Writers' Workshop General Chat Thread

Unfortunately I'm not seeing an option to prevent that. I think all avatars being scaled up to fit the box may be the default.

my avatar seems to have been spared, as it seems to be as smol as ever

Ironically, this is the first post I made where this changed

what's weird is that it does remember when i choose bluebook, but not that i make the width wider. the default theme it does give in wide mode. are widths tied to themes?

I like the new theme, and my big profile pic. Is there a list somewhere of all changes/improvements?

Anyway, not sure I've posted at all since the flu hit me on Friday. Now Partner's caught it too! Didn't go into work yesterday or today, but doing some work from home. Just doing my best, you know?

I've wanted to write a fanfic that challenges that idea for a while, but I don't want people to get mad at me for ragging on the Newverse.

This isn't FIMfiction, so I'm not sure many of us have ever heard of Newverse, let alone defend its honour, so to speak. It doesn't interest me as a setting, partly because I'm not into FIM, and partly because I'm not interested in edgy, tired tropes about how pokémon are too good for us.

Also, "New"verse? That's a completely undescriptive name, and it bothers me slightly that it communicates nothing about the premise.

The problem is, this story is an anthology, so it's not just about "one" thing.

But your anthology does have a theme, yes? You said, more or less, that it was about how people were affected by the premise of the crossover besides the standard trainer stories and cynical negativity. Your theme is positive but overlooked relationships, is it not?

I was more worried that people on other websites would get mad at me, but now that I've thought up more ideas for the other story (the one that isn't ANPANA), I've realised that it'll be more like me occasionally critiquing the Newverse instead of outright hating it. I'm more interested in writing about sentient Pokémon who don't have the same values as humans now. It'll probably end up being on FictionPad instead of Fimfiction, since the My Little Pony elements will probably be peripheral if I decide to include them at all.

The name wasn't coined by the original author, and comes from the fact that the word "New" is repeated in the title of the original story, but now that you mention it, it does sound quite New Super Mario Bros-esque.

I've rewritten the description since then, by the way.

I mean, I didn't mention Super Mario. And the point stands — the name of a setting should indicate something about the premise.

Anyway, best of luck, but if you don't care for the Newverse and you aren't even going to include the ponies or post on FIMfiction, why use the setting?

Because I can't think of anything else. I find writing about ponies boring, but I might involve another race from the My Little Pony G4 universe. I'm not sure.

What environment do Nidos live in? Plains? The main character is a Nidoran.

I was using NSMB as an example of a boring title.

@Nitro Indigo Aren't the G4 races almost always some real life animals or already widely known mythical creatures? Why do you need the MLP element for that at all? MLP doesn't own deer or kirin. When you're using an element that peripheral, no one would yell at you even if you executed the ideas similarly to MLP. I really doubt they're that mindblowingly unique.

And you can just make Nidos live basically anywhere that isn't completely inhabitable for their type. Humans manage to live in all kinds of different biomes and we're the normalest of normal you can get. Just pick a setting you're interested in and/or know much about and choose that if this setting is the one your story will mostly take place in.

The problem is, I wasn't prepared for unrepentantAuthor to answer a question I asked a while ago and had already moved on from. I think I should stop worrying about the fine details and write the character interactions I've been thinking of, then figure out how they all connect later.

Because I was unwilling to try something new, and maybe I should. I've entertained the idea of it being set on PokeEarth instead.

I really ought to look more seriously at getting a new laptop. This one is beginning to literally crack apart - I was going to get one before Christmas, but ended up holding on to the money

Depending on your budget, you might want to take a look at PC Specialist since they'll let you assemble one based on what specs you need. Though if you're like me and know nothing about that sort of thing, it might be worth getting someone technical to advise on what parts you should get.

I've also been looking at a laptop for travel reasons. My old one barely functions anymore, and when I'm on the road where I'll be away from home for a couple days, I just wanna wind down and write in the evenings. Gonna get something cheap though; I'll only need it for my text editor, a music player and possibly Discord.

Well, that's just it - I don't need much, but tablets pretending to be laptops annoy me, so from a (rational) technical standpoint I'm probably a frustrating Luddite.

I asked this before elsewhere but only got one reply which didn’t really help so I’ll ask it here: if Thomas the Tank Engine and Pokemon had a crossover what would any of you like to see? I’m asking because I’m writing one myself but have no idea what fans of Pokemon want to see in it.

i've never watched thomas so i can't speak for the fans but as an outsider i imagine the overlap to be pretty small... however iirc there has been at least one thomas fic on here, so you're not alone.

I'm in need of a new laptop as well, my bag got stolen a week ago, and I've given up hope. I've been using a friend's for schoolwork, but I need to get my own again.

It's still perfectly possible to get a decent, budget, ordinary laptop without too much fuss. If you like, I can recommend something to you online that matches the specs you need. Otherwise you might want to go to a physical shop and get staff assistance picking something out. I've had some luck doing this.

Speaking for myself, a fic which crossed over with Thomas wouldn't hold any interest for me. I'm just not interested in that franchise. Possibly the reason you haven't had more than one reply so far is that people feel this way and aren't sure how to say as much without coming off as dismissive. Nevertheless; there you have it. I just don't think very many people want to read about Thomas. Best of luck, though.
