You can pick almost any Pokémon that evolves, with certain exceptions listed in the first post (pseudos, fossils, Happiny, Feebas, Munchlax, Larvesta, Porygon). I would recommend not picking something available in the Pokémart ( http://bmgf.bulbagarden.net/f399/%2A-pok%C3%A9mart-%2A-55968/ ) because they're quite easy to get, but if you want one of those no one will stop you (except those banned as starters).
