Continuing the run of past generation starters making their Paldea debut in special Tera Raids, the Ninja Pokémon Greninja will be making its first appearance in 7-star Black Crystal Tera Raid Battles later this month, between January 27th at 00:00 (UTC), and January 29th at 23:59 (UTC), with a follow-up appearance in mid-February from February 10th at 00:00 (UTC), to February 12th at 23:59 (UTC).

This event's Greninja has the Poison Tera Type, and will have the same mark, Ability, and moves when caught by trainers regardless of when it is caught during the event. This Greninja can only be caught once per save data, and players who catch it during the initial run in January will not be able to catch it again during the second run in February. Greninja cannot normally be encountered in Paldea, but may appear again in other events or be encounterable in different ways in the future.

Black Crystal Tera Raid Battles contain much stronger Pokémon than those appearing in ordinary Tera Raid Battles, and give out better rewards. To encounter Greninja in Black Crystal Tera Raid Battles, players will need to download the latest Poké Portal News. If players have connected their Nintendo Switch system to the internet while playing Pokémon Scarlet or Violet, this will happen automatically. Players can also manually download the Poké Portal News by selecting Poké Portal from the X menu, and then selecting Mystery Gift, and then Check Poké Portal News. After that, players who have completed certain postgame events will be able to start the Black Crystal Tera Raid Battle simply by walking up to and interacting with the Black Tera Crystal in-game. In the overworld, the Black Tera Crystals associated with these raids can be differentiated from other Tera Raid crystals by their aura and black sheen. Both are also clearly visible when looking at crystals on the map. Players who haven't yet completed the required postgame events can still participate in these Black Tera Raid Battles, but only by joining with other Trainers in multiplayer, such as by using a Link Code. A paid Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to participate in Tera Raid Battles with other Trainers online.

As much as I like Greninja, I am not interested. Like, why bother when it might just end up in the box for all eternity? Plus, I haven't really played Scarlet since I cleared the story and saw the credits.

Since you only get access to 7-star raid battles after you complete the "post-post-story" part of the game and do a few five/six-star raids (something like that), I'd imagine that a person doing these objectives would probably be anticipating the 7-star raids.
Plus, so far, it seems that the 7-star raids are going to be exclusively for pokemon unobtainable by normal means in the game unless you transfer from HOME (which is currently unavailable), so I'd imagine plenty of people would be excited to pick these Pokemon up (I am personally VERY excited for the Greninja raid as it is my favorite pokemon :))
