Art Gallery General Chat Thread

synesthesia can be any sense / set of ideas linked with any sense. me? sounds have shapes, letters and numbers have colors and numbers 0-9 have personalities. and they stay the same your whole life, unless you specifically try to change them.

synesthesia's weird. a lot of synesthetes don't even know they have it, because they just assume everyone else has the same, or they tell someone who then say's they're probably just imagining things and then they think so too.

a poll in a popular newspaper's site once asked its readers if they saw letters in colors. my sister was like, "yeah, maybe if you're on drugs" and then i told her i actually had that. my dad has synesthesia too.

Currently working on a paint drawing related to my favourite TV show at the moment, hoping to finish it soon. Also been playing some old games lately, dug out the megadrive and been playing through Sonic 3 & Knuckles, starting to get a little bit better at it now after many years, I can more or less get through the first 5 zones without cheating now :D Still find it the hardest Classic Sonic game though.

Does anyone else have any games that it seems to take ages to improve at?

Almost every game haha, I really suck at gaming ^^; Mostly games that involve driving a car though, I can't play Mario Kart for life for example.

Meanwile I've worked as a parking attendant at the zoo yesterday, I don't think I've ever walked this much in my life D: Most of it was running around to try and find free parking spaces and leading cars there and the parking lot is of course huge so pfff. I was selling ice cream in the afternoon though and a couple of visitors was so confused that I was helping them park this morning and was now selling them ice cream haha. Should've said it was my twin sister :p

Sounds like you had a really busy day at the Zoo, yeah it would have confused theme more if you said you had a twin sister :D

I'm not too bad at driving games myself, I'm ok at Mario Kart. I'm terrible at shooting games though, in first person shooters I panic whenever someone or something fires at me and I hit everything except the target I'm shooting at when trying to fire back :D

This though, I hate it when people shoot at me in games haha. I don't even try to target, I just shoot around me and hope I kill all the enemies. Sadly that tactic mostly fails and I just give up :p Somehow I'm just better with swords, like I hardly have any problems with the Assassin Creed games, it's guns that cause problems somehow.

I'm okay at the few shooter games I've played, but if it's on the Wii, I can't hold still for the life of me.

The first thing that comes to mind as far as needing to improve goes is Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2's online mode. I'm absolute garbage at that. :p

Hey y'all, as you may have noticed, the Bulbagarden forum rules have been overhauled, and with that we made some slight changes to the Art Gallery Rules and the Art Shops Rules too.

Not much has changed for this section's rules really, they mostly have a shiny new format and are shortened so they're easier to read. The biggest change is that there's no limit to double posting anymore; as long as the new post contains new content (this includes updates about your art thread or shop), double posting is allowed, so you don't have to wait 24 hours anymore :)

If you got any questions about the rules, feel free to ask them here or in the rules threads themselves!

so what do these new rules mean for gory art? is it still fine when tagged and in spoilers?

Good question, I see that's indeed worded wrongy, shall fix that.

Gore is still allowed, as long as it's under spoiler tags and it's clearly stated that gore can be found inside :) The only thing not allowed is porn/hentai, just as with the old rules.

Imma just pop in randomly and ask you lot. What do you guys use as a reference for drawing hair?

Hey y'all, just so you know: we're having a site-wide staff drive and are looking for Staff Artists and Art Gallery moderators! Read more about it here.

Sorry to interupt your question, Dolce, please all still answer that! :D I sadly don't really have an answer myself, I mostly draw fanart so I can just use the actual character itself as reference :p

well, first of all photos, but i've also bumped into some pretty great tutorials over the years. here's a few:
1
2
3
4
5 (i think this is the best one, in terms of coloring at least)
and then of course the proko tutorial, because proko is bae.

but the general advice is to think of hair as big clumps and then strands, instead of thinking of it as thousands of strands right off the bat. just like with everything, basics first and details afterwards.

and while normally i'd always suggest against using other people's art as reference, it can be useful to pay attention to how they stylize/simplify hair. you might learn a trick or two.

Since I've been sketching lately I've found that my challenge is letting myself loosen up when I draw. So whenever I've tried to draw hair it's been really stiff and unappealing (to me anyways). I want to be able to draw curls, and the like more proficiently.

Proko really is bae though. :p

If I'm working from official artwork or whatever, then I try to base the hair on that. However, whenever I draw my own characters, I just kinda use my imagination.
