I doubt he does that. WCS is not something you can really do "on the side", at least when he's more focused on being a researcher now.
Iris is a champion and is doing WCS on the side, Korrina as well, and I assume most of the Galar gym leaders too. Interestingly enough, in sword and shield gym leaders do have other professions. Milo is a farmer and Nessa does modelling, so I don’t see why it’s implausible. Nando also did both gym battles and contests.

To be honest I think Gary battling Ash is unlikely but not out of the question.

I could see him battling Ash, but not as a WCS participant.

No way am I down with Iris being the actual champion of the Unova region, this comes closer to breaking continuity than anything else which is close to the bone in Pokémon Journeys. Winning a Pokémon league and being the champion of the region has always been different...

Tyson won the Hoenn league but he’s not on Steven Stone’s level!

And what happened to Alder? I suppose they could easily go with the games and just say he retired, but I expect it will never ever be addressed...

I cannot accept the anime giving Iris the same title as Cynthia, super powerful trainer - sure, but this is too much. And honestly, I find it so baffling – I still doubt it is the case. Until the episode airs tomorrow, I just can’t believe it.

And something else I was afraid of, instead of us getting to see the five Pokémon she is already known to have and getting to see them do stuff, we now have the possibility dangling that she has a random Goodra! Because Journeys wants to show of all Pokémon (Even though that’s not something they could possibly do) Goodra is just getting shoved in.

say it with me, love the episodes – hate the series

Excadrill kinda needs to be there to make Iris's position as Champion more credible, since he's one of her fully evolved Pokemon.

Technically Emolga is fully evolved too, but because of the mascot treatment Pikaclones get they can come off as being more on par with basic stage mons than fully evolved ones.

I think her other Pokémon will appear too, just not participate in the battle.

Okat

Wasn't one of Iris' first character developments about her deciding to take it easy? Feels weird contrasted with surpassing the likes of Tobias and Alain off screen
Considering that the last time we saw the Unova League a kid who was completely unaware that full battle means "bring your whole team" and who gave two free KOs to his opponent was one of the top 4 finalists, I think it's safe to say that the competition there isn't very tough. And to be fair, Alain only didn't challenge the Kalos Elite Four because he decided to start from scratch. Tobias is weird because he essentially disappeared after he won the Sinnoh league and Cynthia doesn't mention him when she reappears, which implies that either he simply didn't challenge the Sinnoh Elite Four for whatever reason, or one of them actually managed to beat him.

And Virgil didn't care about challenging the Elite Four. I have a feeling that Tobias simply disappeared into thin air once his purpose as an unstoppable wall had been served.

Remember how much of a huge deal being champion was for most of the series?
I predicted something like this could happen:
Honestly, I suspect the power of the champions is just going to be just toned down when it comes time, rather than Ash to really feel like he's progressed that far naturally.

I have a feeling that Tobias simply disappeared into thin air once his purpose as an unstoppable wall had been served.
He had to go; his planet needed him.

It seems like everything is going downhill; many concepts that the anime introduced and were enforced for years, are now just being discarded unceremoniously.

What happened to the worldbuilding?
I never thought that giving Satoshi that undeserved title will make other Champions' future appearances lose impact.

I’ve seen plenty of stories based around the fact that Ash’s “easy mode” league win in Alola came with him being a whole stairwell beneath fellow champions, which made him laughing stock and motivated him to train extra dilligently to make up for it.

If only the writers were willing to take such risks.

Dragon specialist used Dragon-type Pokémon predominantly...? Her Fukamaru, Emonga get appearances so what’s the issue?
The issue is that her starter Pokémon should get some focus irrespective of type speciality. It clearly was supposed to have a bond with her given their history prior to BW.
