Word of the Week

isochronous (adj.): 1. happening at regular intervals; isochronal
2. happening at the same time; simultaneous [Wiktionary]

Once his sleep was an isochronous event; these days it was apparently random.
The isochronous complaining of the customers was too much to bear.

Another one of our Greek friends, and something of a mouthful to boot, isochronous is a combination of, ísos (ἴσος), ‘equal’, and khrónos (χρόνος), ‘time’. Also potentially something of a false friend, having two senses with similar but crucially different meanings, this is one word which thrives on context.

Word of the Week

pique (n.): a feeling of irritation or resentment resulting from a slight, especially to one’s pride.

(v.): 1. arouse (interest or curiosity)
2. (be piqued) feel irritated or resentful.
3. (pique oneself) pride oneself. [Oxford English Dictionary]

Pique, sometimes mistakenly spelt ‘peek’, from the Old French pic (‘a sharp point), has radiated into quite the plethora of senses. Pic is where we also get pike (in the sense of ‘a long spear’). Interest may be piqued; one can suffer a fit of pique; one can pique oneself.

Word of the Week

piquant (adj.): 1. having a pleasantly sharp taste or appetising flavour.
2. pleasantly stimulating or exciting to the mind. [Oxford English Dictionary]
3. Causing hurt feelings; scathing, severe. [Wiktionary]

From the Old French pic (‘a sharp point’), piquant adds to the radiation of meanings along with pique and pike. Piquant is perhaps most commonly thought of as a flavour adjective, though its sense of engaging, charming, stimulating, etc, appears in Mary Wollstonecraft’s A Vindication of the Rights of Women. The archaic sense 3 recalls “a fit of pique”, or “to be piqued”.

Word of the Week

dolorifuge (n.): that which mitigates or removes grief. [Wiktionary]

Time and compassion are an ancient dolorifuge.

Also defined by The Guardian as something or someone which alleviates feelings of pain or sadness – dolorifuge is a Victorian coinage, composed of the Latin dolor (‘Pain’ or ‘grief’, from which we get ‘dolorous’), and fugo (‘to chase away’, ‘to exile’, ‘to dismiss’).

Word of the Week

supernaculum (n.): excellent wine one would wish to drink to the last drop.
(adv): to the last drop, to the bottom. [Wiktionary]

This vintage is both a guilty pleasure and a personal supernaculum.

Nay, it shall be an overflowing bumper, an you will; and I will drink it super naculum.”
- Walter Scott, Peveril of the Peak

An inelegant coinage from Latin, supernaculum seems to take its origin from the rules of a drinking game. The word’s connotations with excellence, or at least tastiness, allow us to use it in a figurative sense to refer to any desirable drink.

Word of the Week

gobbledegook (n.): language that is meaningless or made unintelligible by excessive use of technical terms. [Oxford English Dictionary]

Darling, make a note of the word ‘gobbledegook’; I like it, and I want to use it more often in conversation.

Also gobbledeygook, first attested to US Representative Maury Maverick in March 1944, now widely used as a synonym for nonsense and assorted blatherskite. Probably in reference to a turkey’s gobble, although I have never heard of a turkey able to use much in the way of technical language.

Word of the Week

xenodochy (n.): reception of strangers; hospitality. [Wiktionary]

Xenodochy is a virtue much debated in these troubled times.

The Greek xenos (ξένος), ‘foreign’, or ‘alien’, is probably most associated with xenophobia (1: A fear of strangers or foreigners; 2: A strong antipathy or aversion to strangers or foreigners). Xenodochy, perhaps, is the antidote to xenophobia if it is not the antonym – because xenodochy is not just hospitality, but hospitality offered to people you don’t know.

Word of the Week

animadversion (n.): 1. criticism or censure.
2. a comment or remark, especially a critical one. [Oxford English Dictionary]

The general knew he would face fierce animadversion for his defeat.

A curious concoction of a word, from the Latin animus, ‘mind’, and adverto, ‘to turn to’ or ‘to give attention to’, animadversion does not at first glance look like it ought to mean what it does. Indeed, the connotations of ‘anima’ are especially complex. From ‘anima’ we get ‘animal’; ‘anima’ is cognate with the Greek ánemos (ἄνεμος), sometimes translated as ‘breath of life’.

Word of the Week

pollard (v.): cut off the top and branches of a tree to encourage new growth at the top.

(n.) 1. a tree whose top and branches have been pollarded.
2. an animal that has lost its horns or cast its antlers. [Oxford English Dictionary]

Pollarding is an ancient forestry practice – the term derives from the Middle English poll, ‘pate’ or ‘scalp’, which explains why a pollard can also be a hornless animal. Pollarding has traditionally been done to manage natural resources by taking advantage of the regenerative abilities of trees.

coppice (n.): an area of woodland in which the trees are periodically cut back to ground level to stimulate growth.
(v.): cut back (a tree or shrub) to ground level to stimulate growth. [Oxford English Dictionary]

The coppice, from the Old French copiez, is the sister practice to pollarding, working under the same principles. Coppiced trees are cut back to or near to ground level, causing the tree to grow a mass of new branches from the stump. A coppiced wood is called a copse, the word having passed into generic use for a small wood or thicket.

I’d as lief write my own examples.

The archaic lief, from the Old English lēof, remains the last of a family of derived words now sadly out of use in modern English. To be agreeable was to be liefsome; lēofspell was good news; lēofwende was kind and loving; to be liefest was the superlative.

Word of the Week

female (adj.): of or denoting the sex that can bear offspring or produce eggs, distinguished biologically by the production of gametes (ova) which can be fertilised by male gametes.
(n.): a female person, animal, or plant. [Oxford English Dictionary]

Female is an example of an eggcorn – an erroneous word or phrase that enters common usage and may become accepted usage. From the Old French femelle, ultimately the Latin femina, femelle became female due to an assumed etymological connexion to ‘male’ - in fact from the Latin masculus.

The etymology of glib seems to be uncertain, but whether it derives from the English ‘glibbery’, or the Low German ‘glibberich’, it’s solidly Germanic. Glibbery (‘slippery’) gives a clue as to the nuances of ‘glib’ - it is language that may be clever, artful, even persuasive, but at it’s heart is insincere, superficial, even deceitful

2. (of speech or writing) using or involving ellipsis, especially so as to be difficult to understand. [Oxford English Dictionary]

Ellipses – three dots, not two, neither four. Five is right out. And also oval-shaped. Ellipses are one of those types of punctuation that are easily overused and abused, especially when used as a result for a full stop. Elliptic, or elliptical writing deliberately plays off the ellipsis as an excuse not to finish a full sentence, resulting in writing that is less stylish than it is annoying.

Word of the Week

ulotrichous (adj.): having woolly hair. [Wiktionary]

Wooloo and Mareep are both obviously ulotrichous pokémon.

A strangely recent word, first recorded in 1855, ulotrichous comes from the Greek oulótrichos, oûlos being ‘thick’ or ‘fleecy’.

Word of the Week

ya’aburnee (n.): lit. ‘you bury me’, expressing the feeling of not wishing to live without the addressed.

Well-attested online, yet strangely resistant to precise definition, ya’aburnee (يقبرني) is an Arabic term of endearment, expressing the hope that you would die before whomever you’re speaking to, as you could not bear to live without them.

Word of the Week

bedog (v.): 1. to refer to or treat like a dog; to follow like a dog, harass, torment; bully.
2. to become or behave as a dog. [Wiktionary]

Sometimes it’s nice to come across an unusual word with bonafide English origins. Bedog is all Old English, or at least mostly – the prefix ‘be-’ goes all the way back to Proto-Indo-European. And, pleasingly, it means pretty much what you’d expect it to mean. Perhaps we could update it as ‘bedoggo’ for the modern slang.

Word of the Week

gourmand (n.): 1. a person who enjoys eating and often eats too much. [Oxford English Dictionary]
2. like a gourmet, only fatter. [Homer Simpson]

Of surprisingly uncertain origin, but unsurprisingly borrowed from the Middle French gourmant, gourmand, connoting gourmet, suggests a somewhat more refined form of gluttony – or perhaps not, because gourmand so easily comes sardonic.
