General Mega Evolution Thread

B Viability. Wow, I'm happy Mega Camerupt is getting the love it is. I didn't like it at first but I've started warming up (eh? eh?) to it, and now it's one of my favorite new Megas. It's just too bad it doesn't get a better physical STAB then Flame Charge.

It gets EQ, but why would you even want to use a physical set? Especially with access to moves like Fire Blast, Earth Power, and Ancient Power which are all boosted by Sheer Force.

Indeed. I havn't played any of the OR/AS metagame, but I am already interested in adding one to my VGC team, which also happens to have a Flash Fire Chandelure. Trick Room+Sheer Force-boosted Lava Plume+Flash Fire-boosted Heat Wave... You do the math.

Why would you want a pure special set? Rock Slide is a superior option to AncientPower for its higher power and ability to hit SpDef targets.

I never said run a pure special set. I made the assumption TaiCrunch wanted to use an all-physical set, and pointed out he has much better options on the special side.

Rock Slide isn't doing anything better than Ancient Power against Sp.Def targets.

You're not getting past the likes of Chansey and Latias with either move so why bother with Rock Slide. And investing in Attack makes you lose out on bulk, which Camerupt needs because it's so slow. You could use Quiet (like some of the calcs above show) but eh, Ancient Power hits the things that Fire Blast and Earth Power don't just fine and in some cases (Latias, Mega Gardevoir, Sylveon etc), Fire Blast hits harder than Rock Slide anyway.

Edit: I mean I guess PP is an argument against Ancient Power. But you're gonna spamming Fire Blast and/or Earth Power the majority of the time anyway.

Yo all I said was I wish he had better physical STAB than Flame Charge. But yeah, I'd much rather go with a speical-based mixed set running Rock Slide over Ancient Power.

You use Quiet to get the extra power and it has more PP, yeah. Using Quiet also lets you pack Explosion in your last slot of if you prefer that over Wisp.

But as the Quiet calcs showed (from Sylveon down) what exactly is Rock Slide harder hitting that Fire Blast / Earth Power doesn't? Ancient Power hits Charizard Y, Talonflame, Mega Aero just fine that you don't need Quiet. If you are running Wisp, might as well use Ancient Power imo. Doubt you're gonna run out of 8PP anyway, because you won't be using Ancient Power / Rock Slide except very specific circumstances like Talon.

I'm not 100% sure, I just know what's standard and that it's Rock Slide over AP. I can do some research to find out, but like you said - it really doesn't matter too much because 99% of the time you just click Fire Blast.

EDIT: Apparently it hits Volcarona after it sets up, but that's for UU because people are assuming it will drop. So yeah amy as well use AP in OU

There's still a case for Rock Slide in Doubles and VGC alongside Heat Wave and Earth Power/Earthquake (though EP hits harder with the Sheer Force boost and of course doesn't hit your partner). And that Quiet nature will work very well on Trick Room teams.

Regarding the viability list posted a bit ago, I'm happy enough with how things are right now. Seeing my favorite Pokemon in A- simply fills my heart with rainbows. Gamefreak awoke my wrath with Mega Sharpedo's mehtastic stat increases, and I was worried that it wouldn't be that good, but seeing in B- has made me much more optimistic. Maybe that strong Crunch and bulk increase are worth more than I suspected, despite the loss of Speed Boost and the slight weakening of its non biting moves. Mega Diancie is high too. A bit depressing to see Steelix and Audino so low, but admittedly, I don't care all too much. Their designs are cool at least.

Speaking of Mega Diancie, I didn't realize it was so amazing in doubles. Heh, Diamond Storm hitting both opponents is so cool, I wish I knew about that earlier.

M-Camerupt getting a B in the viability ranking is the most suprising one to me, even more that it got a higher ranking than M-Sharp. But that just makes it more exciting, can't wait to use it in my TR team.

I wouldn't be surprised if Mega Sharpedo moves up higher in the rankings. I haven't used it, but it seems like it's better in practice than it looks on paper going by the people who've tested and commented on it.

Which is better: a adamant mega-bee or jolly mega-bee?
It has pretty good attack and speed but due to how frail it is, would it be better to hit hard or hit fast?

Jolly. It wants to be as fast as it can because anything that is faster will kill it. You're slower than any base 128+ with Adamant, which means missing out on Mega Lopunny, Mega Manectric, any Mega Sceptile that aren't running max Speed (otherwise it's a Speed tie), Mega Gyarados at +1, some Mega Altaria at +1, Mega Tyranitar (as uncommon as it is) etc. It's literally U-turn kill or be killed with bee, it needs to be faster than as much Pokemon as it possibly can.

Support M-Gallade is actually extremely effective. I was using Drain Punch/ WoW/ Knock Off/ Taunt.
I don't remember the EV's though they were based off RU Assault Vest set. It's got great surprise factor too, many Rotom's go for the Wisp only to be crippled. It also catches things like +2 Bisharp and Azumarill that want to Belly Drum.

I've found Mega Pidgeot to be a fantastic addition to VoltTurn teams in RU, nothing is really safe from its perfectly accurate Hurricanes as even flying resists get messed up by the high confuse rate. It has wonderful synergy with specs Dragalge, which can blow massive holes in its checks, letting M-Pidgeot clean up with ease.

Now that I've finished ORAS' Delta Episode and the VGC15 rules are out, I'm looking into testing the ORAS Megas out. I'm currently levelling up a Mega Beedrill that I've just finished EV training and will move onto testing Mega Lopunny next. I'm interested in seeing how Mega Beedrill could do with the support of an Amoonguss.

Standard M-Gallade (a.k.a. Close Combat, Psycho Cut, Leaf Blade, Night Slash) but the need to hit supereffectively can be a massive downfall a lot of the time.

I had my first wifi sweep with mega sableye last night. Wasn't terribly hard to set up, my friend's azumarill needed to be killed off but after that there wasn't really anyfin he could do to stop it, even his mega venusaur's crit giga drains were only doing like 50%. Used mega sharpedo a bit too, put in some work but wasn't able to actually sweep cause of his bloody conkeldurr. Friggin mach punch. Was going to use mega diancie too but he didn't wanna battle anymore, and I wasn't able to hassle anyone into dying to said mega diancie, which made me sad inside.

It has a 120 BP STAB move, backed by base 165 attack, and it "needs" to hit super effectively?

also, your "night slash > knock off" joke is pretty amusing. Actually, one of my friends insisted for a bit that night slash was better, though luckily I think he came to his senses.
