I haven't watched the DP Gym battles in years, probably a decade. I really have to rewatch them at some point because I've forgotten a lot of them besides some key moments. I guess this is a problem when the show now has 1200 episodes and goes on for 25 years, all the episodes tend to blur...
Admittedly I don't remember DP Volkner's Gym too much but I remember liking it for the most part. Candice being a 4 vs 4 battle probably resulted in a lot of it being a bit rushed.
It's always weird to go back to early DP and remembering how good Turtwig was in battle before it evolved. It really is the only case in the entire anime where one of Ash's starters actually does progressively worse as it goes through its evolutions.
I have no problem with the battle myself, but I get the feeling if say this battle happened nowadays, people would post a whole bunch of rants that a tiny Turtwig shouldn't be able to throw a much heavier dinosaur pokemon by its mouth like that, or even be powerful enough to take it out when it...
Just curious if this happened today:
Turtwig beating Roark's Rampardos who just evolved by throwing it by its tail into a wall, would people complain about it like some battles in JN? Keep in mind this Gym battle was only 16 episodes into DP, so Ash's Turtwig hadn't even been around that long...
Not sure if this is controversial, but most of Journey's battles are better than every previous series besides DP and XY (the very best ones from those).
Many battles from OS-AG haven't aged too well besides the best ones, BW's were always a mixed bag, and SM doesn't have too many major battles...
If you watch episode 100, Leon's development seems to be he needs to learn to lose again. Even losing to Eternatus which was a flashback in that ep didn't give him that feeling. So Leon just winning and winning and beating everyone leads nowhere.
This is probably the only reason I think Ash...
At the very least, Ash isn't struggling to battle rookies in the same region anymore:
1. Barry was a beginning trainer in DP, he was shown to fight mostly on Ash's level
2. Trip, Bianca, Cameron and maybe Stephen were all beginning trainers in BW, somehow they were all treated similar to Ash...
Depending how this series ends, I'm not sure what plot thread it would leave hanging. Go will continue to do missions when he leaves, Koharu will go on her own journey, and even if Ash loses to Leon it's not like they hadn't done that before with Alan in XY or so forth.
Anything that didn't get...
I think the multiple series in a row with eevee was the problem. For example when Serena got an Eevee, it was a good 8 years after May had an Eevee in AG. As well as 3 series later, so it didn't feel redundant even before the Eevee's evolved. Nobody complained Serena got an Eevee even before we...
Lance and Steven were handled so poorly in OS and AG that it feels like the Champions were never depicted properly in the anime till Cynthia.
Lance was literally an afterthought in two villain arcs the second of which he took Steven's role from the games and screwed him over too. Journey's is...
Cynthia only appears in the post-game of SM in the Battle Tree, and the anime usually ignores most post-game battle areas like that. I doubt Cynthia was ever going to appear in SM either way.
JN Ash literally just looks like a slightly younger version of XY Ash. I watched the Steven battle recently and Ash looks fine. Only in some of the earlier JN eps when they were getting used to the new design did he look somewhat similar to his SM self or his pupils were drawn a little too...
Since Journey's will barely have any eps left after the tournament and Go's project Mew it seems safe to say outside of silent cameos watching the Leon match most of the rest of the companions probably aren't getting eps at this point.
What I'm most surprised about is Misty not appearing in...
Watching today's Japanese episode I'm reminded how little focus Misty's Poliwag/Poliwhirl got. She catches it in the last 4 eps of Orange Islands and it gets very little focus till it evolves. As a Poliwhirl it had about 2-3 good episodes, then it becomes Politoed and doesn't do much since Johto...
Johto just went on too long, and Ash's Johto pokemon should have been handled better. Cyndaquil should of evolved during Jasmine's Gym battle, would have been the perfect time. Phanpy and Heracross also needed to stay on the team or get caught/hatched a lot earlier.
I think the other problem is...
As someone who grew up with them, the problem with all the older seasons is they all rely on the TR formula for fillers between each Gym battle. Ash and co. would meet a trainer, resolve a quick problem, and TR would come in and steal the pokemon of the day and Pikachu till they get blasted off...
Also the initial hype was Gible was Ash's very first dragon pokemon and in a season Cynthia had Garchomp. For the writers to give Ash a pokemon with a popular final evolution and then just never do anything with it was a misfire. Hell when people think about Ash's Sinnoh team most people forget...
