Preview JN049: Koharu and the Mysterious, Mysterious Eievui!

Oh boy, I can't wait for the second coming of Sandy! I still remember the epic moment when Lana gave her Eevee a nickname and haircut, super important and unique things that nobody in the main cast would have been able to do! And thank goodness Sandy's only battle was offscreen because who cares about battles? Battles are sooo boring and not nearly as good for a Pokemon's character development as sitting on a girl's arms/lap all the dang time! Just like Togepi! Now that was a useful Pokemon whose character development blows Infernape's out of the wat- okay, stopping the sarcasm now. Please just don't make this another Sandy, writers, that's all I ask. It shouldn't be too hard.
Okay now keep that emotion and imagine what happens if Koharu goes with Ash and Go when they go back to Alola and her Eevee meets Sandy.

I had forgotten about Sandy until several of you brought it up; maybe that speaks to how much of an impact it had.

I haven't really been impressed with how the main characters' Eevee have been treated:
  • May's was stale with no discernible personality.
  • Serena's instantly got over its insecurities/character traits with evolution and didn't do much after.
  • Lana's was marketed as something special with Let's Go, Eevee levels of potential, but ultimately received less notable screen time than its predecessors; the fact that it never became a Vaporeon bothers me.
I don't think the writers have it in them at this point, especially with how undermined and underused Koharu already is as a character. Calling it now-Eevee will be nothing more than a pet that accompanies her Trainer to school.

The most memorable thing about Sandy is the controversy surrounding his capture, since a lot of people were hoping/expecting Ash to catch him only for Lana to do it instead. And tbh I'd say that Sandy is still the worst-handled MC Eevee so far, because the former two at least did something plot or character-relevant, while Sandy might as well have been a piece of cardboard with how inconsequential he was. The fact that he got so much hype leading up to his capture did him no favors, since all buildup and no payoff is one of the most frustrating things in any narrative.

I also want to make the addendum that giving an Eevee to a Water-type specialist of all people is a very jarring choice. Water is the most common type in the game, and there wasn't a "current gen mons only" restriction for the main cast like in the BW saga, so Lana had no shortage of options for Water-types to add to her roster. But no, let's give her an Eevee instead because she's the writer's favorite and thus she must get the popular and marketable secondary mascot because we gotta boost her popularity with viewers without actually having to do any work on her character. And yes, I know that Eevee can evolve into Vaporeon, but since Sandy was blatant Let's Go promotion it was beyond obvious that he wouldn't evolve.

Yes, I am bitter, why you ask? :p

I'm curious what's so mysterious about this Eevee. A recent interview also stated that it holds a secret of some sort. Are they building up to a new Eeveelution, or is this just false hype.

I think it’s pretty clear that it’s going to be G-Max. Not 100%, of course, but I think if you’re expecting a new eeveelution you’re setting yourself up for disappointment.

Now the question is if Chole's role will grow with this...or if she'll remain a recurring character and this Eevee be as worthless as Sandy was...

Sure, it will likely G-Max later, but there's no telling when that will be, or how often. Wouldn't it be something if we waited a long time for it to G-Max...only for it to happen once in the entire series? Especially if it's for a short time and/or is underwhelming (like if it's defeated easily or defeats the opponent easily)

The “mysterious” Eevee, huh? Somehow I feel like said mystery won’t be half as satisfying as it sounds.

Glad Chloe is getting focus, though. She’s the one character in this season that’s been getting consistent development.

Could be, but what's the likelyhood of Koharu being in Galar AND being in a Dynamax scenario any time in the foreseeable future. Pretty low imo. I guess if we see it playing around in a large pile of fire stones and not evolving, that could earn it it's "mysterious" status.

I'm not really an Eevee fan so I won't lose sleep either way, but what's a generation where they invent 2 new Regi-s but no new Eeveelutions? Or maybe it's something else entirely. While probably just aesthetic, it might have something to do with that electric aura Eevee appeared to be surrounded by on that recent poster.

I don't know why Sandy didn't have any of the LGPE moves, but it's never too late. That would explain Chloe's Eevee possibly knowing an Electric-type move.

A new Eeveelution could be introduced next year if they don't do remakes, but this Eevee is here to stay for a while.

I don’t think it’s very unlikely that she would tag along to Galar with Ash and Goh at some point. She does have a Pokémon that is native to Galar, after all.

People were saying the same thing about Eeveelutions before Gen 8, predicting that it would introduce some. Instead we got G-Max Eevee. Considering Eevee’s G-Max hasn’t been seen in the anime yet, I think it’s safe to say that’s probably where this is going.

Yeah, pretty sure that if we were going to get a new Eeveelution for this gen we would have gotten it by now. The secret is Gigantamax for sure, what else could it be? Sure, the writers are trying to be all mysterious possibly to get us excited, but they ain't fooling anyone. I'll be genuinely impressed if the secret does turn out to be something else. If it is the Partner Moves, then unless they're gonna return in SWSH (which I don't think is very likely) I really don't see the point of Chloe's Eevee having them. Moreover, it'd make Sandy even more pointless than he already was.

I'm wondering: if they say here that Eevee holds a secret, shouldn't that mean that its capability of Gigantamaxing is hinted at, mentioned, or even displayed in this episode?
That's what I was trying to get at. Assuming this is a Kanto episode, how can Gigantamaxing even be brought up and be the justification for Eevee being mysterious? (short of showing it swim through a pile of elemental stones and fail to evolve). "Mysterious" must be reference to something else.

Think about it, Gigantamax hasn't even been portrayed as a rare trait in this series. Every single Pokemon with the potential to Gigantamax has been able to. We've even assumed as a fanbase that Gou's Cinderace will be able to, however Cinderace and Ash's Pikachu haven't been described as "mysterious" because of that. And the final nail in the coffin...if Eevee's mysterious quirk turns out to be Gigantamax (and thus, it's inability to evolve), then that means they would finally have to confront the fact that Ash's Pikachu is also incapable of evolving, rendering about a dozen episodes from the past obsolete, and forfeiting the "will they/won't they" tension that they've been trying so hard to maintain all these years. Not happening.

That could actually make for an interesting premise though.

Say this Eevee has had an owner before, but it got abandoned when the owner found out it could not evolve even when exposed to evolutionary stones. After some twists and turns, the Eevee gets sent to Professor Sakuragi, for him to research and help the Eevee.

The Eevee is mistrustful of humans given its experience, so the professor brings the Eevee home to spend more time with it. Koharu then bonds with the Eevee through some event, and captures the Eevee at the end of the episode.

As for gigantamaxing, the writers don't need to resolve everything within the same episode. Maybe in a future episode, Eevee could express interest or be drawn to Ash/Go's Dynamax Band. Koharu takes notice and thus decides to travel to Galar with the boys at the next opportunity to try and get a band for herself.

What is so special about Gigantamaxing if even Meowth can do it apparently?

There has to be more...Oh wait this is Pokémon Journeys.

There is possibly nothing special about this eevee, probably she just just the hearth shaped tail.
