Oh, yeah, when does the voting period close? It's already the 1st of August here, but timezones confuse me. I imagine we'll get a few votes in the last six hours or so.
With speech? Hmm . . . let's see. If the speech is followed by a speech tag - something that directly explains how the character was talking - then you use a comma. For example:
"Hi, Ren," she said.
"Elly!" Ren exclaimed.
Both of those directly reference how the character is saying the line. In general, if the verb is a synonym of, or close in meaning to, the word 'said', you should go with a comma. (Note that exclamation points and question marks fit under 'comma' here) If the following sentence is unrelated, use a full stop. Like:
"Hey, Ren! Come over here." Natasha beckoned him across the room.
"What do you want?" He crossed the room and stood looking down at the note on the table. "Who's that from?"
Note that in the second example, the question mark counts as a full stop.
Perhaps the simplest way to put it is this: if what comes after the speech marks is a full sentence (like those in the second set of examples I gave), then use a full stop at the end of the speech. Be careful, though. Sentences like 'Ren exclaimed' can be full sentences, but they're not in this context. So basically, if it's a speech tag, comma. If it's an independent sentence, full stop. If it needs an exclamation point or a question mark, just put it in there. I'm not very good at explaining things like these. There are several helpful guides on the internet to help you if you look for them.
The only problem with that is the speech tags. It should be
