It might even be the most useless Pokemon in the anime ever. And here I thought Togepi was useless back in the day. At least Togepi did stuff sometimes. Hell, Grookey might even be more useless than Lana's Eevee Sandy. That's.......yikes.
Hey, I like Rowlet as much as the next guy, in fact it's one of my favorite Pokemon, (I happen to love birds, owls in particular,) and my second-favorite Grass type Starter after Treecko. It's just.....Ash's Rowlet was.......not great. The sleeping gag was done to death, and the Everstone thing...
As I've said in another post, I'm gonna hold out hope for this series 'till the end, they may just surprise me yet. But, I think the sooner Goh and all of his annoyances (including Grookey) are gone, the better.
No, Goh is still veeery much a rookie, greenhorn trainer who has gotten ridiculously lucky. And between him and Ash back in the day, they've given him more. Did Ash catch two freakin' Legendary Pokemon back in the day? Did he have two fully evolved starters, a Flygon, Scizor and god knows what...
The answer is: it shouldn't have been able to. At all. A good example of Goh being a Mary Sue. Or deus ex machina. Take your pick. And he's trained Grookey about as well, which is to say, not at all.
