As we all know, Riolu only evolves with high friendship during the DAY. However, in the darkest day arc, Riolu evolved in nighttime, as the sky was dark (although it can be the clouds that covered the sky so it looked dark). So based on that information, we can see that Ash's Riolu broke the game mechanic(?). What do you guys think?

Misty's Poliwhirl evolved not through a proper trade, but instead a transfer through different Pokécenters.
Ash's Sliggo evolved through the rain that it created using Rain Dance, which wouldn't work in the games to trigger its evolution.

The animé has broken the proper patterns of evolutions many times in the past as they felt like. So whatever goes for the story-telling, the writers will bend the rules to their likings and fit the story to what they want to achieve. So it is nothing new.

While you have a point, episodes later they evolve Scyther with a Metal Coat via trade. Why not bend that as well then.

It was dark, yes. But only because of Eternatus's power.

You can see from the picture itself that it's not night as there is still light outside.

It was actually at nighttime, as there were stars when the clouds cleared up. It also boggles my mind as to why writers let that happen.

Watching the episode again, clouds appeared during daytime and disappeared during nighttime. There is no way to say that whether it was day or night during the evolution.
