Review AG149: Battle Arena! Fighting Showdown!!

They've changed this:

But not the silhouette of Kogomi.

Speaking of Kogomi, as expected, the special rules of the Battle Arena are not used.

Also, Kabigon's glowing is from Protect.

So is that Snorlax's Pokéball?

No. As they leave, Ash thinks about what Scott said about Greta having Medicham and Hariyama, and goes back into the Pokemon Center alone. We don't see it, but that's when he calls Oak to get Snorlax.

Hmm. So it is a double battle. Grovyle and Snorlax vs. Hariyama and Medicham.

LOL! In case you hadn't figured out that this is Brawly and Chuck combined into the latest advertising, the writers spell it out for us:

So what is this thing for?

I'd like to buy a vowel. *shot*

It's to determine how many Pokemon they used in battle.

Visually, yes it was a double battle, but functionally, it was a single battle. Four Pokemon were on the field, but at first only Grovyle and Hariyama battled. When Grovyle was defeated, Snorlax took on Hariyama. Hariyama went down, then Snorlax battled Medicham. I'm not sure if that was the intention or not, but that's what happened.

Is there a reason the writers refuse to follow the rules of the Frontier Brains?

Why make them into regular matches?

The Battle Arena rules would have been very interesting to watch in anime. But it makes battles too short. To fill an episode they'd probably need filler (like with Datsura) or more battles (which can become boring).

Well to fill an episode use more Pokemon. Why do all the battles have to be just 2 on 2 or 3 on 3?

They should have 5 on 5 matches, similar to the Juan match.

It was not a double battle in any way. It was a standard 2-on-2 consecutive, the only unusual thing being that all pokemon were revealed before the match started.

It was good to see proof in this episode that the anime writers are still not holding themselves to the 4-attack rule. Snorlax was seen using Protect, Ice Punch, Hyper Beam, Headbutt, Rest, and Body Slam.
