You were very lucky, I guess. I caught a shiny Bibarel and a shiny Raticate before I heard of either of those methods but someone accidentally erased the game save and I lost them.
The best way to find a shiny? That would be the PokéRadar (since it's tedious going on the GTS in search of a foreign Ditto). It can increase the chances of finding a shiny to 1/200 if done properly.
Masuda Method is wherr you breed two compatible Pokémon from foreign (different language) game together (like an American Ditto and a Japanese Chikorita). The game recognizes this and increase the chances that the offspring are shiny by 4×, effectively making it 4/8192 or 1/2048 chance of getting a shiny. This is good if you want to get a shiny with Egg moves.
Well, they are very rare. The chances of finding one are normal 1/8192. However, there are methods people use to increase the odds such as chaining with the PokéRadar and breeding with the Masuda Method.
Well the official term is Alternate Coloration but most fans use the term shiny to refer to them because of the stars that appear when the Pokémon is sent out.
