I'm not sure where I heard it, so I'm not 100% sure if it's true, but I recall hearing that SM was not based on that anime. Only their comedic tones are similar.

May's starter was far from a plushie in its evolved forms, I'd say (they purposefully designed Blaziken to be unpopular compared to Torchic, actually, but things didn't quite go that way). Though I admit, that was a long while ago.
The DP finale was adapted pretty accurately, the Team Flare finale was ever more grandiose than it was in the games, and I dare say that even the Sword and Shield plot was adapted well without sacrificing the drama.
