  • I agree, hopefully the 3DS will push them to want to include even more in the games. I really hope that they go the sequel route again next time for the Gen VI games but VASTLY improve on it. What I'm worried if that they might just revert back to the usual 3rd version which would be even worse. Masuda's idea of having two third versions made me cringe. They need to do sequels again but this time actually nail it by adding an extra region and not just new areas into the current region.

    Also, some interesting news:

    ----------
Following on from the teaser trailer revealed at the end of the recent movie in Japan, it has been announced that, as per usual, the first details of the next movie, due for release in Summer 2013, will be given within CoroCoro next month, due out on December 15th. This movie is to feature the Mythical Pokémon Genesect. We'll provide the details as and when they come.
    ----------
Do they usually start revealing details on the movie this early, in December? If they don't, then its very interesting that they would be revealing information about it earlier than usual. This really makes me think they will reveal more at Jump Festa too.
I'm just so excited and curious about the Gen VI games. I'm super curious as to how it's all going to look on the 3DS. The advancement from GBA to DS was big, but this one could be bigger IMO since its a MUCH larger engine and allows for so much more depth and detail. If they continue to stick completely to sprites, I really hope they fix the battle sprites since the pixelated sprites in B/W and B2W2 are really annoying. Also, the memory of the 3DS will allow them to make much larger games so I hope they take advantage of it and give us a much larger region or dare I say it, two regions.

I'm getting sick of the one region formula, I've always wanted them to have a second region in the games in which the story and game continues. Obviously not like Kanto in G/S/C/HG/SS, since it pretty much had no story - it was just an extra area to explore. I've wanted them to put an extra region in which actually has the story continue, or begins another story. Some games released yearly on much harder platforms to develop games (eg. Assassins Creed on the PS3) have HUGE lands and HUGE stories so it always baffles me as to why the Pokemon games are usually so limited in their approach and constantly end before the league. I want to see them continue from there and into a new region at some point, but I'm not sure they would ever do that. Do you agree?
B2/W2 are the first main series Pokemon games I've refused to buy. I wish I could say that I hope Gamefreak will learn from their mistakes, but they seem so content with how B2/W2 turned out. I'm kind of baffled by their behavior.
Interesting, I always find information about the development of the games very intriguing. I think I read once that they have two teams which both work on a different game so they are developing two at the same time, I can't remember if it was from a solid source or was just someone posting on a forum but I remember reading that somewhere. Do you see anyway that Gen VI would be released in June? If they want to have international releases in the same year from now on then it seems possible, but theres always the case that they could just translate faster. Translation always seems too slow, I don't know why they take a minimum of 5 months - surely it can be done much faster.

Agreed, I just don't see a possible way of him staying in Unova. He's done everything he can do, he is clearly going to another region. I read what you wrote in that thread and it seems plausible. Kanto seems so boring to visit yet again though, even Johto would be nicer - but I guess since Kanto/Johto are connected the filler saga could have Ash in both locations.
I find it odd HG/SS took longer to develop than Diamond/Pearl did. Granted, they did have to do both Kanto & Johto from scratch - it still just seemed like it would be finished quicker than an entire new generation as they new the main layout, story etc. It definitely seems possible that if they started work on Gen VI within the first six months of having gotten the development kit that they can surely have it finished in time for a release next year.

Hopefully there will be a hint! What I'm worried about happening is the fact that all will happen with the Eevee is Virgil giving it to Ash - that seems so typical of the anime to do. The promotion of Eevee is really random though, it just seems odd to come out of no where (merchandise wise and anime wise), especially at a pivotal point in the anime. I don't see any way the anime is going to stretch until September (which is probably when the next game will be released), even if they stretch it out with some Plasma arc. There will surely be some sort of filler saga, they can't keep Ash in Unova for much longer after the League.
I have a question if you know the answer, how long does a brand new generation take Gamefreak to develop? By that I mean the first games of a generation such as Ruby/Sapphire, Diamond/Pearl, Black/White etc. I think I heard it was 4 years, but I can't remember if that is really the case. I know HG/SS took just under 3 years to develop. I'm wondering because Gamefreak hasn't even had the 3DS development kit for 3 years yet (it'll be 3 years in January I believe), so if Gen VI is being released next year I'd imagine they are working extremely hard on it to get it out for next year. Considering that no new game was released in Japan in 2011 - that means 2013 will have to have something. Masuda has said he tries to avoid having big gaps between games, and we only get a 2 year gap very rarely and considering we just had one, I'm sure that we will be getting Gen VI next year. I don't understand why some say that 2013 has a possibility of having no new game.

I'm fully expecting a Gen VI announcement either just before Jump Festa, an announcement at Jump Festa long with a simultaneous announcement on the official website or the announcement being in January. Then of course, in February we'll see a new Pokemon revealed for the movie.

How is the whole Eeveelution thing in the anime going? I don't keep up with it, so have there been any hints that the Eevee may eventually evolve into a brand new evolution? I'm also curious as to where they plan to take the anime after the League, since I read that the League will be finished in January at the latest.
I don't really care for many of the so called patterns a lot of fans are trying to use to justify a new Eeveelution (and it's type, for that matter), and if it weren't for that one single Eevee with a whole team, I'd probably just ignore the idea, but I'd be surprised if they didn't do something relating to it. That said, you have a point in them doing rather random things. Mewtwo comes to mind, the thing was hyped in front, but turned out really random (at least compared to expectations).

Of course, it shouldn't take too long until gen VI is revealed anyways, so for me it doesn't really matter what gets unveiled when.

The problem I have with something like ancient Genesect would be that in the past, it's treated more as an entire species, and Team Plasma just revived a fossil and modified it to suit them. I don't like the idea of it having an ancient forme as a single pokémon, when I don't see much separating such a thing from any other fossil pokémon in general. And I agree, starting of a new generation with a new forme being one of the frontrunners is not something I see as very viable.
Important, no. But if that's not a direct in your face hint with all the other things we have now, then I don't know what is.

That aside, I've seen some people suggest some form of Origin Genesect. I don't really believe such a thing could be the star (at least with Genesect's presumed role), but how do you look at the probabilities of it getting a new forme in gen VI? I'm not sure if I can ignore that option as of yet.
So with the Eeveelution tournament and all, how long do you think it is before gen VI time?

GC: How closely involved is series creator Satoshi Tajiri in the more recent games? Did he work directly on Black/White 2?

JM: He’s the president of Game Freak, but he doesn’t have much day-to-day input into the game anymore. He does play the game for testing though, and that still applies for Black and White 2 as well.

As a game company president, he must have a lot of obligations, but I want him to at least oversee and provide input on a future game... :p
If I recall correctly, when Iwata was the president of Hal, he did produce and oversee (maybe even direct) some titles.
    2006 / Diamond and Pearl
    2007 / -
    2008 / Platinum
    2009 / HeartGold and SoulSilver
    2010 / Black and White
    2011 / -
    2012 / Black 2 and White 2

Sure, there some blank, but that's still pretty close to an annualization. Plus, there's always the chance we might at some point start seeing console RPGs again. And there's also the thing that third versions (which in a technical sense are also kind of a blank) might stop being. In any case, I'd rather that blank was before each main release rather right than after it. But the current model is probably more profitable.
A new evolution of Eevee isn't gonna appear on the League. They don't reveal a new pokemon if we don't have any reason to think about Gen VI becoming soon except early Genesect reveal and the need of Nintendo to release Pokemon on 3DS (but they're two good reasons). Specially when we don't know any information. The Blaziken case was different because the Gen III are revealed (and some appearing in the anime) way before Blaziken is debuted. (The Blaziken situation is more comparable to Gary's Electivire).

And sometimes the gap between the release of the first pokemon and the games actually came out it's variable. In Gen III lasted 19 months, in Gen IV a whopping 28 months and in Gen V only 7 months.

And apart from Gen VI, I see from Gamefreak making these games next year (and this can come in May/June):
-RS Remakes (Rayquaza appears in merchandise recently)
-Kanto re-remakes (I see some Mewtwo, a lot of Charizard and exist some rare merch with the Kanto Starters around (including Red).
-A Generation V game but in a new region without 1) new pokemon or 2) few pokemon, and of it will be new evolutions of old pokemon (including Gen V?) in the major part. I note this because some merchandise recently that features Chikorita, Torchic and Piplup (not the rest of the region's starters) marked with Best Wishes , and the three aren't promote the actual games.

And of course, you won't see placeholder until the pokemon is about to release. Specially becauser to evade a erroneous release they aren't start to sell the secret pokemon until some time after the reveal (1 month generally).

And apart from that, a new episode features Axew in the middle of the League. I think that Axew will evolve because doesn't make sense otherwise. But if you find Genesect early release suspicious, I also find that is suspicious that Axew could evolve because the new movie trailer in the same date Iris might not appear because has left the cast in the meantime.
Yes, I realized my mistake rather late. In any case, what I meant to say is that the previous console generation was more profitable to them than the GBA one, and BW were by no means a financial mediocrity considering they pushed things as much as they did.

In any case, it seems like Pokémon main series is becoming annualized. Can you imagine a consistent one-game-per year? Especially now that third versions might be making their exit, this could go anywhere from incredible to incredibly tiring.
I was speaking relatively (in other words, based on how big Game Freak was back then, and how big it is now). With Ruby and Sapphire they had to make a completely new engine, while Black and White was mostly design and editor work, besides the modifications they made to the DP engine. It's hard to calculate exactly how much it costed them, but if you consider that RS released two years after Crystal, while with BW it was only one year after HGSS, you can guess that they spent less money in them. Also, it must have been obviously easier to work with the DS when they were making BW than it was working their first GBA project.

For Black and White specifically, it must also have to do with the fact that they were probably expecting much lower numbers, given that they made them on DS. I bet B2W2 wouldn't exist if BW hadn't surpassed their expectations.

I'm sure they shouldn't be bragging about the lower sales, but financially they must be very stable since, if not even more robust than in Generation III.
Most games make more than 75% of their sales in their first month of release. Higher profile ones may achieve something better, like just 50% or so. Games like Pokémon and Mario are known to have really long legs, and 3 million (about 20% of total sales?) in a year, after a relatively long period after release, is very impressive.

Of course, it's also what you said: relatively speaking, they may be even lower than Ruby and Sapphire's sales, but do note that they were also made in a much lower budget, and the numbers themselves are enormous. The DS engine was used like no other in Pokémon series -- it delivered 5 SKUs. That's something only achieved by the GB engine (which I assume is mutual between RGBY and GSC) before, and even then, they were actually only two completely original games (in contrast to 4).

In any case, VGChartz is very usually inaccurate anyway. Just rough estimations. If you want some more accurate numbers (just for Japan, unfortunately), check this. Bummer, the file is down. I think it went down to at least late 90's. At least the threads are still up.

Thinking about this, I wonder how the Gen VI engine will be. With Game Freak owning 30% of TPC, they must be getting around half of each sale's profits. They have no excuse in presenting something that isn't, in artistic and technical value, in the high-tier of 3DS games. There are a lot of ways Pokémon needs to grow up in, and technical is one of them.
    Good luck with your teaching!

Most math classes are purpose-centric in engineering, which is why the focus is not on proof, but rather on things students are going to need later. Granted, the "difficulty" (or rather the focus) is indeed scaled. The first year has "generic" maths; I doubt the first Calculus class or Linear Algebra is very different from what is taught in Maths, at least in our case. But after that, they get gradually more purpose oriented. In any case, I personally think Calculus should be taught the same in every course, especially Engineering. It's essentially brain gymnastics and provides a way of thinking everyone should be trying to achieve.

Hopefully, the furniture items aren't any indication. The date can't be a coincidence, can it? At least this would be better than nothing (although this is arguable :p). I'm still hoping for RSE: Anniversary Edition, despite the fact that it quite unlikely at this point. The only reason I think it's not impossible is because eShop items are usually announced no more than a couple weeks (usually a week or even a couple days) before releasing.
See, "theoretical studies" is a corresponding term to "positive studies" in Greek high schools' study directions -- I should have thought that if one is non-proper, the other would be too. :p

They are terms just to conveniently distinguish studies such as legal education, philosophy and philology from studies such as mathematics, physics, chemistry and so on. They are indeed nothing more than terms, as they're extremely rough. :p

You seem to fit the mathematical background. In fact, that's pretty much what I had in mind for some reason!

I study Electrical and Computer Engineering -- more to the Computer Engineering part, with a preference to software. So, you were mostly right. :)
