the hug. “I’ll pick you up first thing in the morning.”

“I’ll drive,” He stared at her. Kyle found her very attractive but to him it was just Chloe Stewart. “I want to take the car around for a decent drive.”

“Oh.” Chloe stood there stunned. “Okay.” She was a little taken back that he wanted to drive. “I’ll pay for gas.”

-----------------------

Location: LA, California:

Daniela sat at one of the major seats in her sorority meeting. She sat down while the new head was going about the meeting. “So Daniela will be in charge of the party and Monica will be in charge of the fundraiser for the middle school. Meeting adjourned.” Clara banged her gavel. As the girls all started to leave, Clara called out “Dani, can I talk to you?”

“Ummm…sure?” Daniela said as she tried to flick her hair until she remembered that her long hair was long gone. “What’s up Clara?”

“Daniela, I’m a little concerned.”

“My grades are fine, thank you very much,” She explained. “Why are you giving me the party anyway? I’m not even good at parties especially without alcohol.”

“You’ll do a good job, Katherine had faith in you and I have faith in you,” Clara explained as she sat down inside their main floor. The main floor had several chairs in a room full of wooden architecture where there were several paintings. “But I’m concerned about you. You don’t have a boyfriend or a girlfriend and for hosting a party you need to have a date.”

“I’m fine being single, thank you very much.” Daniela scoffed. “I’ll be fine hosting a party alone right here. I’m don’t need people telling me to move on or to stop mourning because my boyfriend and I broke up.” She sighed. “It’s annoying and I’m sick of it but…”

“Dani, it’s protocol. It’s tradition. I hosted a party in my sophomore year when I was single,” Clara explained. “Just get a date. That’s all.”

“Oh I apologize then,” Daniela felt guilty as she heard Clara’s explanation. “It’s just been weird.”

Clara smiled “It’s okay, I’m sorry. I should have explained it better to you.” She looked around. “You have any idea about the theme?”

“Hell no,” Daniela chuckled. “I’ll think of something on the fly. I’ll talk to Tasha."

------------------

Elsewhere:

A blonde woman was waiting outside the campus library looking at her cell phone. “Like come on, Joel.” She muttered to herself with a sigh. “This is totally annoying.” She grew cross for every second she had to wait.

“Gisela?” She heard a voice which broke her distraction. “Hey, how are you?” Gisela looked up and shock of horror; it was her old boyfriend, Alan.

“Alan?” Her eyes widened in shock. “Like what are you doing here?” She couldn’t believe that her ex-boyfriend was right in front of her.

“Oh, we’re here for a game.” He smiled. “What about you?”

“I go to school here,” She smiled. “I totally can’t believe this. You still playing in like Idaho?”

“Nah, I got a transfer to USC,” He explained. “Kind of miss this culture. Idaho is boring as fuck.”

“USC? Like you remember Courtney and Chris right?” She recalled as he nodded slightly. “They both go there.”

“Yeah, she broke up with your brother at that time and he was at prom with Daniela. So give me the gossip.” Alan took a stroll down memory lane.

Gisela went to explain. “Tony is in Pittsburgh studying like acting, Courtney is at USC totally dating this loser after picking him over Chris and then like Alicia and my brother are in Wisconsin. My brother was like dating Daniela for like a year before they broke up. Daniela and like Joel go here.”

“Ahhh, man that’s complicated.”

“I’m dating Joel.”

“Ahh that makes it worse,” Alan sighed. “Man, times have changed. I thought we had something but Idaho.”

“Yeah…” Gisela smiled awkwardly. “Well like that’s how it is.” She politely shrugged.

Alan smiled before his cell phone buzzed. “I better go. We’ll talk later.”

Just as Alan started to leave, Joel appeared. “Hey Alan what’s happening? How’s Idaho?”

“Hey man,” Alan slapped hands with Joel. “Idaho was history, USC right now. Actually here for a game, you guys should come.”

“Yeah sure.” Joel remarked. “Take it easy.”

“You too guys. Have a good one.” Alan left the pair alone.

Gisela growled as she looked away from Joel. “What?” He asked knowing that she was angry. “What did I do wrong? Was it about Alan?”

“No!” She raised her voice. “It’s not about Alan. It’s totally about you being late.” She yelled at him softly. “You were like 20 minutes late, Joel. How can I like totally trust you if you’re like totally late for our dates.”

“I’m sorry but I got held up with some marketing group project. We have a presentation and we needed to get the slides correct.”

Gisela let out a little “Grrr” as she crossed her arms. “This happens like all the time. It’s always like work.”

“I’m sorry Gisela but I’m not the only one here who’s busy,” Joel sighed. “I’m trying, I really am. I’m sorry, I should have been thoughtful.” He explained as he put his arms around her. “Why are we making it difficult for ourselves?”

“I don’t know, I totally don’t,” Gisela sighed as she felt his arms around her waist. “We should be in sync but we’re like totally high strung in getting like work done. We’ve like totally had this convo before. You want to see like Alan's game?”

“Yeah sure, don’t want to waste date night,” Joel shrugged. “Did you know that he transferred?”

Gisela shook her head. “No clue. Are you jealous?” She teased her boyfriend as she held on to his hand.

Joel clasped her hand. “Of course,” He pointed out. “But isn’t weird that we keep running into our old relationships?”

“Like you and Chloe?”

“Yeah…” He replied as he felt a bit hot under the collar. “And Silvia.”

“I remember her,” Gisela’s smile turned into a frown. “I remember Dani telling me that you guys are like more than just friends.”

“She’s not even around,” Joel shook his head. “Why are we worrying about it?”

The blonde woman sighed “I totally don’t know…” as she waved her hand in front of her face. "Forget it."

---------------------

Location: Santa Monica:

“Carl?” Courtney was sitting at her place in Santa Monica with her boyfriend. “Carl!” She yelled out while he was reading a book.

“What do you want?” He yelled back as he slammed his book shut. “I’m trying to read a damn Pokemon guide and I have you annoying me. Just watch some television.”

“What did I do wrong?” Courtney asked as she switched on the television.

“I told you not to spend time with Chris. I saw you watching his baseball game,” Carl shouted. “I try to ask stuff from you so we can have a better relationship but you disregard them. You have no respect.”

“Chris is my friend as well,” Courtney had been having a troubling time dating Carl. The honeymoon period was long gone and he became more demanding about everything. She tried to do everything she could to keep the relationship going and avoiding the same mistakes she made when she dated Kyle. “I don’t think I should have moved.”

“Whatever,” He shook her words off as he went back to his Pokemon guide. “It’s always something with you. You’re always busy.”

“I have a lot of work to do,” Courtney explained nicely. All his insults and belittling was like water off her back. “If I want to be a good teacher…”

“Let me stop you there….” Carl interrupted. “You’re going to be a teacher. What do you need to learn? You know what they say?”

“What?”

“Those that can’t do, teach,” Carl scoffed as he picked up his book. “I’m going home. You’re just being difficult. I needed your time but apparently your work is more important than me and our relationship. I’ll talk to you later.”

Courtney groaned as she heard Carl slam the door. “Eugh…” The red haired woman shrugged it off and went back to her work. Carl would just insult her all the time. She wondered why she picked him. Chris was having a great time with a Russian model. “What’s with the guys and models?” That ship has probably sailed.

Location: Madison, WI

The Next Day:

Kyle tried to sneak away in the morning but to no avail. “Where are you going?” Alicia walked into living room holding a portable hair straightener.

Kyle looked around with a guilty smile. “Going to play some golf with Donald.”

“Kyle Thorpe, you’re a terrible liar.” Alicia looked at him. He was wearing a white t-shirt and jeans and she was wearing a purple bathrobe. “Where are you going?”

“Somehow I managed to end up going with Chloe to an ice hockey game in St. Paul.” He sighed as he jingled his keys expecting Alicia to coo.

“Chloe? On a date?” She looked stunned and bewildered. “Well, well, well.”

“Not a date, not a date at all,” He explained to her defensively. “She’s Canadian and loves Ice hockey. Her dad bailed and I guess I felt bad for her. I mean what’s the worst that can happen. It’s not like I miss Daniela.”

“You really miss Daniela, don’t you?”

“Dammit Alica,” Kyle sighed. “I'm out.”

“Kyle, just enjoy yourself and drive safe and be a gentleman on your date.”

"It's not a date!" He exclaimed as he walked towards the lift.

"Sure." Alicia chuckled to herself.

Kyle went to his car in the parking lot. He got and had to drive to campus to pick up Chloe. He wondered why she lived in Campus and not at home. Her father lived in the same city. He saw Chloe waiting for him at the parking lot. "Hey."

"Hi!" She smiled as she got into the car. “I love your car,” Chloe smiled as she rubbed her hands on the upholstery. “It’s fast and neat.”

“It’s pretty shit,” Kyle replied. He was a lot more focused on the 4 hour drive than making small talk. “You want some music?” He started to fiddle with the radio. He changed from pop to classical to folk and to jazz.

Chloe’s brown eyes lit up. “Oh my god I love jazz.”

“You do?” He looked at her with a surprised look.

Chloe nodded. “Yep, my dad introduced it to me when I was little. I love music, I’m in a band.”

Kyle looked impressed as he went back to watching the road. “You are? That’s pretty cool. I might have to see you guys play one day.”

“Can I ask you a question?” Chloe looked at the steering wheel. “How come you suppress your Australian accent?”

“What? What do you mean?” Kyle looked a quick glance away from the road. “My accent is fine.”

“I don’t know, it’s like you’re trying to suppress your Australian accent,” She explained as she changed her accent. “I do the same thing with my Canadian accent. So could try and talk normally to me?”

Kyle sighed as he spoke in an Australian accent to the girl next to him. “Alright, fine. When does the game start?”

“Australian accents are hot.”

“Right….” Kyle muttered as his eyes moved back on to the road.

“I don’t know but there’s this awesome freshmen party tonight, could you drop me there?” She asked staring at the scenic drive.

Kyle turned the air-con off as he pulled on to the side of the road. “Ok…” He stopped the car and started to stretch his legs. “Another hour to go.”

“Oh….” She finally realized what he was doing. “Oh yeah you have to take a breather.”

---------------------------

Few Hours Later:

“Thanks for a great night, Kyle.” Chloe got out of his car. “I had a great time.”

“Yeah, it was interesting,” He smiled. “Sorry about your team losing 3-1.”

“It’s fine, it’s not like we are the same since the 80’s,” She giggled. “That’s what my father says. Sorry about the kiss cam.”

“No, no,” Kyle recalled a moment in his mind where the kiss cam panned on them both. “It’s the kiss cam. Have fun at your party.”

“Oh it’ll be a blast,” She smiled as she skipped out of his car. “I’ll see you later.”

“Bye.”

He drove back to his apartment. Kyle walked inside the apartment holding the jersey that Chloe left behind in the car. “Hey!” Will was sitting down watching some television, mainly cartoons. “Where have you been?”

“Went to a hockey game,” Kyle sat down next to him. “Kind of a weird environment. It’s not my sport.” He laid his legs on the coffee table with the jersey on his lap. He changed the channel to MTV and was immediately hypnotized by the video clip.

William took heed of the jersey and noted while drinking a can of Pepsi. “Nice jersey.”

Kyle was transfixed on the TV until he heard Will’s voice. “Huh? What?” He broke off his trance and looked dazed, confused and tired.

“Dude, did you buy the jersey?” Will asked as he took it from Kyle’s lap. “Calgary Flames. I didn’t know you supported a Canadian team? You’re worldwide.”

“It’s not mine,” He snatched it back. “It’s Chloe’s.”

“Chloe?” Will stared at him in disbelief. “The Chloe Stewart? You went to the game with Chloe?”

“It wasn’t a date, she paid me back for helping her,” Kyle explained. “Nothing happened except for that kiss cam and….” He remembered all his dreams. “I think I like her.”

“Say what now?” Will just kept on staring at Kyle in absolute disbelief. “Why would you say that?”

“I don’t know….” He sighed. “I keep on seeing her in dreams like a James Bond dream and a couple of sexy dreams. You know with the wiping the sports car with a large bucket and a white t-shirt or one where we are making a sex tape. How fucked is that?”

“Dude, you are freaked”

“It's pretty damn hot,” Kyle got up. “You’re interested in a freshmen party?”

Will put his can on the table as he got up. “Sure I got nothing better to do.”

----------------------------

Later:

The party was wild, a very wild party. There was alcohol everywhere, people making out, loud rock music, a swimming pool that looked crystal blue. Kyle could smell tequila as he walked in. “So this is interesting…” Will muttered as they saw a piece of furniture get thrown across from one side of the room to another. “At least some free alcohol. So what are you going to do?”

Kyle looked around. “Thank god you drove. I need some alcohol for this.” He saw an esky full of beers. “Sweet…” The Australian picked one up. He took one sip of it and immediately put it down. “American beer is shit. The plan is to find Chloe and talk to her. Tell her how I feel and boom I have no idea.”

“Well you better find her. There are a lot of attractive guys around here,” Will smiled as he checked out a few guys that walked passed him. “Thank god for parties….are you still drinking that beer?”

“Hey, it’s free beer,” Kyle sculled it before looking around. “Okay, she’s Canadian. So that shouldn’t be that hard?”

“Oh it wouldn’t be,” Will exclaimed over the loud music. “Just find a girl in a Mountie uniform singing ‘Oh Canada’ with the Canadian flag proudly behind her.” He slapped Kyle over the head. “You know what she looks like, dumbass.”

“Geez, you’re mean…” Kyle sulked as he slammed the bottle on the table. “Can I have a shot please?”

“God dammit Kyle…” Will practically yelled at his roommate. “That’s the spirit.” He poured Kyle a shot of vodka. “Now find that girl.”

Kyle drank the shot and went to look for the girl. He walked around and around not finding her at all until he finally spotted her talking with some guy, some very cute guy. “Fuck…” he cursed under his breath. So he plucked up the courage like he did with Francesca and tapped her on the shoulder. She was wearing a black wrap top and jeans along with it and black heeled boots.

Chloe turned around “Kyle!” She said in shock and amazement. “What are you doing here?” She was holding a glass of water.

“Can I talk to you privately?” He asked as he glared at the cute guy she was talking to.

"Nope, I'm here with this guy," Chloe smiled putting her arms around that said cute guy. "His name is Fernando!"

"My name is Gene..."

"Whatever," Chloe rolled her eyes. "Semantics. See Gene here likes me and he worships the feet I walked in or on or something and he doesn't play games with me like a certain Australian I know and I'm gonna sleep on him."

"You're Australian? That's cool"

"Yeah, thanks," Kyle made an impatient, frustrated face. "Could you give us a sec?"

"Yeah, my girlfriend sees this and I'm dead."

"Thanks man."

“Oh sure. He leaves me too like every single guy. It's like Oh Chloe you're great and stuff but we don't want you cause you're Chloe or we have girlfriends or ex-girlfriends or whatever!!!” She slurred as she walked with him outside. “What’s up, Vegemite.” She looked at him before looking up at the stars that were masked by the cloud cover. She felt a little chill on her face as they walked up to William’s Ferrari.

“Your jersey, you forgot it.” Kyle handed Chloe her Calgary Flames jerseys.

Chloe was happy to see it but was much happier to see Kyle. “Thank you so much and uumphfff….” She suddenly was shocked to feel his lips on hers’. Her eyes closed as she put her hands over his head. She felt his hands running up and down her.

“I like you.” Kyle said after he broke off the kiss.

“Are you okay?” She looked at him like it was a prank. “Wow! I can’t believe it. This is a joke right? Because hahaha you got me….are you being serious? Because I really, really like you and I can’t believe you kissed me and it felt so good.” Chloe rambled on as she didn’t know what to feel. “You like me?”

“Yes.”

“Really? Cause I think I'm pretty drunk or this is a dream. Wait is this a dream?"

“No, Chloe I like you.”

“Wait, if this was a dream...” Chloe leaned in and kissed Kyle on the lips. "Okay....it's not a dream. Why do you like me? Is it because....why?"

"I just do, so you wanna go out on a date?"

"Ooooh let's go camping!!!!"

"Umm....camping? A date?"

"Yay!" A drunk Chloe hugged Kyle tightly. Kyle looked worryingly weirded out but that's Chloe Stewart. "Camping is fun."

"Shouldn't we go on a proper date?"

"Nope and let's drink!"

Kyle stared cautiously. "Oh boy..."

This was going to be a wild relationship.

CHAPTER 65:

===========================

November:

Los Angeles:

A young dark haired woman was sitting on her couch in her apartment with the television on and a notepad on her stomach. She was wearing a white top and long pink pajama pants.

“Hey,” Gisela wearing a blue strapless top and cargo pants walked into the apartment. “Is Joel ready?”

“I don’t know,” She muttered. “I’ve been busy.”

“Huh?” The blonde woman watched Daniela curiously. “Like what are you doing?” She noticed the dark haired teen writing down stuff.

“Stuff, Blondie,” Daniela threw her notebook and pen on to the couch as she got up. “Sorority party planning, Blondie.”

Gisela scoffed in response. “Like what do you know about parties? Your good idea of a good party is like sleeping with some guy and getting drunk.”

Daniela glared at her but smirked when she remembered one piece of information. “So how’s your old boyfriend? Joel told me he was around. I wonder if he is free to see people.”

“Don’t you dare.” Gisela angrily remarked.

“Calm down, Blondie,” The dark haired woman got up. “I don’t want your leftovers.” Daniela put the volume up as she was listening to R.E.M. ‘Crush with Eyeliner’.

Joel walked into the room. “When is the party, Dani?” He greeted Gisela with a peck on the cheek.

“In two weeks.” She picked up the phone and walked into her room.

“She’s been stressing about this for ages,” Joel sighed as he picked up his keys. He had one arm around his girlfriend. “Hey, I’m glad you got time off.”

Gisela nodded with a slight smile. “I know. It’s been totally crazy but like here I am.” She clutched her clutch next to her chest. “Let’s go.”

“Oh right the dinner reservations,” Joel put his blazer on and walked with Gisela out of the apartment. “Don’t want to be late.”

Daniela hung up the phone as she sat on her bed. She had been dialing the whole day not only trying to get a theme going but spreading the word. She finally got through to someone really important to her. “Hi Kyle?”

“Dani?”

“Ummm…how are you?” She asked as she stared intently at her reflection. She sat crossed legged as she rocked back and forth.

“I’ve been alright. You?”

“Good, good. Actually I called you because I’m doing important business for my sorority and I’m planning my first party.” She smiled feeling proud of what she’s done.

“That’s amazing. Wait this isn't the type of party where people swing, right?"

Daniela looked confused and grossed out. “No!" She yelled on the phone. "So ummm….I know it will be a stretch but can you make it?”

“I would love to Dani but…” She hoped that she wouldn’t hear him say no. “I have a girlfriend.”

“Oh just invite her along,” She felt a little weirded out but not upset. She always knew that he would be back in the game. “You and Joel are the closest people to me. I really want you and your girlfriend to come. What’s her name?”

“Chloe…”

“Wait a second?” Daniela stopped in amazement. “You’re dating Chloe? As in Chloe Stewart, Joel’s ex-girlfriend?”

“Umm…no?” He could hear Daniela laughing hysterically over the line.

“Oh Kyle, Kyle, Kyle, well….” Daniela looked at the time. “I like her. I gotta make this quick, you know I have stuff to do. So can you come?”

“Yeah....it's gonna be a stretch. So, really doubtful”

"Alrighty. Well, that's okay. Maybe next time. So I'll talk to you later." She hung up and started to laugh. "Chloe? Oh, that is so funny. What a goof."

Madison, WI:

Kyle was preparing something on the kitchen counter while watching the NBA on the TV from a distance. He heard a knock on the door. “Can you get that, Will? Thanks mate.”

“Yeah, yeah, yeah…” Will went to open the door. “Hey Donald.”

“What up, bro?” He greeted Will with a hand slap and hug. “What smells good?”

“Our chef, Mr. Thorpe.” Will pointed to the Australian who was in the kitchen. “I don’t even know why.”

“Because…” Kyle yelled out from the kitchen. “I’m cooking for Chloe for our date. Alicia is stalling her at the mall, mate.”

Donald’s ears rang when he heard Alicia’s name. “Okay,” He looked around. “I have the hots for Alicia.”

“We know…” Will muttered. “And you’re here to find out how you can ask her out, am I right?” He sat down on the couch. “Of course I’m right. Now the first thing you need to do is get rid of those cornrows.”

Donald put his hand on one of the rows. “Why?”

“Because Alicia doesn’t like them. We watch a lot of MTV together,” He pointed out. “Shave it all off and just be yourself. She likes guys who are confident, like themselves and some shit like that. I never really properly dated a girl.” He shrugged as he walked to the fridge to get a slice of cheese.

“Mate, just ask her out.” Kyle started to cut some potatoes on a cutting board. “If she says no then you tried. There are other girls in the sea and mate, if you don’t try you would never know.”

“Chloe?”

“That was a different story,” Kyle defended himself while concentrating on the knife. “She chased after me and that won’t always work. Well, I hope it doesn’t. Actually kind of the same with Dani and Courtney, I chased after her. Holy crap.”

“What?” Donald looked at the stunned brunette. “Your relationships are fucked up?”

“Pretty much.” He sighed as he went to chop onions. “But whatever. I’m going to have an amazing night with Chloe.”

“In the bedroom?” Will teased. “So who were you talking to over the phone for a while?”

“Dani,” He said bluntly like it wasn’t a big deal. “So she’s planning her first sorority party and she asked me to make the trip. Told her I was dating Clo and she said to bring her along.”

“You’re going to travel to LA for your ex?” Will stood there bewildered. “Am I missing something?”

“Who’s Daniela?” Donald asked trying to fit in. The big tall African American basketballer felt out of place since he was from the East Coast and not around these guys.

“Daniela Cooper,” Will sat down on a stool with a view of the going abouts in the kitchen. “Now listen well as I tell you a story.”

“Oh god….” Kyle cringed.

“Kyle Thorpe was dating a lovely nice girl who has never talked to me,” He looked at Kyle with a face of confusion. “Anyway it doesn’t matter because I’ve never met Joel, Chris and so on.” He noticed that he was waffling along. “Okay well there was a twist in the relationship with the school slut.”

“Oi!”

“Okay, okay, someone with looser morals…?”

“Oi!”

“God dammit Kyle, I’m trying.” He sighed. “Anyway there was this woman named Daniela Cooper who was like smoking hot. If I was straight well I would have no chance but anyway so they dated and he would go to LA and she would come here. They broke up and now Kyle is dating Chloe.”

“And you gonna go to LA for a party?” Donald looked at the brunette with a smirk on his face. “Bro gettin’ it on.”

“Okay, bro not getting it on,” Kyle pointed at him with a wooden spoon. “Bro is playing in LA, so it’s nearby. Didn’t tell her that but whatever. Don’t know if Chloe will come but I would really love it if she does.”

“To play the jealously card? You’re an evil one and here I thought Australians were nice,” Will smiled as he went to the kitchen again for another slice of cheese. “I love American cheese. I would eat 64 slices.”

“Mate, Australian cheese is better. A good breakfast is Weetbix and two pieces of Vegemite toast. Fuck I need to get some asap when I’m in LA. That’s some good shit right there.”

“The hell is that?” Donald asked as he took a slice of cheese from the fridge. “Some kind of Aussie weed or some shit.”

“Mate, it’s yeast extract.” Kyle could feel his mouth salivating. “Oh man this would be better than seeing the fam and Dani.” He could feel a little bit of drool escape his mouth. “Aww man.”

“Are you having an orgasm, Kyle?” Will looked at the Australian Swiss kind of freaked out. “Anyway you have to ask Chloe to come with you. Are you sure Daniela is fine with Chloe?”

“She likes Chloe,” Kyle replied as he got a flying pan and added a little bit of olive oil. “They were friendly with each other when she was dating Daniela’s cousin, Joel. It’s all a bit weird. Everyone dated each other.”

“Oh boy….”

“Basically Daniela dated some dude but Daniela dated Kyle. Now Kyle dated this girl named Courtney who dated…”

“My mate Chris who dated Alicia who dated Joel who dated my sister Gisela who dated Chris and then we have Joel dating Chloe who’s dating me….oh dear lord….” Kyle rubbed his forehead. “We have issues.”

"No kidding...." Will pointed. "It's kind of gross like some teen soap."

"Yeah, no doubt. Man, I gotta pick outside the group."

--------------------------

Later:

Shopping Mall:

Chloe was shopping with Alicia at the mall. “What do you think? Lingerie a bit too much?” The Canadian woman pointed at a lingerie store. “Does he like lingerie? What would he think if I wore lingerie? Would he think I’m a whore?”

“Really?” Alicia sighed as she watched people all around the floor walk around as couples, families with children, friends or just alone, all holding bags from several different types of stores. The shopping mall’s PA played loud Christmas music. “It’s November!” She exclaimed after hearing ‘Silent Night’. “It’s literally November.”

“I know but Christmas sells,” Chloe smiled. She wasn’t much of a fan of Christmas but enjoyed the music. “What do you think?”

“Think about what?” The African American woman asked as she turned around. “Oh lingerie. I don’t know. I don’t think he cares. I mean he and his last girlfriend would screw around everywhere. He won’t think you’re a whore. He dated a woman who slept with quite a number of men. It will be fine, Chloe.”

“Okay!” The women walked inside the lingerie store. “So should I go simple? Or really fancy? I went simple with my last boyfriend and fancy might scare him.”

“Surprised you haven’t…” Alicia muttered under her breath.

"Huh?"

"Nevermind..." Alicia looked at the lingerie. "So this is your first time with him?"

"No, remember when we went camping. Outside next to an open fire."

"Ah huh..." Alicia stopped caring and just nodded her head slowly. "How was the camping?"

"Good but he didn't know a thing. It's like for a guy who grew up in the Outback, he doesn't know anything." She explained with a huff.

Alicia shook her head. "Nevermind...but at least you had a great time."

"We really did. It was so great. I think we could go again."

Alicia made an amused face before walking to a Taco Bell to get a napkin.

------------------------

That Night:

Chloe walked into the apartment with a blindfold on to cover her eyes. She was led into the place by her boyfriend. “Are we close?” She asked as she waved her hands around in front of her body to try and feel around. “Ooh something smells good!” She sniffed the lovely armoas. “You got a scented candle. Sandlewood!”

“Oh yeah it is,” Kyle agreed. He had no idea what the candle was. All he knew was that Alicia bought it a couple of days ago. “I’ll take that off!” He removed the blindfold from Chloe’s eyes.

“Wow!” She exclaimed in surprise when she saw the apartment decked out beautifully. There was a table right in front of them with two long romantic candles, a bunch of roses in a glass vase and two plates of food under a top. “This is beautiful.”

“Well it’s important that we have a great date,” Kyle smiled as he pulled Chloe’s chair out for her to sit down. “I hope you like the food.”

“The smells great,” Chloe smiled as she flicked a few strands of her dark blonde hair away from her eyes. “So…” She clapped her hands. “What are we having?” She was wearing a black blouse, jeans and black heeled boots.

“Our entrée,” Kyle took off the tops from the plates. “Seared scallops on a pee puree and balsamic glaze. Enjoy.”

Chloe picked up her fork with her left hand and her knife in her right hand. She cut up a little bit of scallop running it through the puree. “Wow!” She mouthed as she had a taste. “This is amazing.” She was in disbelief on how good the food was. “How did you learn how to cook like this?”

“Practice, practice and a mother who thought me,” Kyle smiled. “I’m glad you liked it.” He started to dig in. “This is the first time I cooked for a date. You want some wine?” He got up as he walked into the kitchen and picked up two bottles. “Red or white?”

“Red.”

“Joel and I got this from the Hunter when he and I went to Australia a couple of years ago,” He smiled as he uncorked the bottle. “Jules bought it but I took it.” He pulled out two glasses from the pantry. He poured a glass for him and Chloe. He smiled as he gave her a glass.

“This is amazing.” She smiled as the music player turned on. “Classic 90’s soul, this is even better.”

“I mean I know you like alt, indie and jazz but it did something simple and chilled out,” Kyle picked up his wine glass. “A toast to what could be a very fun and great relationship.”

“With a very fun and hot boyfriend,” Chloe smiled. “Salut!” She clanked her glass against Kyle’s before taking a sip. “I love this wine. So…” She said before taking another bite of a scallop. “Did you cook for any girlfriend?”

Kyle took a sip of wine while keeping an eye on the kitchen. “Actually you’re the first. To be honest, you’re my 3rd girlfriend ever. Courtney always wanted to cook and she did badly and Daniela is far better than I am.” He smiled. “You look great.”

“Thank you,” Chloe smiled embarrassingly. “So what’s your plan for the future?”

“I don’t know,” He sighed. “I really don’t know. I was a geek back in high school and I always thought I would go into finance or something but I loved playing sports.” He explained. “But I never thought I was good at it. I mean if it wasn’t for Joel, Francesca, Dani and my family, I wouldn’t think about having a professional career but I don’t think I would be good enough.” He poked at one of his scallops. “I don’t know, it’s hard to explain but you see these athletes and they are so good.”

“And you think you suck compared to them,” Chloe snorted. “I know what you mean. I love music and I learned how to play the bass and the piano but I don’t see a future out of it. I suck.”

“I would love to hear you play,” He got up and collected their plates. “What type of music do you guys play?”

“The band is really just 3 girls and a guy. We play alt music but I always wanted to dabble in Broadway.” She stared at her wine. “That would be a totally amazing dream.”

“Well you know Chris’ parents work in theater. You could showcase you stuff there when we go to New York for NYE. You did tell your father about that, right?” He covered both their mains with silver tops. “It will be everyone. Daniela even extended the invite to Will.”

“Ummm….” She frowned as she played with her long blonde hair.

“What’s wrong?” Kyle asked as he brought the plates to the table. “This isn’t about Daniela, right? She and I are just friends. I mean we do have history and we will always have that but she’s a good friend.” He took off the top from each plate. “And there we have it. The mains.”

“Oooh!!!” Chloe gleefully clapped. “It looks so old school rustic. What is it?” Her eyes just stared at it in lust.

“Duck confit with caramelized apple, mesclun and walnuts.” He explained the dish to her. “Bon appetite! Ugh I sound pretentious. Errr have a good meal?"

Chloe’s eyes lit up when she tasted the food. “This is just wow!”

“Thank you,” Kyle smiled at the beautiful woman in front of him. “So what’s the deal? Is it about Dani?”

“Oh no,” Chloe remarked. “I like her and you guys have a history. It would be so uncool if that let me affect her. I know if you wanted to be with her, you would be with her. I just haven’t told my dad that you’re my boyfriend.”

“Why?”

“He kind of doesn’t like athletes.” Chloe smiled meekly as she took another sip of wine.

Kyle looked at her as he picked up the bottle. “You want a top up?” He asked. Chloe nodded as he poured a little bit of red into her glass. “So any reason why?”

“I don’t know,” Chloe said holding her fork and knife. Her food stuffed with duck and apple. “He likes sports but doesn’t like athletes. Okay, it’s more than that. He doesn’t think anyone is good for me unless they are some straight A student. I mean what a drag, you know.”

“I guess?” Kyle nodded. “Courtney's parents hated me. I think cause I wasn't from America and they didn’t think I was good enough for their daughter.” He cut himself some of the duck. “But that was ancient history and she’s dating some loser, so not my deal. Anyway Dani asked us to come to a sorority party next week. She knows that you and I are dating. You interested?”

“We have finals coming up and my dad would be like Chloe, you’re my only child and I’m not letting go with some guy to LA to party,” She smiled. “And I have a gig but you can go.”

“Nah, I wanna check out your gig,” Kyle smiled as he took a sip of red wine. “We’ll all go. It would great to see you play. I can go to Dani’s sorority parties later. She’ll understand. Ready for dessert?”

“Kyle?” Chloe asked as the brunette male got up and walked to the kitchen. “If I brought lingerie over, would you think I’m a whore?”

“What?” He raised an eyebrow. "A whore? No. Why would you...and you brought lingerie?” He said as he brought two pieces of chocolate terrine to the table.

“I’m sorry, I don’t know what I was thinking,” She sighed. “Great, now you think I’m a whore. Great job, Chloe. Such a dummy.”

“Clo,” Kyle chuckled as he tried to calm her down. “I don’t think you’re a whore. I’m just surprised you brought lingerie with you.”

“You want to see?” She asked as she reached down to her paper shopping bag.

“Ahhh would rather see you wearing it,” He smirked as he grinned. It was a grin he hadn’t had since being in a relationship with Daniela. It took a while to get over her and now he felt at ease. “It would look hot.”

“I really love your cooking, it is so amazing,” Chloe clapped her hands as she moaned when she tasted the rich chocolate terrine.

“Thanks Clo,” Kyle smiled. “Now I want to see you in that piece of lingerie.” He picked up the plates and placed them in the sink. He blew out the candles as Chloe smiled holding the bag. She walked into his bedroom. Kyle started to clean up by putting all the scraps into the bin and the leftovers in the fridge.

“Kyle!” Chloe called out from his room as she walked up to the doorway. She was posing in a laguna blue piece of satin lingerie with a neck high halter eyelash lace and a satin skirt.

"Looks amazing," He smiled. "Now how comfortable is it?"

"Why don't we try it out," She said softly. "Test it."

"Gotta test it." Kyle followed her into the bedroom.

---------------------

The Next Morning:

Los Angeles:

Daniela drove in her Porsche Carrera to USC. It wasn’t to spend time with Chris who was pretty devastated that Elizaveta signed a contract with a New York Modelling agency. She took off her sunglasses as she got out of the car. She was wearing a black blouse under a long brown jacket. Her hair had grown into a long length as she flicked it.

She walked up to the football field where the football team was finishing up training. She spotted someone very familiar. “Alan!” She called out to the big, strong brown haired running back. “How are you? You don’t remember me, do you?”

“I’m sorry…” He looked down at his cleats. “Who are you?”

“Oh that’s not really important but I’m friends with a special someone in your life, well was in your life,” Daniela put her sunglasses back on as she saw the blank look on Alan’s face. “Gisela Muller.”

“Oh yeah,” He smiled. “Man, she’s an amazing girl.”

“Yeah don’t care,” Daniela muttered. “Anyway there’s this big sorority party coming up next week and a little birdie…well basically Gisela wants you to come.”

“Really? Cause she’s dating Joel.” Alan was surprised by this little titbit of information.

“Well obviously things aren’t going well if she wants to see you and I know when my cousin is being strung, actually I know when people are being strung around. So she wants you and if you don’t want to cause trouble…” Daniela had a smug smirk on her face. “You can be my date. I need a date to actually look good. I’m really not interested in you.”

“Yeah, okay. It sounds fun.”

“Great, just great. The theme is pretty simple; There is none.” Daniela explained. “So don’t screw up.”

“Alright. Man, seeing Gisela would be awesome again.”

“I’m sure it will but I’m so out of here.”

"You're a nice friend to her."

"I know," Daniela smiled as she waved goodbye and towards her class. "And you're a dumbass. This is gonna be fun."

CHAPTER 66

========================

Madison, WI

Night:

Alicia Harrison and her friends Kyle and Will were on their way to see Chloe’s band play live on campus. They were opening for one of the hot ticket bands, so image was important.

“I can’t believe Chloe is in a band,” Will said as he fixed up his belt buckle. “You dated a supermodel and now you’re dating a musician. Kyle Thorpe, you have game.”

“You should have seen him in high school,” Alicia laughed. “He was the biggest geek. He wasn’t too bright either. I always beat him in every test we had." She teased as she put on a pair of high heels. Alicia was wearing a black top with jeans and heels.

“God I remember when Chris got crabs from that camp girl,” Kyle reminisced as he fixed up his t-shirt. “Anyway I really don’t want to be late. Can I borrow your camera, Alicia?” He asked looking around his for keys which were on the table next to his cell phone.

“I have it, I have it,” She replied as she picked up his keys and threw it to him. “And it’s my camera.” She glared at her Aussie Swiss roommate. “Hurry up.”

“Oh right I have to pick up Donald.” Kyle remembered. “Alright we better leave.”

Will walked out of the apartment followed by Alicia. “Donald likes you.”

“I know.”

“Oh...well what you do you think of him?”

“Nothing.” The woman bluntly answered. “I have nothing against him.”

“So you’ll go out with him?” Will asked. “I can finally play matchmaker.” He gleefully remarked as he clapped his hands together.

Alicia slapped him on the back. “Don’t get your hopes up, Cupid.”

“Oh don’t be lame, Alicia,” Will said as the trio walked down the flight of stairs to Kyle’s Mustang. “I know all about Chris.”

“And that was a high school fling. Nothing more and nothing less,” She waved it off as she got in the passenger’s seat. “I’m not looking for a boyfriend but Donald is a nice guy. He’s cute but that’s it. We have nothing in common except he’s black and I’m half black.”

“What do you think?” Will asked the driver who was more interested in his girlfriend’s performance.

“If Alicia likes Donald then something but right now kind of only care about Clo’s band...and Chloe” Kyle accelerated hard, showing the raw power of the Mustang. "Man, I hate this car."

"Why?"

"It's shit. It's not even me. It's like some random jerkface."

"You are so Gisela." Alicia laughed. "She's you."

"You're the worst, Ali. I hate you all."

---------------------

Later:

The trio and Donald walked inside the club. The club was dark but blue. A lot of blue lighting was used to light up the place. Alicia and the group pushed their way through the massive crowds of people waiting and dancing. “This place seems a lot tamer than the places we’ve been to in LA.” Alicia remarked as she raised her voice over the loud house music coming from the DJ booth.

“No kidding!” Kyle remarked. “This has nothing on Berlin and Ibiza.”

“Well sorry Mister I’ve been to Europe,” Will yelled over the loud music. “Some of us don’t get the luxury of going to clubs.”

“Mate, you’re from Miami!” Kyle yelled. “The only one with any excuse is Donald over there.”

“What?” He yelled. “I can’t hear you guys.”

"I'm not 21."

They found a spot in the middle of the crowd. The group cheered when they saw Chloe dressed in a short sleeved black top and a pair of very dark jeans. She started strumming away on her bass guitar for sound check. Also part of her band was a blonde haired guy on the drums, a woman with porcelain skin with jet black hair on the vocals and a red haired woman on the guitar.

“She looks hot.” Kyle remarked staring at his girlfriend.

“Man, the chick on the vocals is fine,” Donald remarked until he gazed at Alicia. “You know not compared to you.”

“Subtle...” Alicia muttered because she knew he would go all Chloe on her and it would get annoying fast. “Alright…just one date.” She pointed at him. “If it is not successful then you are done pursuing me. Deal?”

“Alright!” Donald cheered as he hugged Alicia.

“Boundaries!”

“Ahhh shit, sorry.” Donald turned to Will. “So dude where’s your girlfriend?”

"I'm gonna regret this..." Alicia sighed while looking at her glass of water.

“I don’t have a girlfriend.” He answered back.

“Oh bro, that’s okay, man. I’ll be your wingman. There are some fine women there. Holla to them, you know.”

“I appreciate it but I really am not interested.”

“Did some home girl ditch you or something?” Donald asked still very unaware.

“Dude, I’m gay.” Will explained.

Donald blinked a few times. “So you have a boyfriend? Cause if you don’t, you know, bro I got your back. I’ll find a nice dude for you.”

“Wait?” Will stopped for a second trying to take it all in. “You don’t care that I’m gay?”

“Bro, come on, man. Would be a fool to be hatin’ on another brotha. Give me some love, G.” Donald put his hand out. Will smiled as he slapped Donald’s hand. “Aiight.”

A man with a cool looking colorful tattoo sleeve walked up to the stage. “Please give your hands up for our first act of tonight. Tuesday’s Perfume!!!.” The crowd cheered as the lead singer walked up to the microphone.

"That's a weird ass name..." Donald whispered to Will.

“Hi, I’m Ji and this is Lionel on the drums, Bethany on the guitar and Chloe on the bass and we are Tuesday’s Perfume and I hope you enjoy this performance.”

“A 1, 2, 3!!” The drummer called out as a lead in to their set list of 3 songs.

---------------------

California:

The DJ was blasting house tunes, the place was crowded, and there was a lot of dancing, cheering, drinking, talking, hooking up and everything. The party was a rousing success as Daniela watched from the balcony upstairs. She tapped her foot in her black cocktail dress to the beats spun by the DJ. “Great party” Clara said to her. She was wearing a black spaghetti top and jeans. “Where’s your ex-boyfriend?”

“He couldn’t come. He’s with his new girlfriend,” Daniela explained with a cheery voice. “It’s okay. I understand.” She smirked as she watched Joel and Gisela dance downstairs. She also saw Chris by himself and Courtney with her boyfriend Carl.

“That sucks,” Clara stood next to her. “You have a date right?”

“Yeah, he’s gone to the bathroom. Some football player from another school.” Daniela shrugged. She had other plans for Alan.

“Well I’m going hit the floor, you wanna come?” Clara asked as she tugged on Daniela’s arm. “Oh it would do you some good.” Clara dragged the dark haired teen with her down the stairs and to the dance floor.

“This is not my environment,” Carl muttered. “Why am I wearing these clothes?” He asked his girlfriend who was dancing slowly to the music. “Courtney, these people are your friends not mine. I don’t even like these people.”

“You don’t know them,” Courtney replied as she held Carl’s hands. “This is Daniela’s party and she’s a nice person.”

“You’re talking about the girl who stole your boyfriend from you,” Carl remarked as he withdrew his hands. “You are far too forgiving. These people are bullies.”

“There is she,” The red haired teen pointed at Daniela. “Let’s go talk to her.” Courtney dragged a resisting Carl with her to Daniela was moving to the music and letting herself go. “Hey!”

“Oh hey. Thanks for coming,” Daniela hugged Courtney. She caught a glimpse of Carl and immediately glared at him. “You guys made it. I'm so thrilled” She lied. “That’s good…” She looked at the red haired woman. “Can I talk to you about something?” She asked Courtney.

“Okay?”

“Go and leave me alone with these people? You better be back,” Carl called out to his girlfriend. “What am I supposed to do? Hang out with these idiots?”

Daniela glared at him. "Oh be nice..." Courtney said to him.

“Why are you dating that pretentious douchebag?” Daniela asked still wondering the question everyone wanted to know. “The guy complains about everything. He complained about Ben & Jerry’s.”

“He’s a nice guy….” Courtney sighed. “He just isn't a people person.”

“I can’t believe you gave up Chris for him. I mean it’s not about the sex.”

“I shouldn’t be talking to you about relationships,” Courtney shot back. “You stole my boyfriend.”

“Your ex-boyfriend, you dumped him. I didn’t do anything,” Daniela remarked. “He just knew who was better." She smirked evilly.

“And you guys aren’t dating.” Courtney was seething. “I know you ruined my relationship with Kyle. You played him against me.”

“Oh Court, I didn’t do a thing but see Kyle likes a physical relationship,” She smirked. “I know how rough he is in bed. Too bad you’ll never find out.” That was one needle too much. An angry Courtney Watson slapped Daniela Cooper across the face. Daniela gasped as she was in shock. Her hand was on her cheek.

“You bitch…” Courtney insulted the woman quietly. “I don't know how you live with yourself.”

"Pretty easily. Like that slap showed me." She scoffed still rubbing her cheek

“What’s that about?” Alan walked to his date. “Why did she slap you?”

“Because the little lamb doesn’t know what a real relationship is like,” Daniela muttered. “Have you found your princess?” She asked referring to Gisela. She looked around and couldn’t get a glimpse of her. “She should be around Joel. There she is.” Daniela pointed at Gisela who was bobbing her head up and down to the beats. “Go talk to her.”

“Hey,” Chris tapped Daniela on the shoulder. “What happened between you and Dani?”

“I am Dani…” Daniela looked at her roommate. “I think you mean Courtney. I asked why she was dating that geek and not you even if the thought of her and you together is disturbing. She still blames me on her relationship with Kyle. I had nothing to do with it. She’s a bit disturbed.” Daniela was perfect in explaining a story without all the facts. “Go talk to her. Don’t think her dweeb wants to be around. Something about social anxiety, I really don’t give a shit.”

“Oh, oh I get it,” Chris really didn’t. “I’ll go talk to her and explain to her. She picked him over me because she cares about feeling smart.”

“Well the loser doesn’t know her limits,” Daniela muttered. “Let her play some facade until he dumps her but he does seem a bit aggressive to her….I’ll be back in a while.” Daniela picked up on a few cues. Carl did seem pretty assertive when he was talking to Courtney and while no one else would have picked up on it, Daniela knew something was wrong.

Joel was wiping his hands with a paper towel after walking out of the bathroom. He immediately saw Gisela talking to Alan. He watched from upstairs wondering how he even heard about this party. Joel saw a girl standing next to him looking down as well. She had long golden platinum blonde hair as she looked down with her dark eyes. She was very attractive and Joel noticed that. She was wearing a purple bodycon dress. “What are you looking at?” Joel asked with a playful tone.

“Just looking,” The girl shrugged. “What about you?” She looked back up and at Joel.

“My girlfriend,” Joel pointed at her. “She’s talking to her ex.”

“So you’re spying on them?” The girl asked. She was prepared to lecture him but she found him pretty cute.

“I guess I am. He came out of the blue and stuff,” Joel sighed. “He’s cuter than me and dated her longer than I did.”

“I don’t think so,” The girl replied as she looked down at Brad talking to Gisela. “You’re definitely cuter.” She smiled. “And I’m not saying that as a pick up line. I’m Zellery.”

“Joel.” He introduced himself. “So you’re a sorority girl?”

“Of course,” Zellery smiled very proud of that title. “It’s fun having a bunch of sisters. So you wanna stare at your girlfriend and be all jealous or do you want to do something fun?”

“I guess something fun?”

“Good,” She dragged Joel with her to the bar. She tapped away while waiting for the bartender to finish pouring someone a scotch on the rocks. “Tequila shots,” Zellery signalled with two fingers.

“Sorry, we’ve ran out.”

“Vodka.” Zellery ordered as the bartender poured two shots of vodka for Zellery and Joel. “Joel, that’s an easy name.”

“Zellery is a pretty neat name,” Joel remarked as he looked at the shot. “I don’t know if this is a good idea.” He hesitated. He wasn’t much of a drinker like Chris and Kyle. Chris loved his alcohol and Kyle was Australian.

“It is not a neat name,” Zellery remarked. “It’s rhymes with celery.” She explained with an awkward face.

"They named you after celery?"

"Sadly." She chuckled.

“Well sounds better than Joel. Speaking of which, I’m Daniela Cooper’s cousin.”

“You are?” Zellery coyly smiled. “So there’s the good guy like a Brandon Walsh.”

“Dani?”

“Total 90210 headcase. I know.” Zellery smiled. “It’s pretty funny. Saluti!”

“Cin cin.” Joel clanked his shot next to her glass. He drank the shot and immediately felt a burning sensation in his throat. “Man….” He took a while to compose himself. “That’s strong.”

“I know,” Zellery smiled. “Another one?”

“I don’t know…” Joel hesitated as he looked towards the direction where he last saw Alan and Gisela.

“Oh come on, she’s enjoying herself. Are you going to spend the whole night just flaffling around?” She enticed him. “Have some fun. Another round.” She ordered.

“Guess you got a good point for someone who rhymes with celery.”

“Exactly,” Zellery smiled as she gave Joel another shot glass. “Just having some innocent, alcoholic fun. No one gets harmed.”

“Except for our bodies.”

“Oh don’t be like that. Have some fun,” Zellery put her arms around him. “To us. Having fun at a sorority party.”

“To us.” Joel raised his glass and took another shot. “Fuck…that’s strong. Another one.”

“Another round, bartender.” She showed two fingers again signalling two. “And let’s go!” She and Joel took the s
hot. “I love this vodka” She smiled. “How are you doing?”

“Another round!” Joel exclaimed with his speech sounding less in control. “If my girlfriend can have fun, I….” He pointed at the ceiling “can too.” They continued with the shots.

“That’s the a sprite.” She laughed. “I don’t even know what I’m saying.”

“You know you….” Joel with his slurring voice pointed at Zellery. “You look like Christina Applegate with lighter hair. That’s so hot.”

“I do?” Zellery pulled out her mirror. “Oh my god, I do! Another round!”

"I'll drink to that."

Madison:

Chloe and Kyle were sitting in her dorm room as they were watching her band’s performance on the TV. They sat on her bed as they picked out little things after coming back from the club. “You were great.” Kyle complimented as he picked up Chloe’s bass guitar. “I mean you were bloody great.”

Chloe smiled as she got up. “Thank you!” She moved the video camera to face Kyle. “Say cheese!” on the tripod.

“Cheese?” Kyle laughed as he waved at the camera. “What are you going to do with that camera anyway?

Chloe stopped the camera for a second and ejected the tape. “Supposed to give it back to Alicia soon but I dunno I could use it. What do you want to do?” She asked as she placed her band’s tape next to a tape that belonged to Alicia.

“I don’t know,” Kyle shrugged. “What do you want to do?” He asked as he took off his polo jumper and marveled at all the music posters on her dorm room wall.

“I dunno,” She picked up a tape. “Hey! There are a lot of old tapes in here. Alicia doesn’t need them. Does she?” Chloe picked up two tapes from the camera bag.

“No, I don’t think so. Why?” Kyle looked at a photo of Chloe from her high school graduation with her father.

“I dunno,” She placed one of the tapes inside the slot. “You know what would be fun? If we watched ourselves on camera” She curled up next to Kyle on her bed.

“What do you mean if we watched ourselves on camera?” Kyle asked as Chloe kissed on him on the neck. “You don’t mean…?” He looked at the camera.

“Oh come on,” Chloe exclaimed. “It’ll be fun. Don’t be such a prude.” She commented as she pressed a button on the camera. “Aren’t you curious?”

“No, not really.” Kyle looked at the camera with a very confused look on his face. “Wait….is that thing on?”

“Ah huh!” Chloe remarked happily as she took off her top and skirt leaving her only in a purple lacy bra and panties and her stockings and heels. She moved closer to him as she started to undo the buttons on Kyle’s shirt while kissing him on the neck.

Kyle couldn’t help but stare at her chest. “Retro soul hip hop music, dandy.”

“Ah huh…” Chloe giggled as she took off Kyle’s shirt. “So hot.” She admired. “I love dating an athlete. The eye candy.”

“You’re a nutcase...” Kyle remarked as Chloe hovered over him as she fiddled with his belt. “You really are.” He chuckled as she giggled at the same time. She threw his pants over to the side.

“Lights, camera, action, babe…”

Later:

California:

The party raved on as Joel was sitting on a couch with Zellery both drunk out of their minds. “Man, I’m telling you. I’m literally dating a German Barbie.” He chuckled into his hands. “I mean she’s hot and stuff and really super smart but god damn she’s uptight.”

“No kidding. So, so….” Zellery laughed. “Okay, so you dated a professional surfer? Did she surf to your heart?”

“More like caught the waves out. Man, you think that’s crazy Zel,” Joel laughed as he slapped his knee. His voice was all over the place; his thoughts were all over the place. “Okay, so my girlfriend’s brother, great friend of mine. Okay, so he dated this…”

“Joel?” Gisela walked up to him. “Where have you been? I’ve been totally looking around for you.”

“I’ve been here silly. Now have you met Zellery? Her name rhymes with celery.” Joel laughed in his drunken state.

“Are you like drunk?” His girlfriend asked looking annoyed at him.

Joel looked around for a second. “Okay, okay. What happens if I say no?” He asked Gisela. “Oh come on…I’m not drunk. I’m happy. Zellery, this is my lovely, beautiful girlfriend, Miss Gisela Muller.”

“It’s a pleasure,” Zellery smiled as she stumbled. “Your boyfriend is a super nice guy.”

"She thinks I'm dunk."

“Like I’m sure…” She crossed her arms. “Can I talk to you for a second?” She asked as she glared at Zellery. “Could you like leave us?”

“Yes, ma’am.” She stumbled as she tried to find the bathroom.

“What’s up, babe?” Joel said as he put his hands on Gisela’s hips.

Her response was pushing them off. “What do you think you’re doing like with that girl?”

“Just having fun, babe. Totally innocent.” Joel put his hands up. “Just had a number of shots and talked about life.” He saw Gisela’s stern face. “Oh come on, I was just having some fun. You’re the one having a massive conversation with your ex-boyfriend.”

“Who happened to be invited by your totally lovely cousin,” Gisela muttered angrily. “Apparently she invited him and isn’t dating him.”

“Yeah, you wanted to talk to him and I have no issues with that because you’re my girlfriend and I trust you,” Joel hugged Gisela tightly. “And I would never ever ever ever cheat on you and…” He felt a rising sensation. “I need to hurl”

“Ew…” Gisela pushed him away as her boyfriend ran upstairs into the bathroom. She couldn’t help but smile at her drunken boyfriend’s antics. "Oh, oh, ewww..."

Later:

“I can’t believe I’m wasting my night on you,” Carl yelled at Courtney. “This was a complete waste. I could have been sitting with my friends playing Super Smash but no you had to drag me to this bullshit stuff. How many times do I have to tell you that I’m interested in these parties? These parties are for people with little to no brain cells that struggle to make a living in the future.”

“I wanted to go.” Courtney yelled. “Why do we always do stuff that you like?”

“Because, Courtney.” Carl yelled. “You make stupid decisions. You are so stupid; I can’t believe I thought you were smart. I can’t believe I read that wrong. I feel like you are just using me. I better than these fools. Than that stupid baseball player and that airhead Australian guy who dated that whore.” He yelled at her.

“Oww…” Courtney yelled. “Why are you yelling. Why are you being so mean to me? Why can’t you just enjoy the time here.”

“Because I hate these people. We live in a stupid world where athletes and beautiful people have the power. Why can’t you see that?” He yelled at her

“Lay off, loser.” Daniela said as she stared down Carl. “Now! Otherwise I’ll hurt you so bad that you’ll cry to your geek fuckwits. Why the hell are you yelling at her?"

“This isn’t your battle.”

“Oh it is when you called me a whore just now and you called Kyle an airhead,” Daniela walked up to him right in his face. “And when you hurt a friend of mine. Well you just crossed the line. Let go of her now and stay away from her.”

"Butt out you slut.”

Daniela smirked. “Oh this is just too easy. You want to try me? I know taekwondo.” Daniela said as she kicked off her heels.

“It’s over Carl,” Courtney finally plucked up the courage after seeing Daniela stand up to him. “I don’t even want to see you again. We are over.” She rubbed her wrist.

“Whatever…” He threw his hands up in the air. “You’re just some vapour airhead bitch. I can't believe I wasted my time on you.” He ran off to his car leaving Daniela and Courtney outside.

“You okay?” Daniela looked at Courtney’s wrist.

“Yeah…” Courtney sighed. “Thank you so much. He would just get so angry and controlling...

The dark haired woman remarked. “What a creep.”

Courtney looked up at Daniela. “Are you going to tell everyone or be like I told you so?” She asked feeling very humiliated and embarrassed.

Daniela stared at her for a second. “No, no…” She replied. “I wouldn’t do that. Kyle would kill me if anything happened to you. Don’t think he doesn’t’ care for you. We all do even me.”

“I know you do. I’m sorry about slapping you….” She sighed as they talked outside where the music was drowned out.

“It’s okay,” She smiled. “Now come on. Let’s enjoy the party.”

"Promise you won't tell anyone?"

"Sure..." Daniela felt a lot of pity for her. "Women got to stick together."

"You know taekwondo?"

"I lied."

"Oh"

"Have you met Zellery yet?"

They walked back inside.

========================

Abbreviated, belated Summer Awards review.

I did not read all of this story. I started skimming or reading recommended chapters, so my perspective could be limited.

The biggest thing that I noticed reading it is that characters start somewhat fleshed out, but there are almost too many of them introduced too quickly to keep track of. By the time we finally get to know all of them, they kind of all get reduced to the most basic elements of their character (i.e. comfortable with sexuality) in their subsequent appearances. Additionally the time skips get too large to really keep plot threads going, and what we see is almost entirely dialogue without the extra padding to provide a more fleshed out world or subtext.

Daniela almost gets the worst of it. She goes from a somewhat complicated figure to one whose later appearances (that I saw/read) were almost entirely limited to jokes about how comfortable with sexuality she is. On balance, it was hard to really get dug into and invested in any single plot thread or character, respectively.

I think you get the basics of dialogue and characterization. You just need to make a story for those to exist in.
