Preview JN065: Dragon Battle! Satoshi VS Iris!!

I sure hope Dragonite is female because Ash's last team was a complete sausage fest, so it'd be good if he got at least one girl or two for this saga. I don't know why the show is so reluctant to give Ash female Pokemon, but it's pretty stupid. Almost as if the writers actually think cooties are real or something.

And yeah, either Ash is going to lose (or at least tie), the rest of the PWC is REALLY dragged out, or they're trying to get it over and done with sooner than we thought...
He may be ranked 184th, but that could mean up any number of battles, really. Say there are 8 Hyper Class battles left, would that really be "dragged out"? No, it would just mean that the battles up till now were appetizers (I, for one, don't think we needed to see more of them, although one more wouldn't have hurt). It's easier to go through the Normal and Super classes.

Goh needs to be present so he can be introduced to Iris.
Why does he need to meet her?
Meeting Iris is not related to his goal in any way.
We know that he's only moved by his dream.
Seeing a one off gag get used again doesn't really bother me much.
My main issue is having both Iris, or anything from BW, and rehash in the same sentence.
I admit that I was very unfair to BW back then when it was airing, because they were trying to imitate OG so much.
Having the gag being reused makes me remember that.

Iris got the shortest end of the stick; not only her bond with Satoshi is so little developed and has one of the worst written episodes dedicated to it....
This episode will have to juggle with that handicap while dealing with Gou, who will make it awkward.....
Instead of trying to remedy what BW left by emphasizing on just Satoshi and Iris, with its climax being the battle.

I'm still excited for it, but I feel that some potential got lost in the way.
Uonoragon may not battle, and if it does it'll be one-shotted.
If this ends with Satoshi giving it to Iris. Cheers!

I have already said this before in the old thread, but, i genuinely do not like the idea of Ash losing to Iris, not after all of that "little kid" talk that he had to put up with in BW. Ash was already, at least, a moderately more experienced trainer than Iris and did not deserve to be put through all of that in my opinion. That was the main reason for me not liking Iris very much, her condescending attitude towards Ash just did not seem fair or valid, which is a shame, since i'm pretty sure that i probably would have liked her due to her 'wild child' personality and her love of dragons (a feeling I can relate to). But, for me; that "little kid" nonsense is what kept me from ever liking her.

And since it seems very likely that that will be a returning a factor when she appears, i really don't want Ash losing to her to be another reason for why i might not care much for this episode, even if a fight between the two Dragonites is something that have subconsciously been wanting to see

This is a bad take. Goh shouldn’t meet anyone at all if that’s the case. His characterization is that he’s introverted and doesn’t know a lot of people, I don’t see what’s wrong with him interacting with characters like Kiwawe, Gurkinn and Tokio (JN032) if he gets something out of interacting with them. I don’t want to get too off-topic though, so I’ll just leave it at that. I just find the idea of any character, not just Goh, to not meet other characters because they’re “not related to their goal in any way” to be ridiculous. Characters are allowed to meet other characters, that’s how Ash has so many friends and rivals.

At the very least they’re battle had better have a conclusion. I’ll be mad if we get another Ash vs. Dawn in BW scenario.
Given that this battle is a major one with Hyper Class on the line between the 2, I’m sure that the writers will give it one. I don’t think they’d dangle that above the battle if they didn’t plan for there to be a winner.

Goh met Ash's SM classmates despite how none of them really relate to his goal, so I don't see why Iris would be any different. He's a new main character getting a chance to interact with an older one, which is one of the highlights of previous traveling companions making returns in the first place. Goh and Iris could still have some interesting interactions just because they've never met before. I don't think that Iris not connecting to Goh's goal means that they shouldn't meet.

Ah, I didn’t realize that it was a PWC battle. That’s pretty neat that Iris is involved.

It would be really cool if she ended up as a finalist with Ash and wore her BW2 Champion outfit.

Yeah and they are already have a built in excuse for slowing things down. There are only 90 people in the Hyper Class. So movement isn't going to be nearly as rapid as it was in the lower classes.

I wouldn't mind it, but there are already two Dragon specialists in the Master 8 and I don't see this Dragonite rivalry being dragged out for years. Anyway, Gary is the one rival I think Ash should face in the Master 8 tournament. Unlike Iris, he's being touted as having changed (the clothes help) and one of the artists said she's glad that he's easy to draw, suggesting that he's going to be recurring.

Ash, Gary, Lance, Cynthia, Diantha, Raihan, Leon, ?

Do we know for a fact that Lance and Raihan are in the Master 8, though? Not to mention that Iris herself uses more than exclusively Dragons. I do agree that Gary would make a good rival to appear there too.

We don't know if Lance is participating this time around (he was runner up in the prior Coronation Series). But I see no reason why Lance wouldn't compete again. Raihan seems like a given since he fought Leon in this year's Coronation Series.

Speaking of the Master 8, I hope they throw some wildcards in there. For example, Giovanni being there would be cool IMO.

To be fair, the fact that both fought Leon and put up quite the fight at the very least heavily implies that they are, and it'd be a little strange if at least Raihan wasn't in the top 8, since in game canon he's the second strongest trainer in Galar after Leon to the point that it's said that Raihan is the one who's come closest to beating Leon out of anyone.

Ah heck, since even the games make Dragon-experts top teir, it would be no surprise here (though specialists of other types would be nice for some variety. Bug or Poison could certainly use some love for a change)

Okay. Hadn't thought of it like that. :)

I just hope the Hyper & Master classes are various game characters and/or they make up for how Normal and Super classes were basically underwhelming squash fights with Ash jobbing poor dopes.

Right, but we don’t know that either of them are in it. Either way, I still think there’s a chance for Iris. Anyway, what I said was I thought it would be cool; not that it would be likely.
