I think it’s partially for casual audiences. Many of Ash’s pokemon that don’t move the plot end up in the background when they show up, so sprinkling some random ones in there might confuse people that aren’t caught up.
I mean, this battle has literally been in the opening lines this whole saga, no writer/producer with half a brain cell would pull out something like this… hopefully.
Ludicolo did get used, actually. It battled Sawyer’d Aegislash.
There’s also the fact that only a handful of them could realistically keep up in this stage of the tournament. I mean, do we really want to see Totodile or Snivy going up against champions?
I know the company is stingy with full battles, but they oughta throw us a bone for what’s essentially the climax of the whole anime.
… phrasing it like that makes it sound so much more exciting than it is.
Thoughts of Ash battling Lance made me realise… goddamn, Pikachu gets a kick out of slaying Gyarados, doesn’t he? I can think of five just from a ten second brainstorm.
With the way the Greninja backlash still goes on, you could swear it lost to a Charmander. Come on, saying the frog had it worse than Noivern or Torkoal is just grossly hyperbolic and reductive.
Well yes, I suppose it’s not the healthiest way to teach kids how to deal with pent up frustration, but we’ll see. Perharps a more “achievable” battle with Ash can remind him that he isn’t a pushover, he’s just aiming higher than most.
If anything I’m concerned about his knuckles, holy fuck...
I find the people that say Ash “doesn’t evolve his pokemon” so hilarious, because like… do they expect Ash to completely ignore Pikachu’s desires and chuck a Thunder Stone on his face? Do these people really think this doesn’t have any horrifying implications you wouldn’t want your kids to learn?
You could make a stretch that this comes from the Kanga mom keeping him stuffed in her pouch, but then that would probably just make him claustrophobic altogether.
