RIP Iris :(

Still, it would be a lot more interesting if she won. Arceus knows Cynthia needs to be taken down a peg.

Come to think of it...has she EVER lost? (In any media outside the Games for that matter?)

That's Ash's job, I imagine.

I promise you I have personally seen her lose in the games.;)
Edit: Actually I think I read she lost to Cyrus in one of the manga but I could be wrong.

I think we know who's gonna win. I'd be SHOCKED if Iris defeated the queen herself, but also kind of disappointed because we know it would lead to an Ash vs. Iris rematch we don't really need because we already had it. I'm sorry Iris. I feel bad for you, but I'm rooting for the queen, Champion Cynthia.

That's correct. In a way. Cyrus overpowered her and survived her Garchomp's Draco Meteor because it was imperfect. Cynthia's grandmother later berated her for having used the move without perfecting it first, telling Cynthia that her Champion status had gone to her head.

While I'm not a Cynthia fanboy, I feel that last bit being a bit insulting. I could never see Cynthia being one to get a swelled head.

Hoping for Excadrill here
Then again Iris doing better than Cynthia than Alain did against Leon would make no sense as Ash defeated Iris twice (once at champion level) and never defeated Alain

I am also having doubts, since a tweet about this episode got deleted.

However, in the case it is real, Shirona should win.
Iris has been very inconsistent, it is hard to reconcile her BW self with the current.
And there is no explanation on how she became a Champion.

Iris winning would be another bad move, it may involve another asspull.
Besides, many don't want either Shirona losing or Iris rebattling Satoshi.

That is NOT correct and it would be very nice if you didn't try to twist the narrative to justify your complaints. Cynthia never lost to Cyrus; he escaped. Those are two different things. And Draco Meteor was imperfect because she (and especially Garchomp) was angry at Cyrus (and herself) for what he did to Celestic Town.

Speaking of the manga, I think the conflict between Cyrus and Cynthia could possibly be symbolic since Cyrus' ancestor is implied to to be Yamato/Wajin (Cyllene's Japanese name is Shimaboshi) while Cynthia's grandmother is Ainu-coded (because of her house in Platinum). When Cyrus attacks the village it is also like he attacks Cynthia's culture and identity. Makes sense that she would be upset and struggle with controlling her emotions. If you look at it that way it's almost like a hate crime.

Interesting coincidence that Iris in episode BW101 seemed to experience some kind of assimilation since she went to an all white school and couldn't adapt which in turn lead to her stop eating (hint of bullying or depression?). Perhaps this could be compared to the irl assimilation of Native American children?

Maybe that is why she feels more attached to Cynthia (other than the fact that she is the first female champion) than Lance. Perhaps she can't relate to Lance in the same way even if she presumably respects him as a dragon master (she trained with his cousin Clair after all).

I know she didn't lose. I said "in a way". As in, she failed to finish him off.

My guess is Champion Cynthia uses Kommo-o and we know she'll use Milotic. Then her fearsome Garchomp. I'd love to see Iris bring out Excadrill.
Yeah, if Kommo-o gets used -which imo should happen because otherwise no Alola Pokemon will get to appear in the Masters 8 tournament, and I'd like for Pokemon from all generations to appear in the finals of a world tournament. Shame that it looks like Johto won't be getting any love, though... (unless Steven uses Skarmory, but idk how big the odds of that are)- then it should be in the fight against Iris. I want Ash to fight as few Dragon-types as possible from now on because he's spent a good chunk of Journeys fighting against Dragon specialists and it's getting more than a little stale. Obviously he has to fight Cynthia's Garchomp anyway because that's her ace, so nothing can be done about that, but when it comes to the rest of Cynthia's team Ash should fight more type variety.

Another reason it would be cool for Kommo-o to be used against Iris is because it could be seen as Cynthia subtly mentoring Iris, as in "if you want to become a Dragon Master, try to overcome both my Dragons!" which would be pretty cool. In fact, Milotic being used here could also be taken as Cynthia subtly mentoring Iris, since Milotic actually has access to quite a few Dragon-type attacks itself.
