I think a return to Kalos is incredibly unlikely, however Eternal Floette which is tied so strongly to AZ and Kalos was deliberately kept in the games coding whereas Cosplay Pikachu was removed.

After the demo was mined and we found catching and releasing animations for Pokemon in Apricorn balls some said this meant nothing whereas some said the lack of Dream Ball and Sport Ball pointed to something and in the end Apricorn balls were in the final game.

because it's pretty much incompatible with the series without either a) sweeping changes or b) an acceptance that the product would be subpar with it included
Well, if you're implying the second region has to be gimped in order to exist, that might be true or it might not. We've only seen this world on the GBC for the first time and then remade for the DS. They might have had hardware limitations or they might have simply never planned for bigger regions back in the day, or both.

Nowadays, every region has expanded to have 14-16 cities/towns and be more elaborate than Kanto/Johto. Alola is the first region to feature only 8 cities (like..only 4-5 of them even resemble actual cities). Instead, Alola has a bunch of wilderness which really doesn't mean all that much. It feels small and all, smaller than Hoenn ever was. With that in mind, it is semi logical to presume a small region could fit a second one if they really wanted to do that. And if the second region has to be gimped, then I suppose Kanto, as something gimped by default, would actually make sense(so would Johto). But again, if Pokemon is moving to the Switch, it might no longer be necessary to gimp regions in order to have them included together, so it's mere speculation at this point.

In regards to recent anime news that Misty and Brock will be featured in Alola for 2 episodes, people are going crazy that it means something for USUM, but it IS the anime's 20th anniversary like last year was the games' 20th anniversary, so it's only natural the anime is going to pander to Kanto nostalgia like SM did too. It really doesn't have to mean anything more than Origins did for XY.
