It's good that you're trying different pokemon and enjoying it. Variety is part of what makes the series so great to begin with. There are pokemon with better stats, yes, but lots of different pokemon can be winners under the right circumstances.
I'm mostly a collector, but also a battler. Collecting was easy back when there were only 150 of them. With nearly 500, I can definately say that I'm getting my money's worth in entertainment value.
My opinion of the 3rd generation is mixed. As the author of this thread mentioned, pokemon abilities and contests were positive additions to the series. It introduced some pokemon that I like (especially torkoal) and I personally like its starters better than those of generation 4.

For pokemon of a gender-neutral appearence, I generally choose males. When a species of pokemon looks feminine (like gardevoir), I prefer to have a female.
