Don't be so hard on yourself.
The secret to a successful roleplay: Plan on finishing it. I always plan my roleplays with a perceivable end to them. A stopping point. A goal. That's why they (usually) work.
I'm not into the whole "freeform, we'll just see what happens" plot-development craze sweeping the forums at the moment. I think it's lazy. If you want to create a successful roleplay, plan it out from start to finish and make sure every perceivable role in it is fun enough that you would want to play it.
