Welcome to Volume III of Guess the Google Map, one of Bulbagarden's oldest games originally started by @Evil Figment, revived with his blessings.

How to Play:
A user will look up a map on Google (in satellite mode), find a location, screen cap it without labels and post it here for everyone to guess. Please spoiler any maps larger than 800px wide.

When taking a screen cap, please make sure the 45 degree mode is disabled (as shown in the spoiler) and to make sure all distinguishing labels are off.
45Degrees.png

Once posted, users will try and guess the landmark or location indicated by the current map. The current map poster is to provide the type of location they're looking for specifically be it a city, road, object, building, body of water or other geographic feature. They must also provide the specific continent the location is featured in.

When making a guess, please do either of the following so that your guess can be confirmed quickly.
1. Quote the post (that has the picture)
2. Mention the person that posted the picture (done by putting @ in front of the username)

Additionally, the current map poster may offer a simple hint to start with, but they don't have to. They may also offer a trivia type question related to the map itself earning users extra points. This is also not mandatory.

If there are no appropriate guesses after a week, the current map poster should provide a suitable hint.

The user who gets the location right earns the chance to post the next map and some points. They may offer to pass their turn off if they don't wish to post a map. You may not pass on a map more than twice (you must post a follow up map after your third guess or subsequent maps guessed don't contribute to your score).

Scoring:
Life is no fun without a little friendly competition. Traditionally these points represent the number of maps a person has found and serve no real meaning. They still won't but to allow newer players to catch up and not feel left behind, we'll have a new scoring method where we keep track of 'seasonal' winners: players who can earn the most points over the course of 3 months.

The next rotation period will occur on March 1rst, 2012.

Point System
4 Points [Guess a map within 24 hours of being posted]
2 Points [Guess a map within a week of being posted]
1 Point [Guess a map any later than a week after being posted]
2 Points [Bonus points for any trivia questions answered]
Two tallies will be kept, the traditional one for overall maps found and the seasonal score. The overall map score will remain cumulative for the life of this thread while the seasonal score will be reset every 3 months.

Here are the locations that have been the subjects of maps so far (A big thanks to Sourcandy for compiling this!)

Re: Guess the Google Map

Without further ado, let's begin, shall we :D

This one may not be so hard if you think about the topic this thread is dealing with.

What is the name of the compound featured here?

Continent: North America

Bonus Trivia: What are the tiny rectangles scattered throughout the roof of the buildings?

Re: Guess the Google Map

Is it the Google Headquarters (Googleplex)?

The one located at 1600 Amphitheatre Parkway, Mountain View, California, USA?

Re: Guess the Google Map

No idea, but the tiny rectangles are solar panels. I think.

Re: Guess the Google Map

Its the google headquarters, I'd guess, so I'd think minimag got it right. As for the rectangles, they are probably solar panels.

Re: Guess the Google Map

Minimag gets the location right and Neonsands gets the question. Way to go guys!

Posting the name is just fine. I don't expect anyone to post a full street address.

For the trivia, yup, they're solar panels alright. Google has an array of 9212 Solar Panels producing enough energy to power about 1000 homes daily but in actuality, only supplies about 30% of the total power Google needs at peek hours.

For all intents and purposes, you can answer the question right but the round won't move on until the map has been guessed. With this scenario, I'll have to make the absolute limit on answering the question "Up and to when the current map poster verifies that the map guess is correct. If the question hasn't been answered before that, then the question won't count and no bonus points will be awarded that round."

So now it's Minimag's turn to post a map.
@minimag;

Re: Guess the Google Map

Alright then.

Here we go!

googleu.png

What city is this in?

Hint-It's in the Southern Hemisphere...
In Oceania.

Bonus Trivia-What is the name of the circular, bronze coloured building in the middle?

Re: Guess the Google Map

The city is Wellington
The building is the Beehive

Re: Guess the Google Map

Your location helped a bit.... : P

Alright, here's the next map then...

google-map-plane_1835006i.jpg

What precisely is the building with the blueish roof at the bottom of the picture (name and city)
Continent: Europe
Hint: That's where you'll find a software that'll help you learn other languages.
Question: On what date (Day/Month/Year) was this building, under its current name and use, was open to visitors for the first time?

Re: Guess the Google Map

I'm going to guess University of Salamanca in Salaamanca (duh!). Uh I really don't know, I'm just guessing.

Re: Guess the Google Map

The British museum in London, where the rosetta stone is kept.

also the date is 15 January 1759

Re: Guess the Google Map

coolking503 is correct on both counts!

Re: Guess the Google Map

screenshfzf.png

continent: North America
Hint: You can see two different states in this image
trivia/quiz: What famous landmark is visable while seated in the stadium?

Re: Guess the Google Map

Yankee stadium? and Hudson River? lol I dunno :p

Re: Guess the Google Map

I'm gonna try the Busch Stadium in St-Louis Missouri, and the landmark woud therefore be the Gateway Arch?

Re: Guess the Google Map

That was a total guess XD I was first thinking of Yankee stadium, but it isn't near New Jersey, so the hint didn't work.

What's the name of this ship-shaped building, and in what city is it located?

Continent: Europe
Hint: Has counterparts in New York, Venice, Abu Dhabi and Berlin
Trivia: Whose puppy and tulips can you see in this building?

Re: Guess the Google Map

The Guggenheim in Bilbao, Spain?

Been to the ones in Venice and New York.

And you can see Jeff Koons' Puppy and Tulips ;P (Looked that one up)
