  • Well judging by the fact it was first announced on TV Tokyo and hasn't been announced anywhere else yet, you would assume TV Tokyo would be making the announcement. But it could be announced anywhere, I guess.

I don't think we should worry about the January 8th announcement being a spin off game. They probably would have revealed it at Jump Festa if so, and they wouldn't make a big deal about a spin off game by putting a pending announcement message on TV. I think the announcement would more likely be a Wii U Pokemon RPG rather than a spin off (though I don't think it would be a Wii U game either). If its game related, Im sure its involving the mainline games. By the time Gen VI is released it may be over 2 and 1/2 years since the 3DS was out, which is completely unacceptable IMO.
    This entire thing is odd.

Even if it isn't the Gen VI announcement, I guess it's not like we would have to wait long anyway since it should be revealed by the end of Jan. The fact it was aired after the game trailer and the fact the announcement is on a night with no Pokemon anime should hopefully be confirmation that it isn't anime related. It would make much more sense for them to put the announcement on the Thursday after the anime episode if it was going to be anime related.

I wonder how the announcement will be handled though? They will obviously be airing something for the announcement, so if the announcement is Gen VI then what exactly do you think TV Tokyo will show us?
What does Serebii's timing have to do with it? He easily could have been asleep, out or just been busy and didn't pick up on it until later. The fandom expands out of just forums. A huge part of the fandom is on Twitter/Tumblr/Youtube. General fans have taken notice too, thanks to video game websites picking up on and reporting the news. These forums have been dying down lately, I'm assuming because of the busy Christmas/New Year time. Once we start getting closer to Jan 8 Im sure the hype will pick up.

I'm just confused by the whole thing still. Why would TV Tokyo be the first to reveal that there will be an announcement? Why has no other faction said anything? Why is it on a Tuesday of all days? All seems a bit odd. I'm going to try not to get hyped up, as we could easily be disappointed. It's not like they haven't disappointed us before.
I'm not just talking about here - the news about it seems to be more dead here compared to anywhere else. I've seen numerous threads/videos on Gamefaqs, Youtube, Twitter, Tumblr today about the announcement. Lots of people are speculating.

We should find out more about the announcement soon, they at least have to give us a time as to when the announcement will be rather than just 'January 8 on TV Tokyo'.
The news of the announcement has spread all over the internet like wildfire. Everyone seems to be talking about it. I really hope it wont disappoint.

I just want the official website to state something, or some other source to state something. The fact it has only been mentioned by TV Tokyo is odd.
Retro Studios will definitely announce a project next year, and if history is any indication, it may even be released during 2013, like Donkey Kong. It could be the rumored Yoshi's Land. Metroid is also due (though a 3DS title may come before a Wii U one), and I suppose there are a few other possibilities of franchises without an entry lately.

Anyway, I don't think Game Freak would (or should) work on a Wii U title before a 3DS one comes. Pokémon has handheld-orientation on its DNA -- still, that doesn't mean there shouldn't be a major big-screen title at some point. It doesn't have to be by Game Freak, but they must be involved in it somehow.

Speaking on which; Smash's January 6th appearance of Masuda and Morimoto (if that's happening) may point to something. Is it possible that Morimoto will direct the first Generation VI games? He did an excellent job in HGSS, I hope we see more of him.
There will probably be another briefing in January, but in the later half. In any case, I expect something related to Generation VI in January 8th.

What about a Wii U game? Nintendo Greece's marketing director posts on a Greek forum I visit; in the yearly Awards, he stated in the Most Anticipated Wii U Game category that if he could include two unannounced titles, he would only include one of the (three) games he voted for -- and the unannounced ones would be above it. I don't think he is a big Pokémon fan, but who wouldn't be excited if a major title released on Wii U?

Very unlikely, but what if Generation VI debuted on Wii U by Game Freak themselves? Sounds like a crazy move (especially if it was just Wii U instead of Wii U and 3DS), but it would be super interesting. Heck, even if it was [sic] just a proper (ie. not Battle Revolution) companion game released closely with the 3DS versions -- with more vision as far as connectivity is concerned -- it would still be a major source of excitement.
Not anything planned. I also doubt such a big announcement would come from Direct; most likely a Shareholders meeting. Here is the document of meetings.

For reference, there was a meeting last January, but on the second half (and this kind of briefng apparently happens every year in January 27/28/29/30). Most of the announcements were technical (though major), but NSMB2 was announced, which could be thought as a game of equal magnitude of importance with Pokémon.
January 8th is a weird date, but it would be abusing the power of hype and word-of-mouth if this wasn't huge news. It's also not untypical to make an announcement of an announcement (or even an announcement of an announcement of an announcement) in the game industry, despite the fact that Black and White came (arguably) out of nowhere. I think this is related directly to Generation VI -- this is of course yet to be seen, as one would expect there would be more sources promoting the announcement. For now, I am entertained (and I believe so is TPC) by the power of social media. I so wish advertising campaigns were more grounded, like this.

As a side note, I must confess that I agree with Mitchman. Not saying that this is what they usually do, but Black and White were announced with much more class than usual, and I hope this eventually becomes common practice. I find sources like PokéSmash a very undignified way to make big announcements. While that doesn't reflect the potential quality of the product, it does indicate the way TPC treats the brand, which is (repeatedly) unacceptable in the last few years. As for the Nintendo and TPC thing -- while from a loyalty sense TPC is Nintendo, I find myself constantly wishing Nintendo was more directly involved with the franchise (the video games part, at least). How wonderful it would have been if things were like in the first and second generation...

By the way, we were recently discussing with a friend about how Nintendo's involvement on media outside video games is minimal (and usually outsourced), and how this is quite the waste, as few companies own such big IPs. We ended up thinking that it would be a great idea to transform The Pokémon Company into a generic "Nintendo Media" -- using their experience in media outside video games would be an instant, huge first step. I just realized that this would also be quite positive for Pokémon as well.
True, I didn't catch that part. Could it have to do with Masuda's Smash appearance too? This is a bit crazy, but if Masuda is appearing on the Jan 13th Smash and lets say the games were announced Jan 8th, he would be able to reveal details and pictures/videos on Smash.. or new Pokemon. Those two things could coincide, but I doubt it. Seems a bit far fetched.

But yeah I am doubting its anime related now. Im curious to see if the official website is going to mention it and what it will say about it.
Hm. Interesting, the announcement could be anything. I saw what you said in the thread and agree that its very odd the announcement is on Tuesday of all days, with no Pokemon related show. Very odd.

If it was a trailer pertaining to episode N or something of that manner, you would think they would air it on a Thursday after the Pokemon episode.
I don't think Tv tokyo itself will make an annoucement. This is so random I can't really see what they will announce...
    Maybe a new promotionnal video?
Yes this is odd, Tuesday is an odd day too for an annoucement. Wasn't the first 5G annoucement a Friday? Also I think the names of Black&White were revealed on a Friday. 8th January is before the Coro Coro so it could be an exclusiveness.
"I can't tell about the Ruby & Sapphire remakes, if it should come out you'll know soon enough"

The screenshot, I tried to post it in your profil, but when i do, my message is empty. : ttp://twitpic.com/bqdjp7
They don't give up and i don't really understand their argument, and Game freak trolling us doesn't help that.
Pokemon' kara, min'na ni tsutaetai saishin jōhō! !

So, a big annoucement is planned for January 8 . A Preview of BW2 aired this morning on Tv Tokyo, and just after there was that message.
Honestly, I don't want it to be Gen VI, unless it turns out to be like that LoZ: Oracle scenario I wanted. I'd much prefer a WiiU game made by Game Freak taking place in another region. I don't think adding another 150 creates (30 of which would undoubtedly be legendaries and alternate forms of legends) solves the problem.
Is there even a reason to talk to people about stuff here anymore? I know I've more or less been absent in the past few months (combination of being in my last year of undergrad and volunteering in labs), but talking to people is just really frustrating.

It doesn't help that there's nothing in Gen V worth talking about and any interest I had in it died when learning what Masuda actually had in store for it and sequels being an afterthought.
