I was reading back over Moonlight Silver just because, and when I got to the start of the Ecruteak arc, I realized I had basically written out the iconic Spearow chase and Ho'oh encounter from episode 1 of the real show--which is brought up again in that arc.
Since I'm at "The School of Hard Knocks" I'm thinking about putting Brock in that scene, and moving the Ho'oh encounter there--and that's what spurs Ash and Misty's argument at the start of the episode--Ash believes it is Ho'oh, and Misty believes it is a shiny Fearow.

That seems like it could work. Maybe have Ash save some kids from a flock of Spearow, and then he (and only he) sees Ho-Oh? Only throwing out ideas since you are at an episode that involves a school.
