  • You know what would be neat? An introductory level (an evolved form of the game's intro) where the player did more than just answer the Professor's questions. That level could determine how experienced the player is, and carry that knowledge all through the game. It could also be used as a tutorial for more inexperienced players, so that tutorial-esque elements didn't have to be spread around the whole game. Anyways, we'll see.

By the way, always been wondering. What are you studying? If I took a guess, I'd say something related to a science (I would use the term positive science, but I'm not sure if that's a proper term in English) rather than something theoretical.
That's true. When the game starts, it could well examine the level of the player. I confess, however, that I'm a fan of a one-level difficulty in cases. There are games that handle difficulty levels very well -- but I hate it when Easy is essentially a level with stupidly bad design and hard is just normal with added spikes. A good implementation of difficulty in RPGs (including Pokémon) could be a dynamic system that undestands how experienced the player is and adjusts AIs and stages (including how generous in hints NPCs are) alike.

That is a problem with some new Nintendo games. People complained about Skyward Sword's "spread" tutorial elements. Mario 3D Land is also considered too easy. Personally, I don't mind my games being easy as long as there is some kind of reward in its gameplay. 3D Land for example, while easy, had a genius in its level design. I thoroughly enjoyed each of its levels, and realizing how levels made you play them was rewarding. Pokémon could alike have battles be easy by teaching you (or leading you) into interesting and unique battle styles without you realizing it. But it doesn't do that. NPC AIs and teams are pathetic sometimes, and hints are way to obvious.

I do remember that Gen I and Gen II NPCs had more character to them. Can you imagine the (drunk) old man in Viridian in Gen V? He'd be all like "Hey, is that Oak's Parcel in your bag? Oak is a friend of mine. He asked me to tell you to deliver this to him if I saw you. Go to Pallet Town. It's just under Route 1." That also explains why Teachy TV was thought to be essential in FRLG. RGBY indeed expected more of the players.
I don't want to sound like a killjoy, since I don't believe B2W2 are particularly different quality-wise than any other Pokémon games. What triggered my annoyance at first was how NPCs treated me as if I never played a Pokémon game before. I guess it's that it's really not been such a long time since the last game, and I'm just not into it right now. To be honest though, I expected to have missed playing after one year or so...

Like I said, I don't think it's B2W2's fault, but mine. To be fair, their being not quite refreshing doesn't help much, however. (But who would expect a sequel to be refreshing?)

Anyway, I'm really not the whiny type, so, I'm a little troubled overanalyzing this. I'll get around to playing Black 2 when I feel like enjoying doing so.

Have you make any progress with your ideas on the novel?
B2W2 are a little better than unplayable to me. It might not be the games' fault (but rather mine, for being a long time player -- Game Freak probably doesn't think experienced players deserve too much respect), but I'm literally sick of the condensed level of clichés gathered at the beginning, that I find no motivation to continue. Might as well say that it wasn't much different with BW, but BW came as the first new game after 4 years -- not counting the, no matter what, delightful HGSS.

Sorry to disappoint, but I'm not in my best with Pokémon right now.
Especially Sugimori has been relatively consistent in his old artwork, but thankfully, not completely -- and not on newer art. Personally, I always thought either Bulbasaur or Charmander fit better for Red. And Blue and Leaf don't help much, since both are considerably compatible with Charmander/Squirtle and Squirtle/Bulbasaur. Either way, it doesn't matter too much, I guess. I'm just curious which starter they would choose if they made an animated trailer for, say, FRLG.

Cool that Pokéathlon has a legend. Even if they haven't put much thought in it, it's a neat touch to what is, by far, the most interesting mini-game in the main series. Could "the sky" mean the stars?
Wow, I hadn't seen that artwork of Red and Blue. Obviously, they aren't by Sugimori, but they look very much to be by Ohmura -- which makes sense, since they are Generation V artwork. I wish we had the full artworks... By the way, this seems to suggest Red's starter is Bulbasaur and Blue's one is Charmander.
Holy shit, this is actually pretty epic. The main villains from the first three chapters, before Special became a shadow of its former self. I didn't know what to think back then, since I wanted Special to follow the game's plot more closely (and I'd probably say something similar for the anime). Thinking back, Special's quality fell because it stopped taking too much liberty with the game's plots. In retrospect, I enjoy an evil Lance and a psycho Pryce more than seeing the villains I already enjoyed in the game in manga form. Sird is also in the HGSS chapter, isn't she? She's also a relatively interesting antagonist.

Are we sure this isn't going to lead to the World Tournament in the B2W2 chapter? With the reunion of heroes, it would make sense to have a reunion of villains. I'm sure Kusaka would write something pretty interesting for the series' fans with this occasion -- even if in the game it's just a way for Trainers (and not necessarily the game's hero) to battle old characters in what seems to be no more than hypothetical battles.

I don't know if I like to see a reformed Giovanni. His morals would be interesting to explore, but I wouldn't want him to become another Magneto. I wouldn't say not to a good story that did that, though. But to me, the most natural evolution of Giovanni would be to become more powerful after losing to Red (and then Ethan). Fighting against Sird (along with the heroes) wouldn't seem out of character though. Team Rocket is based on Mafia/Yakuza, after all -- and those syndicates usually have a strict kind of morality, which Sird is likely not following. As the former boss of TR, that might be enough for Giovanni to oppose her.
Sorry if I became inactive here.

It seems that the November 4, 2012 episode of Pokemon Smash will be interesting looking by the said episode's description:

Using translations on the Internet, it says latest information, game, anime, and evolution of Eevee. I'll be guessing it pertains to Virgil's Eevee since it mentioned anime, but the latest information and game makes it interesting for me. I'll leave the text to you though since you can happen to translate Japanese texts.
Well, having the two dragons separate and then fusing at least addresses some discrepancies we had with the Abyssal Ruins. Though, now we don't know why they fused or what Kyurem really is.
The filming agency is also a big coincidence (for Pokéstar Studios), which makes White being from Aspertia (which is near) make sense.

Regarding 'Hugh', I'm just a little annoyed that they seem to differentiating rivals that have a set name with the ones that don't. Blue, Silver and even Pearl were treated as main characters, but from my understanding Cheren and Bianca have a more secondary role. Now, I haven't really read the BW chapter, but I remember this to be the case with Wally as well. That's a really senseless way of determining who is and who isn't a main character. I suppose that N is treated as a 'rival' in Special though, which is why Cheren and Bianca aren't nearly as prevalent to the story.

Speaking of which, if there was a World Tournament league with the "main characters" (meaning the game's playable characters, and the so-called "rivals"), would N appear? Giovanni or Cyrus would certainly not, but I wouldn't compare them to N at all. He may have been an antagonist, but he wasn't a villain -- and there's no doubt that despite the traditional title of 'Rival' not being attributed to him, he has been more of a rival to Hilbert/Hilda than, say, Bianca had. Ironically, he wasn't supposed to be 'Neutral', but on that matter he pretty much is.
It's pretty funny how they have two sets of the same starters on the single only occasion this is true to the game as well, yet they use them in a completely different way. It will be hard to incorporate Nate/Rosa's relationship to Hugh if they just convert them into Black/White though. On the other side, this won't be surprising as it is essentially the same thing they did with Kris and Lyra. And this is Special after all, so, they always take a small or big liberty with the background of each character. And I was a bit curious about what names they would come up with... It's a lame they called Hugh, Hugh. He was a nameable character, so, they should have gone for Grey or something. :p

Shame on Dr. Who for parking TARDIS just in front of Kris and Celebi and they don't show on this photo. Or are they lagging behind Marty McFly?
GSC's identity is defined more from what it introduced to the series than the fact that it was an indirect sequel to RGBY. B2W2's identity is completely defined by its status as a direct sequel.

A game can be a new generation game, a sequel or both. GSC is both, but more of the former, while B2W2 is only a sequel. Sure, some similarities are inevitable, but one can't make B2W2 to be a direct parallel to GSC.
Wow, that means that the only protagonist who didn't meet Jasmine is Red and Hilbert/Hilda -- unless they somehow met with the former in the World Tournament. :p

Still, that's an interesting reference. I wonder if Kris met Brendan/May in her time-travels. Olivine would be a no-brainer, considering there's more in the past to be shown -- like Jasmine being a Rock Gym Leader. If Kris was [sic] ever, say, a couple or three years prior to the RSE plot in Olivine, there would be some things to show.

I don't think the game's size will come to imply much this time around. Since they probably won't reuse assets from the old engine (I want to hope...), there won't be point in comparing the game's size with the old games' sizes. Compressed 3D models are fairly small in size, and the game's textures (which tend to catch some space) will probably be fairly cartoony, like Magnagate's. That said, MD makes a lot of use of randomly generated Dungeons, so, it probably didn't need as much of mapping -- we can assume Pokémon will be at least a bit larger than it. For reference, check this. Uprising has a comparable (if maybe a bit smaller) amount of content with Pokémon, models-wise; and the maps are huge (but not as plenty). I'd expect Generation VI to be anywhere between 1 and 2GB, although that might still not be saying anything.
I was thinking that he'd prefer his family to move in a place where he has family-friends to take care of them when he's not around.

But still, I think Game Freak was too steeped in tradition. Had RSE come after BW2, I have no doubt that Petalburg could have been a starting town for the game (or Little Root being made bigger with a gym).
Well, Bianca is the "Barry" of this gen... I guess a "proper" rivalry with a girl would only be if they ever give him a girl as his "main" rival like Gary/Paul/Trip - which might never happen
Richie I didn't mind, but Casey really seemed to be an actual rival at first and they just dropped her randomly without any real reason... and they did it just before the league too, it just made no sense... I think Bianca is still the first real girl rival Ash had... the fact she appeared a lot of eps already and will obviously take part in the league is enough for me... I also wish she could get better as a trainer in the anime, since I totally hated what they did to her in the games, but I can't help but think that's how they'll do it in the anime too...
She's already treated better than Casey, at least she'll be in the league... but she'll probably lose early on and eventually decide to become Juniper's assistance similarly to the games
Are we sure it's really just a month from now? it sure seems like they're taking their time... anyway, I'm ready to be disappointed and for this league to be the worst one so far (but hopefully they'll prove me wrong) and I'm more interested at what will happen after the league... the more they keep delaying it, the less time they'll have for the next saga... I can already tell whatever it'll be will probably be even more rushed than BF was
