Review XY134: Siege of Miare Gym! Citroid Forever!!

All I can say now is that this music was playing during Clembot and Clemont's last scene.

Oh, and if you thought Mega Charizard X was overpowered, meet Lysandre's Shiny Mega Gyarados. This beast can handle Mega Charizard X, Ash-Greninja, and wiped out most of Ash's team in a few blows all by itself.

Here's a complete recap of the episode. This was written after it had aired, so some details may have minor mistakes and some parts may be out of order.

- We begin by continuing the battle on Prism Tower. Satoshi tells Pikachu and Onvern to use Thunderbolt and Boomburst respectively against Mega Gyarados. They hit, but then Fluer-de-lis orders Dragon Tail. Pikachu is about to be hit... when suddenly Onvern gets in the way and takes the blow instead. Onvern is knocked out, and Luchabull is very concerned.
- Satoshi recalls Onvern and sends Luchabull against Mega Gyarados. Unfortunately, it doesn't last much longer and is grabbed by Mega Gyarados and slammed into the ground. Now Luchabull is out of the fight too. Mega Lizardon does manage to get in a hit too.
- Eureka is running towards Puni-chan. Bursyamo Mask tries to stop her, but when he sees he can't instead decides to escort her.
- Citron breaks into Miare Gym to find two Flare Grunts waiting there, which he easily dispatches by having Rentorar use Electric Terrain. Xerosicy then steps forward, and Citron challenges him to battle their reputation as scientists. Xerosicy sends out his two Pokemon, Crobat and... Calamanero! Citron begins battle, as the Citroid makes use of the distraction to sneak around and start hacking into the computer of the gun which is controlling both Zygarde.
- The helicopter carrying Serena, Maron, Team Rocket and Platene approaches Fleur-de-lis Labs only to find Momiji waiting. She has her Manyula attack the helicopter with Ice Share and Blizzard. Just when it seems like the helicopter may go down, Daigo approaches like a Big Damn Hero and fights them off. Musashi instantly falls in love with the champion (no mention is made of their encounter in Hoenn, I believe). The helicopter lands where Momiji, several grunts and their assorted Pokemon are waiting. Daigo tells the others to go ahead while he fights them off.
- Numelgon is now battling Mega Gyarados and hits it dead on with a Dragon Pulse while Mega Lizardon also strikes with a Thunder Punch. However Gyarados strikes back with Hyper Beam which knocks out Numelgon. Satoshi finally sends Fiarrow into the battle, however it is also taken down with a Stone Edge very early on. Fiarrow really got screwed here, huh?
- At this point, Pachira steps forward with Mega Hellgar announcing that she has also decided to turn against Fleur-de-lis, who really couldn't care. FYI, Mega Hellgar doesn't do a thing! It literally just stands there the whole time.
- As Serena and company run through the darkened corridors of the lab, they encounter Correa and her Dorapion which attacks. A Sludge Bomb hits the 'reporters', who then drop the disguises to reveal themselves as Team Rocket. To Serena's surprise, they tell her and Platene to keep going while they fight off Correa. This is a pretty awesome moment, and I'm glad the gang know Team Rocket are helping them (although they claim to be doing it in the name of Sakaki with all the usual posturing). Pumpjin and Maaiika are sent out and battle Dorapion while Serena, Manon and Platene press on. They eventually find Hari-san, still asleep. Platene promises that they'll find out what's wrong and will eventually heal it.
- On top of Prism Tower, Fleur-de-lis asks Satoshi if he really expects to win. Satoshi explains that they will win due to the bonds everyone has with their Pokemon (we see scenes of everyone battling).
- Bursyamo Mask gets Eureka in front of Puni-chan, however it doesn't recognise her. Instead, it tries to kill her by crushing her with the vines, only to Bursyamo Mask to take the hit and get slammed into a building. Eureka, devastated that Puni-chan doesn't know who she is, begins to cry and starts singing Puni-chan's song as she waits for it to finish her. However Puni-chan instead stops, recognising the song. Eureka realises the song is getting through to it and starts singing it in full. Puni-chan is clearly fighting with itself at this point, raising the vines to strike and powering up a Dragon Pulse but Eureka doesn't let up and continues the song while still crying in fear (I know people were despairing at the thought that the song would bring Puni-chan round, but the way it's portrayed with Eureka crying all the way through makes it a pretty nice moment actually). During this, Bursyamo steps forward to defend Eureka... and so does Dedenne! Sweet. Eventually, Puni-chan is brought around and nuzzles at Eureka in 50% Forme for a few seconds before releasing all the other cells and core and transforming back into its familiar Core Forme, fainted. Eureka picks it up and hugs it.
- In Miare Gym, Citron defeats Crobat and Calamanero. Xerosicy attempts to get Citron himself, but the Citroid opens a trapdoor and he falls through. Quite funny actually.
- Citroid has found the gun's self-destruct mechanism, which would not only destroy it but also release Z2 from Team Flare's control. But there's a catch... Citroid needs to remain interfacing with the system for this to work, but the feedback from the self-destruct would destroy it. Citron is obviously horrified, but Citroid tells him it's The Only Way. Citron has to be the only to actually hit the self-destruct, and hesitates for several seconds (flashing back to when he got control of the Citroid back at the beginning of the series). After the Citroid urges him, Citron screams then presses the button. The gun begins to blow up, and the backlash not only fries the Citroid but parts of it blow up as well. This is actually pretty graphic.
- Z2 is released from Team Flare's control and reverts back to Core Forme (we all get a shot of the Citroid's remains!). Satoshi, Alan and Pachira see this and tell Fleur-de-lis that it's all over and that he and his plans are finished however Fleur-de-lis tells them its not over for him yet. With that, the episode concludes.

So yeah, another top-notch entry in the Team Flare arc. Alas, poor Citroid, we barely knew ye.

Well, that was pretty good. Shiny Mega Gyarados is ridiculous OP though. Matter of fact, it was just about strong enough to defeat Lizardon so that's enough proof.

Props for this to be the first episode featuring all of the cast's Pokemon up to this point.

"F*ck every Ash pokemon that isn't Greninja" Every XYZ writer ever

It was hilarious seeing Noivern go like that. The whole scene was so funny with Hawlucha going to help him but Noivern is all YOLO...

Aside from that and Steven stealing the spotlight, it was a another good episode of the TF arc. I'm so happy that Malva opposed Lysandre.

The Bonnie scene had me go emotional. I hope yall sang the Puni song as well.
Clemont too had a pretty tough time. This was really the siblings at their best.

Poor Ash's other Pokémon. I think the writer's decision to keep singling one out as the "important" one is a serious flaw in the series.
I won't be surprised if Pikachu goes down next time so Greninja and Charizard can do everything.

Is Gyarados being powered up somehow or is it just Champion level naturally?

This was actually a very emotional episode. Clemont and Bonnie completely stole the spotlight with their scenes here. Bonnie breaking through to Squishy was a well deserved role for Bonnie and it really had some deep emotion. Clembot's death at the end was also very heavy and seeing Clemont break down like that was pretty sad. Clemont and Bonnie got their big moments though so great! Meanwhile, Steven Stone saving the day was pretty cool and watching Serena battle through the labs was great. I did not like how overpowered Mega Gyarados was though and how it wiped out most of Ash's team. Sure it is meant to be the villain, but I'm just so done with overpowered Megas. Seeing Mega Charizard X still standing as well doesn't please me either. It was cool though to see Malva stand up and defy Lysandre, so now she's on our side. Overall, it was a pretty good episode.

This was the fourth episode where AZ's theme played. The first three were XY060, XY087, and XY120.

I felt like the first two episodes of this arc were just setup, so it's nice to see that everyone is making progress. I'm not a fan of Bonnie singing Puni-chan's song to recover Z1 though. The chliché has been overdone; it didn't do anything for me when the Pokémon cried to bring Ash back from being a stone, and it didn't do anything for me now. Aside from that, I was amused how Sawyer appeared for less than a second. I enjoyed the episode regardless though, I can't wait to see how it ends next week!

Also, was this the longest Team Rocket stayed in one disguise? They acted like a TV crew for 10 episodes.

The god-awful animation honestly made this episode close to unwatchable. The battle vs Lysandre on top of the Prism tower is among the worst I've seen, and is seriously reminding me of Groudon vs Kyogre back in Hoenn. It's that bad.

These are episodes that need good animation to be enjoyable and they're not getting it.

Points for Eureka's and Citron's VA who made the otherwise cheesy scenes into something genuinely emotional. You can really feel that they put their heart into it.
Did not expect that Malva would turn on Lysandre. I'm actually a bit disappointed in that. Was hoping for at least a 2-on-2 to make the battle genuinely tense. Even with all of Satoshi's defeated Pokemon, I still don't feel like Satoshi's side is at more of a disadvantage, especially now that Malva joined them.

The episode is great and emotional. It's sad to see Bonnie cry (she rarely cries) after Blaziken mask get sent flying into a wall as she starts singing the Puni-chan song. Bonnie stutters on her words at first, but as Puni-chan looks at her and starts getting back to normal, Bonnie sings clearer and louder as she continues crying. It's cute when Puni-chan as Zygarde 50% nuzzled Bonnie when he's no long being mind controlled by Team Flare. It 's sad to watch Clembot die, but he has to destroy the machine so Z2 can stop destroying Lumiose city, even it mean that he has to sacrifice himself. I wished that we see more of Clemont's and Xerosic's battle instead of seeing little bits of it, but it's funny to watch Xerosic being sent down down a trap door. After Z2 gets freed from Team Flare's control and the vines stopped, the restaurant shouldn't be looking neat, it should look like a mess from the panic from earlier. I wonder how Z2 would react when he reunites with Puni-chan for real this time and sees Bonnie for the first time.

Don't you think Lysandre's Gyarados is just too OP? It defeated all of Ash's four Pokemon. I wasn't pleased for Bonnie to sing this annoying Squishy song to snap Squishy out of this mind-controlling, but it did work in the end.

Anything that makes Mega Charizard X look weak in comparison is good in my books. Really, Lysandre essentially reestablishes the natural pecking order and prevents Alain from stealing Ash's spotlight with his OP Mega Charizard X.

R.I.P. Clembot. You will be resurrected.

Poor Ash's Pokemon, getting wrecked like that.
Never expected Bonnie to sing Puni Chan song to calm it down. Kinda makes me wonder how the dub will pull this off.

Hope in the next episode Ash or Steven remember each other.

I doubt it. The writers seem quite set on retconning his AG Granite Cave episode out of existence, this is the second time that Jessie's inexplicably fangirled over Steven now.

Wasn't sure they could maintain the pace/tension/emotion but the arc is amazing so far! Best bits were:
- Music & lack thereof in key moments
- Everyone involved, genuinely, in useful ways
- Voice acting was stellar
- NGL I was one of the people whining about the potential of Eureka singing that damn song but the scene was SO well done that I actually had tears in my eyes!
- Musashi's crush was not forgotten & the little moment when Nyasu told her to shut up :p

Would have preferred:
- Better animation. This episode was standout bad (probs because all other elements were outstanding).
- Zysnake not to get turned by Puni-chan's Song, but Eureka and Papa saved only by Citron's intervention. (It would have felt so much more stark and desperate!)
- More focus on the Citron/Citroid/Xerosicy plot. Really wanted to see more of that battle.

Man.. this was such an emotional episode.. Bonnie and Clemont were the best they've ever been in this one. I really don't want these characters to go after this series ends, but it has to be that way... I haven't been this emotional for any other ep than this one.

I understand if people don't like Bonnie's singing to snap Squishy back to normal, but tbh, I don't see anything else that can snap it back to normal if everyone else were busy, leaving Bonnie and her dad, and I doubt her dad can take on Squishy alone.

This shows Bonnie cares so much about Puni-chan more than anyone else. During the ep when Team Flare captured Z-2, Whenever Puni-Chan was concerned for Z-2, Bonnie was able to calm it down and made it sleep by singing the Puni-Chan song. She often played with it on certain occasions. The ending song just made it established that strong connection between Bonnie and Squishy, which I haven't seen with other legendaries that last that long.

She risked her life for trying to snap it back, and the part where it nuzzled Bonnie was really touching..

The part that Clembot got destroyed was really a tearjerker for me. It truly acted more than a robot for Clemont, and can't bear to watch that part again once English subs come out.

At least next week's preview of the 1 hour special in TV Tokyo is back to more likes than dislikes now... I was wondering how many will still continue to be salty over the league...
