In SM, absolutely, but in previous series, they were more plot devices than characters, and from a writing perspective, that's bad (which, for Pokémon, really isn't saying much)

The only thing I'm disappointed in is that the TRio isn't using their downtime to catch Alolan pokemon to send back to base, because as long as they stay away from Ash, they're...
It just makes their appearances that much more memorable and impactful.
I like that they're not constantly showing up and causing The Problem Of The Week, since why they pop up, they're much more threatening.
They BEAT Ash early on, and Mimikyu had Pikachu thrashed before it accidentally helped...
