I find it very sad that a 16-year-old would just accept it and not even think about it. I mean, come on, everyone believed Franklin Roosevelt's propaganda about Stalin being "a peace-loving democratic socialist," and then we found out he was the biggest mass-murderer in the history of the world.
Y'know, that's very wise for a 10-year-old. But yeah, that is exactly why I find it amazing that the Jamestown settlement survived after the commonstore system. Thank goodness for John White. And there were several other American towns/settlements founded on socialism. I can't recall their names, but I remember they were total failures.
I saw that conversation with Mizjelffan. You're right, socialism is basically less severe communism in practice. After all, that's what the USSR was at first, and then gradually shifted to communism. Feel free to use that in your argument.
