A new pair of core series games has been revealed in the Pokémon Presents livestream broadcast on February 27th by The Pokémon Company. Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet will be released on the Nintendo Switch late this year. Developed by GAME FREAK inc., Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet take a new evolutionary step in the Pokémon main series. These games will be in an open-world adventure similar to Pokémon Legends: Arceus. Whereas in that game each area was it's own separate and distinct map however, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet are promised to be a true open-world experience, where players can explore an entire region where "towns with no borders blend seamlessly into the wilderness. Pokémon can be seen everywhere in this wide-open world—in the skies, in the sea, and on the streets."

Tsunekazu Ishihara—president and CEO of The Pokémon Company said:
Trainers will once again embark on an epic journey of discovery and exploration. Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet will be an adventure unlike any other, and I cannot wait to share this incredible experience with all of you.

In an interesting change from past titles, the main character's outfit will be differently coloured depending on which of the two games is being played. One thing that hasn't changed however is that players will have a choice between a Grass-type, Fire-type, and Water-type to partner with them as they start their Pokémon journey. This time around, players will be able to choose from Sprigatito, the Grass Cat Pokémon, Fuecoco, the Fire Croc Pokémon, and Quaxly, the Duckling Pokémon.

After the launch of Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet, players will be able to link with Pokémon HOME, a service that allows Trainers to keep their entire Pokémon collection in one place. By linking these games with Pokémon HOME, Trainers will be able to have Pokémon from other regions adventure alongside them in Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet. However, only Pokémon that can be obtained in that particular game can be transferred.
