  • "Though Dento being in an arc of 7-8 contests and a Grand Festival, giving us epic sparkly battles and a chance to see Dawn along the way... I wouldn't say no to that. They should so meet in the Hoenn GF finals and tie to prove that they are both incredibly awesome and clearly superior to all :p"

Dawn was always known for her confidence or overconfidence since the start of her journey. She may be less sure of herself and she doesn't act as big-headed, but personality wise and character interaction wise, she didn't really change much.

Her interaction with all her rivals remained exactly the same throughout all of DP. Her interactions with Ash and with Brock (lol), did not change at all.

I watched DP1 and DP191 back to back recently, and what struck me is how similar Dawn was, almost as if the entire journey didn't happen besides the extra Pokemon she had.

Very strange. As I thought May felt like a very different character by the end of her run, and to a lesser extent Misty too.
Yes I am in a ranting mood. :D

Anyway, I don't see why people make it sound like Dawn was constantly struggling.
Also, what personality growth did Dawn really have? She is almost the same character in DP191 as she was in DP1.
But some of it went nowhere. What did Dawn gain from Ambipom's loss? Dawn releases Ambipom in the next ep, and she never ever battles Kenny again. So what did the loss to Kenny do, other than to give Kenny a pity victory in the show?

Yes, she was always practicing appeals, but I feel like most of it was just fluff. Zoey would yell at her in her daydreams (lol), causing Dawn to think she wasn't good enough. Then when she does do appeals, sometimes they're never used in contests or she does something completely different.

I also don't see why the ice/bubble appeals Dawn did are viewed as a big deal when May did the same appeals with Skitty and Squirtle. Ice appeals got so redundant into DP.
I thought the only two of Dawn's losses that truly motivated her were her appeal losses.

We all knew Dawn would lose her first Contest, so that was expected. We all pretty much figured Mamoswine would cost her one contest as well. And the one she loses to Kenny just felt like a pity loss.

So to be honest, its really only the two appeal round losses that felt like a big deal. The other three, especially the Kenny loss, were not viewed as a big deal.
Kenny beat Ambipom with a cheap one-hit KO if I remember correctly. Besides he was never a threat. Piplup beat Prinplup in Dawn's first victory. Jessie beat Kenny of all people fair and square, and then kenny bombs out of the Grand Festival.

And while Ursula was definitely talented, the fact that Dawn beat her cheaply two of the times (especially the GF one), is upsetting.

Dawn had no struggles in terms of rivalries. I mean, I'd consider Zoey a struggle if she was presented more of a rival and less of a mentor, and if Zoey wasn't always viewed to be right every single time with nobody questioning her or her decisions.

Tsk, tsk. They even made the GF easy for Dawn to reach the top, with her battling Jessie in the Top 4 and having Zoey take out Nando instead. The whole GF was shoe-horned to give Dawn an easy way out.
Its a shame Dawn had no struggles against her rivals in Contests. Kenny and Ursula were treated like punching bags, she doesn't even battle Nando, Jessie was also treated throwaway in the GF, and Zoey was just treated like an invincible opponent.

When you stop to think about it, Dawn had no rival she had to overcome. Zoey was a mentor, and everyone else were treated like punching bags. Nando doesn't even count as she never battles him.
Its funny how Dawn's departure left minimal impact on the fandom except for a few of the more obsessive fans.
Piplup once said he used to like every new saga of Pokemon more than the previous, and liked every new girl more than the one before.

Now he doesn't like BW as much as DP, and he doesn't seem to like either Iris or Dento.
I totally understand what you mean.

I'm on chapter three right now, and I have to say I'm liking the imagery and characters. You do a very good job of assigning traits to each person. The only problems I'm seeing are grammatical. Try not to end your sentences with prepositions. It sounds picky, but I hope it'll improve the structure of your sentences. You have a great vocabulary, so try to avoid using words like "things". I think it's alright to use it in dialogue, but when writing as the narrator I think it's better to use more creative words.

Forgive me if I don't post a review in the thread for a while, though.
I wish this had been done a generation earlier.

They could have had Jessie win contests in Battle Frontier and enter that Grand Festival, and in DP we could have had serious TR.

It almost feels like its too little, too late, but at the same time I am very happy for the change.
