What? Main point of criticism about Gou's captures was how he doesn't friended them and didn't care about pokémon's feelings. No one said anything about that. Maybe Gou's pokémon care more about his ball throwing skills.

It's implied that Houou inspired Satoshi to travel other regions and meet other pokémon he never seen before, but there is nothing suggests that it also inspired him to be the strongest trainer. It was always his goal, even before meeting Pikachu.
