What they need, is something so full of win in the next 8 chapters that it will convince the anime people to do it anyway, something so awesome that video games and live action movies would be created!
For me, I decide what a dark series is based on its tone. A series can have a lot of violence or death, but still come across as very childish. Shows like Fullmetal Alchemist and Puella Magi Madoka Magica come across as dark to me not only because of the events contained in the series, but how the characters react to them and the overall themes. For example, with Fullmetal Alchemist, the whole point of the show could be seen as redemption - Ed and Al want to get back what they lost due to a mistake made in desperation. With Madoka Magica, there's the theme that even actions with the best of intentions can horribly backfire.
