I'd think that a Pokemon with okay stats and the right nature would be the obvious answer. You can of course fix that by breeding, especially if the Pokemon with great stats is a male... then just use an everstone on a female of the right nature. Usually I will keep males with at least one good stat (31) around from breeding projects even if it's not what I want, because I can always breed him with another species in the future that may need that stat.
"Range for tolerance" is subjective. Some people will settle for "good enough", some people say only around 28 and higher, and some people will do the tedious work of getting 31 in the two most important stats. Personally for me it just comes down to what I can do. Generally during my first breeding wave, I hatch about 30 eggs, assuming half of them are the right nature... check IVs, and if I'm not satisfied, I take the best male and best female, and repeat the process. After that I usually get something nice, but not always, in which case I'll just take the best and leave it at that. If the results are truly horrible and I don't like it after trying it out, I'll ask for outside help.
Okay... I've recently caught some shiny female Nidorans. I plan to use one on a stealth rock/toxic spikes/spikes/sandstorm kind of team (not necessarily all those things, just have decided which yet). I need to choose between an impish one with poison point, and an impish one with rivalry. Their IVs are decent enough for shiny Pokemon, and they don't vary enough to make that a deal breaker. I'm just wondering if poison point is going to be redundant on a team with toxic spikes... or if rivalry is too risky (although I will probably only have one attack move on her, two at most). Opinions?
