Citing guidelines set by the World Health Organization, Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, and other national health authorities, The Pokémon Company International (TPCi) have announced they will be pushing the 2020 Pokémon World Championships back to 2022. The event will still be hosted in London, UK as originally planned.

Invitations to the 2020 World Championships will still be honored for 2022 events, however all sanctioned Play! Pokémon events will continue to be suspended until further notice. TPCi will continue to support online competitive play through competitions such as the Pokémon Players Cup and the Play! Pokémon Team Challenge.

TPCi offered thanks to its players, organizers, and fans for their support & understanding, stating that "[t]he safety and well-being of our competitors, organizers, employees, local communities, and partners continues to be our top priority and is the primary consideration with every decision we make".
