What are your feelings about Iris?

She wasn't annoying.
She simply wasn't boring :D

She is annoying, maybe not in the movies.
Maybe because she rarely uses her catchphrase in these, so say it playfully.

And Cilan was annoying with his "It's Evaluation Time". Really, they shouldn't have replaced Brock with him, even though I got bored of the crush gag.

I really dislike Iris, which is also a shame, because there were others things about her that could have worked in her favor imho. She was a different type of female companion and a lover of dragons. However, that condescending attitude of hers and that catchphrase that she always used just made me wish that someone would call her out on all of it and make her see what a kid she was all this time.

Also, it's because of the similarities between her and Misty that make things worse for me. Since it only reminded me of how nasty and uncalled for most of Misty's comments were towards Ash. However, for some reason, I'm willing to overlook Misty's harshness towards Ash, but not Iris'. I can also not stand Trip's attitude towards Ash, seeing as he's accomplished more than Trip ever has on his journey.

That could have been a factor, but I think it was more likely due to how she didn't do much in the movies. The same can be said for most of Ash's friends too, but she didn't really do anything that annoyed me in the movies. The most was that battle montage where she only lost due to Emolga not listening to her or something. When Iris wasn't the main focus, she wasn't as frustrating to watch. She'd still be annoying, especially with her catchphrase and acting as if she was much more of an expert than she really was, but she was at least more tolerable than when she had a larger focus or was the main focus of an episode.

Honestly, I was more annoyed with how characters started to react to Cilan's Evaluation Time bit. It was his goal to evaluate the bond between humans and Pokemon, but it just became a joke after awhile and that never made much sense to me. Cilan could get pretty dramatic when doing that bit, but characters started to act like he was just weird for doing that all of a sudden. Brock's gag was old, but at least Croagunk helped to make it funnier for me. While I do like Brock, it was probably for the best to start giving a new whole new cast for Ash to travel with every series. It helped to keep things more fresh instead of always throwing Brock into the mix.

Hate her, simple as that.

Sorry, but she did nothing for me. I wanted to like her because she's actually one of my favorite characters in the games. But I can't take her in the show. She's a bootleg Misty but 10X more annoying. She's supposed to be a Gym Leader but she makes no improvement whatsoever. From the beginning of the series to the end, not a drop of improvement was made. Axew is still worthless. Dragonite still didn't listen to her. Emolga still only served as comic relief. And she talked more about wanting to be a Dragon master than ever doing anything to move towards it. Her personality was unchanged, too. She didn't mature at all and remained as childish as she made everyone else out to be. It's like she's incapable of looking in a mirror and realizing that she's the spawn of the things she talked down on so much. I honestly pitied every character that got involved with her.

The episode with the flowers is pretty much what sealed the deal when she got pissy with Ash over a fxxking flower and acted like it was the end of the world. Like cry me a river. Even when Ash tried to apologize, she literally acted like he had the otherworldly ability to know that the fruit he gave her was bitter and was trying to get back at her. Like are you serious? If she's as mature as she says she is, she would have obviously known that he would have had no way of knowing that but instead went on acting like a uncultured brat crying in a tree for half an episode and acting like the world owed her an apology for something that wasn't even that big a deal OR HIS FAULT. It was all HER fault in the first place for letting Axew screw around. If she was even HALF the trainer she thinks she is, none of the sht would have even happened~

As far as I'm concerned, she deserves all the hate she gets and more~

I really, really hate how the writers constructed Iris. For several reasons in no particular order:

~Her Goal. Akin to Misty, Iris was Ash's second companion who had a sole dream of mastering a specific type of Pokemon. Given Iris's depiction in the games as well as a focus on Dragon type legendary Pokemon for Black and White, I was initially excited at the prospect of seeing all of that animated. However, I was sorely disappointed. While Iris touted her Dragon type master aspirations as much as Ash's Pokemon Master obligations, she rarely put in any considerable effort towards her goal. Honestly, by the time Decolore ended, she was no closer to her goal than when she started (a part from Axew mastering Dragon Rage). Lets see, shall we? Firstly, she failed to catch any of her regions native Dragon type Pokemon besides Axew (whom was a gift at that). Additionally, she didn't even show any interest in catching any Dragon types besides Dragonite! I believe one of the criteria for being a type specialist is to utilize many Pokemon of said type. Secondly, she didn't really train the Dragon type Pokemon she had on hand. After Axew perfected Dragon Rage, it rarely saw battle again apart from two brief instances where it learned two rather powerful moves. It fought considerably less than Piplup, its previous counterpart, did despite having an explicit goal to evolve into a Haxorus some day. Her other Dragon type, Dragonite, served as nothing more than a deus ex machina to have her win a couple battles-of its own volition no less. These two glaring facts in hand, its easy to see how her "journey" throughout Unova with Ash seemed largely ineffectual. She gained no growth, no better understanding of the Dragon type than when she started and failed to defeat Drayden in their rematch, despite travelling around a huge chunk of Unova.

~"Such a Kid." In addition to her failure with her goal, Iris's personality was annoying. Coming off of rather nice girls May and Dawn, Iris and her snobbish personality initially seemed refreshing. Especially since there were parallels drawn to Misty's earlier interactions with Ash. However, the novelty quickly subsided when Iris couldn't back up her arrogance. She spent a good portion of early BW criticizing Ash left and right, sometimes on aspects he reasonably was ignorant about (Ex. How was Ash suppose to know what Trip's Frillish's ability was when he a) has never seen the Pokemon before and b) the ability is newly native to the region he just arrived in?), even though strength and experience wise she wasn't any better. She, a girl with a useless baby dragon and a steel mole who wouldn't listen to her commands, kept chiding a 4 time Pokemon League participant. Early on, when Ash rightly challenged her to battle, she couldn't even accept. Which leads us to our second element-hypocrisy. Her character was full of it-berating others and being defensive if any criticism was ever redirected back at her. These two negative traits persisted through the saga and severely took a toll on her likability. Also of note, was her ridiculous fear of Ice type Pokemon. Unlike Misty with a reasonably justified fear of Bug types (Entomophobia is real folks), Iris was rather prejudiced to Ice-type Pokemon simply because they are one of the, now three, weaknesses of Dragon types. When Trip mentions that her fear of Ice types, based on that rational, is irrational, as Dragon-type moves are super effective against Dragon-type Pokémon as well (by her logic, she shouldn't even be able to touch Axew and her goal would be utterly ridiculous), she barely shrugs it off and offers a half-baked excuse that she also dislikes the cold. Her excuse doesn't justify her fear and fear thus appears unrealistic as a result.

~Potential and Group Dynamic. Again, when I saw that Iris was joining the cast as a travelling companion for Ash, I thought it was pretty cool. In the games, she was a rural girl with an affinity for the outdoors. I thought such elements would uniquely contrast with Ash, and later Cilan, given that he isn't as outdoorsy as she is. And for a while, this actually was realized! Early in BW, Iris's outdoor and spiritual affinity was shown in several instances, whether it was her sleeping in trees, solely eating wild berries and vegetables or arguing with CIlan on the existence of the supernatural. However, all of that gradually began to phase out and only occurred rarely late into the saga. Furthermore, Iris herself became pretty bland. Her loss of uniqueness in addition to all the above made it difficult to identify with her. She became both static and stagnant and didn't really offer to the group dynamic like previous female characters had done. It literally became Ash and his tag along cheer squad (cough Iris and Cilan cough), and that was it. Regarding Cilan, she didn't have too many moments with him either. It seemed they only traveled together for the sake of convenience rather than actual connection and friendship. Aside from their mini spat in Nacrene City, when did the two have a solid interaction episode? Even her rivalry was pretty stupid. Given how obsolete Iris was, they gave her a rival who only challenged for an incredibly petty reason-and Iris couldn't even measure up to her rival's strength until halfway past the saga!

~Her Pokemon. Though three out of the four disobeyed her to various levels throughout the saga (and she's supposed to be a prodigy, right?), all four of them were pretty scrappy in their own ways:
-Again, Axew was pretty useless throughout a majority of the series. After ending DP with a pretty competent Piplup, Axew filled the void for the longest time with a basic Scratch and messy Dragon Rage. While it did gain rather impressive moves in the form of Outrage and Giga Impact, it rarely executed the moves after learning them. In fact, it largely took a back seat to the cast's other Pokemon for (big) fight sequences. It frequently bouncing back between being a baby and non-baby didn't really help matters either. This was especially annoying, given that it had an explicit goal of reaching its final stage. Also, it personally bothered me that it resided in Iris's hair-that's just unhygienic.
-Excadrill was Iris's starter Pokemon, but you wouldn't know it given how it was treated. For a purely self-conceived reason, it decided to ignore Iris for a portion of the series; apparently embarrassment is synonymous for disobedience. While it eventually overcame its own self-imposed shortcoming, it saw much less screen time once Dragonite entered the picture. Its inclusion as Iris's Pokemon just seemed entirely left field-the same growth and backstory could have easily been down with a Druddigon or Deino (ya know, actual Dragon-type Pokemon).
-Emolga was a random catch as well. Given to Iris solely for the purpose of having a party member with the region's Pikachu clone, Emolga , like her trainer, faded into obscurity. She had a penchant for being The Rival to Ash's Snivy as well as being laxy+gluttonous, but these quirks ended as soon as they were created (briefly returning in the Cinccino episode towards the end of the series). Emolga also was the second Pokemon to routinely disobey Iris, apparently because it hated battling. Like, why write such a Pokemon for a character whose goal essentially centers around battling? Emolga had wasted potential and personally I feel that Bel should have caught it (and give Iris an actual dragon type instead).
-Lastly, Dragonite. If I had a quarter for every time I heard a "Kaiiiiiiiiiiiryuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu," I would have enough money to pay for a Netflix subscription and watch something better. Dragonite was annoying because it was Iris's third Pokemon with obedience issues, full of plot armor when not listening to Iris, and losing every fight when listening to Iris. Like, they only gave her Dragonite because the writers realized they couldn't end the series with Iris, the aspiring Dragon Master, having only baby Axew to show for all her work.

All in all, Iris was a pretty bad character. Very poorly written, underdeveloped, and overall lackluster. She didn't even get a cameo or visit in the XY(Z) Saga! There was a lot of potential for her there too, given that the new Fairy type was introduced specifically to counter Dragons, there was a Dragon-type Elite Four specialist, new Dragons were in the region and Ash caught both of them and had both in his party, and the saga finale and last quarter arc centered around an immensely powerful Dragon-type Legendary. But nope, apparently the writers were like nah, brah. She was so bad she broke the female companion status quo. If that isn't a testament to her character, I don't know what is.

I totally forgot about Iris' fear of Ice types. That was another element that made it seem like they wanted to make her similar to Misty, but like their other attempts, the execution was pretty lousy. Misty's fear of bugs made sense. People are afraid of bugs and the idea that someone would freak out over something like a Pinsir was reasonable. Iris' fear didn't really make much sense given that it was seemingly only due to Dragons being weak against Ice types. Another problem was that they really weren't consistent with the gag. Misty wasn't afraid of all Bug types, but the exceptions were generally Bug Pokemon that were traditionally cute like Ledyba. I remember that in the episode where the fear was first introduced, Iris and Axew were both really uncomfortable, but then she was able to shake it off when she first battled against Georgia. It makes the gag much less funny if it doesn't make any sense.

I also forgot about Emolga not listening to Iris at first, but that's probably because it wasn't as big of a deal for Iris compared to her situations with Excadrill and Dragonite. Plus, I think it was resolved quite easily. Emolga fading into the background after awhile didn't help either.

Personally, I never really thought that there was much potential in Iris coming to Kalos. I couldn't really see her clicking with the group's dynamic, she could potentially battle Fairy types anywhere given that quite a few older Pokemon were retyped to become Fairy Pokemon and I don't think she could have factored into the Team Flare arc given that Bonnie was the one bonding with Zygarde. I don't know if they'd have a returning character play that big of a role in the climax of a series too. Most of the suggestions people had for an Iris return arc felt kind of forced to me. While it could have been a matter of just not having any room to bring Iris into the storyline during XY's run, I wouldn't be surprised if her being relatively unpopular from what I've seen played a role in it too. It also probably didn't help that her Pokemon weren't really marketable or popular either. Regardless of the reasons, I do think it was for the best that they didn't find a way to force Iris into XY. Even if I did like her, I don't think I would have wanted another forced inclusion of a previous traveling companion after how Dawn's return was handled.

Can you imagine Iris meeting Dedenne?

Iris is the most awful character that I never seen in this anime. she is the worst, and I really really really don't want to see her any more. Her character, and pokemons are the worst, and really really really I wished that she isn't in the entire pokemon world. I don't know why she is in the Anime ever? Nothing good comes from her character, her wins are not wins in reality. They came like guns in my heart. Her win are not luck, it is so unfair, so stupid matches, because the lucks can happen by time to time, but no she is the one whoo win. I am so so so so soooooory for you Miss Georgia, and to you too Miss Burgundy for what happened to you both in the entire matches, and story. You both really really really deserve to be in finals really you did a very good matches but no lost unfairly specially when you both lost to Iris.

Winning in matches, games, winning the entire tournament were so awful. I found myself anger, anger, and anger.I really angered, and hated the entire game. Luke was should eliminate her pokemon Axew. In the first match, she won even if she should be eliminated by souk. I hated her firstly for You are such a kid which should be for her, but no, she is the one who said it, and then we see that she is really really really really baby not just kid. In reality, to me then she should not be a trainer, she should be drink milk like babies in home; because she doesn't know anything.

Catching Dragonite is the most awful thing. I didn't want to see the episode. I always frustrate when I see that Dragonite, and in reality Iris should be in Cynthia's level if she can Catch Dragonite; Because Dragonite and Garchamp are same, both are nearby to be legendary, they are pusedo legendary pokemons; so Iris is cythina. I hated both Dawn, Cynthia when they didn't hit Iris for every problems she down in the battles. Ash been hated by problem if he made one mistake, but in the other hand, Iris made everyone in danger when she lost to Krokodile, but no one concerned about that. I really reallly really think that dragonite should lost from the beginning of the battle.

About axew, after what we saw from axew and his super unnatural power when he learnt outrage and giga impact the 2 super power attack who nearly need 20 level traning final evolution and axew learn them out of nowwhere for one shot and with not training let's hope axew learn hyperbeam, on roar of time or Spacial Rend or two of these two attacks or all of them.

The roar of time is special dragon attack for dialga but axew is super special so hy can learn it in xyand same with special rend who is attack for palkia

So for hyperbeam who is special for final eveoulation except dragonair who can use it and not final evolution however who super unnatural axew and his traning iris (damn axew and iris0 he can learn hyperbeam and beat all the rules of pokemon

So the question is :"Axew will learn hyperbeam, roar of time and Spacial Rend"?

Emolga the Irresistible! Episode with Emolga and the New Volt Switch! Episode VS Purrloin: Sweet or Sneaky? Episode

I really really really want to do a challenge for both Emolga two episodes with purrolin episode, or purrolin sweet or sneaky episode which I think that both of them have some relationships. In the purrloin episode, I want to know about the reason of why they want us to say that the purrolin is more sneaky pokemon than sweety pokemon, with making Cilan hated, and scared from him even if cilan is the one who involved with any pokemon. The Purrloin was a good pokemon who is been hurt after thinking that his pokemon is betrayed it him.

In the other hand, Emolga was a pokemon who build problems, who make people fight each other. He didn't want to join anyone other than make fun of pokemons, taking foods, make fighting, but no still the writers want us to feel that he is a good pokemon. I really happy that My lovely pokemon snivy did punished him for his problems. Emolga was te reasons for every problems, and just run away when the problems happen. But in reality, The one who should catch it is Bianca, who really worked hard all the time in Emolga the Irresistible! Episode with her hypervoice pokemon, but no the one who catch it is The awful Iris.

The Village of Dragons VS Masara Taun (Pallet Town)

I really got bored from the people who said that Iris is from Village of Dragons who always lived with Dragons, eat them, can understand them, and united with them; so for all these reasons then Iris Can do all impossible things such as axew can learn the outrage, and giga impact out of nowhere, and can catch dragonite; then if that so, then Ash is from the densetsu masara taun (Legendary Pallet Town); so I decide to do a comparison between The Village of Dragons VS Masara Taun (Pallet Town).

1. Sure that village of dragons are living with dragons, can united with them, but Also Pallet Town is the village for entire pokemons; so why Ash can not catch any final evolution. Yes you can say that he catched Muk, primeppe, and bidrill but if you ash me, then in reality then it is so easy to catch theese pokemons, nit Dragonite. Even dawn got her Togekiss from another girl, even if they did a change between each other, but still they in reality are different persons.

2. In the village of Dragons, there is a two big dragons master, who are the elder, are the gym leader draidon; so she can catch Dragonite, and make Axew learn these Extremely stupid Attacks. If that so, then I will tell that in the Masara taun, there is the legendary proffesor, the one who everyone want to see by television, her his voice, talk with him in telephone, or meet with him for one time, the legendary oak; so why that didn't affect ash in everything. Why ash didn't catch Mewtwo, or Tranitar, or Garchomp.

Good Thinking my best friend. that Episode was awful, and nothing good from it. I really really really anger that only one single fxxking flower made like she lost the world. Ash didn't do anything wrong in that episode, and I do want that Ash didn't allowed her to travell with him anymore

Iris fearing from Ice is Really really really awful also. I don't know the point from it. I am sure that they know that no one concered about her; so they wanted to make something that make us be happy from her, but no I don't like at all, and in reality I also Hate insects such as Misty , and multi people also have have this fear so this thing is fine, not from Icce. If that so, then she should hate the dragon type but it deefeat himself, and she should hate hate hate this type: "Fairy Type", even it is so so so cute type

I really hate Iris

When Trip mentions that her fear of Ice types, based on that rational, is irrational, as Dragon-type moves are super effective against Dragon-type Pokémon as well (by her logic, she shouldn't even be able to touch Axew and her goal would be utterly ridiculous)
Playing the devil's advocate: Wasn't there an episode that reveal she used to be scared of Dragon types?

Unlike Misty with a reasonably justified fear of Bug types (Entomophobia is real folks), Iris was rather prejudiced to Ice-type Pokemon simply because they are one of the, now three, weaknesses of Dragon types. I don't particularly understand how this is an inaccurate or unrealistic portrayal of a phobia, as phobias are defined as "extreme or irrational fear or aversion to something". It's not as if Iris never acknowledged the irrationality of her phobia, either - she, iirc, agrees with Shooti that is irrational. However, just because your mind tells you that a fear is irrational, does not mean your body or response will concur with this. I liked how it was irrational, as that is an accurate portrayal of a phobia - a lot of times, I see phobias with a backstory trying to rationalise the phobia when this takes away from the suffering caused by irrational phobias since people might ignorantly tell someone that there's no rational point in thinking this way. (This is not to say that fears based on rational backstories cause any less suffering, they are just as bad). I have a phobia myself, and I know it is irrational - it feels real however and that is what maintains it.

But fear of ice types is so...unrelatable. At least with Misty you could understand since plenty of people are afraid of bugs. If they gave her a reason to be afraid of ice-types, like idk, she got attacked by one once or she got lost in a snowstorm, etc. It could have been more relatable. It's true that phobias are irrational but the most common one have some basis, people are afraid of heights because they can fall, people are afraid of bugs because they look unsettling and some are dangerous, people are afraid of the dark because they can't see, etc.

Iris is Zekrom.

Cilan's fear of Purrloin was irrational. The writers never provided any reason to it. It was likely based on real-world superstition involving black cats, but no explanation was given in-universe. Iris' fear of Ice-type Pokémon, however, was explained. The writers tried to rationalize Iris' phobia and the reason they provided was weak. She feared Ice types simply because they're bad news for Dragon-type Pokémon, but following her own logic she should be afraid of Dragon types as well.

People would be less likely to criticize Iris' fear if the reason given by the writers was convincing or if it was just an irrational fear like you mentioned, but they went for a crappy reason instead. Also, her fear was poorly executed. Iris had little trouble commanding a Vanilluxe in Crisis at Ferroseed Research!, in which she got over her fear pretty quickly and was even complimented by Georgia at the end of that episode. Her fear was never important during her battles against Georgia or any other Ice-type user. Her Dragonite had Ice Beam as one of its moves and she was totally fine with it.

It was lame. Not very relatable. A poor attempt at a running gag.

That may be a reach though no? Dragon type weakness against each other was probably common knowledge to Iris. It brings into question why Georgia couldn't stand Dragon types, after losing so badly to a trainer in the village of dragons. How is that different from Iris?

It was lame. Not very relatable. A poor attempt at a running gag.

I agree it could have been done a lot better. I disagree with it being non-relatable. As someone who trains water types with every game, I get cautious around thunder and grass type pokemon. If Iris is "one with dragons" why shouldn't she initially fear the type that is super effective against them. They are a huge road block in her goal.

But meh, maybe that's just me.

-------------------------------------------------------

Iris fearing from Ice is Really really really awful also. I don't know the point from it. I am sure that they know that no one concered about her; so they wanted to make something that make us be happy from her, but no I don't like at all, and in reality I also Hate insects such as Misty , and multi people also have have this fear so this thing is fine, not from Icce. If that so, then she should hate the dragon type but it deefeat himself, and she should hate hate hate this type: "Fairy Type", even it is so so so cute type

I really hate Iris

Am I talk with myself here??????????????????
If That so, then Why I am entering in the threads, or posts, or in the entire forums.

But one important thing, this thread should be closed; because it will do the fights again, or no I forgot that if I am the one who did ths thread, then right it will closed.

But, I am not the one who opened this thread; so it will not close, even if it will open the fight again

That may be a reach though no? Dragon type weakness against each other was probably common knowledge to Iris. It brings into question why Georgia couldn't stand Dragon types, after losing so badly to a trainer in the village of dragons. How is that different from Iris?

But meh, maybe that's just me.

No, that completely different. Having someone hate types is ok, but scared from them because they are type advantages are completely stupid.

If that so, then why misty doesn't scared from Grass? Why Brock doesn't scared from ground, fight, and water?

Scared from type is extremely stupid, but hate them for meaningful reason is ok

If Iris saw Dedenne, would she have run like the little kid she is?

@may-serena-dawn Do you watch dub or Japanese? I read someone saying her catchphrase sounds less annoying in Japanese than in English, do I don't speak Japanese. Do you?

First off: I really dig your profile name. May, Dawn, and Serena all had meaningful stories, and I too am one of the few people who loved all 3.

Second, I still disagree, for that would still be negative energy towards pokemon due to how they were born, wouldn't it? How could one be justified and not the other? I think both are realistic, one does not need to be more valid. At least in my view.
