It wouldn't have to be anything bigger than what Gary got in the last AG episode. Is it really too much to expect the writers to come up with a new reason for Ash to go to another region?
It's occurred to me that if the main plot of Black and White revolves around separating Pokémon from humans, and that will obviously be carried over to the anime, then Ho-Oh should take a part in preventing that from happening. Ho-Oh looks for a person that can restore the relationship between humans and Pokémon; in the anime, we know that that person is Ash.
I don't have high hopes for seeing past characters in Isshu due to the lack of proximity and Game Freak's apparent obsession with making everything look new (hopefully just for the first part of the games, but that does include the story climax). But in the anime, Ho-Oh can be the reason that Ash will go to Isshu; if the region is so far away, Ash should have a good reason to go there, and what better reason can there be than being told by Ho-Oh that he has an important role to fulfill?
I gather from one of your recent posts that you haven't read the spoiler about Ash using only the Sinnoh team against Paul, who will use East Sea Gastrodon, Ninjask, Froslass, Aggron, Drapion and Electivire. So that means that Glalie can't be covered in that battle.
It would be beyond ridiculous if Quilava were the only Pokémon from the Nando battle not to be reused. I'm fairly sure that it will be used against the Darkrai trainer and that none of the Hoenn Pokémon will, but I'd be quite upset if that prediction turned out to be wrong.
