  • More and more Nintendo games are becoming available for download on the eShop as the time goes. If my memory serves me right, only Kid Icarus is missing out of the major releases currently (there are some minor ones that are missing though -- like Rumble Blast; ironically, that should have been a download release in first place). I believe the plan is to eventually have each and every 3DS game launch concurrently via physical and digital distribution. It goes without saying that this will be the case for Generation VI as well.

I'm actually thinking of purchasing the game digitally, in fact. I was a bit hesitant, since I like having the boxes and the like, but it was recently stated that they plan on releasing an app that will transfer (or sync? not sure!) the cartridge save to the system (I'm not sure about the other way round). That may make me buy the game digitally on launch and get it boxed when it's on a budget price much later, or something like that.
Oh, right. He's 19, if I remember right. But indeed, he made some quite serious posts even back in the day.

Well, it's more of a choise than a necessity. I was also curious on why he couldn't become a more casual fan if he didn't want to stick around too much. But apparently he wouldn't. Maybe it's a matter of principles, or something like that.

He did state he's not coming back for Gen VI though, and the fact that it seems close enforced his decision.
It's been a while. Over a month to go and we will finally know more about Virgil and his Eevee. Anyway, I just want to hear something from you.

It's interesting that Generation V is currently the only generation in which all of its games are part of the canon; although it has really wide version-exclusive attributes. So, I just want to know if, in your opinion, what games are the most suitable on the canon: B and B2, W and W2, or all of them?
As surprising as it may sound, this is the genuine reason of his leaving and he's indeed been planning this for months. What surprises me though is that he doesn't seem bitter at all in his leaving note. He has had some issues with Bulbathings over the years, so, it's unexpected that he doesn't seem to hold bad feelings. :p

I haven't seen him online (on MSN) for quite some days. We didn't have a proper farewell either, since I was probably absent when he was leaving. I wonder if he'll ever show up anywhere sometime... :p

Incidentally, do you use MSN or some other instant messenger?
I guess, though it's still hard to predict what exactly they'll do in the "filler saga"... I wonder if we'll see Misty and others watching Ash during the League this time - in DP, for some strange reason, they didn't bother to do anything like that...
    LOL XDDD
I do wonder now if we might see Misty again in the near future... it seems totally random to bring up Misty now and have her say something like that if it wouldn't mean anything
I agree that they aren't perfect, but at least you can see how there could be some interesting concepts even in unlikely typings (like Bug and Dragon). Eeveelutions are indeed characterized by their elegance, and in that they also adapt types in a... special way. For example, Vaporeon doesn't looks exactly like something that came out of the sea, and Leafeon doesn't have to necessarily live in the woods. They take a characteristic of each element and adapt it in an elegant way. Which is why, for example, a Bug-type Eevee wouldn't have to be an insect and (obviously) a Flying-type one wouldn't have to be a bird. Actually, I like that thing with the clouds. The Flying-type one is probably the closest to a real Eeveelution as far as I'm concerned.

Yeah, the situation with Dark and Ghost Pokémon is pretty similar to the Light and Psychic thing. Like I have said before, it's been a while since I realized that conceptually, there isn't a solid way to categorize types. However, I like this categorization system you seem to suggest. Material-based types, Classical elements-based types, Behavior-based types... I suppose that in the Pokémon world, each type is a "special power" that isn't necessarily tied to a real-world concept; the names are more of a good approach in characterizing each "power's" features.

Dark is indeed the only behavioral type -- Psychic and Fighting would probably stand in the same category on the other hand. But isn't Poison also the only of its kind, more or less?
Oh, I didn't know about the Masuda thing...

As for June, I don't think it's too likely -- just a possibility. But even so, I believe you're overestimating the importance of movies in the promotion of the games. At this point, I doubt it affects sales by nearly enough. The movies mostly come out because people go to watch them in the theaters (and later buy the grossly overpriced Blu-rays). If anything, it's the promotion of the movies that helps generate hype, rather than the movies themselves -- be it a release in June or September, the two products will too this time be promoted alongside.

Espeon doesn't sound like much of a sympathetic Pokémon -- I was simply referring to the antithesis between it and Umbreon; day and night. I always found that (along with Light Screen) relatively interesting arguments regarding Psychic-type's status in comparison a possible Light-type. A "Light-type" Eeveelution would inevitably be compared to Espeon because of that.

Thankfully I found the thread that has a lot of Eevee fanart. Most of them aren't that good, but some are brilliant. The Poison, Fighting and Flying-type in this one are particularly nice. The Dragon-type one is also very good. I'm not saying all are perfect, but if only to pass the point that anything can be done with proper effort. I do agree that some types are more troublesome than others though.
I don't think any type would be unfit for Eevee. If only for the fan-concepts I've seen, I'd say that I'd like Eeveelutions to keep appearing every once in a while -- but in small numbers, like two at a time. Now, you probably say this to reflect the possibility of an Eeveelution based on a new type. That would be a very good idea, as it would promote the new types quite nicely. If we have two new, I think one should be of a new type, and another of an already existing (and preferably unlikely, like Bug or Dragon) one.

I wonder how a Light/Empathy-type Eeveelution would be received. Espeon is one of the most valid arguments regarding Psychic-type representing "Light". Then again, that wouldn't really be a problem if it's to be called the Empathy-type (or be put as such). After all, even when it comes to "Darkness", there aren't just the Dark/Evil-type Pokémon, but also the Ghost-type ones.
Regarding Jump Festa, I pretty much agree that whether or not it will be the Generation VI announcement, that will still be relatively close.

Considering last year's announcement was relatively "shocking", I do have some expectations for at least something worthwhile. Considering Masuda will appear in Smash before Jump Festa, it's possible that by that time, Generation VI pre-promotion may have already started. If that's so, I'm going to bet on a Wii U game featuring at least some Generation VI Pokémon. If we examine the possibility of Gen VI releasing at June (and the games themselves being unveiled before 2013) it might as well be a battle game (PBR was announced on a similar fashion); most likely though, it will be a spin-off planned for before the 3DS [sic] generation.

Now, if Masuda's announcement in Smash isn't Generation VI, that might as well mean Jump Festa would be a good opportunity. With Black and White, Iwata announced the game very casually, if I remember correctly (to the point that we wondered if that meant a new generation/game or whatever), so, even if Jump Festa isn't the #1 destination for Pokémon fans, it would still give the announcement enough exposure.

So, what if the Generation VI announcement is after Smash and Jump Festa? Who knows then... Probably just a casual spin-off announcement; maybe something in Ranger's footsteps.

    ----------
Eurogamer: The names of the games are associated with colours. There have been so many games now. Will you run out of colours soon? What happens when you do?\

Junichi Masuda: This time, for Black and White, the main concept was extreme in the scenario. So, that's where the name Black and White comes from. It's extreme, different, opposite. This time was the first time we put the title based on the scenario and the world point of view. This title was based on the content of the videogame scenario.

Going forward, I predict we will continue putting titles based on the worldview, like we did for Black and White. But of course, it's really difficult!

Oh, then I guess it's either Windows 8 (or 64-bit) at fault. I think I may just settle with an XP VirtualBox if it doesn't work on my regular Windows setup.

I have no problem with the prevalent Generation naming system, but I take issue with calling names that aren't used. Frankly, I wouldn't mind 'Dual Generation' (for a very, very short time, I used that as well, before Diamond and Pearl were announced), but I think the most proper would be to have no titles for Generation IV and V.

Incidentally, Game Freak's so-called "themes" -- Masuda said that's how games will be named from now on. I'm very curious about what this could mean. Past and Future are obvious contestants when it comes to this. But names like 'Determinism'/'Free-Will' or 'Life'/'Death'? I doubt they'd settle with them. It's gonna be interesting to see what kind of names they choose to reflect the games' themes if those themes aren't time-travelling. Then again, Black and White were also supposed to reflect BW's themes, but they did that very roughly...
By the way, since you were talking about naming conventions with Piplup, what do you think about the "titles" of each generation? Recently, I've been thinking about that... 'Color' and 'Metal' Generations are really very iconic as names for those that have been following the series back in the days... I also remember that when Ruby and Sapphire were coming, the term 'Advance Generation' was very relevant. However, I can't but find the terms '3D' and 'Monochrome' incredibly forced and non-fit... Whoever came up with them? Especially '3D' is just too uninspired. I wrote about that on the Discussion page of Generation IV, but no one seems to care...
We're probably going to be seeing a whole lot more non-Pokémon games by Game Freak. That's exciting for me. :p

By the way, did you get Shadow of Memories to work on a post-XP version of Windows? I installed it on Windows 8 RP but it wasn't working at all (though, I didn't try all that much, since I wanted to get rid of that partition anyway). I'm not sure if I remember correctly, but had you played it on a PlayStation 2 emulator or had you found a way to make it work on a new Windows version?

Incidentally, looks like the B2W2 heroes are named Nate and Rosa. Very nice names. But not as good as Luke and Leia.
I would just think they would officially announce it on some sort of platform in which the entire world can see it too, such as a press conference or on the official website, rather than a booth at a festival where not a large percentage of people will see it live. But I guess it doesn't matter, since they can announce it at Jump Festa and post the news about it on the official site right as it happens. Or they could just have a conference right after it.

Interesting about Eevee. I was going to say that I would think they would reveal the new generaton before having the new Pokemon actually being featured in the anime (the new Eeveelution), so if the end of the Unova League airs that early - then it seems very possible that we could get an announcement at Jump Festa considering the time gap you mentioned.
I think Japanese fans also usually treat gens 1+2 as one series... I know the official site kind of retconned that, but it still doesn't change the fact it aired as one long series until AG came, and continues to air under the same title in reruns (I'm pretty sure, at least) so the Orange or GS titles are exclusive to the site...
Johto also really did try the least to make it seem like a "new series"... no new cast members, no new outfits for the old characters, etc... so I think I'm ok with it being considered part of the "original series"
As you said, the official site didn't make much sense when they did that yet didn't separate BF from Hoenn... I guess when discussing things it's best to just say you're talking about the Kanto / Orange / Johto / Hoenn / BF saga... with DP (and so far BW too, "season 2" was nothing new at all so far and just continued the Unova journey) there's no confusion since it is one saga all way through
As for the official site's description of "season 2" - LOL... it is really wrong XD
Hm, I can't see them revealing something like Gen VI at Jump Festa. I could see them just waiting until the new year rather than revealing it near the end of December. Although, who knows. When & where exactly were Gen 4 and Gen 5 revealed?

They could be at Jump Festa to reveal another spin-off game. They must be there to reveal something, though. Do you happen to know when are the episodes in the anime going to air which feature the guy with the many Eeveelution's? It's very interesting that it may evolve into a brand new Eeveelution. I wonder where they will go after the Unova League is over.. they are going to have to kill time somehow.
The official site updated with information about the October 7th episode of Smash, and Masuda will be featured on it but it seems to be B2W2 related, and not any sort of announcement for future games.
Yeah, they deserve a better sendoff, but at this point and after how they were completely destroyed (to me, at least) I don't really care... and I wouldn't be surprised if whatever conclusion they get will be rushed anyway...
I still find it very hard to try predicting what they'll do after the League, hopefully whatever it'll end up being will be good, but I'm not expecting too much from this series...
