^That looks like one of those "Ooh the camera angle changes to face the water and JUST LOOK AT THAT GORGEOUS VIEW!" things. It would be exciting if we could go underwater there though.
If we indeed only have access to the four main islands in the artwork and that little one in the southwest, this underwater city would solve our lack of postgame. I'm all for it either way.
I remember reading something about a "leeward" side of a Hawaiian volcano. Leeward sides of mountains are often associated with drier air than the surrounding area, so maybe we'll get another random desert? I personally hope so.
I would guess that Masuda probably intended to make it Spain, but when they decided to go all-out with anniversary stuff, he (or someone else) picked Hawaii to create/add to the vacation motif. Thus the seahorse references.
