One possibility I could think of was If a player wanted to drop out or something, they could give their starter Pokemon to another player, "continue on in spirit" as it were.I think it's best if you can find a balance between simplicity snd complexity so that all players can follow what's going on.
On the trading, when I first looked at it I didn't look from a player point of view. The idea seems fine but thinking about it, when would a player want to trade in the first place without abusing it like lone said (trade evolution being a possible exception)
It could come into place when there are more Pokémon in the box and you are up against a hard gym leader, you might want to trade Pokémon so that everyone has 3 that are good against it instead of someone first having to catch and train one. It could also come in handy after one of the players is eliminated, the replacement could trade some easy to catch Pokémon for already trained ones or get a Pokémon from a much earlier point in the game without having to go all the way back.On the trading, when I first looked at it I didn't look from a player point of view.
