  • If Pokémon Time is supposed to be a retrospective look at older generations, featuring Gen IV would make me feel nothing special. It still feels fresh and new to me, and will probably feel so for years to come -- only recently did I gain an appreciation to Gen III's time. I guess that's to be expected from older fans, since we don't pay as much attention as we did back in the day, but I feel that this Pokémon Time thing is probably headed more to fans that appreciate the old times.

Either way, if anything, the Kanto games are the oldest ones currently, since Emerald released after FRLG. A bit older is Colosseum, although XD (which is to Col pretty much what B2W2 is to BW) is more recent. I'm still absolutely for the eShop port suggestion for the RSE anniversary, although I don't know how much viable it is... I mean, even a port would get a lot of exposure, and it's unlikely that 2013 won't bring a completely new game. Will fans accept B2W2, an RSE port in 2012 and a new game in 2013? Knowing the fandom, I won't say this is impossible, but I wouldn't be too sure. Maybe the port is more likely after Gen VI debuts.
They're alternate timelines in that episodes like Hideyoshi's, Nobunaga's, and Yoshihiro's looks at what it would be like if the player character didn't exist (hence Oichi being Aurora's warlord), but they aren't really followed up on future episodes. They're only really good for giving us perspective in their motivation to unite Ransei. Then there's stuff like Motochika and Mitsuhide's stories which has Nobunaga taking over Ransei, the player character again doesn't exist, and Motochika and Mitsuhide rebel. What's interesting though is in both those episodes, Nixtrom isn't in Nobunaga's control, suggesting that they both take place under one larger "umbrella" universe, with the timeline splitting based on who succeeds in defeating Nobunaga.

Ujiyasu's episode also seems to have successfully halted Shingen and Kenshin's attempts to unify Ransei (in contradiction to Shingen and Kenshin's episode), which falls in line with Ujiyasu historically making peace with both Shingen and Kenshin. It doesn't really try to weave history in one big overarching plot, but seems to throw tidbits of history in the relevant chapters.
It's been a while... I kind of hit my writing career full-on and dropped all my internet stuff for a few months, so I'm way out of the loop. Anything new or interesting on the beta or future fronts?
Each one doesn't have a better narrative, but multiple episodes together weave a pretty good story. Taking how little plot elements there are in the main series, Conquest may actually overtake it in that regard thanks to continuing the same story from multiple perspectives.

I'm currently compiling a timeline for the main story (as there seem to be multiple alternate timeline on who takes over Ransei). Basically, after reuniting Ransei, the four 100-Pokemon capture stories seem to go over the aftermath with Hideyoshi, Nobunaga, and Kotaro disappearing, and who replaces them. The 40 warlord story seems to take place after that, regarding Shingen and Kenshin trying to take over Ransei, culminating in Shingen and Kenshin's story (which starts by saying they've been fighting for a long time) in which Ransei is split between the two. The Junior Warrior competition seems to take place in this timeline as well, but I don't know where it happens. When the PC isn't there, Oichi serves as Aurora's warlord, while she serves as Dragnor's warlord when Nobunaga is gone. However, she takes part in this competition along with Ranmaru, so I think she's the PC's Junior Warrior.

I still don't know where the Two Heroes of Ransei fit into this since I haven't unlocked it yet, but I think it would be from the main timeline, but splits off from the Kenshin and Shingen conflict.
Pokemon Conquest actually does have a much better narrative when playing post-game episodes. Some of them are simply "What ifs..." like the Hideyoshi one (evident with young Nobunaga) but some episodes actually follow up on the main plot, though a few of them are just from other people's perspectives.
Not like that's going to ever kill the speculation.

I'd much rather have a Wii game that focused on Gen III Pokemon to commemorate it, but I doubt that's happening.
Maybe they hadn't gotten around to designing new looks for them? Or maybe there's some concept art of their new looks that will never see the light of day. Even in the third versions, they could've gotten slightly different outfits, like Lucas and Dawn did for Platinum. Oh well, it doesn't matter now. :\
I can think of a couple examples in other series. Final Fantasy XI (ironically, considering the series is most well known about its characters) didn't heavily feature any default character in promotions, ads or the main story -- as a result, it's the single Final Fantasy to not have any rememberable protagonists, and they seem to struggle when it comes to including properties of the entry in crossovers and the like (XIV didn't repeat the mistake on the same scale). Dragon Quest X on the other hand does have one fellow who is heavily featured across media. The latter is somewhat more comparable to Pokémon when it comes to characters, so, I hope main characters from games that have customizing options will be treated in a similar way.

That said, it's still inquiring whether they would use the same default character (both appearance and setting-wise) in two games, would there be such options.
Wow, this concept art is amazing. Looking at one of the thumbnails, I thought for a moment that I was looking at Red (since N wears a red cup instead of a black one). Shame they've not made a new Red art -- very unreasonable that he didn't have one in HGSS... N has a dozen of artworks even if he didn't change his attire either.

Also, what the heck? Couldn't they at least have changed Hilbert and Hilda's clothes in this third-version-planning stage? :p

And indeed, I'd also still rather play with Hilbert and Hilda again. Exploring the world with the same character might have been a more unique experience. In the end they didn't even appear... I wonder if we'll ever have that chance if customizable characters make appearance. Granted, I want to believe there will be "default" characters representing the story's hero, and if those animation shorts become a trend, we will have many media heavily using them, so, not much will change (besides the fact that we'll also have customization options). But if they instead try to cancel out or degrade the concept of the "main hero", it will be kinda sad...
A lot of the memory links seem stupid...especially with the misuse of Emotion for some of them. Honestly, there has to be some sort of connection for the Shadow Triad to appear there and troll them.
Note sure if you've seen this yet, not quite sure what they say in the interview, but there's a gallery full of concept art that we'll likely never get a chance to properly see.

It seems that they were originally going to have the Shadow Triad have a unique design for each member...I wonder why they dropped that idea. Part of me thinks they actually did decide to make them the Striaton triplets, then went against the idea...

We also get more sage art, and an image of Anthea and Concordia in their Goddess clothes.
Maybe the anime will be dropped/paused and a game-canon series will start on its place.

If there's not anything worthwhile they can do with the World Tournament, I'd like an Orange Islands - like saga. At least Orange Islands were interesting because they were introducing new Gym Leaders and concepts to the series at the time when the canons weren't exactly well set. I had played the game before I saw all of the Gyms in the anime, but OI was all-new to me. I think a new region at this time could even been made with some say from Game Freak, so, they could even imply it to be a region that exists but game players aren't able to visit yet (something they didn't directly do with Orange Islands, introducing Sevii instead).

I don't care much about the anime either, of course. On top of the story getting more and more cliché, the animation is also worse than the hand-drawn original series. I don't know if this is nostalgia talking, but the series was much better back in the day. Ash's development, character relationships, rivalry, pacing. Even some CotDs from back then are more rememberable as characters than the bazilion of rivals in the new series and I liked what Yellow did with them and characters like Jessie and James.

Anyway... I guess this is a breaking point, so, at least we have the curiosity on where they will go.
I haven't played B2W2, so, I can't say much on how optimistic we should be on a one-generation-two-regions scheme, but since I wasn't as optimistic as you were in first place (as far as new content is concerned), I wouldn't say I'm very surprised on the situation. For the moment I'm just happy that from now on we'll most likely be able to play a relatively new game more often, even if most of the content we are already familiar with. This can be anywhere from a more or less euphemism for a third version, to a full-fletched sequel. But there's no denying the the lowest point is still a step up from before. The only thing I'm a bit worried about is that they might deliberately leave cliffhangers to only continue in a sequel too often... They can do that sometimes, but I hope it doesn't become a pattern.

In any case, I guess this other region(s) adds to the "things Game Freak teases us with for some reason" list. :p
I haven't gotten there, but it seems as if its an upgraded version of the campaign mode, with the two heroes referring to Nobunaga and the PC. Every Warlord leader is apparently Rank II with fully evolved forms, but I'm not sure about the details.
The main reason why I don't have the problem with the DP to PT drought is because I wasn't in the fandom then, I sort of go off Pokemon for a bit then come back to it. I got Diamond literally a few months before Platinum came out ( I didn't know at the time Platinum was so close as I wasn't in the fandom during that time.)

You're right RSDS remakes do not excite me, for me personally, one visit to Hoenn was enough. But I do want a bit more than just the 2 releases for Gen 5. And yes I think it would be better to have a game drought inbetween generations rather than during a generation. Something like Colloseum or XD Gale Of Darkness would have been perfect to plug the gap.

As for 3DS, do you really think that if they waited until September 2011 to release BW, and put it on 3DS they wouldn't be that good? IIRC my friends were playing Diamond and Pearl pretty soon after the DS came out, and they were fine on the DS weren't they?
Thought it would be better to respond on here.

IIRC they have done 3 games in a row before. They've done Platinum, HGSS, and BW all 1 year after the other. So it is possible for them to do 3 games in 3 years.
What I feel Game Freak should have done was maybe have taken a bit more time off after HGSS, released BW on 3DS, (3DS was big in 2011 right?) Then done BW, BW2, RSDS year after year to complete the generation. Then if they really need a break like you say they do, take the break in between generations, not during the middle of one.

To me it seems like they rushed Gen 5 and in the process made it smaller in terms of content rather than length.
I've heard something about the Village of Dragons. It's nice that something from the anime made it to the game a bit later. That goes to say that the anime can offer some meaningful universal information for the world. Names for some characters was the only thing we had at most before... I'd actually like to know if there's anything else said about that. Can we guess if it's in Unova's country or some other continent?

As for the Nature Sanctuary, I can only assume that this is the location that is unlocked when you complete the Pokédex. I'm going to jump the gun and guess it's where N was between BW and BW2. Don't spoil too much, but I'm curious about the same thing as before: how far from Unova can we guess it is?
Yeah. The main campaign doesn't live up to the 20 hours they were saying (I didn't get that far and I was stalling), though most games tend to be finished faster than what the developers advertise.

My current playthrough of the Hideoshi episode has my playtime at 35 hours (in total) so it went over 20, but even then I was stalling to evolve all my warlords...which will undoubtedly make other playthroughs incredibly easy and thus go by faster.
