I'm a bit clueless as to what these do exactly, so if someone could give an explanation on the questions below, it'd be nice.

And don't reccomend going to Smogon, all I got were a bunch of internal server errors.

EV
Now I know these directly affect a Pokemon's stats, but how do they affect me, describe their characteristics, and explain how EV training works exactly. (How to EV train Pokemons?)

IV
Now this one is more of a mystery to me. I'm not really sure how these work at all, so someone do explain how they are calculated, and how they affect me/how are they important?

Re: A Newfag's Guide to EV/IV

EV = Effort Values = Go here for Bulbapedia Article on EVs
IV = Individual Values = Go here for Bulbapedia Article on IVs

---

Every Pokémon which is caught, hatched or hacked will have IV's in HP, Attack, Defence, Sp. Attack, Sp. Defence and Speed.

The IV's range between 1 and 31, and affect (at least, I think, don't rage if I'm wrong) how the Pokémon's stats grow as it levels up. For example:

A Pikachu with an IV of 28 in Attack will grow to have much stronger attack than a Pikachu with an IV of 14 in Attack.

IV's are hidden, and can only be viewed by going into the games coding and looking at a specific Pokémon you have caught.

---

Every Pokémon gives out certain EV's when it's defeated, and a Pokémon will gain this EV's if it levels up after defeating that Pokémon. For example, a Charizard will give out an EV of 3 in the Sp. Attack stat.

So, if you have your Pokémon a Rare Candy to level it up, it's stats might go up like this:

HP: +3
Attack: +1
Defence: +2
Sp. Attack: +1
Sp. Defence: +1
Speed: +1

However, if you defeat a Charizard and the level up, their stats will go like this:

HP: +3
Attack: +1
Defence: +2
Sp. Attack: +4
Sp. Defence: +1
Speed: +1

For a list of Pokémon by the Effort Yield/EV they give out when defeated, click here.

Helpful, thanks.
How does one determine his Pokemon's IVs?

They are completely randomised (and hidden), so you usually need something like a PokéSav to view the IV's of your Pokémon.

Although, in HeartGold and SoulSilver, certain items listed here will pass down the IV in a certain stat from a parent Pokémon to it's egg/child Pokémon.

Close, but not quite correct. 1. IVs can range from 0 to 31, not 1 to 31. And they will affect your Pokemon's stats at level 100. A Pikachu with a 31 Attack IV would have 31 more points in that stat than a Pikachu with 0 IVs in that point.

As for EVs, you can have a total of 510, and every 4 EVs gives you 1 point in a stat. Killing a Charizard for 3 Sp. Attack EVs won't give you three points in that stat. It takes 4 EVs for one point. Also, EVs spread over levels, you won't get every point from EVs after one level up.

How does one determine his Pokemon's IVs?

I usually start by checking my Pokémon's Characteristic - that gives an idea of what one of the IVs is (check out the Bukbapedia article). Then, if you talk to the man in Platinum's Battle Tower standing in the top right, he can give further information; he'll tell you a broad overview of the IVs (from outstanding potential (good) to decent all round (bad)) then tell you which stat the best IV is in, and some idea of what it is. (Can't be better means it's 31). If several stats tie for top IV, keep talking to him and he'll eventually mention them.

For more detailed results, I use metalkid's IV calculator; enter in your Pokéon's stats and you can get an idea of the IVs (provided you haven't done any EV training). Using a few rare candies (without saving) you can generally get a good enough idea of the IVs.

Finally, if you go into an automativ level 100 wifi battle and write the stats down you can put them into an IV calculator to get the exact IVs back (provided you know the EVs).

Can anyone tell me what a 'Newfag' is??

Basically it's making fun of someone new to something. Calling them a newbie and a fag/faggot at the same time, mostly because they don't know much or anything about a certain thing/topic, they are new, etc.

Aha, I figured it was something juvenile like that. Thanks.

I'd have thought n00b or something similar would be sufficient? Introducing a hateful slur into the word accomplishes nothing, except offending most normal people.

Other uses for the word aside (british slang, sticks and twigs), the usage here is clearly offensive and I think a mod should probably change it to something a little more appropriate.

People love being offended, don't they? I'm calling nobody here a newfag but myself.

My thanks to those of you who made an on-topic comment.

No, you don't get to do that. You don't get to make offensive comments and then say that it's other people's fault for being offended. Consider this an official warning. Do it again and you get an infraction.

Do whatever you want, but will we stay on topic for Christ's sake?
