I can personally see what other people see in her (what with her being an archeologist and actually getting involved in her native game's story), but she's still not amongst my favorite Champions.
This episode is animated by Yūji Asada and Masaaki Iwane, who have provided us with some excellent animation multiple times in the past, so I have perfect faith in them making this episode look dynamic and epic too.
He was introduced during the Johto League arc, during which he was a Champion in the games. However, all of his later appearance have happened during time periods when his latest game appearance was as an Elite Four member.
To me, his anime self is always going to be a Champion, but that's not...
The strange thing just is that he was explicitly referred to as a Champion in the Johto anime, but then the Gen III anime called him an Elite Four member.
Actually, he was only referred to as a Champion in the Red Gyarados episodes and The Legend of Thunder!. In the Groudon & Kyogre episodes, he was referred to as a member of the Elite Four, probably due to the then-topicality of FireRed and LeafGreen. And now it's probably because his latest...
I personally am satisfied with this level of continuity already. It'll just be all the more satisfying if more (like Ash recognizing Lance or even him recalling his earlier experiences with him) is mentioned.
